He was designated a naval aviator in April 1971. He received orders to the Silver Foxes of VA-155 and made two A-7B deployments to the West- ern Pacific and the Indian Ocean embarked in USS Oriskany CCVA-345. In October 1974, he re- ported to VA-122 flying the A-7C!E as a weapons and ACM instructor while assigned as Training Officer. In 1977, CAPT Cech joined the East Coast Navy as a VA-72 Blue Hawk deploying in USS John F. Kennedy CCV-675. In May 1980, he became the Fleet Training Officer on the staff of Commander Light Attack Wing 1. Thirteen months later he joined Commander, Carrier Air Wing 17, as Opera- tions Officer, making two deployments embarked in USS Forrestal CCV-595 while flying with the VA-83 Rampagers. . In September 1983, CAPT Cech joined the Sunliners of VA-81 as the executive officer, he as- sumed command of the squadron in March 1985. Following his squadron command, he joined USS Saratoga CCV-605 as operations officer. He next reported to Cecil Field in June 1989 as eXecutive officer, followed by a command tour to Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory. In December 1992, CAPT Cech assumed command of Light Attack Wing 1 at Cecil Field, Fla., which was then redesignated Strike-Fighter Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. CAPT Cech has over 4,800 hours flight time, primarily in the A, B, C and E models of the A-7 Corsair and 951 arrested landings. He has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, four Meritorious Service Medals, 15 Strike!Flight Air Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals with Combat HV and various other service awards. CAPT Cech and his wife, Chris, reside in Orange Park, Fla. Their daughter, Jennifer, graduated from the University of North Florida and is married to a United States Marine.

He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. Commissioned through Aviation Officer Candidate School, he won naval aviatoris wings of gold in February 1970. Flying F-4 Phantoms in Fighter Squadron One Hundred Two CVF-1025, CAPT Gemmill made two Mediterranean deployments in USS Independence CCV 625. He graduated first in his class from U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, Md., in 1974, then flew developmental test flights in F-8 Crusaders, F-4 Phantoms, F-14 Tomcats, and A-4 A Skyhawks. He retumed to Test Pilot School in 1976 as an instructor. From July 1977 through July 1979, CAPT Gemmill completed another Mediterranean deployment as Assistant CATCC Officer and then served as Air Operations Officer in USS Nimitz CCVN 685. In 1980, he joined Fighter Squad- ron One Hundred Forty-Three CVF-1435 flying F-14 Tomcats from USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CCVN 695. As Opera- tions Officer, he completed a record-breaking Indian Ocean deployment of 254 days with only five days in port during the Iranian hostage crisis. As Maintenance Officer, he made two more deployments to the North Atlantic and Mediterra- nean in IKE. CAPT Gemmill then served one year as a Test Coordinator for Commander, Operational Test and Evalua- tion Force in Norfolk, Va. g As Executive Officer of Fighter Squadron T hirty-Two CVF-325 flying F-14 Tomcats, he completed two more deploy- ments in USS Independence CCV 625, including combat flights over Lebanon during 1983 and 1984. After taking com- mand of VF-32, he completed another Mediterranean deployment in USS John F. Kennedy CCV 675. Following Naval Nuclear Power Training, CAPT Gemmill reported as Executive Officer of USS Theodore Roosevelt CCVN 715. He served through her maiden Mediterranean deployment and helped host historic visits by top Soviet military and government officials before detaching in July 1990. CAPT Gemmill commanded USS San Jose CAFS 75 from December 1990 through July 1992. He made two deploy- ments to the North Arabian Sea and Arabian Gulf during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He took command of USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in March 1993, where IKE helped implement cooperative engagement capability CCEC5 and landed 2,000 men of the Army's 10th Mountain Division CLight Infantry5 in Haiti at the start of Operation Support Democracy. IKE deployed to the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, and Mediterranean in October 1994. CAPT Gemmill has 3,800 flight hours and 950 carrier landings. He has a Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, the First Strike!Flight Air Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and several campaign awards. CAPT Gemmill is married to the former Letitia Harris of Roxboro, N.C. They live in Virginia Beach with their sons, Alan and William.
