This record is misleading due to the fact that nineteen freshmen participated on the junior varsity team. The Indians lost their first game to Portage 22-6, inexperience proving to be the deciding factor. On the following Monday the Indians held Merrillville to a 6-6 tie. The next two games were lost to Gary Edison and Gary Wirt by scores of 6-0 and 19-0, respectively. Still seeking their first victory, the Indians were held to a 13-13 tie by River Forest, and the following week were beaten by East Gary 32-0. In the last game of the year the host Indians were tied 6-6 by Lowell. Looking back over the season, we do not think of the record, but of the experience and poise these boys gained from participating in football. Although Gene Wolanin's major assignment is teaching math and science in the 8th grade, he thoroughly enjoys his work as assistant football coach.
