For this is the first year that we have had a Student Government to function an entire year, and we're very proud of it. It all started last September, when a few students were in the lounge talking and drinking a coke. We decided that this school needed a Student Government to speak for the students, and we were going to see if we could start one. We didn't realize at first how much time and hard work goes into starting a Student Government from scratch, but to us it was worth it, and we hope it will be worth it to the students in the future. We can't say we accomplished as much as we intended or wanted to this year, but at least now the ball is rolling for the future. We do hope the future students of Durham Technical Institute will take advantage of this great op- portunity and make the best of it. The officers of the Student Government want to thank Mr. Collins, Mr. Otte (who is no longer with us), Mr. Jones, and Charlie McPherson for using their valuable time to show us what to do and how to get started. We know we couldn't have done it without them. Also, we want to leave a message for the future students of DTI. Please don't let all our hard work go down the drain! This Student Government helped us, and we know it will help you if you work and keep it going. So don't let us down! Lynn Bridges, Editor Co-Editor 2 Roger Parker - Co-Editor 3 31 Carol Johnson, Co-Editor 1 Joyce Harris, WORDS OF THANKS The 1965-66 edition of the Omnibus is before you. The staff has worked patiently and diligently with the hope of producing a publication worthy of our school. If you feel we have fallen short, we remind you of the difficulty of equaling or surpassing the record already established. For whatever virtues this book may contain, we wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Jones and untiring friends, whose devotion has made this manuscript possible. To Mr. Collins, President of Durham Technical Institute, our never failing friend; To Allen Barbee who has so efficiently published our manuscript; And last, but far from least, to the students of Durham Technical Institute which has concurred in every particular and by their whole-hearted support, made the Omnibus a worthy endeavor. The Staff 32 cttU OU 1 HOLD fast your dreams! Within your heart Keep one, still, secret spot Where dreams may go, And sheltered so, May thrive and grow— Where doubt and fear are not. O, keep a place apart, Within your heart, For little dreams to go! Think still of lovely things that are not true. Let wish and magic work at will in you. Be sometimes blind to sorrow. Make believe! Forget the calm that lies In disillusioned eyes. Though we all know that we must die, Yet you and I May walk like gods and be Even now at home in immortality! We see so many ugly things- Deceits and wrongs and quarrelings; We know, alas! We know How quickly fade The color in the west, The bloom upon the flower, The bloom upon the breast And youth’s blind hour. Yet, keep within your heart A place apart Where little dreams may go May thrive and grow. HOLD fast-hold fast your dreams! 33 4966 (Dfiew yflauAe Left to right: Mr. Bland, Dr. Dykstra. 34 A few candid shots taken at our spring Open House. 35 Stanley Goldberg Clara Leake Jimmy Campell Pat King £Be(U Piaefieb Rosa Hayes David Smith Harriette Craig Scott Gesell Pecolia Beatty JUU Fred Sherron Joyce Harris Gaines Robertson Pecolia Mayo Clifton Hobgood Judy McGhee nmtioifA Bill Whorton Carol Johnson Stead k c c€laM' Nick Hobeika Nancy Stinson 36 I came late, so I am leaving early to make up for it! 37 38 THERE'S ONE THING I KNOW (But I can't think of it right now)................................................Francis Allen I'M NOT FAT (I'm just short for my width)......................................................Pecolia Beatty KNOWLEDGE IS POWER (particularly if you know the right things about the right people).................Lynn Bridges WORKING FOR A LIVING ISN'T BAD (It's intolerable).................................................................Mr. Burgin THEY SAID IT COULDN'T BE DONE (But how did they know?)...........................................................Mr. DeBruyne GIVE ME THE FACTS STRAIGHT (I'll take care of mixing them up).................................................Harriette Craig IT PAYS TO LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS (Even if you have to borrow money to do it)........................................Stanley Goldberg HELP A MAN IN TROUBLE AND HE'LL NEVER FORGET YOU (Especially the next time he's in trouble).........................................Mr. Goss EVERYONE SHOULD PAY THEIR TAXES WITH A SMILE (I tried it, but they insisted on cash)............................................Joyce Harris I NEVER MADE A MISTAKE IN MY LIFE (I thought I did once but I was wrong).............................................Mr. Jernigan THE LAST THING I WANT IS MONEY (Also the first)...................................................................Carol Johnson COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT (Mention anything we'll be glad to complain about it...............................Donna Johnson I'M A SELF-MADE MAN (And I worship my creator).........................................................Mr. Kemper I ONLY ASK ONE SMALL THING IN LIFE (My own way).......................................................................Charlie McPherson I HAVE AN OPEN MIND (Everything passes through it).....................................................Alvin Mosley AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY (An onion a day keeps everyone away)...............................................Roger Parker I CAME IN LATE TODAY (So I'll leave early to make up for it)............................................Fred Sherron OUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICE HAVE NEVER BEEN EQUALLED (Surpassed, Yes, but never equalled)...............................................Mrs. Scoggins I EXPLAIN THINGS ONLY ONCE (I never repeat myself myself).....................................................Mr. Umstead IN THIS ORGANIGATION IT'S SMART TO BE DIFFERENT (and different to be smart)........................................................Ray Wilkins 39 MASCOT: Gamecock HONORARY MASCOT: