Miss BUTTERWORTH MR. IDANYSON ADMINISTRATIUN VVINTON J. VVHITE Supcrihiehdclzt of Englewood Schools GEORGE W. PAULSEN Principal of Dwight Morrow High School J. PIARVEY COU LTER Vice-Principal of Dwight M owow High School FOREWORD --- FROM LITTLE ACORNS GROW IN PRESENTINGMTHIS Loc from the Engle Woods, we seniors hope that it may serve in part as an inspiration to the young twigs who are soon to take our places in the forest. Indeed, it was a scant three years ago that we too were saplings, with perhaps a little moist sawdust behind our ears and birds' nests in our hair. However, in the course of these three years, our roots have become firmly imbedded in the rich soil of the Engle Woods, and we have grown to be sturdy young timber with our heads held high among the other trees of our size. But we have not spread our branches too far, for the faculty with prudent pruning, has prevented our shade from stunting the growth of the seedlings below us. These same woodsmen have seen to it that we have not been humps on the Log , or given to barking up the wrong tree 3 instead, they have helped us spread our roots in all directions so that we may better hold our own in the stormy winds that are to bend our branches in the future. Even the stafl' on which I lean is hewn from the same tried and seasoned wood-all chips from the same block-and it is their wish as well as mine that by leaving this fine, sturdy Log on which our deeds are engraved, we will blaze a trail that will guide future seniors to greater and greater achievements. As MERE SHAVINGS we left the Junior High School and became Sophomores in Dwight Morrow High School. But it didnlt take us long to get acquainted and organized as a class. Mrs. Engelke, Miss Butterworth, and Mr. Dawson took us in hand and managed our elections. The linal vote declared Drew Brinkerhoff, President: Jean Coulter, Vice-President: Jeanne Horton, Secretary, and Billy Beach, Treasurer. During the course of the year a 1novie benefit was sponsored and a successful dance, the Sophomore Hop, held April 30. On becoming Juniors, we again scored a financial success with another movie benefit and the Junior Spring Fling, our original form of the traditional Junior dance. Edwary Aubry held the reins of power as President during 1937 while Jean Coulter took over that position for 1938. Bud Baker kept the minutes and Jeanne Horton the account books. Many of the Junior boys upheld the honor of the class in the various sports while the girls did likewise. Our Senior year was crowned with suc- cess and crowded with activities. The ballot boxes revealed Thomas Tisza as President, Billy Beach, Vice-Presidentg Jeanne Horton, Secretary, and Dorothy Conklin, Treasurer. The nights of March 24 and 25 saw the class of 139 reach an unprecedented height, when a group of outstanding Seniors presented Death Takes a Holiday to capacity audiences at Roosevelt School. Jimmy Crump and Joan DeMott took the leading roles, sup- ported by an excellent cast. Several Senior Boys became the leaders of the Englewood City Government, May 16. On June 8, Hill-Billy Dayu was the object of the Senior Class-day program, and on June Z0 the class went off for a good time at Rye Beach. The annual Senior Prom was held June 22nd and the following day we bid a sad and somewhat teary farewell to our school days and to Dwight Morrow High School. B. A. Bug interrupts the regular program of Morton's Multi- plying Muscles to bring you a special news broadcast. A huge swarm of mental monsters are approaching the city from every direction of Engle-Woods. There is no cause for alarm! We have every reason to believe it is only Brother B. taking the 1959 Sophs on a modernized bugology tour to determine the results of the great migration of '39, when over two hundred bugs suddenly left Dwight Morrow High. They have crossed the famous George Chudik Bridge and are coming down the great Whitey Way, where just last night, james I. Crump scored his latest Hop, Bees in Your Bonnet, with Robert Lyle and joan DeMott, the screen's great lovers, co-Hopping. fTry again, Mr. Crump, it surely isn't talent you're lackinglj From the base of Tisza Triangle, they have spread out in all directions, notebooks in hand, ready for anything. At Gerdes Hall some are listening with awe to the liery phrases of the world dictator, Henry Formon, Miss Freeman's former protege, as he expounds Jack Stahlberger's theory of Democracy for de masses