The program started with the Black Man in Africa and his forced migration to America, followed by Iris enslavement. This portion of the history was dramatized in dance. Recon¬ struction followed. Then came the early twentieth century with a black cultural awakening. The Civil Rights Movement of the fifties and the early sixties preceded the Black Revolution of today. Intermittently the black chorus sang songs which were mindful of each era. Truly, this was a highlight of the entire year. Overweight and out of condition, they practiced with a spirit of forty-eight men devoted to the game and to themselves. Throughout a year highlighted by injuries and defeats this feeling never left them. After dropping the opener to Burlington 7-0 in a game that was impressive from a defensive standpoint only, the Bulldogs came against the Greensboro Grimsley team in the rain at the County Stadium. DHS never let up but was deprived of a tie by a hotly contested judgement call, enabling Greensboro to kick the winning field goal with, apparently, no time left on the score board clock. Mike Searcy scored for the Bulldogs with a one yard plunge in the 9-6 contest. In the first game ever played between the city’s two senior highs, Durham won a well deserved victory over Hillside 20-0. The DHS offensive line was never better as they collapsed the Hornets defense again and again for the Bulldogs first confer¬ ence win. Against unbeaten Wilson Fike the next week, the Bulldogs lost miserably by a score of 35-0 as the Cyclones simply outplayed them in every area. Homecoming against Sanderson saw three new faces in the DHS backfield. In the Bulldog lineup for defensive halfbacks David Ennis and Tommy Hayes and safety Kit Podger who were injured in the Wilson game were Johnny Garrett, Ken Cherry, and Willie Mebane. A fumble in the end zone cost DHS one touch down. After threatening several times the team failed to score and lost 7-0 when the Sanderson quarterback scored on a one yard sweep around end. Durham standout’s were Moore, who ran the opening kickoff of the second half back for eighty yards and a touchdown, and Stewart Young who kicked three extra points. After losing Mebane during practice because of a knee injury, Dur¬ ham triumphed over Raleigh Ligon 13-0 in a game marred by a fight in the closing minutes which resulted in Keith Acrey sustaining a concus¬ sion which hampered him for the rest of the year. Bruce Elliott and Mike Moore scored for the Bulldogs and Johnny Garrett exhibited excellent defense by intercepting three passes. One of the finest games the Bulldogs played all season was against Rocky-Mount. The two teams were evenly matched offensively and defensively but a penalty nullified the Bulldogs only touchdown result¬ ing in a scoreless tie. The team showed what it really had the next week by holding Raleigh Enloe, the number one team in the third division, to two touchdowns. Marvin Carver riddled the Raleigh defense scoring twice, once for a touchdown and for the two point conversion. The DHS effort was not enough as Enloe took the game 14-8. Closing the season against Raleigh Broughton the Bulldogs put forth a valiant effort but saw it fall short by just two points. The 1969 season cannot be described merely by the scores. The poor won-lost record belies the fact that the team played much better than appearances warrant. Game after game the Bulldogs took the field prepared to play the best football possible. They may have been outscored but they delivered superb defensive performances and never lost the desire to win. The next match against Grimsley proved tougher, ending in a 22-22 tie. The Bulldogs came back, however, to win over Eastern Alamance 29-21. After slipping by Bur¬ lington 22-21, the grapplers swamped Hillside 49-5 in the first meeting between the DHS team and the newly organized Hornet grapplers. Riding the momentum of this last win, the Bull¬ dogs took Wilson 34-13 but could not manage a win over Sanderson, the match ending in a tie 26-26. Fayetteville proved just as tough, and the Bulldogs tied again 24-24. Against Rocky Mount the DHS grapplers completely overwhelmed the inexperienced Gryphons 55-5 and Raleigh Enloe faired little better, losing 26-22. The only loss of the season came at the hands of a superior Raleigh Broughton club 27-7. This year’s team produced several excellent wrestlers. Lenox Smith went undefeated with a regular season score of 6-0. Marvin Carver was also undefeated in 10 matches, but tied one for a score of 9-0-1. David and John Katzenmeyer both won 10 matches and lost 1 for a score of 10 and 1 each. Steve Evans won 9, lost 1, and tied 1. Jerry Rogerson won 9 and lost 2, and Mike Soles won 8 and lost 3. The Division 3, 4-A Tour proved as successful as the regular season for our wrestlers. John Katzenmeyer, Steve Evans, Marvin Carver, Jerry Rogerson, and Mike Soles went undefeated, winning both of their matches. David Katzen¬ meyer split his, winning one and losing one. The 1969-70 season proved again the quality of DHS wrestling and the ability of Coach Sam Arbes. Marvin Carver John Katzenmeyer HftSTUHk Steve Evans DIVISION III CHAMPIONS Jerry Rogerson 144 Athletics Athletics 145 Tim Harward GOLF The outcome of the Golf team was really in doubt because of the loss of all but one member of last year’s team via graduation. Tim Harwood was the only one that returned for the 1970 golf season, but he was supported by Senior Mickey Bailey and Junior Steve Riley. 146 Athletics Gary Bressler David McLeod TENNIS Durham High School was expected to be very much in the running for the District Title. They were supported with five experienced lettermen from last year’s squad. Gary Bressler, David McLeod, A. G. Crockett, and Matt Spach headed the list while Junior Dickie Chaiken was also returning. Most powerful opponents for the team were Burlington, Wilmington, Raleigh, Broughton, and Durham Hillside. Athletics 147 TRACK L. E. Boykin Nigel Barnes Immanuel Paschall Cross Country: James Sanders, Jay Pittard, Gary McCall Coach Brown Under the coaching of Mike Brown the Durham High School tracksters were determined to build a fine program for Durham High Track enthusiasts. Gary McCall and L. E. Boykin, Ron¬ ald Fields and Kim Coman returned to help the Bulldogs on the track, while Bill Amey and Robert Watson returned to help out in the field events. The team competed against Raleigh teams, Hillside, and other non-conference events. The Annual Durham Track day was held, in which D. H. S. took an active part. Athletics 149 Jerry Alford, Johnny Garrett BASEBALL The sluggers of Durham High School be¬ gan preparations for their tough schedule in early March. Coach James Speight, in his second season as baseball coach at Durham High, was very optimistic about the outcome of Iris team. Seniors Mike Moore, Bill Rand, Vic Witt, Craig Pipkin, Bruce Elliott were powerful returnees for the ’70 season. 150 Athletics Ronnie Bryant, Jerry Alford Coach Speight Johnny Garrett John Marlowe Tom Caldwell Athletics 151 DHS IN ACTION Track and Basketball: Brown COACHES .. , _ . .
