What mankind hoped to learn in its outward push is Who is actually in charge of the Universe, and what all creation is all about. Mankind tlung its advance agents ever outward, ever outward. Eventually, it flung them out into space, into the colorless, tasteless, weightless sea of outwardness without end. It flung them like stones. These unhappy agents found what had already been found in abundance on Earth - a nightmare of meaninglessness without end. The bounties of space, of infinite outwardness, were three: empty heroics, low comedy, and pointless death. Outwardness lost, at last, its imagined attractiveness. Only inwardness remained to be explored. Only the human soul remained terra incognita. This was the beginning of goodmess and wisdom. From Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut All, All ofa Piece ' All, all of a piece throughout: Thy chaste had a beast in view, Thy wars brought nothing about: Thy lovers were all untrue. 'Tis well an old age 'is out, And time to begin a new. From The Seculdr Masque by john Dryden 4 30 ,gf ' L Plea for an Answer One great step is over, and many of the golden gift years are gone, yet still a stranger to myself, I go on. So be my fate. Many people and times I've known will be gone ' from me without a trace. I look into my future past. What is to be- come of my life? Where is the lighted way? May I find the answer some day. Tormented an I, for I have no idea which door will lead me to the highest sky. God, hear my cry: no more pain and wondering why. Each day I live, each day I die. Bill Desmond I Reflections: Within and Beyond Dedicated to Iohn Sullivan To write an essay in praise of Mr. Iohn Sullivan's best qualities, keeping in style with the traditional yearbook dedication, would be a tremendous re- dundancy. For has not the senior class already completed this task for me? Surely their overwhelming vote for Mr. Sullivan is the true dedication, and this endeavor only the formality that follows. There is. however, one of Mr. Sulli- van's qualities which would best tie together all of our feelings for this remarkable teacher. I am sure the members of the senior class would all agree that there is something in his lectures, his discussions, and his clas- sically witty personality which comes through to each individual student. It is in this spirit that Mr. Sullivan's dedication is written, with the hope that as time flies past and we again read this dedication we will all reflect back on what Mr. Sullivan meant to each of us personally. Thank you, Mr. Sullivan, for coming to Duxbury High School. A light breeze rustles white blossoms. and plays over cool streams clear. Cold steel like a twisted snake winds about this countryside. and. upon these hard rails glides Time, like a collosal steam engine. Silently pursuing its continous journey it passes unnoticed. A man with a long, flowing beard enjoys: he sleeps. he eats, he wanders in this pleasant haven. And then. sans warning He is a lonely hgure on the cold. hard tracks With Time behind him. What is time. but an invention of man To keep him close to his own existence? If time were no measure, how would man know That his own life is short and inconsequential? Except for those few who transcend their own time And use well the world's tools, forever available. Man is oblivious to the voids of the world And seeks not true existence, but lives in true peace. Andree LeBlanc NVil1 Buechler Andree LeBlanc Her Smile Lovers they had been a while He puzzled by her laughter And her smile. Pouring out his heart, his thoughts To her were known. But though she smiled endlessly, Her feelings never shone. Tell me why you smile so, And what that smile means. ls it because you love me so? Can you hold back the waves of Time's deep sea and forever Be with me? Not a word did she say Not a sound she made. But when he kissed Those smiling lips, A taste of salt there laid. Lisa Mastrogiovanni Will You Remember? Once I was a soldier And fought on foreign sands for you. Once I was a hunter and Brought home fresh meat for you. Once I was a lover and Searched behind your eyes for you. And though you may forget All our rubbish dreams. I ind myself searching through The ashes of our ruins for The time when we smiled and The hours that ran wild with The magic of our eyes and The silence of our world. But soon therell be another To tell you I was just a lie. I End myself wondering. 