zos MAN OF THE SOIL Did you ever see the man of the soil Whose heart, whose mind, whose whole being Never goes beyond the earth Upon which his feet are Stolidly planted? Where his hands are made To claw and grub among the rot Which constitutes the soil. The man whose job is that of a worm, Dredging the soil, Watering it, protecting it, babying it Like a newly conceived babe. The ground is his infant And the sky is its crib. The green grass is the blanket, The loam is the sheet. The rain is the milk To ake its youth bloom m . And the earth answers His call When the man of the soil Has the seed of life sown. --- Richard Weicker. OH, FOR GOODNESS' SAKE! One morning as I lay in bed, I heard the loud thunder over head. What a terrible blast! Would it forever last? Suddenly my head seemed to shake Violently --- this was no fake! I knew---I knew---it was an earthquake. Suddenly I realized it was only me and not the bed that was shaking--- Maybe this was only an earthquake in the making. So, I tried to arise --- And much to my surprise, It was only I that was shaking. I stepped from my bed, shaking from foot to head. I called for the maid, and ordered hot lemonade. I told her the doctor must be notified, But still I wasn't satisfied --- Why was I worried so? I must know! Page Sixty-Six At last Doctor Dew arrived. What! --- Are you still alive? I had never seen this Doctor Dew What would he make me rue? Just my temperature he took And recorded it, normal in a book. Then he took my pulse beat, Which was no treat. After a complete examination of me --- his shaking patient, He said, Your health is perfect, I can find no reason for your defect. Suddenly I felt a terrible bang on my head. I thought sure I must be dead, So I did the last thing, And pinched myself till it did sting--- Hol Ho! --- What a foolish thing, I had only been dreaming. --- By Virginia Kepplinger.
