This was the class of fifty seven. We entered the building as some one testing the solidity of a. bridge, however upon meeting the principal, teachers, and upper classmen, we were soon m ade to feel safe and sure that we, too, were a part of that wonderful family. 'Our first task was to familiarize ourselves with our new sur- roundings and to adjust to schedules and rules. Having done this we plunged whole heartedly into all phases of Curricular and extra Curricular Activities. Our Class was represented in the Glee Club, on the Football Team, Basketball Team, in the Red Cross, Band, and Student Council. A number of us made the honor roll the first sixgweeks. One of the highlights of our fr e s hm an year was the crowning of a freshman May Queen. Our first ye ar was truly an ewdciting and successful one. V 1 ' After completing successfully our freshmen ye ar we moved further inland, took up heavier responsibilities and took our places. as sophomores. Alon g with adjusting to our new status we were to be a part of another vast change. We entered a new Senior High School which we thought was the very best. Among our new objecfr tives was keeping our school neat, clean and attractive. On find'- ing that our work had become more complicated than the year be- fore we buckled down with greater efforts so that we could contiiiile doing well in our studies and activities. if The day finally came when we were classified as Juniorsll ln contrast to the years before our participation in activities greatly increased. We were represented in all phases of activities, iStu- dent Council, National Honor Society, Football T e am , Basketball i'T'?3.lI!i',: Band, Glee Club, Dramatic Club and the Charm Club. 5 ,lunior year found us preparing for what we ,event of our lives, the Junioifand i,., f'W'e',w'e'r'sef1-iot.1qn'lyj.',,,entertaining the seniors but we were our selves. f l A I. .2 fi ,'s,i 5 p s infsi Ej+fi?isti.s'allMgsashefkl . The Bulls started slowly, but steadily improved as the season grew Older. After the Bulls started rolling they set s om ewhat ofa. record by scoring 96 points in two games. As far as the r ec ords show the highest for two games was 84 points. Another factor against the Bulls was that theylacked the use of a home field, because the Bull's field was incomplete during the 1956 season. So all the games were played on a foreign field. The Bull's forward wall was lead by Richard Sheridan, Charlie Fowler, McKenall and John McPherson. The Backfield was lead by All-Shrine Bowl Half-back, Odell Gilrnoreg also running in the backfield fo r t h e Bulls and carrying some of the load were lettermen, Benjamin Cole, and William Thigpen. BASKETBALL 1956- 57 The Bulls finished the 1956-57 season with 13 wins and 6 losses. Our victories were over some of the best teams in the State. Among the Seniors on the Varsity were Richard Sheridan, Benjamin Cole, Leonard Jones. Leonard .Tones was the high-scorer among the Sen- iors, collecting 23O points, followed by Richard Sheridan with 104 points, and Benjamin Cole with 72. The Bulls c olle c ted 1,204 points for 19 games against only 959 for their opponents. The Bulls are looking forward to an even better season next year. The Baby Bulls, coached by Mr. D.T. Carter had a record of 16 and Z., for the 56-57 season. The Big Bulls were coached by Mr. D.S. Kelly. BASEBALL 1957 The arrival of the Bas eball season finds the Bulls being led by five lettermen. Outfielders, Clinton McGeachy, Charlie Fowler, Carl Bullock, third-baseman, Benjamin Cole and pitcher, Richard Sheridan. Clinton Mc- Geachy .425, Ben Cole .375, and Charlie Fowler .250, were top batters for the Bulls. Top pitcher was Richard Sheridan with a high school record of 7 wins and 3 losses, and 85 strike outs. A 'X 5 A - - AS - va H ' I 6111.95 Praphccy Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is your announcer, Eddie Hughe s. We are broadcasting from the Miller Opera Hall in Fayetteville, North C arolina. The year is 1977 and Maestro Barbara Massey, the first woman conductor, is going to conduct the Overture to the Opera, La Smithsonian. T his is a particularly special program because the pianist , Marian Simmons, the star violinist, Evangeline Suttongthe bass fiddler, Leroy Butlerg and the soloist, Geraldine Tyndall were once high school classmates. The hall itself was designed by the renovnmed architect,Jarnes Benton, and the spacious interior by Ardis Newton, the celebrated designer and decorator of many homes on the east