We, as seniors, must close the door on one extremely impor- tant phase of life as we enter another. ln later years when we, in wistful reminiscence, look back through the windows of memory to our days at D.H.S. , we will recall innumerable, wonderful, and varied things. Certainly, however, we will rememberone person who always showed concern for the welfare of every one of us. For her infinite acts of kindness, for her noble patience, for the help and encouragement she continues to give to all, we, the Class of I965, ded- icate our yearbook to Mrs. George S. Ferrell. N I -f - I 4 The pointed wit of Leonard Wibberly's brilliant comedy is unveiled in the unusual combination of hiiarity and logic of Take Me Ea Your President, the '65 senior class play. 1 , An ambitious young man residing in the tiny English village of Marsfield or Mars, as it is iknown locally, is convinced that he could bring lasting peace to the world if given the opportu- fnity to have one sensible discussion with world leaders. The uproarious chain of circumstances which leads to this nearly impossible event begins when the British secretly construct a space ship near the remote village of 'lMars. The hero, indignant that his girl friend has no interest in his plan to save the world, enters the rocket, which acciden- tally takes off. He lands on an indian reservation, ana, when asked where he came from, replies Mars. In the startled reaction of his inquisitors he sees his opportunity to fullfill his desire for world peace, and demands, Take me to your president. , ln the large cast of the play were seniors Christopher Canty, Frederick Kemball, Thomas i Jones, James Pye, Donald Burgoyne, Gerald Dexter, Charles Bourget, Harry McCormick, Paul iWales, Robert Barnicoat, Frank Fernandes, Kenneth Gibbons, Gregory Plummer, Gerald Govoni, .Robert Gunnarson, Edward Gibson, Ann Clark, Marilyn Smithson, Lee Haines, Victoria Lawson, Helen Merrick, Georgia Taft, Leslie Butler, Heleni Botassi, Donna Trout, Janet Sawyer, Francis Guilderson, Helen Blanchard, Cheryl Batson, Kathy King, Stephanie Morgan, Jane Wildes, Diane LaFleur, Betty Ann Wadsworth, Lynn Daub, and Lenore McDevitt. The opening of this door to education also provided scope for many other activities for this multi-talented class of l965. ln Kindergarten, along with finger painting and clay modeling, we were introduced to the learning proc- ess with reading readiness fundamentals. One not-so-eager student, James Pye, decided that there was no place like home, and tried to defect. Jamie was speedily apprehended, however, with no dire consequences . . . . The highlight of the year was a short skit depicting important holidays. For the Thanksgiving scenes, Susan Rich and James Howard dressed as Pilgrims, with Richard Proctor and Mike Drummey as Indians - com- plete with tom-toms. Other stars were Anthony LaGreca as Santa Claus, and teacher Marilyn Smithson. It was a long step up from the half-days of kindergarten to the full day routine of grade. Little Peggy Vinal decided that she didn't like the transition and headed for home, only to be intercepted half-way there by Principal Donald Delong. . . .Mastering the reading skills, we moved on. Second grade was a special year for us, as we moved to the new wing of the elementary school. The new facilities seemed to make learning easier, or at least more fun. ln third grade a rivalry between Mrs. Chase's class and Mrs. Loring's precipitated a hard-fought spelling bee .... Mrs. Loring's class presented a play entitled The Blue and the Gray with Eleanor Merry singing There's a Long, Long Trail A-Winding. Special memories of the fourth grade include a trip to the Pilgrim Museum in Plymouth, and Kool-aid parties in the girls' room. Musically-inclined students Jane Wildes, Ann Clark, Diane LaFleur and Donna Trout tackled such instruments as the flute, clarinet, and drums. Mr. Jarvis' musical prodigies joined the Elementary School band in fifth grade and performed in the an- nual P.T.A. band concert. Under the direction of Mrs. Jarvis an elememiry school chorus was also initiated and made its debut in a special Christmas concert .... A co-ed soccer contest held during recess throughout the year must also be recorded as one of our fond memories. A Junior Tournament of Plays was held in sixth grade, with three plays in competition. Mr. Queeny's room took top honors with its production of TEEN the Old Clock. The stars were Gail Cutler, Tom Jones, Marilyn Smithson, and Randi Stott .... Two field trips, both led by Mr. Queeny, were taken: the first to the Peabody Museum at Harvard, the second to Duxbury Beach for a combination picnic-research pro- ject. . .Members of the class again participated in a Christmas concert. Now with a solid elementary school background we took the big step to junior high. Seventh W brought many changes and new experiences. We began this year under a new principal, Mr Harry B. McCormick, who has become both friend and advisor within and beyond the doors of DHS. Fond mem ories of the seventh grade include the choir show fremember Donna Trout, Peggy Vinal, Leslie Butler, Bob Barnicoat, Don Burgoyne, Vicki Lawson, and Eleanor Merry singing Getting To Know You, and l Won't Grow Up ?i, junior band concerts, the junior cheerleaders, the field trip to Woods Hole with Mr. Reed Stewart, and the Science Fair with Pat Merlet taking top honors for her project on textiles. fSponsored by Louis' Barber Shop and Toabe Hardware Storesi Eighth W brought more acclaim for the Class of '65 as Paul Wales took first prize in the iunior speech contest with his dramatic monologue, and won the iunior spelling bee. Peggy Vinal received second prize. . . Eighth grade was