PUSTLUDE The cruise is finished and though all good things must have an end, there still re- mains the memories and impressions that have been born out of sincerity and hard work. Often we did not sense the mark we left on the world for as Americans we live within ourselves, smugly and securely, but our experiences in today'sworld are erasing our self-centered attitudes and the Democracy we once hoarded is becoming like the sea itself - stretching its arms to all the world. Each sailor has left some part of America in the lands he has visited and though the mark he has made has not yet be- come physically manifest, he has left an ideal with the peoples of lesser progressive countries. The coconut vender in Colombo, the aggressive gem salesman in Bahrein, the taxi driver in Rome and the orphan of Lisbon shall not easily forget the attitudes and generosities of the American sailor. Many a man asked just what his purpose had been on this mission. . . The answer quite simple. He was there to accomplish nothing but to be a good American and worthy of his uniform and the flag he stood under. It won't be the same crew next year but the family that we all were shall never be forgotten by the men of the DUX BAY.
