I Homework, tests, games, dances, girls, boys, clubs, assemblies, teachers, books, classrooms, desks . . . each of these and a great deal more make up our world at D.H.S. With pictures and words, the Mes- senger staff has strived to FOCUS upon t Durham High School. Each student different concept of his high school s, and through the 1964 Messenger, we nope that these years will be preserved and cherished for many years to come. Published by SENIOR CLASS DURHAM HIGH SCHOOL Durham, N. C. Editors : Martha Parks Carol Thom as Little Bo-Peep has lost her sheep ... We all remember these words from the Junior Talent Show of 1962, said by a man dear to each of us even before then. He came to us in the fall of 1961, bringing with him an atmosphere of informality and trust. Since then, the students at Durham High have learned to love and respect him. It is not at all unusual to see him rushing down the hall, hands full of papers, smil- ing and saying Hi to everyone he meets. At all games and school functions, there he is — cheering our team on to victory or dancing with a Senior girl all in pink and lace. His good humor and outgoing personality have gained many a smile and feeling of gratitude from both students and faculty. Still, in the face of problems, he is quick to act. By presenting directly to the students problems concerning their behavior or policy, he has shown his trust and has made the students feel a larger part of the school system. His busy schedule in school and community affairs never seems to hinder him from giving time for personal consultation. For his understanding and cheerful example to each of us, we, the Class of ' 64, dedicate the Messenger to Dr. Daniel F. Cagle, Princi- pal of Durham High School. Forward We Move to Focus on Durham High . . . Our faculty has done much to make our school one for the students. Besides their teaching duties, they have spent much time and effort to help the students be- come more aware of their places as citi- zens of tomorrrow. Moving down the halls of D.H.S., the familiar faces of teachers appear as they hurry by, smiling a greet- ing of warmth and friendliness. On these, our teachers, we focus . . . Dr. Cagle congratulates new inductees in- to the National Honor Society. Sharing her experiences as an American Field Service Student, Mrs. Drummond stimulates an interest among the students Parents get to know — and like — our teachers on PARENTS ' NIGHT during American Education Week. Classes and homework are met with Ugh ' s and Oh No ' s by the students. Still, this major part of school work is tackled and usually enjoyed. Preparing for the future, the students are offered a wide variety of courses — shorthand, chemistry, carpentry, world histo- ry. On this, our academic life, we focus . . . Between-class meetings at lockers ' Once upon a time . 8 Music is an important part of Dur- ham High ' s curriculum. From the beau- tiful voices of the choirs to the sound- ing symbols of the band, the music groups are tops . Hard work has en- abled the band to go to the World ' s Fair in May and the Majorettes to win first place in the state contest, while the Concert Choir received honors. On these, the musicians, we focus . . . Practice makes perfect! The Discus Thrower Whompy-Do ! ! ! Excuse Me 10 Brownie points don ' t count! How ' s THAT for 500 Miles ?! Hey, can you make it to the meeting this after- noon? Clubs have always been busy at D.H.S., and this year has been no exception. From selling Kleenex to giving Hootenannies , they have really been On the ball. Students gain experience in lead- ership and responsibility by joining in activities. And at Durham High, there is a club for everyone — vocational, service, special interest. On these, our clubs, we focus ... Congratulations ! One giant step — May I? Nurses give shots?! CLASS OF 1964 Another year — our last year — and we leave behind a stream of memories that will last us a lifetime. The 1964 Senior Class is without doubt one of the most outstanding ones to pass through the halls of D.H.S. Robert Rhew, our lofty Senior Class President, served us fellow-classmen well with the help of Judy Atkins, our Vice-President. Gail Singletary wrote a mile a minute as she recorded the bus- iness of the senior-class meetings. Bill Taylor, our Treasurer, led the seniors to a financial victory as we ran away with the honors in the Budget Drive. Our worthy advisors, Mrs. Ridenhour and Mrs. Pen- ny, were always ready and willing to help with any problems. Fall Festival proved to be