highlighted by a field trip to the Ocean Spray Cranberry Company icomplete with free sam- plesi, the Science Fair, and finally Bermuda Day, with everyone busily carrying books to the new school. mtl-h we was a memorable year as we began our high school career in the well-equipped new building. Class officers were elected: Ken Gibbons, president, Brad Howard, vice president, Peggy Vinal, secretary, and Donna Trout, treasurer. . .Excitement was at a high point as Duxbury reached the finals in the Tech Tourney and the whole school went to Boston Garden to cheer the team on. . .Helen Merrick received first prize at the Sci- ence Fair that year with her photographs of hydras. .Another precedent was set as many ninth-grade boys began football under the direction of Coach James Kelley. The boys made a formidable record in their first season of interscholastic encounters on the iunior varsity level. Q . Y '. H . - I l ', f L 'J 1. . Nil' . I 1 - V A 1- 4 'il 2 'T 'i il it Tenth grade was a year that featured dramotics, with our entry in the Tournament of Plays, The Ghost Story, directed by Mr. Dunn, with Bob Barnicoat and Vicki Lawson in the lead roles. Also, Mr. Jenness' English class put on a one-act play, The Courting of Marie Jenvrin, in a book week assembly. Paul Wales, Vicki Lawson, Marilyn Smithson, and Jerry Dexter turned in stellar performances.. .Sophomore class officers were Harry McCormick, president, Bob Barnicoat, vice president, Peggy Vinal, secretary, and Georgia Taft, treasurer. Junior year brought the headaches of college boards and a hectic round of activities for everyone. . .Harry McComckEain headed the class, assisted by vice president Jim Pye. The class presented an excerpt from Shakespeare's As You Like It, directed by Mrs. Sherwood, forthe Tournament of Plays. Tom Jones, Georgia Taft, and Chris Canty were cast in leading roles, and Reuben Fife turned in a creditable performance as back- stage manager. Linda Olhson and her committee worked many long hours making the Elizabethan costumes for the production. . .Paul Wales received a letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests, and was chosen as honor marshal for graduation. Among honor ushers were Sylvia Fernandes, Cheryl Batson, and Lorraine Reed. . .Our iunior prom, with Paul Wales as chairman, featured Springtime in Paris as its theme, with the gym transformed into a Parisian street scene. Georgia Taft was prom queen with Janet Sawyer and Linda Adams as her attendants. Mr. McCormick announced that Frank Fernandes had been elected Student Council President, and Kathy King, vice president. . .Yearbook heads were chosen with Tom Jones as editor-in-chief. . . Harry McCormick and James Pye were selected as delegates to Boys' State, and Georgia Taft attended Girls' State. . .Peggy Vinal won the American Legion essay contest. . .The choir show that year, Music lO, was a review of the past ten shows. Eleanor Merry sang a solo, Summertime. . . .Georgia Taft was chosen to participate in the American Legion Pre-College Program in Paris that summer, T964. Our senior year began with all the drama and enthusiasm that a first year of varsity football should have. The team compiga proud record and boasted the upset of the season by downing Hanover 20 to I5. As a fit- ting finale to this first varsity season, the Student Council began the homecoming tradition with a bonfire, pa- rade, game, and reunion. The weekend was made a complete success by our defeat of West Bridgewater, 8 to O. Our star end Harry McCormick and aggressive fullback Brad Howard received All-Star Honors. Perhaps the most enthusiastic of all the spectators was our exchange student Heleni Daphne Botassi, from Athens, Greece. . . All were saddened at the Christmas assembly when it was announced that Mrs. Philip Lynch would not return after the vacation. Room fourteen will never be the same .... Participating in the District Chorus were Lenore McDevitt, Eleanor Merry, and Tom Jones, who also participated in the All-State Chorus. . .Mrs. Sherwood accompanied our English Honors Class to Stratford, Connecticut, for the production of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. . . .With spring came the senior play production of the three-act comedy Take Me to Your Pres- ident, directed by Mr. Dunn .... This year's choir show, Get Up and Go, was a musical Zzafnedy it-firm:-cf SFaFing seniors were Tom Jones, Lenore McDevitt, ChaFlKB5rQEn Burgoyne, Vicki Lawson, and Chris Canty .... On June ll we finally realized our goal of thirteen years as we received our diplomas. Graduation closed the doors of one phase of education behind us, and opened the door to life. HELENI gf., ax E. EAAA2 The opening in the door to internation- al friendship and understanding has been considerably widened this year by our visi- tor from Greece, Heleni Daphni Botassi. Heleni,an A.F.S. student Athens, has brought with her all the of her mild climate. Her all-too-brief stay in Duxbury has left us with many pleasant memories. Her winning smile, laughing blue eyes, and cheerful nature have endeared her to all who know her. We will never forget: Heleni's giggle disrupting French class, her enthusiastic cheering for all our ath- letic teams, her skill in avoiding gym class, her inquiring What happens'? , or her de- votion to that all-American institution - television. These are but little recollec- tions, perhaps, but they add up to a long- lasting, happy memory of a girl named Heleni, a girl we will not soon forget. Heleni personifies the goals and ideals ofthe American Field Service, she has been a welcome asset to our community, our school, and our class. 7. . .--V1-:gi f. 1 .1 .fs 'F .1 i Y!!-r I H Row:B.
