I . , L.,L pm Dyer Central Sounds Off Through Its A cademic Program 353,-f Since students go to school pri- marily to learn, the most important part of any school is its academic pro- gram. Silence prevails in the class- room as voices are hushed and laugh- ter is stifled. However, when walking through the halls, one can hear the hum of sewing machines, the muffled voices of teachers lecturing, the one- two count of calisthenics, and all the other stimulating sounds which indi- cate that students are devoting their time to study. DON MORIARTY, the trustee of St. John Township, has done much to aid the betterment of our school and community. Through his dili' gent efforts and hard work, our beautiful new school has been completed. Soon going into his sixth year as trustee, he continues to discharge his duties with willingness and efficiency. Few men could have done the excellent job that Mr. Moriarty has accomplished for his community. ,f Essential Cogs in . . . GEORGE BIBICH is the popular su- pervising principal. Purchasing of sup- plies, maintenance of equipment, hiring of teachers, and establishment of broad school policies are a few of his many duties. FRED JONES, in his three years as principal, has done much to give our school the high rating it holds, and has made it a better place in which to acquire a good education. The course of study has been broadened, the aca- demic standard raised, the IJ HESS- RIGHT program introduced, and gen- eral school spirit and morale substan- tially improved, . . . Machinery of Education DOROTHY AINSLEY and WILBUR F. GIERL are the deans of girls and boys. In addition to counseling students and adminis- tering the testing program, Mrs. Ainsley teaches senior English and sponsors the Ec- ho, the Senior Drama Club, and the Nation- al Honor Society. Mr. Gierl teaches the ac- celerated classes in algebra and geometry. Both are members of the Faculty Review Board which considers students' applica- tions for re-admission to the school. PAULINE RONJAK lcounty nurse? visits many schools in this area as a public nurse. MARY LYONS lschool nurse! is assigned to grade schools Kolling and Kahler, as. well as the high school. Not only do they give students first aid when necessary, but they also carry out the school health program which includes tuberculin testing, vaccina- tions ,and testing of both vision and hearing. Q M ge ,,.,.. 513' LELA HOWELL and KAY TRAPP are the secretary and treasurer of the school. Mrs. Howell combines many jobs under one title, in- cluding receiving visitors, keeping all records and reports of the school, training office assistants, and issuing classroom supplies to teachers. She also announces all the school news over the public ad- ! 1 f t S. 1' is dress system. Mrs. Trapp handles the complex financial end of the school, receiving and disbursing all school money. ir Ageless Studzes LQ--Q. Here Richard Shubert is showing the Class a Roman warship made by Mike Chermak. SEEING MAY BE BELIEVING, but it is also a way of learning how to understand and interpret sym- bols used to mark the pronuncia- tion of words. Vocabulary study is a basis part of the English course in all grades. Al Wilcher and Mike Chermak study the chart in the junior English classroom. Y SONGS, CUSTOMS, AND TRADI- TIONS OF OLD SPAIN enliven class- room study of Spanish. First year stu- dents look forward every year to the making of the Christmas pinata. Dyer Central High School is keeping pace with the times in preparing graduates to take their places in the scientific world of today. World Affairs Emphasize . WoUYf 1-4? STUDYING STRUCTURE AND CHARACTERISTICS of animals is a favorite part of the biology course. During the year students bring in many specimens including ham- sters, salamanders, frogs, fish, hawks, and bats. Mr. Under- wood is demonstrating the wing spread of the bat as he talks about its nocturnal activities. JIM RIESE, FRANK PEPKOWSKI, MIKE DE- LINCK, AND BILL WADDINGTON watch the amusing antics of hamsters which have been brought to physical sci- S ence class by students. X jk - 28 - . . Importance of Science PRINCIPLE OF THE LEV- ER, effect