'Will you ever remember? Iosh Hughes .,, JM 1TT'f x x Y - s W I .1-' , , .Ev-. -4 ' ' I . x'.-- - Fifa Yrs. W6 3 I remember sunsets sitting on my lap And their shadows iingering through my mind. But now I am frozen, I am feeling the blackbirds Silhouetted in the empty trees above me, Where the sunset's grasp reaches out, Bluntly coloring only the high, green tops. Yet I lie knowing That I have given birth to my son, to myself, To he who will roam with the opening buds On the ends of the empty limbs. And so, as I lie, Withered and resigned, There is satisfaction in my soul, Yet having given in. Acceptance was my final role. Libby Creelman Frailty, thy name is man, not woman. Who else is it who must succumb to his desires for sport? And who else is allowed to slack his duties, breeding no dishonor? The world knows that man is an animal. but must he have manners like the base creatures of the darkest earth? Since the very beginning of mankind, the male has been justified in his actions: Well, that's all part of progress, or That's how God made man, While women, who are logical and practical in their emotions, are considered inconsistent and insensible in their actions. A woman is suppressed and is expected to be self restrained. well, have we not affections? desires for sport? and frailty, as men have? Then let them use us well, else let them know: The ills we do, their ills instruct us so. Trish Mastendino And an astronomer said, Master, what of Time? And he answered: You would measure time the measureless and the immeasurable. You would adjust your conduct and even direct the course of your spirit according to hours and seasons. Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing. Yet the timelessness in you is aware of life's timelessness, And knows that yesterday is but as memory and tomorrow is today's dream. Homecoming, 1974 This year's Homecoming uncovered an especially spirited group of students. Activities began with a pep-rally on Friday night, featuring enthusiastic game competitions between the classes. Large numbers appeared to cheer their class on to the title of Most Spirited . This was especially emphasized in the pie- eating contest and the tug-of-war. The class of 1976 won the title. Saturday's activities began with the Homecoming parade. Lead by the D.H.S. band and met with a beautiful fall day, the parade was a success. The class of 1977 came out with the S25 prize with Crush Clippers in the float competition. The game against Norwell was a loss for the Dragons, but was, nevertheless, a well-played game with a lot of spirit. The activities ended with a Homecoming dance, which succeeded in furthuring the school's spirit. The Homecoming Queen, announced at the pep-rally on Friday night was Kelly Byrne. Her court consisted of Pat Sullivan, Beth Marconi, and Cecilia Dirnuzzio. A special thanks to this year's committee: Delores Goodyear, Kathy Grealy, Wendy Pierce, Carla Murphy, and Regina Powers. The team effort and spirit. lead by Co-Captains Holly Pierce and Kathy Burke, produced great enthusiasm. were able to keep the They team together and bring them up in times of depression. An important factor in their winjning streak was the excellent health condition. which enabled them to outlast the other teams they played. This was due to running stairlaps and ten minute runs around the track. The girls did this with reluctance but found it helped in the long run! Despite weather frequently cold and rainy, the girls did show great endurance. Many of the matches were played in drizzle or threatening clouds. Are- you kidding me? Last years track team, under the illustrious coaching of Reggie Clark. was a gas! l mean like. wow! You couldn't get classier! Of course, the juniors. tthis years seniorsl. were the efective stimulus of all this. We had guys like long- legged Pitts on the high jump: Bill Desmond, our 440 man: Marty Earl. jogging the 2-mile: Chris Noon doing all kinds of things - the longjump, the triple jump, the mile. and 880: Willy Buichler. hacking the pole vault: and Richard Aldrich, who walked the 880. Actually Rich, you're all right. Of the sophomores and freshman on the team we have to say something. Some of the prominent ones were: Pat Carroll, our miler: Glen Mitchell. another 2-milerg and Andy Bolster, who shot the shotput, jumped the high jump, and ran the 880. I.ast. but not least. is Coach Clark. He put in lots of work. In fact. he ran every mile with us. even though he couldnt keep up! The season