Uohn Donne, seventeenth centuryl In other words, all people are dependent upon one another. People need people. For this reason, we, the class of I966, have chosen People as the theme of our l966 Partridge. McCORMICK Principal To the Members of the Class of I966 :- l will study and get ready and perhaps my chance will come. Of all the things I might say to you, of all the advice I might offer, I could never convey to you as concisely and as lucidly, as do those words of Abraham Lincoln, my sincere desire that you ensure your future by preparing yourself to live and to work in that future. .I.T. Rutherford expressed it somewhat differently-- Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity --but the meaning of both statements is clearly discernible to you. The willing- ness to accept the wisdom of those statements, however, will not be shared by all of you. Believer, or non-believer, I am convinced that two words summarize the key to your future. The words are preparation and adaptability . As science has recorded the extinction of those animals which could not adapt to ci chang- ing environment, modern industry is recording the extinction of those employees who can not adapt to changing skills and methods. No special powers are needed to allow you to forsee the future, you need only use those inborn abilities to think, to listen and to see. lf you use them, you will readily discover the need for preparation, beyond high school, which will enable you to perform a skill or to provide a service which is readily marketable because it cannot be performed by every one else. As you progress through this rapidly-changing, technological society it is imperative that you continue to use these abilities, whether you are in commerce, industry or the professions, for if you fail to adequately prepare yourself for rapid changes and new demands on your ability, your usefulness, like that of the dinosaur, could become extinct. In short, your generation, more than any which has preceded you, must prepare, adapt and prepare again. Be prepared for the luck that will come your way as a result of your preparation and be ready to adapt when opportunity knocks. My sincerest wishes for success in this wonderfully exciting world which you are about to enter are extended to each of you. I am envious of the challenges, the excitement, the knowledge and the rewards that await you. sincerely, 2 ,H f , As H,- .s.-,..- l l fe v-Q v -1 . Hx . --.x ,Z 1 ,-.3 ... In continuing the idea this year, the Council hopes to make Homecoming a Duxbury tradition. This year's Homecoming took place Novem- ber T9 and 20. After months of preparation, the festivities began on Friday night with a pep rally: coaches gave speeches, Jill Van Weel was crowned queen, and, finally the Norwell team was burned in effigy in a mammoth bonfire. The following day, a colorful Homecoming Parade arrived at the field in time for the kick- off. It was a hard-fought contest, with Norwell emerging victorious. The loss did not dampen Duxbury spirits, however, there was a record attendance at the dance that Saturday night. fSponsored by Bayside Marine Corporationl ?P' f MENTAL PEOPLE . By helping to choose a novel or to find research mater- ial, wonderfully dynamic Mrs. B has come to the rescue innumerable times. Because of the hard work of Mrs. Bencordo and the Library Service Club, we all have enioyed the advantages of an attractive and efficient library in our school. The retirement this year of Mrs. Bencordo means the loss not only of a teacher, but also ofa well-loved friend. nk ACTIVE PEDPLE STIIDE T G0ll GIL 'L I . The high caliber i Qi! E of the entries submitted for consideration rf 1' resulted in a decision to enlarge the size ' of the magazine. To pay the increased printing costs and to serve the students and teachers of Duxbury, Witerature established a small book store. Open four days a week during lunch and staffed by members of the Witerature staff, the store offers a wide variety of paperback books in many subiects. ITERATURE UH. A letter from a German girl named Alida, and Heidi Pape of Duxbury was on her way to Europe. As a participant in the American Field Service program, Heidi is spending this year in Cologne, Germany. Heidi is the first Duxbury student in several years to be selected to be an AFSer, the first person from DHS ever to participate in the year-long pro- gram of the American Field Service. Although the Class of '66 and, indeed, the entire school have missed Heidi very much this year, each of us is proud of our unofficial ambassador to Germany. Who is handsome, intelligent boy with the quick sense of humor and the great ability to make friends? lt's Peter Shakespeare, our exchange student this year from Darwin, Australia. Peter is known for his fine performance on the football field, as well as for his contributions in the class- room. Truly one of the most adaptable exchange students to come to Duxbury, Shakie has become an integral part of our class, our school, and our town.