of friction and ac- celeration on falling bodies, and mechanical advantage of the inclined plane are part of the physics course of study. Rae Marie Anderson, Sherry Keil- man, Jackie Shofroth, and Earl Ciaglia watch intently as Mr. Kerns demonstrates an inclin- ed plane. EXPERIMENTS PERFORM- ED IN CHEMISTRY CLASS include making oxygen and hy- drogen, producing crystals, comparing acids and bases, and bending glass tubes as Paul Grummer and Frank Keilman are doing in this picture. Classes Teach Homemaking . . . z l 5 PREPARING FOOD BUDGETS, planning and cooking meals, and learn- ing the etiquette of serving are included in the freshman home economics course. Georgia Brietzke and Jo Ann Sizemore put the finishing touches on a layer Cake while Janet Grafton and Carole Horner admire their cup- cakes. - 30 - IN THE KITCHEN OF HIS APARTMENT, Principal Jones is both teacher and pupil in his exclusive home economics course. IN THE FIRST YEAR SEWING CLASS, Carol Schutz and Rose Stage finish their aprons while Judy Peck starts her skirt. Dur- ing the first semester, students must complete a blouse, an apron, a skirt, and something of their own choosing. . and Occupational Skills MECHANICAL DRAWING TAKES CONCENTRATON AND EXACT- NESS and is recommended to boys wishing to become architects, engi- neers, or designers. The boys are taught the basic steps in making ar- chitectural drawings, drawing blue- prints, and lettering. Bob Svast finds that it takes time and effort to make a precision drawing. .3 ff ALTHOUGH AN INTERESTING AND RESULT- PRODUCING CLASS, one must be careful when work- ing with all the machines and tools in metal shop. Many small projects are done by the freshman and sophomore boys, such as hammers, vices, punches, and depth and surface gauges. The upper classmen work on more com- plex projects - for example, couch and chair frames, and wrought iron furniture. Mr. Milby also includes a small course on welding in metal shop. Here, he is explaining to Tom Schafer, Bill Parsons, and Mike Krager how to operate a lathe. -ill- WOOD SHOP PREPAR ES BOYS FOR becoming carpenters cabinetmakers and furniture designers In this shop class Larry Wilson Jim Bauske Char les Clavier Tom Johnson Dale Mobley Bob Cro sariol and Ed Koch are all working on their pro- jects. HOURS OF PRACTICE, the responsi- of representing our school are part ofthe bility of organizing yells, and the honor important job of being a cheerleader. vu-.mx Q Q Dyer Central Sounds Off Through Its Sports In this modern world, health and vitality are considered almost essen- tial in the making of a well-rounded student. Our sports program not only promotes these qualities, but also en- courages teamwork and good sports- manship. The shrill whistle of the re- feree ,the screams of the crowds, the pop of leather as our team charges in- to the line of an opponent, the barbs of the quarterback as he calls the jump numbers, and the chatter of the baseball team during an important game all offer proof that sports bring to mind sound as well as action. S+, 3-W7 4- Coach Stokes Indians Place . Under the guidance of their new coach, single-wing advocate Tom Stokes, the Dyer Central Indians made a fine record. The boys start- ed the season with only a few returning lettermen, but they progres- sed steadily and molded themselves into a sturdy unit. The Indians finished the season 6-4 by winning the last 5 games and finished 5-2 in the conference, which was good for second place. In the opening game the boys lost to Highland 25 to 7. They won the next game by out-fighting Portage 18 to 13, with Bill Crowley scoring two touchdowns. The Indians then lost 3 straight games, to Merrillville 18-0, Gary Edison 20-19, and Thornton Fractional South 19-6. The Indians then traveled to Crestmore Coun- try Club for the sectional meet, and placed 7th out of 26 teams, which included Michigan City, La Porte, and Valparaiso. The seasons final record was 8-1. Good balance, with emphasis on teamwork instead of stardom, was responsible for our success. Charles Palm made the best time for the year with a respec- table 10' 30 for the two mile course.