of de woild . fOrchids to Miss Freemanj. just around the corner at Peper's Poetic Society many others are held in rapture by the inspiring words of Nick Scutiero and Philip Sakewitz, the unsuccessful window-washers who discovered they had the souls of poets. CAnd de woim's toinedj. Well, how education has progressed! A group of young stirs have just checked everything at Beach's Better Tight Night Club, where Lenny Hansen and Margaret Vokes are swinging their version of Sing You Sinners , and Howard Hageman's Mathematically Precise Mad Musicians beat it out in a syncopated ratio! Some of the more aesthetic natured youths have procured tickets to Tro De Bul , Drew BrinkerhoFf's operatic extravaganza, starring jack Stanley, the leading contender of the Metropolitan Uproar. The cast is supported CFD by Harold Tepe, ballet master of Sissy Muckleroy's Body-Bender Ballet fHooJ, and Doris Jones, far fetched toe treader, for her blank interpretation of the Dance of the Muscle Shows . Another group is now wandering down Nelson Boulevard. It has just come upon the city's bewildered woman, Jean Coulter, still searching for a faithful man. fTsk, tsk, what happened to James I.?j Farther down the street they have stopped to gaze in amazement at the sign in front of Anthony Poggi's School for Languages, which announces Bob Halliday's appointment to pro- fessorship of Greek Cit's still Greek to him.j The specimens of femininity you see examining the display windows at Stan Miller's are cooing over the originality of I. Mackinnon Vallance's latest artistic creation-Scotch lingerie. The man with the package who just left the window gazers is Bob Lusskin, a veteran traveling salesman who married a cute trick from Brook Line C and Sinkerbj and is still traveling. We now flash you to Beau Merritt's Superfluously Scientific We Search Laboratories where several of the bugologv students are watching the antics of Harold Hersam, now feverishly engrossed in his latest theory-that by dividing a vacuuous vacuum into its component parts, it is proven that nothing is some- thing! flt is only a step between a genius and a madmanj To complete our picture, Ladies and Gentlemen. we take you to the City Sanitorium, where Leila Gentleman thinks she's running an Insane Asylum for dizzy Blondes. According to the directing physician. Grace Strachan, P.A.D., LQ., P.S., it is doubtful that the stricken woman will ever be sane enough to leave its grounds. The young investigators are filled with pity over the tragedy. This concludes our special broadcast. For further details read your local newspaper ---. We now return you to Multiplying Muscles. GUNE BY THE BOARD WE, THE MEMBERS of the graduating class of 1939, being of more or less sound mind and intention, having spent four active years in this institution of learning, can look back and contentedly hand oveu the reins of school government to those underclassmen who follow. JUNIOR CLASS The junior Class now has an adequate treasury with which to greet the forth- coming year, due to the sponsoring of Madame Serova's Dancing Class. This class was as successful for the dancers as for the junior Class. Fortunately we have two able advisors, Mr. Wardell and Miss Scott. Mr. Vtfardell was of great assistance in conducting the dancing classes and the Junior Prom. The junior Prom was held on April 28th, and was well attended. The music was supplied by the Melody Club. Our junior athletes, girls as well as boys, showed up well under fire on the varsity teams. All in all, we see bright prospects of the junior Class emerging from the Green VVood stage to take its place among trees in the senior forest. SOPHOMORE CLASS Led by jack Baker, President, George Suppes, Vice President, and l.ouis Powell, Secretary Treasurer, with Mr. VVildrick and Mrs. Bates advising us, we, the class of '41, started off this year by giving a successful Sophomore 'fget-togetheru in order to become better acquainted with our classmates. This was followed by a Hard-Times dance which was unique not only for its costumes, but also for the distinction of being the first dance in many years to show so great a profit. This year over two hundred of us paid our dues, which will be a goal to shoot at in our junior year. Our main assets for having another successful year are a fat treasury and a great deal of youthful ambition. GREE WGUD JU IOR l'1'c'sirlL-111 . If this is so, the strength of Dwight Morrow is as unbounded