J. , , . , . ' a Wg, ,iam gym-+V' wh gofm Winkin Lbeobcafion Coach john Wfinkin, born in Englewood, graduated from our school in 1937. He was a Dwight Morrow athlete, earning his letters in soccer, basketball and baseball. In Duke University he was a three-letter man, too. He was commissioned in the Navy in Aug- ust 1941. Wiiikin was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. During the World Wzir, he was in every major battle in the Pacific- Coral Sea, Midway and the surrender of japan. He was honorably discharged, after five years of service, with the high rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U. S. N. R. After returning to civilian life, he became a member of the staff of Sfwrfrr magazine. But soon he returned to his first love-high school athletics. Every bit of his day is now devoted to the athletics of Dwight Morrow. Wfith great pleasure we dedicate the Engle Log of 1954 to you. Our first project was to publicize Key Club and to vote in new members. Key Club undertook its regular projects of selling book covers and distributing floor plans to the incoming sophomores. Key Club also checked coats at dances and other affairs at the school. The boys of Key Club initiated the selling of Review Books to the students at almost cost. Our major project was the Key and Tower Club Auction of which joel Feiner, a Key Club member, was the head. The auction was a tremendous success grossing about 3200 proht. Key Club collected money for the Red Cross, and was commended by the President of the Red Cross Drive. At Fun Nite, Key Club had one of the top money-making concessions. Key Club and the Kiwanis Club are planning to subsidize the purchase Of Key Club jackets. Contrary to what it may seem, Key Club is not all work and no play. As a group, the Key Club went to Radio City Music Hall. Almost every week four boys were sent to the Kiwanis meeting and luncheon. The club year ended with the election of Offcers and many plans for the future. The contest brought in a large return for the S.O. Many of the Tawasi girls have been working in the Englewood Hospital again this year, since the project was so successful last year. In April we put together some very interesting joke books for St, Albens Hospital in Brooklyn. During Easter we put together a basket of food for a needy family. W'e brought this year to a close with our spring dinner, We wish to thank Miss Pokorny for all the help and inspiration she has given us throughout the season. The over- all record was six up and three down. Mike McPartland, junious Daniels, Minner Williams, and Tom Shaw were named to the all county .teams. Trailing the Teaneck Highwaymen for most of the season, the Winkin-men rallied to win their last two remaining games and gain their fourth straight League title. Although this year's team had many early setbacks, because of injuries to Bob Hirsch, Captain Gerry Grusky, Bob Springer, and john Riviello, the Raiders have finally found themselves and are currently in the semi-finals of the Greater Newark Tournament. At the start of the season Winkin tried numerous experiments, but finally came up with a set line up. Frank Weber held down the initial sack, the keystone was guarded by sophomores, Tony Zash, Ron Massi, and Freddie Conrad, who was stationed at the hot corner. The outfield found Mike McPartland, john Riviello and jack Lanza from left to right. After several trials Nip Goodwin became the Raiders number one pitcher followed by Don Perkins, Herb Carr, Bob Springer, and Bill Kross. Tony Stivalo handled the catching job for the full season. B-oo Hagen and Rog Knauth were the all around utility men filling in wherever needed. . Englewood, however, did have its share of glory when it whipped Ridgewood, the co-state champions 3 to 2 early in the season. Ridgewood went on to avenge this loss by beating the Smith men 3 to 0 and lastly 2 to 1 in the State Championship playoff. The league season was one of constant turmoil, for Englewood trailed Teaneck in the standings down to the very last week. A 3-3 tie in the final Englewood-Teaneck game put the Maroon just one point behind the Highway men. The Maroon met Hack- ensack's Comets and with the pressure on, avenged an earlier season tie, by routing the Comets 3 to 1. This put the Raiders one point up on the Highway Men.
