COMMANDER MIDDLE EAST FORCE R ADM. J. H. MAURER Rear Admiral J. H. Maurer, Commander Middle East Force, is a H highly decorated submariner. A holder of the Navy Cross and two Silver i Star Medals won for heroism in submarines duringthe war, RADM. I Maurer, a Naval Academy graduate, came to the Middle East Force from I - duty on OPNAV, Washington, D. C. as Director of Naval Warfare Analyses. ' ' I-Iis selection for the rank of Rear Admiral was approved by the Presi- dent on 14 july 1961. A U RADM. Maurer, who was COMIDEASTFOR during Duxbury Bay's entire deployment in the Middle East, departs in April to assume the duties of Cammander Submarine Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet. CHIEF OF STAFF Captain Pleasant L. Murphy, a naval aviator, who is qualified for command in destroyers sand submarines, reported as Chief of Staff, Commander Middle East Forces, in September 1965. He reported from duty as Commanding Gfficer of USS Yellowstone, a destroyer tender homeported in jacksonville, Florida. 19