as its possibilities. The stu- dents of this institution have at their dis- posal every kind of extra-curricular activity that is necessary for a broad and comprehensive education. These same students may participate in as many and as varied activities as they wish. For those who are literarily inclined, there are clubs and organizations such as Belles Lettres, The Oracle, and the year book itself, The Engle Log. For those who wish to belong to service or social clubs there are Tri-Y, Hi-Y, Pickwick and Diversity. Masque and VVig and the Senior Play will take care of any aspiring thespiang the Outing Club, Bit and Bridle, and Spade and Hoe, are established for the out-door typeg while the French, German and Math clubs are for those of us who like to use our talents in those particular lines. The prima donnas are taken care of by the Choral Clubsg the virtuosos by the Band, Or- chestra, and Fife and Drum Corpsg while the boys and girls with the bulging fore- heads and gifted grey-matter, find them- selves at home in the newly established Honor Society. The Student Organization is the nerve. center for all the activities of the students and is run with the efficiency that is expected of a great school such as ours. The organization itself consists of representatives from every student activity in the school. lt is required that all clubs must belong to the S. With its many activities it has succeeded in in- stilling a spirit of cooperation in the school. The Fall season saw Hi-Y mem- bers out front selling football pro- grams and banners at all home games. Later in the season, they sold similar programs at home basketball games. The school is indebted to this club for its ob- taining a modern scoreboard for use in basketball games. Not only does this club rate high- ly in its own school, but Bergen County has given it Ace rating. Its' services have indirectly extend- ed throughout the County. By ar- ranging accident Spot maps for the safety course, it added to the safety of car-driving students and to safer and saner driving. Each year Hi-Y holds, its Father and Son Dinner. This remains a memorable and enjoyable occasion to all those who attend. The dele- gates from this high school took an active part in the state conference of Hi-Y clubs. Perhaps its greatest service to Dwight Morrow High is the one- hundred and fifty dollar scholar- ship which they offer. Their ac- tivities of the year had this im- portant gift as an objective. No time was lost in getting started when in November the club held its annual junior Red Cross membership drive. At Thanksgiv- ing baskets were given to the poor. This year Diversity acted as hos- tess at the College Tea given just before Christmasg at Christmas they gave candy-filled stockings to the children at Bergen Pines Hos- pital and assorted gifts to the vet- erans at Lyons Home. Through the Red Cross, birthday gifts were given to the poor children whose birthdays occurred in April. On May fifth, the animal formal dance was held in the Cafeteria. Later in the year the girls in the club en- tertained their mothers at what they hope to make a yearly tea. In the early part of june the club went away for a week-end. The year was topped perfectly when, with the money earned through card parties, sales, and a Hobo Day, the club proudly presented, for the first time in its history, a scholar- ship of one-hundred dollars toward the college education of some worthy girl. The office-holders in Diversity are the following: President, Marie Lou Muckleyg Vice-president, Dorothy Conklin, Secretary, Betty Boustead and Treasurer, Juanita De Mott. PICKWICK TUE Pickwick CLUB was organ- ized in 1915, and it was originally a literary club. The name of the club was suggested by their study of the 'fPickwick Papers. Two of the charter members were Miss Van Zandt and Mrs. Eckerseng Miss Freeman was the first ad- visor. The membership has gradu- ally grown from the original fif- teen girls to the present total of twenty-five. Each year the major social event has been a dance, this year it took the form of a Silver Ball given just prior to the Christmas vacation. The event of secondary importance was a theater party in New York attended by the entire club. Much interest has been taken this year in the fostering of a schol- arship fund. In order to raise money for this project, the club sponsored a bridge benefit, a movie benefit, and several cake sales. The officers