coast. Someone inquired about the murals decorating the walls of the hall. We are told that the art team headed by Miss Barbara Tate is responsible. As we enter the m ain auditorium, our attention turns imme- diately to the exquisite grooming of the ladies and gentlemen ser- ving as ushers. The costumes we r e tailored by the noted tailor, Vonne Hair and the fine coiffeurs ar e accredited to the Howard- Davis beauty salon operated by Ge or gia Full e r and Katherine Thompson. The orchestra is tuning up now, but let us turn the spotlight on the celebrities here tonight. Up in the one hundred-dollar seats is Miss Patricia Hargrove, a r e s earc h sociologist in New York City escorted by the robust pitcher for the Yankees, Mr. Richard Sheridan. In the next box are four of Miss Hargrove's colleagues, Misses Juanita Royall, Stella Lockhart, Gwendolyn Randall and Emma Jean McMillian. Here comes the distinguished su r g e on, Ralph Stephens with his head nurse, Miss Inez McEachern. I might say at this point that the McEtienne Hospital of which Dr. Stephens is head surgeon has on its competent staff the following persons: osteopathic phy- sician, Calvin McDonaldg chief laboratory technician, Shirley Com- bestg occupational therapists, Jocelyn Geralds and Margaret Wal4 kerg registered nurses, Magdelene Elliott, Angela Ingram, Esther Burton, Lois Lee, and Dessa Morrisong pediatrical nurses, Bar- bara Currie and Gloria MCNeilg and hospital nutritionists, Yvonne McMillian and Mattie Baker, In the balcony we see the Tum blin g Champ Gymnast Team: B enj amin C ol e , Clinton McGeachy, Josephine Brown, Leonard Jones, Tony McMillian, and Joe Ann Fuller. We are informed that this te am wa s formed in high school from a common interest in physical education. Coming in now, ladies and gentlemen,is that celebrated Wall Street Hound, Edward Galbreath. With him is his private secre- tary. We understand that Misses Mary Monroe, Nancy Smith, and Yvonne Hair have secured stenographic positions in the same build- ing as Miss Murchison. 6flISS Praphecy We believe--yes, in the left wing is Mr. George McNeil, that reputed aeronautical engineer. We miss his colleagues, Mr. John Mc Pher s on and Mr. Carl Bullock. We do see Mr. McKensdale Pompey, noted electrical engineer, though. Making it a foursome tonight we see Misses Cecelia Donnell, Alma Hooks, Ethel Gaddie, and Grace Ivory, s e ated in the right wing. They are all elementary sc hool teachers in Philadelphia. In the secondary s chool system are two other classmates, Miss Edna MacRae, instructor of Mathematics and Home Economics in- structor, Miss Dorothy Usher. We can imagine that by now you are wondering why the pres- ence of so many persons is being acknowledged. We inform you that tonight marks the twenti et h annual reunion of the Class of 1957 from the E.E. Smith Senior High School. Much to our regret, some of our classmates are not with us tonight. We have learned that Dr. Elijah McMi1lian is attending a session of the National Dentist Association's annual convention in Chicago. Miss Bertha Townsend is also there attending a beauti- cian's meeting. Serving in official capacities at various military posts around the country are Adam Spears,Richard Smith, Mayso Monroe, Aut- hur Peterson, Judge Kemp, Timothy Brewington, Earl McNeil, and Jimmy Blue. We have received wires for this occasion from classmates Ida Hennigan, Irene McKinnon, Shirley McNeil, Arnetha Pridgen, Mary Bowden, Corina Williams, and Elizabeth Fuller who are traveling abroad and tonight are having somewhat of a reunion of their own since they could not be here with us. Yes, the telegrams are constantly pouring in. We hope there is time to acknowledge all of them. From Detroit comes this one from Odell Gilmore and Sarah Oliver. Mr. Gilmore plays with the Detroit Tigers. Miss Oliver is superintendent ofnurses at Detroit General Hospital. Here's a cablegram. It is from Charlie Fowler, Thurl Isley, Louise Young and Alma McCoy. The two young ladies accompanied the gentlemen on a business trip to South Africa for the National Petrol Refining Company. This wire is from Mr, Francis Rose. After serving for sev- eral years in the Armed Forces, he is conducting a school of bar- bering. And now, ladies and gentlemen, the houselights are dimming, the conductor is taking the podium. This is truly a night to re- member. We hope you will enjoy the opera, La Smithsonian. REFRESHMENT STAND A HAPPY PLACE FOR HAPPY PEOPLE EBONY BILLIARDS SLOGAN WE STRIVE TO PLEASE Mgr.
