Once or twice this side of death, Something happens to make one lose his breath. Ah, distinctly I remember, That crystal moment in September. September 4, 1952, to be exact, was the crystal moment we pierced our shells and realized the world of E. E. SMITH. Not long after this moment, we had brushed the stardust from our eyes and made ourselves at home. Homecoming 1952, our day: we were represented in the Queen's court, Luther McKeithan aided in the teams victory, numerous freshmen helped the band serenade her majesty, Gloria Haithman and Geraldine Williams were on the cheering squad and the rest of us drilled on the field. Our crowning achievement was our Ugly Duckling fl oat designed by Kenneth Walker, depicting our one day rising from our duckling position to that of the senior or the swan, as the story goes. ' Quite a few fr e s hm en made the Glee Club that year. Shortly, however basketball season, May Day and the State Days were history dramatically closed by our excursion to Chapel Hill and Raleigh. Eons later factually three monthsj, we had mig r at ed back to the lake, What a splash we made. Twenty-six ot' us made the Band and more the Glee Club. Lula Saunders won her boots and baton, Naydne Wilds made the cheering squad and four more seniors won their football letters. Again, we were represented in the Homecoming Queen's courtg James Dudley went to Raleigha Finalist in the World Peace speaking contest and Per-trune,Horse, John Thomas and Ken paced the J.V. ln l954, our school took a big step forward and right to the fore was the class of '56. With our new school came new faces, Luther Geralds and Jesse Usher, They joined the grid knights on what was al r e ady a strong team. Football wa s no exception, for we dominated almost all other activities, too. Maureen Hall was attendant to Miss Homecoming, Lois and Elaine made the cheering squad, and twenty of us were listed as charter members in our chapter of the National Honor Society. Horace was our chapter's first president,Ja.unita its first corresponding secre- tary. Gloria and Ken helped write the inducting ceremony and Ken drafted the chapter constitu- tion. The invigorating spring found us in a maze of activities. We toured the nations Capital, historic and scenic Vir ginia and presented the most dazzling of Proms, an April in Paris affair. The last ye a r was all it had promised to be, and more. We enjoyed the worship of the underclassmenj our senior privileges and all our experiences, The thought of no more migra- tions and no more of this era was apalling. However, our last song was a doleful one. Georgia Tilly, our queen, Alma Murphy, and Doris Williams enhanced the Homecoming festivities. Roy Lucas won the local N.C.S.I.O. essay contest. Nicky Geralds was named all-state tackle. Senior Day at Greensboro, College Day, Career Day, The Pr om , Baccalaureate and Com- mencement ushered us into the door-way of tomorrow with opportunity patiently tapping, We, the members of the class of 1956 of E. Gloria Haithman Executrix BEYOND THE HORIZON... As I stood at the window peering, into the beautiful night, twilight pulled down h e r curtains and pinned them with a star. Each sunset now meant I was a day nearer my deadline for the class prophecyg yet my mind was blank. Later, as I settled myself in front of the T.V, to watch my favorite program, This is Your Life , thoughts of class pro- phecy drifted into oblivion. As the program proper began, Mr. Edwards was introducing the night's personality - - - Why that person on the screen is I, or at least she looks like me - - - She's older than I, I thought - - - Miss Adams'Q Mr. Edwards began, welcome to This is Your Life It is our pleasure to fetemanyfamous persons on our program, but we think this one the most unusual, We are going to let you see through the eyes of television cameras near and far, just how accurate your class prophecy in l956 was. HORNETS STING BULLS 20-6 In their first game away from home the Bulls felt the fu.ll effect of the stinging Hornets from Durham's, Hillside High School. The Hornets, ledby Vernon Skipper McLain, ran the herd rough-shod in the ending moments of the game, but the Bulls gav e a good account of themselves up against this powerful grid machine. Hillside's multiple offense was all they needed to rack-up their third win in a row over Smith. Smith's bright spots were the defense of Elliott, Evans, Geralds and Tyndall. The running of Bethune, McNeil, Cole and a Z0-yard pass play by Bethune to Walker were superb. 3 E nt of E.E.Smith High C, Fowler, a teacher was the principle ina Life program during rn of the national of This Is Your mez Easley, Teacher at hool, acted as mistress Program partici- selected from the stu- ty and community owler the many omplishments during a teacher. members partici- program wereformer s Fowler, Miss M. librarian, class of l. In fact it was one of the biggest record breakers of the year. Never before had the affair been so successful finan- ciallyp the weatherman was right on the jobg the attendants were prettier and the floats were more numerous despite the rigid tests they had to pass. And taking her place with the prides of our school was the beautiful and alluring Miss Georgia Tilly. No year yet has presented such a colossal Homecoming or such a colos sal queen.