ended with a great victory. and the girls returning are eager to defend their standing for the third year. BOY'S TENNIS Last year the Boys' Tennis Team's record was 8-3. They had a fairly good season, considering that there were a few injuries. Duxbury had an outstanding victory in Cohasset's first loss in several years. ln fact, one of Cohasset's players was so upset that he walked off the court and quit. The team had won the match 3-2. This year's team will consist of Seniors, Scott Rich, Colin Dalhen, Steve Tenny: Iuniors. Bob Hutchinson, Emie Freeberg, Greg Sabracciag Sophomore, Will Hearn: and Freshman, Peter Dewire. r- fs- Q A if 1 SOFTBALL blessing. The spirit of the team, lead by Co-Captains Debbie Canty and Eileen Grealy. brought the Dragons into place with a record of 8- 7. The biggest surprise of the season was freshman pitcher, Gail MaCallum, who had a tremendous season. She was voted the most valuable player by her team mates, and should be a great asset to her team in the coming years. For first time the South Shore League formed a Girls' Softball All-Star Team. Duxbury was represented by two members - third baseman. Kim McCallum and Pitcher, Gail McCallum. With all but two members returning to the team for next year. the girls hope to recapture the South Shore League Championship. GOLF The 1974 D.H.S. golf team, Coached by Bob Hayes and Captained by Senior Rick Kendrew, amassed an undefeated record in league play and finished with an 18-1 overall record. The team's most heralded victory was a 5Vz to 336 win over Tabor Academy, the only team which has given Duxbury difficulty throughout the previous three seasons. In league play Duxbury easily thrashed all rival opponents and won their twelfth straight S.S.L. Title. This placed the team in the state tournament. But the team failed to qualify for the finals. Over the last three years the team has compiled an overall 54-3 record and has gone to the States all three years. This year the Dragons have much more depth than in previous years and should do fairly well in the state toumament. The Dragons will be led by five three-year lettermen: Seniors Brandt Cline, Paul Ayres, Dave Hilliard, Dave Brown. and . Phil Carrigan. Zip.-. '?1?9 ' The 1974 Softball team welcomed a new coach. Miss Patricia Shea. With only two seniors, the team was inexperienced, yet very energetic. One of the most exciting games of the season was played at East Bridgewater. where the teams were forced into extra innings. Although the I Dragons lost. they made a great showing against a league- leading East Bridgewater team. The team combined hard work with the necessary amount of pleasure to create a season filled with victories as well as fun. On one sweltering day in May, Coach Shea consented to a practice on the beach. The punishment for every defensive mistake was a dunking in the ocean, and after the long practice in the hot sun, this was a 7-13-inf is hi-'yi 5: Kn ,y - I ffl' U ' ig D , -liao -. I! 2 BASEBALL Duxbury finished the 1974 season with record 7-7. maintaining their record of no losing season since 1967. The team consisted of an exceptional group of juniors and a capable squad of sophomores. The biggest game of the year was the last, against Hull. Having previously beaten Duxbury, the team had an over confident attitude and left the field with a crushing defeat of 12-2. Duxbury's spirit and sportsmanship may be practically attributed to the devotion and skill of Coach Dave Murphy. However, the devotion of the team throughout the season proved to be an important factor in their successes. as when catcher Scott Wyman broke his tooth. but continued to play in the game. The excellent pitching of Arthur Colvin assured the team of a victory at the Hull game. Coach Murphy was also proud of his squad of sophomores, this year's returning juniors, Todd Desmarais, Ieff Bailey, Steve Andrews, and Tim Barclay. in H if .. ,. SOCCER Duxbury had an exceptional season, moving into position as Eastern Mass. Soccer Champs. Starting the season with one win and four losses, the Dragons came back with determination and 13 consecutive wins. During the regular playing season, Duxbury's rival, Hanover, slipped into the 411 slot in the league standings. Although Hanover was the victor of their first confrontation with Duxbury, in the second they were vanquished. Throughout season, the team had undimishing support of fans. the the the the this time, the name of the