The little mouse behind the water fountain beside Room 7 40 COLORS: Colonial Blue and Old Gold I'm the DTI Gamecock And they couldn't make a better pick But Oh Boy did my selection Make some people kind of sick Having me as their mascot Is like money in the bank With a Gamecock on your side You don't need a tiger in your tank Now tigers belong in jungles In zoos or maybe in S.C. But not up here in the civilized world With good folks like you and me I can strut prouder and crow louder Than any old tiger can So if you want a winning mascot Pick a Gamecock! A Gamecock! Yea Man! My cousin who's a mascot In one of our neighboring states Will tell you just as I have That those tigers just don't rate So if you want a great mascot Come to DTI and see A mighty fine example A ferocious tiger-eating Gamecock. ME! Speight 41 SWfc Jvlcm, 0 0 First Quarter Dear Mom: I arrived here from Raleigh where I caught a ride with the Mayor of Durham. He has a lovely mule. He even has his tail curled—the mule. After I got me a room, I went to the school where I’ll be going-DTI Mom, it's a beautiful school. It didn't surprise me much that they were inside, but one for boys and one for girls! And they don't even run over like the one at the county seat. . . Second Quarter Dear Mom: I thought I'd write to let you know that DTI is really great. We get five minute breaks after each class and we have more fun chasing roaches under our teachers desk. They get in all the drawers-(desk drawers) that is. I hate to go, but the teacher just asked me what Lyndon B. Johnson did. I didn't even know he went to school here. Third Quarter Dear Mom: Well, another quarter is beginning much the same as last quarter. We registered and I got my identification card, (with my name misspelled again) and a new library card, with no numbers. Aside from that, everybody is real excited about what will happen next week. Our school's tournament of intramural horse shoes begins. I hope I win. End of Third Quarter Dear Mom: School is almost out. Everybody's up at Top's cramming for exams. This quarter I only have two exams scheduled for the same period instead of three like before. I also got to act as a marshal at the graduation. Boy, was that exciting! There was a lady there and I didn't think she had any teeth, but I was wrong, the boys in Dental made them for her and the reas;on I didn't see them was because she was so busy showing them to everybody. Mom, I hope you won't be too disappointed, but I will be going on a beach trip with the rest of the fellows as soon as schools over and won't be home for awhile. We're going to a resort, I think Bill called it ENO BEACH! Yours loving son, Elm or 42 43 WELL-WHECH? Mrs. Hodges began a conversation with me on motoring. ’’Have you purchased your new car this season?” I asked. nNo, Mr. Riddle, not yet, she said. nI can't make up my mind just which make of car to buy. Maybe you will help me. What is it that you can not decide about them? Mr. Riddle asked. Why, I can't decide whether I should get a gasoline car or a limousine car. Tell me, does limousine smell as bad as gasoline? LITTLE MISS PRACTICAL NURSE Mrs. Anderson was examing her nursing class in physiology. Mary, you tell us, she asked, what is the function of the stomach? The function of the stomach, the girl a answered, is to hold up the petticoat. HIS MONEY'S WORTH They had just become engaged. What a joy it will be, Joyce exclaimed, for me to share all your griefs and sorrows. But darling, A.L. protested, I have none. No, Joyce answered, but when we are married you will have. BLESS HIS HEART! Alvin overhead his parents talking about Bible names. Is my name in the Bible? Alvin asked. No. dear. Why, didn't God make me? Yes, dear. Then why didn't He say something about it? SCHOOL Well, LarryG, said his mother, did you learn anything new at school today? Yes'm, said Larry G. What did you learn new? I got on to a new way of getting out o' school fer an hour, by snuff in red ink up me nose. EDUCATION The President of a school recently engaged a new man and gave instructions to one of his assistants to instruct him in his duties. A few days later the President inquired whether the new man was progressing with his work. The assistant, who had not agreed very well with the man in question, angrily exclaimed: Progressing! There's been a lot of progress. I have taught him everything I know and he still doesn't know how to take over. ALGERNON'S MATH I am delighted to meet you, said the father of a college student shaking hands warmly with Professor William. My son took math from you last quarter, you know. Pardon me, said Professor William, he was exposed to it, but he did not take it. WELL EARNED I often wish I had the nerve of my friend Jerry. The other night at a Christmas party he deliberately walked up to the prettiest girl in the room and kissed her. How dare you? she cried, blushing furiously. I am not under the mistle- toe. That's all right, responded Jerry. A girl with a face like yours doesn't need any mistletoe. and then he kissed her again. 44 45 Some people are still willing to do an honest days work Our modern cafeteria, only they want a weeks pay for it. ■ :W'- ... , ; Of course our future secretaries are ladies! What gives you the idea they’re not? If you must know, our eyesight isn’t bad, we’re ignoring you. Would you believe I won first prize for taking pic- tures? How about second? Honorary mention. ! 46 There's no place like home! You'll go Thundering down in history, like an extra gallon of water down Niagra Falls. Doctor! He has no heartbeat! I wonder what could be the matter. In case of an emergency, act natural—PANIC! You have Hidden Talent and I hope someday, that someone can find it! 47 On coffee break, but will be back in time for lunch. No, he didn’t see something funny, he just stepped on our pet roach. That’s what we like to see around here, a nice in- terested class. You have a perfect right to express your opinion here, so long as it agrees with mine. 48 We would like to announce that the funeral for Elmer and Sidney, our pet roaches will be held today at 3 o’clock. Report all Obscene Material to the Post Office De- partment, they’re building up a terrific new Library. SUMMIT CONFERENCE! 49
