' Duxbury Free Library THE ROAD NDT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveller, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth, Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear Though as for that the passing there I-Iad worn them really about the same And both that mornlng equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black Oh I kept the first for another day' Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back I shall be telling this with a slgh Somewhere ages and ages hence Two roads dlverged IH a wood and I I took the one less travelled by And that has made all the dlfference N-ng. As seniors we stand at the cross roads of life. One last glance backwards and one bold step forward. We lcruve behind fond and faded memories on. pf' 4Df SN .Sx , ' an .1 ,K .M Dedication The class of 1974 wishes to dedicate its year- book to a man with a big heart. He is a teacher in the sense that he taught us to love and respect books. But the title also refers to his role outside of books. He has taught his students one of the most valuable gifts of all, the art of communica- tions, He not only teaches but practices this gift with all he encounters. He has opened many hearts and minds in his famous discussions and will continue to do so. And of course our notori- ous paper, The Key, would have died if it had not been for his help. And so the class of 1974 dedi- cates its yearbook to a man with a big heart, Mr. Tony Chamberlain. e 1 ft- 1 0 fi tl it 3 e J E I ,V it .'s ,tl it 'll i ax 4. ' v if - Q ' .,,- 'W .f fi Q' D .W fag? The theme Color my World, was certainly car- ried by the gay, bright flowers, corsages, and scat- tered decorations about the hall. Sheila johnson was crowned as queen with Dana Marshall and Denise Chapdelaine as her court. The band then played their haunting version of Color my World while the queen, her court, and their es- corts danced. It was a wonderful evening to be cherished along with faded corsages and programs. 62 Queen Shvila johnson and her escort C3 V '22 D 4 I A - it ,fp ,- xg, I - x S 63 Contributed most to the class Mike Pittenger, Ioyce Burdick Most likely to succeed Dana Saywer, Sheila johnson Best personality lim Barrows, Karen Marconi Highway Menace Lisa Blair, Dennis Simmons Most Creative Leanne Bauer, Randy Hoel Best Looking Terry O'Neil, Bruce Ballard Most Athletic I. Al- though Duxhury did not host a foreign student this year, AFS has maintained a great deal of interest within the High School and the town. AFS was very fortunate in seeing Terry O'Neil spend this past summer in Turkey. She enjoyed her stay very much and we know that AFS was a very rewarding experience for Terry. .lf '-,,,,...'-I. 3 ' The ul 1 , Clockwise from top: N. Larson, G. Shomberg, N. Caleskie. I. Caleskie. A five girl line up followed them onto the football field. in the Homecoming and Memorial Day parades and onto competitive perfor- mances. In September the football sea- son looked hard and heavy without the help of an advisor to manage and di- rect them. but the future brightened again when the girls found Mrs. VVil- liam Martin, a former High School Head Majorette. With her help, the ef- forts of Mr. Iohnson and their own hard work, the majorettes had a great season leading the band into field ma- neuvers and twirling flags as well as batons. Progress and accomplishment in all areas this year showed new signs of promise and achievement for an even better future. Perhaps one of the most profound yet basic parts of our lives is the music with which we and other people ofthe world live. When asked about some of his personal views regarding this year's season ol' the hand, Roger Iarvis said: Music adds another dimension to the school-the hand shows that musically and appearance wise it is the most diseiplinedg it covers four very diverse age groups. It teaches how to know and understand. Regarding the importance of music, he said: For the individual, participation ina musi- cal group is one of the most important things for training of tolerance, understand- ing society, and ourselves. If the real mean- ing of the piece can he expressed, one can get a better meaning of it. Understanding is a great word. DHS Band l , , V I A . Mr. Iarvis had this to say: It was like starting over but they're doing one hell of a job. They have a sound like fifty, and there's only twenty of 'em. Were doing nice things and were doing them well. He continued by saying: Our philosophy is not just to have a good performance. but to expose the stu- dents to an understanding of music from all ages. The freshman play, The Spectators, was directed by Ronald Pomroy and took second place. The thirteen stu- dents, all new to the High School stage, exhibited much tal- ent. The best acting awards went to Douglas Bruce and Beth Brodie and also to Iohn Bradford who performed ex- cellently in the role of the moralistic teenager. The girls, under the coaching of Miss Deborah Brooks and the leadership of captains Debby Canty, lane Carrity, Eileen Crealy, and Peggy McGrath, clinched the South Shore League Championship. With eleven seniors returning from last year, the team's outlook appeared to be very bright. Unfortunately, the girls got off to a disappointing start with a record of 2 wins, 2 ties, and 2 losses after the first six games With over half the season remaining, the team de- cided to put their talents together and this proved to be the key factor in the strive for the championship. Going undefeated in their last eight games, the girls achieved their goal. Much credit must be given to the team's great de- fensive line. Outstanding defensive players were goalie, Eileen Crealyg left fullback, lane Carrity: and right halfback, Hilary Hammond, who was voted the team's Most Valuable Player. These three girls were chosen to be mem- bers ofthe All-Star field hockey team. Next year will most likely be a build- ing year for the Dragon ladies, as only five varsity players will be returning. ...- -.. LS.- I Front K. Marconi, I. Delano, P. McGrathy, D. Canty, I. Baseball Last year's baseball team had another successful season under the fine coaching of Dave Murphy. During the regular season Duxbury compiled a 12-4 record, good enough for a second place in the South Shore League and an entry into the Play- offs. Duxbury was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Eastern Mass Baseball Tournament. Mark Battista was the star pitcher of the team and also one of the Co-captains along with third-baseman jimmy Tonrey. Other members ofthe team were Scott Wyman as catcher, Ed Vickers at first base, Steve Andrews at second base, Paul Orricio at shortstop, Renny Cushing in left field. Greg Washburn in centerfield, and lay Whalen in rightfield. Three reserve players that aided Duxbury's Success were Arthur Colvin, Larry Iohnson and Iohn Otsuki. Une of the fine achievements ofthe season was the defense. Statistics proved that the Dragons were the best defensive team in the league, Only five players are lost from last year's team for the upcoming season. I -41 Coach David Murphy 'S 'Q 4 ... G The 1973 girl's softball team. under the coaching of Miss Deborah Brooks. had a good season last spring. The girls had to play each team twice as there were only seven teams in the South Shore League. The team was able to defeat each team at least once with the exception of Hanover. who went unde- feated for the season. Outstanding players for the team were Nancy Merrick. who did a great job pitching: left-fielder Ioyce Burdick: and third baseman jill Cislaghi. who was also the team's relief pitcher. Due to the unfortunate resignation of Coach Brooks. the team will have a new coach this spring and the girls are looking forward to working with her. pq-v .,...wf l y math, . 1.5. - I 21:- 4 Row R orc Fm hug, W. This page sponsored by Barney's A11 Homecoming Homecoming is usually one of the most exciting games during the football season, and it truly was this year. There was a Pep-Rally the night before the game when the queen and her court was chosen. Suzanne Vienneau was our lovely queen with Andre LeBlanc, Pat Sullivan, and Beth Marconi in the equally lovely court. The parade the next morning was a great success with the junior float winning first place. There was a huge crowd to cheer our team on to a great victory over Cohasset, 22-6. I 1 .I I , ,, -.-ws . .