notorious Iulio Costellanos Upon entering the Mass. Once again, the Dragons were victorious with a 2-O win for Duxbury's 13th consecutive victory. In the Mass. Champ. final, Duxbury lost to Monument Mountain Reg. High School, but the fans still flocked onto the field, cheering and 1 proud to be Eastern Mass. Champs. It was truly a 1 season coached and played with excellence. l 1 he FOOTBALL The 1974 Varsity Football Team, Coached by Bill Pagnano and Don Dollorca, started the season in a rebuilding trend. But victories over Provincetown and Holbrook seemed to indicate that it would be a victorious year. However, the next six league games met defeat. Morale at practices became low. Nevertheless, the team overcame this low point with the strong leadership of Captains David Barlow and Steve Haskell in the final Thanksgiving victory over Cohassett. Many spectators were frustrated with the performance of the team. Yet, there were some good showings, one of which occured in Middleboro. Duxbury was behind in the score, yet ahead on the field, making this the team's best performance of the year. Contributing to the success of the team were Bruce Lillie and Steven Haskell. both South Shore League All-Stars. The season ended with a final standing of 4-6 in the South Shore League. Duxbury's second best showing in its football history. With only six Seniors leaving and eleven luniors starting the returning season, next year's season looks promising. This year, for the first time there was a lieldhockey Championship for Eastern Mass. Although Duxbury did not qualify to play in the tournament, they did have two members elected to the South Shore League all-star team: Senior Left Half-Back, Karen Brodie and Iunior Left Fullback. Lederle Tenney. Following the tradition of the team, the girls elected a most valuable, player: Senior Half Back Karen Brodie, who will keep the team's mascot-Dragon, Desire until the beginning of next season. CROSS COUNTRY Craig Bloodgood, possibly the most outstanding runner Duxbury Cross Country has ever seen, came to Duxbury this year bringing the promise of victory to the team and a threat to Marty Earl. Bloodgood is truly a great runner, winning all but two races. Due to his tre- mendous success. Tri-Captain Marty Earl remained number two man, running very consistently and continuously, but only breaking his own records. Marty has proved to be a delinite asset to the team's success for the past three years. Late in the sea- son Marty's position was threatened again and again by sophomore Glen Mitchell, a truly dedicated runner. We are all looking forward to Glen's performances in the two mile this spring. Perhaps a running team's best strength lies in its depth. Due to Tri-Captain Richard Aldrich. Chris Noon - both veterans and excellant runners - and also freshman Paul Bloodgood, we were able to count on strong performances behind the lead- ers, who won the places which insured victory when it was in- store. Due to the hard work of Coach Clark and alot of work by the runners, Duxbury man- gaged to finish its most success- ful season with a record of 3-5. FIELD HOCKEY The 1974 field hockey team. unlike last years team. was not a championship team. Although there were many victories throughout the season, they were often not evident in the outcome of the score. After one game. in which the Dragons tied Cohasset, Coach Brooks became so enthusiastic that while literally jumping for joy, she injured her leg, and remained on cruches for the better part of the season. This year's team was young and inexperienced. but under the leadership of Coach Brooks and of Tri- Captains Karen Brodie. Lynda Neubauer. and Lederle Tenney, the younger members acquired the sense of pride and tradition that goes along with being a member of the girls' field hockey team in Duxbury High School. X.. The source of that turkey was junior Craig Bloodgood's victory in Duxbury's First Annual Turkey Trot, a cross country race from the High School to the far end of the Powder Point Bridge and back to the starting point, a distance of four miles. Bloodgood came in first in a field of about 40 runners. The trot was open to anyone with the spirit, or appetite, as the case may have been. It attracted both males and females, Students, Faculty, and townspeople. There were those who had been running daily, and those who stopped working their lawns just long enough to race past some of Duxbury's best late autumn scenery.
