All senior girls contributed time to this project, but the camera caught only Ianice Thompson, Betty Bowers, Lois Hogan and Betty Wood. Mrs. Hoffman is justly proud of the professional looking dresses and suits made by her sewing seniors. Cor- nelius Vanderkolk, or Coach Van as he is known to everyone, has achieved an enviable record of 17 victories, 9 defeats, and 3 ties. A marine veteran of World War II, Van was an all-time foot- ball great at St. Ioseph College in 1940-41. After the war, he received his master's degree at Purdue University. Before coming to Dyer in 1950 he served a brief stretch with the Chicago Rockets profes- sional football team, following which he was athletic director at Marmion Military Academy in Aurora. Van is exceptionally pop- ular with the students and the townspeople, and it is hoped that he will long be a member of the high school staff. Peifer. vi oio not cv' ofleioo op o'5'le9 l ,gido Grid Indians On September 13, Coach Vanderkolk's Indian gridders launched their 1953 campaign on an un- happy note by losing to Portage 13-0, in a game which dedicated the latter's new field. The game was bitterly contested, but the Indians were unable to put together a sustained drive and were blanked. The Indians broke into the win column a week later when they whitewashed Gary Wirt by a 12-0 count. The following week the Panthers of Griffith fell before Dyer in a 6-0 ball game. The Griffith fans like to think of this game as an upset, but to broadminded fans who saw it, it was clearly a case of the better team winning. The next week the Indians suffered a natural letdown and a stinging 24-12 setback. A week later the Indians ran into a rugged North lud- son crew and absorbed a 25-6 licking. The following Friday, October 10, was homecoming, and Dyer met Gar Edison the eventual co-cham s of the Calumet Y I P conference. The Indian line played its best game of the season and limited the powerful Edison offense to a lone score, but Dyer was unable to score and lost 6-0. On Saturday afternoon of the next week, Dyer journeyed to Crete, Ill., and lost a hardfought 13-0 game to Crete-Monee, Kankakee Valley Con- ference champs. 09' 009 3111 pe H100 11 . ,ack lo MQW Vol Uqbl 9 P 9 X lake 'Z Afrconfe Teac eu Break Even With two wins and five losses, it looked as though Dyer would have its first losing season in the school's history. But when the Indians took the field against Lowell they used the new Vanderkolk spread to down the Red Devils 14-7. Oak Lawn proved no match for the rejuvenated Indians the next week and was routed 41-14. The Pirates oi Merrillville supplied the Indians with some tough opposition in the final game of the season, but came out on the short end of a 19-13 score. Post season honors were awarded to Bill Pen- man, rugged 200 pound tackle, when he was voted to the all conference team. Bill also received honor- able mention for all-state. Ernie Iostes was voted honorary captain by his teammates, and Penman was voted most valuable player. In looking back over the season, a great deal of credit belongs to Coach Van as well as all of the boys.
