Captain V. C. Bono, U. S.N. , came to the USS Duxbury Bay from the attack
cargo ship QAKAQ Miliphen where he served as Executive Officer. He assumed com-
mand on 16 April 1965 at Norfolk, Virginia.
Captain Bono, a graduate of The George Washington University, was commissioned
from Rice Institute as a member of the first NROTC class from Rice. Since his com-
missioning he has had duty in many ships, the USS Knox and USS Evans in the destroyer
fleet, and the Pocono and Boxer inthe Amphibious Forces, are some of his former duty
While stationed at Fort Monroe he completed Army Airborne training and qualified
as a parachutist at Fort Benning.
His postgraduate schooling was in naval intelligence at Fort Bragg. Captain Bono is
one of the few naval officers who is fluent in the Arabic language. I-le also has had
previous Middle East duty as Senior Assistant Naval Attache in Cairo, Egypt
I-Ie was promoted to Captain on 1 February 1966 and was picked to attend the
Defense System Analysis Institute at Arlington, Virginia.

Commissioned: 31 December 1944
On the 18th of June 1966, the DUXBURY BAY departed Norfolk,
Virginia, for Bahrain Island on.what was to be her final Middle East
cruise, A the final cruise of her career. The first of May 1966 saw her
colors lowered as the last stage of deactivation.
Her history has been colorful and varied, the seas she has sailed
are many, and she served her country and her Navy proudly.
The crew of the "Galloping Ghost of the Arabian Coast" has dis-
persed and are now serving on other ships of the Navy.
But they'll tell tales of their adventures on the DUXBURY BAY
. , and the ship will stay alice in many a sea story.
