DR. EVERETT L. HANDY ' C Superintendent of Schools 2 ails MR. HARRY B. McCORMICK Principal To the Members of the Class of I966 :- l will study and get ready and perhaps my chance will come. Of all the things I might say to you, of all the advice I might offer, I could never convey to you as concisely and as lucidly, as do those words of Abraham Lincoln, my sincere desire that you ensure your future by preparing yourself to live and to work in that future. .I.T. Rutherford expressed it somewhat differently-- Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity --but the meaning of both statements is clearly discernible to you. The willing- ness to accept the wisdom of those statements, however, will not be shared by all of you. Believer, or non-believer, I am convinced that two words summarize the key to your future. The words are preparation and adaptability . As science has recorded the extinction of those animals which could not adapt to ci chang- ing environment, modern industry is recording the extinction of those employees who can not adapt to changing skills and methods. No special powers are needed to allow you to forsee the future, you need only use those inborn abilities to think, to listen and to see. lf you use them, you will readily discover the need for preparation, beyond high school, which will enable you to perform a skill or to provide a service which is readily marketable because it cannot be performed by every one else. As you progress through this rapidly-changing, technological society it is imperative that you continue to use these abilities, whether you are in commerce, industry or the professions, for if you fail to adequately prepare yourself for rapid changes and new demands on your ability, your usefulness, like that of the dinosaur, could become extinct. In short, your generation, more than any which has preceded you, must prepare,adapt and prepare again. Be prepared for the luck that will come your way as a result of your preparation and be ready to adapt when opportunity knocks. My sincerest wishes for success in this wonderfully exciting world which you are about to enter are extended to each of you. I am envious of the challenges, the excitement, the knowledge and the rewards that await you. sincerely,
