E. Smith High School. It didn't take us long to get acquainted with the upperclassmen and we found it easy to adjust ourselves to the new teaching personnel and to the various activities of high school life. During our first year at Smith High, some of our students from both sections made themselves distinguished by making the B Honor Roll. Some of our students did outstanding work in the Glee Club and Band, while others joined the Pat- rol Squad and other organizations. Our contestant from the 8B class, Elizabeth Gerald became May Queen. In our ninth year, We found scholastic work to be some- what more perplexing, especially Mathematics, but we buck- led down and reallydid some hard studying and concentrating. During the fall there were many activities in which we par- ticipated. Several of our students made the advanced Band and were able to march in the Homecoming Parade. Our con- testant from the 9A class, Dora McRae, was an attendant to Miss Homecoming. In the spring, our girls' team from the 9A class won the Basketball cup. In our sophomore year, our boys excelled in athletics, while some of the students did outstanding work in the Glee Club and Band. We foundAlgebra to be easier than we thought it to be. Our Contestantfrom the 10A class, Mary Young, was an attendant to the May Queen and again our girls' team won the Basketball Cup. Our eleventh year was an eventful year. It was a year jam- packed with activities and hard studying. Our United States History Class had a mock election be- tween Eisenhower and Stevenson. Howard Mitchell acted as Stevenson and Winfield Coachman acted as Eisenhower. This election gave the student body an idea what voting is like. During the spring we toured the nation's capital and the Shen- andoah Valley where we saw the Luray Caverns. All of us enjoyed visiting the interesting and historic places. Thelma Gainey was the World Peace Contest winner. 0112155 'listurg We entertained the Seniors at what was considered the best Junior-Senior Prom in the history of the school. Vonnette Stanley and Patricia Hall represented us well in the typing contest at North Carolina College in Durham, while in Raleigh, Robert Foster Melvin was one of the outstanding actors at the State Drama Festival at Shaw University. Dorothy Garner was an attendant to Miss Homecoming and Mary Young became May Queen. The Junior class officers were-g Mary Young, President, Christine Murchison, Vice President, Doris Boone, Secretary, Ellen Brooks, Assistant Secretary, and Evelyn Brooks, Treas- l11'eI'. Then finally came our Senior year. Assignments became more complicated, but we didn't let that hinder us because we were determined to reach our goal. Our class Won pro- minence in athletics with Milton McDonald, William McMi1lian, Willie Brewington, Aaron Melvin, Wilbert I-Iandon, Oscar Evans, James Edwards, and Richard Maddox's names forever seen in sports headlines, while in Music Christine Murchison' s melodious voice rang clear. Dora McRae became Miss Homecoming. Rodney Williams was President and LeGray Hines was Secretary and Treasurer. Finally came our preparations for our departure. Thus in departing, the class of 1954, will try to live up to its motto: Not Finished: Just Begun. Evelyn Brooks W Un the tune of Ole Man Riverb Zlass 50149 Dear old Smith High, We love you so, With our affections, and all our souls, We'1l always love you wherever we may go. From childhoods of September, 'till the time of June, I I We' 11 cherish your memories, Q 'till our strivings done The future's just begun, So we must go along. pq 2 .a-,7f'1,Jf4f ,id wx! , 2 X X fuflf ff' N Chorus Think of our principal Our teachers, too, They've been the ones that have guided us through, Oh, oh, Smith High, we hate to leave We hate very much to say good-bye. W J Our voices raise, in songs of praise, Your name shall stand for evermore, Our Dear Old Smith High, We'll always love you so! 2 We' ll carry the truths, Which in us were instilled, To places which long with ignorance has been filled. Dear classmates it breaks our hearts to part from you. Chorus . . . Song Composers: Henry Fairley Vonnette Stanley Christine Murchison M74 0112155 mem ,.,- .l I 41 We the seniors of E. E. Smith High Are just about to say goodbye It hurts us deep down in our hearts Knowing that soon from here we must part Although the years have swiftly passed Our memories of you will always last To us, you are the most unforgettable And not a moment here was regrettable. We're thinking of those who follow behind We don't want them to step out of line We hope we left something to lead you on, To use forever after We're gone. For the E. E. Smith High School Our love will ever unfold And our loves will be a symbol For our colors of Blue and Gold. Class Poet Mary Eliza McLaurin t is 4 'Z MAf flZfi1lifiB5 jj! It is June second, Nineteen Hun- dred and Fifty-Four and we have been practicing very hard on our class song, so I decided to sit and rest awhile. While resting I begin nodding