CLASS GF '65 THE CLASS HISTORY Class of '65 As the day approaches when we don our caps and gowns, we Seniors, the Class of '65, look back on our last year at DHS with mixed feel- ings. We look through expectant and optimis- tic eyes to the future as the fruit of our high school years. But we also linger on the mem- ories of events and accomplishments that have become part of the past. The first big event of the year, which we will remember with pride, is the Budget Drive. Although we did not win the prize by being first to reach our goal, we kept giving until we had given well over lOO per cent. Next came the Fall Festival, our Homecom- ing week. The Fall Festival sponsored by the Class of '65, was the most spirited Festival ever held at Durham High. Beginning with Senior Day, the spirit grew higher each succeeding day as we chased, caught, and finally cooked the Blackbirds of Rocky Mount. During our ban- quet Thursday night, a huge Blackbird was burned in a bonfire. The Homecoming Parade on Friday afternoon with its band, cheerleaders and lovely girls on convertibles, was a very col- orful affair. During half-time at the game, one of our Senior representatives, Caroline New- som, was crowned Homecoming Queen. ln the State finals playoff our senior boys on the football team really lived up to their super- iority. Thank you for advancing so farl The basketball team also deserves a thank you for its outstanding season. Not only during Fall Festival week, but also during the entire year, the school spirit made our senior year a memorable one. One of the main factors contributing to this was the efforts of our dedicated seniors on the Student Coun- cil. They came to their jobs with a fresh out- look and made the year i964-65 lively and ex- citing. Few of us will soon forget our last concen- trated effort as a class-the Senior Play. Ac- cording to our lively spirits, we presented a comedy, The Teahouse of the August Moon. The six weeks of preparation were hectic in- deed, with set-building, rehearsals, bills to pay, tickets, more rehearsals, more bills, costumes, make-up, more rehearsals, and the last min- ute rush of course. But each of us will readily agree that the result was worth every bit of those frantic weeks. Another memory we have is of the Junior- Senior Prom presented in our honor by the Jun- iors. fOf course, we will not say that it was as good as the one we have for the Seniors the year before.l lt was a lovely dance but it clearly reminded us of the nearing end of our high school years. These are some of the things we remember as we await our graduation from DHS. For these things and for the other memories of our Sen- ior year, we would like to thank our Senior class officers and our adivsors, Mrs. Penny and Mrs. Ridenhour, for their help and guidance. ,
