Burrell As editor of The Widget, it is my privilege and pleasure to write this dedication. Working on the annual these past months has brought my staff and me into close contact with many of our administrators and faculty members. Consequently, we have reached the sincere conclusion that Mr. Cloice Burrell is a most worthy man for the dedication of this book. This is being written as my own personal opinion, but it could be the feelings of any student who has had any association with Mr. Burrell. On many occasions I have entered his office with various problems. Without fail, he would lay aside whatever he was doing at the time, and offer his help in the solution of these problems. I have never found him unwilling to assist anyone, with every means within his power. In conclusion, I encourage those of you who do not know Mr. Burrell, to make an effort to do so. I am sure you will find him a helpful friend, just as I have. William B. Whorton Editor 4 ADMINISTRATION 5 Board of Trustees Robert L. Lyon, Chairman Ernest G. Andrews 6 George W. Newton Edward L. I OPEN LETTER TO THE STUDENT BODY The Student Government of 1966-67 almost wasn't. It appeared, for a time, that the government which was started in the 1965-66 school year would not survive. If it had not been for the persistance and cooperation of the staff and faculty of Durham Technical Institute, especially Mr. Kyle Jones, the Student Government would have died a silent death. Under the direction of Mr. Jones, each department was asked to select a representative for the Student Government. Since the original government had been dissolved before the end of the 1965-66 school year, this year's government started from scratch. By the selection of representatives from each department the nucleus of the government was formed. The new government started with the by-laws of the past government. We were all in agreement that they were excellent and that no major changes were needed. Under these laws the government very reluctantly selected a slate of officers for the 1966-67 school year. Our purpose or aim was not to comer the government for ourselves. It seemed to be the best means for getting the government functioning again as soon as possible. Your government's hope is that we did not violate your trust by doing so. The government's accomplishments were not as many as we would have liked. We did, however, make some advancements; the most important of which was to establish a channel of communication between the students and the faculty and staff, Unfortunately, this channel was not utilized to its fullest, but at least it is a start. Also, the school, through the Student Government, did establish a sports program which will function through the Durham Recreation Department. At this writing, your government is in the process of initiating a school newspaper. We hope to be in publication by the spring quarter. The school is experiencing growing pains as everyone can see. Many of the goals that the government would have liked to accomplish this year can better be done in the future due to the acquisition of more space, which will be incorporated in the new building for such purposes. Elections for the 1967-68 school year will soon be forth coming. Your government urges you to give careful thought and consideration to the candidates who will be running for office, for it is through these officers that the government must function. It is this government's hope and plea that you as future students will insist on a solid student government. It is your government and only you can make it work. 45 Richard T.