and then to dream. My dream takes me twenty years in the future, Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-Four. The scene is in --Ah-- it is in St. John's Home for Nurses and there I see Christine Murchison as supervisor. With her are her assistants Mary Moore and George McSwain. Seated nearl see four attractive young ladies dressed in their uni- forms who are registered nurses in Washington. They are Corine and Lorine Coach- man, Katie Council, and Esther Blue. Farther down the hall I see several other re- gistered nurses, and they are Mary Adams and Helen Dudley. The scene changes and I am now in the business district of New York City. The 5:30 Whistle hasjust blown and the workers are leaving the Handon Electric Fac- tory where Wilbert Handon is president. Among the workers I see several young ladies. I recognize them as Isabelle Fowler, Angelene Elliott, Dorothy Monroe, and Geneva Ray are working in the city, as Secretaries of prominent lawyers and bus- inessmen. And now the scene grows strange. I hear music in the air, beautiful music. It is coming from one of the most exclusive night clubs in Chicago, Illinois. On going in, I find a. table near the band, and there I hear some beautiful music. It is coming from a trumphet played by Willie James Brewington, and a piano played by Henry Fairley. Ayoung man enters the night club and sits at a table next to me. It is Rich- ard Maddox who is a professional artist in the city, and he tells me that Vonnette Stanley and Le Gray Hines are music instructors and their studios are in the next block. He also tells me that Evelyn Brooks and Patricia Hall will appear at Carnegie Hall the following week in a Concert. The fog clears again and I see a laboratory room in Jefferson Hospital, Phila- delphia, Pa. Ayoung man with his back turned is busy at work. When he turns I dis- cover it is Milton McDonald. From my conversation with him I learn that Robert Melvin is a surgeon here in the Hospital. He tells me that Connie McNeil owns a chain of drug stores. if T- ii CJ F 7 ji KJV f! l fl v F r uplyrpcgg F xr f ,L gi , DLE QL 5 ,Q X ! gg! I leave the hospital and walk for awhile. Then my attention is attracted by a large sign onabuildingwhich reads Miller Sn Williams Funeral Home , where Minnie Williams and Issac Miller are owners. Minnie greets me at the door and she tells me that she has heard from Annie Avery and Dorothy Garner, and Annie is an out- standing designer in Paris and Dorothy is head of the Home Ec. Department at E. E. Smith. Isaac tells me that Winfield Coachman is a prominent lawyer in the city and Raymond Sessoms owns an outstanding shoe repair shop. My dream is hazy but as I hear the sounds of cheering it slowly clears. As it becomes clearer I see a most exciting game at A Sr T College in Greensboro, N. C., Where thousands of people have come to see the ball game. As the coaches come out on the field, I see that the head coaches are Aaron Melvin and William McMillian. From a conversation with one of the spectators, I learn that Rodney Williams is a Biology Teacher, and James McAllister is teaching Physical Ed. After the game I decide to find out more about the staff and this is what I learned. Nannie Brewer is a librarian and Elizabeth Gerald is a Mathmetician. Mary Young and Helen Monroe are Dieticians here. As the scene changes, I board a train to Greenwich, Connecticut where I serve the people asaDoctor. Ienter my office, there I find Howard Mitchell, who has come to the meeting of the National Veterinarian's Association. He tells me that Elizabeth Carver and Dora McRae are Commercial Instructors at North Carolina College, and they are now in Paris. During our social interchange I learned that Lois Evans is in Germany with her family. Margaret Evans, Alma Foy, Ora Malone, and Mary Melvin are teachers in Cumberland County. Mary Evans, Jarnesena McNeil, and Nancy Williams are Elementary Teachers in the city of Fayetteville, N. C. Thus with their future so clearly prophesied, may the class of '54 be inspired to further pursue their ambition. Ellen Brooks, Prophesier Vast mill fund nz-tamenf Beyond the clouds of strife shines the light that has success- fully guided us thus far. The time has come when we must part, leaving our accomplishments as footprints on the sand of time. We the Graduating Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Four bequeath to the following: To the Juniors we bequeath our mantle of dignity, also we leave the front seats in the aduitorium, hoping that they will find them as soft and as comfortable as we have. To the Sophomores we leave our ambition. To the young and unsophisticated Freshmen we leave a map of the school buildingg so that they will not get lost and roam about in everybody's way looking for their classrooms. We include the booklet Getting Around Smith High. To our Principal we leave pleasant memories of our four years together, and afeeling of pride in any noteworthy achievements that our future may contain.