this year are: President, Doris Haight, Vice- President, Caroline MacLean g Sec- retary, Dorothy Rose, and Treas- urer, Enid Little. TRI-Y TRI-Y began its season with the resolution to further its purpose in both service and social activities. It made a one-hundred scholarship its goal and attained the objective. Through a series of sales and a fashion show, Tri-Y raised the needed money which is given to a senior girl at the graduation ex- ercises. In the fall, Tri-Y took charge of the girls' meeting of the Family Relations Institute, checked hats and coats at the Visual Education dinner, and not less important, made kimonos for the refugee babies in Europe. The club had its share of fun by attending many Splash Parties at the Hackensack Y. M. C. A., and a week-end visit to Shady Side Lodge proved enjoyable. A very important step was tak- en when the club joined the County Council from which they received many benefits, and to which they hope to contribute much. The activities for the year were closed by the induction of new members. The club officers are as follows: President, Dorothea Zavertnikg Vice-president, Leila Gentleman 5 Secretary, Juanita De Mott, Treas- urer, Eleanor Nelson. Tri-Y Club Pick wick Club SE IOR PLAY IT Is THE CONSENSUS or fJPlN1ON that Death Takes a Holiday , the Senior Play of the Class of 139. was the finest in many and many a year. This play is a very difficult one, and had it not been for the cooperation of all those involved and the excelltnt directing of Miss Latham, it could never have been given. The role of Death was played by James Crump, literally it was -lanies Crump. He played this difhcult part with the ease and grace that could only have come through a depth of understanding and a sincere belief in every line. Baron Caesarea was done by Drew llrinkerliorf. This portrayal of the lusty, lovable, laughable old baron was done so perfectly, that from the first to the last line, Drew held his audience in the very twinkle of his eye. The very difficult part of Grazia, a sprightly and dreamy girl, was played in a delightfully natural way by joan De Mott. The smooth, sophisticated, svelte character of Alda, was beautifully enacted by smooth, sophisticated Jean Coulter. To Grace Strachan for her interpretation of Stephanie. goes many and many an orchid. The same for her opposite, Bob Lusskin. and full credit cannot possibly be given in this short space, for the excellent performances turned out by Jeannie Bisselle, Bob Lyle, Jack Stanley, and Bob Halliday. Suffice it to say that the minor parts were coordinated with the smoothness seldom found in amateur dramatics. E MASQUE AN WIC 'llllli QJFIPICICRS of the Masque anal XYig are as follows: handsome. clebonair. Rav Stone. XVith this clistinguishecl cast it is only natural that Masque and XYig should soiu' to greater heights, as it has. This club has always been an active one, and this year was no exception, liesicles their regular activities of the year-a dance and the Night of Plays-this club all but took over the whole Senior Play. The clubs new adviser, Miss Latham, was in charge of the Senior Play. and most of the starring roles were taken by members ol the Masque anrl XYig. The starring role was taken by our own Y. l'. ancl the Duke ancl the Baron as well as Ciraizia anrl .Xlrla were playecl by members of the club. The Masque antl XVig formal was given early in the year, and was a great success socially, if not linancially. The Night ol' l'lays was a huge success in both ways and was praisecl by the public as well as by the Treasurer. These Plays-four in all-were well cast and uncler stutlent clirection for the most part. Many new discoveries were marle on that night, ontstancfing among these were lieverly Yolk, beautiful and tal, ntecl young Sophomore twhose brother is a M. and XY. alumuusj, and jack Atkinson txwhose brother was also an alumnusb. Only one loss, by a score of eight to zero, suffered at the hands of her traditional rivals, the Rutherford Bulldogs, marred the nearly perfect record of the Maroons. In addition to finishing second in the N. N. J. I. L., Englewood also topped the County in scoring with a total of one hundred and ninety-six points. This is an average of twenty-one and seven tenths points per game. The next highest scorer garnered only forty points. Starting the season with only four veterans, Pete Melucis, Tony Poggi, Boots Harper, and Ed Aubry, the Maroon appeared weak. Even