THE PAR My desire and intention is to provide in my native town for a higher degree of instruction in the mathematics, geography, history, languages, and other branches of good learning than the common school, but not to provide a substitute for such schools so important to be constantly maintained. This quote is taken from the will of George Partridge, an educator and military and civic leader from Duxbury in the early 1800's. His will stipulated that S10,000. be left in trust until a proper amount of interest could be accumulated to erect a building and form a school of higher learning. He left other instructions as to the administration, the students, and the curriculum. In 1840, the trustees deemed that enough money had been collected to begin construction. The building, which was to become Partridge Academy, was completed on December 16, 1844 on the site of what is now the new town hall, First classes were held in January of 1845. Out of eighty-two applicants, fifty-two were accepted with those from Duxbury given priority, as was requested in the will. Students of Partridge Academy studied such diverse subjects as orthography tspellingi, reading, writing, arithmatic, geography, grammer, histo- ry, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, rhetoric, elocution, surveying, navigation, bookeeping, astronomy, natural philosophy, anatomy and physiology, geology, botany tstudy of plantsj, natural history, composi- tion, Latin, Greek, and French. In April of 1874, the town of Duxbury took control of Partridge Academy in an agreement between the board of trustees and the town's school committee. lt remained the town's high school until 1926 when the high school was moved to what is now the Upper Alden Elementary School. One year later, Duxbury's first high school yearbook was published. The book was named Partridge in honor of the Academy and has retained this title to the present day.