the most optimistic Englewood fans would not venture to predict a good year for their team. Coach Pat McKinley, while not inclined to be pessimistic, did not cherish any illusions about the nineteen 'thirty-eight team. He knew that the loss of eight regulars had weakened his squad considerably, but he expected the new men to develop and give the other league schools a good battle. The Englewood attack depended almost entirely upon Captain Melucis, burly half-back and bright spot on Coach McKinley's horizon. Melucis, one of the outstanding backs in the county the previous year, had been showing his stuff in the scrimmages and therefore had most of the plays centering on him. Paired with Melucis at the half-back post was speedy BootsU Harper. Harper, who can run like a jack-rabbit, could be a dangerous man in the open field, if shaken loose. Anthony Poggi was a sure thing for the blocking quarter- back post, Vincent Path Noroski, a big sophomore, was the most likely candi- date for the fullback post. NVhile the backfield was fairly well established, the line presented the greatest difficulty. Aubry, the only veteran linesman, was a sure bet for the pivot post. One of the flanking guard positions was certain to go to George Chubbyl' Chudik, a first rate substitute from the previous year. The other guard position was a toss-up between Drew Brinkerhoff and Eugene Iaconetti, with lke', expected to win. The tackles were uncertain also, John Slugo', Magnotta, Lenny'l Hansen, and t'Buck Whitlatch, were the major candidates. Ned Bennett, lanky track captain, was a fixture at one end, while Ray Steinbacher, of Baseball fame, was slated for the other. This was the line-up as the Dwight Morrow eleven took the field for the first game of the season against the Tigers of Tenafiy. Paced by the four touch- down performance of Captain Pete'l, Englewood proceeded to drub Tenafly to the tune of fifty-nine to nothing, the greatest score ever rolled up by an Engle- wood eleven. To add to the general trouncing, is the fact that the varsity played less than half of the game. Englewood High's steamroller offense--his name is Pete Melucis-added another victim to its list a week later when it broke down the resistance of a stubborn Cliffside Park team and won by a score of thirteen, to nothing. Melucis' two touchdowns provided the margin of victory. The following week the passing attack of T eaneck High School's Highway- 111611 almost proved to be too much for the Maroon, but Pete crashed over for two touchdowns, stiffening the Englewood attack and bringing the game to a triumphal finish of twenty-six to thirteen. Leonia, one week later, had little to offer against the make-shift line of the Englewood eleven, which won by a score of nineteen to nothing as Melucis again dominated the play by scoring all three touchdowns. b An inspired Hackensack eleven proved to be the most troublesome oppon- ent yet encountered as it forced the Maroons to play their best in order to win. As usual, Melucis scored, but only once. For the first time, it became apparent to spectators thaq instead of just ten other guys named Joe , Englewood had some excellent football talent on the field, as the Maroons triumphed by fourteen to six. By a score of thirteen to nothing, Englewood won over the Scarlet' of Ridge- field Park, which had been threatening Englewood all season. Two touchdowns by Melucis accounted for the winning total. Englewood's arch rival, Rutherford, again spoiled the Maroon's perfect record as the Bulldogs won by a score of eight to: nothing. Except. for the touch- down by Nicol and safety by Ray Steinbacher, who saved Englewood from losing by two touchdowns, the game was evenly contested, neither team having the advantage. Melucis again starred for the Maroons. The score by which Englewood swamped Ridgewood one week later was thirty-eight to nothing. Ridgewood had little to offer as Melucis smashed his way to five touchdowns. Englewood vs. St. Cecilia provided one of the most thrilling and bitterly contested gridiron clashes ever played in Bergen County. A forty-five yard pass from Melucis to Bennett in the last twenty-one seconds of play provided the tying points. A few seconds later, Melucis won the game by smashing through the line for the extra point, giving Englewood the victory by fourteen to thirteen as the game ended. This was a fitting climax with which to end the nineteen thirty-eight Football Season.