one of the most color- ful and fascinating ones Durham High School had ever seen. The night before our Homecoming game. Brother Massey and Sister Rudin led our famous Rejuvenation to boost school spirit with a sermon Ode to School Spirit which prepared the way for a successful and spirit-filled Red and White Day. Later we swooped down upon the Wilson Cyclones as our football team, led by senior co-captains Lin- wood Grady and Howard Hackney, dealt those final blows which led us to victory. Halftime brought the crowning of our lovely senior Homecoming Queen, Nita Wilkinson, who reigned over the re- maining Fall Festival activities. We were surely tired but proud after that week ! We superiors really did distinguish ourselves on Senior Day with all the senior girls in their Sunday best and the senior boys looking so neat and stately in their suits and ties. Basketball season for the year ' 64 was a winner . Senior Captain Wayne Mallard led our team to unlimited victories as eight out of twelve of our D.H.S. cheerleaders (all seniors) cheered the team on. Perhaps the most important event sponsored by the Senior Class was the Senior Play — Inherit the Wind. Sets were made, tickets were sold, pub- licity distributed, rehearsals staged, and then — the play — and what a success! The seniors really out- did themselves this time. With a group of determined Seniors, the Student Council worked hard throughout the year improv- ing D.H.S. in every form, way or manner known. A new committee was even organizied — the Ameri- can Field Service Committee — and though we were unable to have a foreign student this year, plans were made to have one next year. What an unselfish class we have ! College Night found many of us discussing our problems and future plans with professors and ex- perienced people in various occupations. This gave many of us the realization that we were soon to leave D.H.S. and go out into the world on our own. The Junior-Senior, the measuring for caps and gowns, the ordering of calling cards and gradu- ation announcements, the receiving of the Messen- ger and the last issue of the Hi-Rocket ... all these were soon to be among our memories. Then came graduation . . . Class Day, Gradu- ation Night, grey robes and long tassels, small white certificates tied with white bows, solemn sen- iors. For a moment, we looked fondly behind us then, with diploma in hand, we march on toward newer and higher goals. 1 SENIORS Dewey McKinley Adams Ken One who is jolly and uvselfinh in perhaps richer than all others. CLASS OF 1965 Juniors, Juniors everywhere . . . Somehow we Juniors manage to get into everything. This is due mainly to the fact that this year ' s Junior Class is the largest in D.H.S. history. Leading our large Junior Class are first semester President, Conway Harris, and sec- ond semester President, David Moore. Along with them are our other class officers, Carolyn Tippett, Secretary, and David Newton, Treas- urer, who have helped boost the Junior Class to the TOP ! Working right along with our class officers is our fabulous advisor, Mr. Fred Adair, even though he doesn ' t dance. We not only had great class officers, but a class that put its best foot forward from beginning to end to make our Junior Class one of the best ever. Peddling our Hog - Tie High Point tags with lots of school spirit and support for our team was our first way of becoming known, because who but a Junior would be begging you to pul-leeze buy a TAG ? Our school spirit really showed as four of our Junior girls were selected to cheer for the old Red and White. The excitement of Homecoming also caused a feeling of pride as we presented Susan Council as our Junior representative. We were also proud the day we received those long awaited for class rings. At last we were really a part of D.H.S. Our attention then turned to the Junior Talent Show where we worked hard to put on Spotlight on New York. All of our work, midnight rehearsals, and worry paid off as Conway Harris, playing the part of a country boy, was taken on a successful trip through New York City. Not only was the show fun to put on, but it put a large bulge in our class treasury. As we approached basketball season, the Juniors were in rare form. Nine out of our twelve basketball players were Juniors, as we had one of our best seasons ever. Who are you taking to the Jr.-Sr., Soph- o-more? We proudly asked as we added the final touches, adjusted the soft lights, and awaited the hour of the prom. Lovely dresses, pressed suits, and shining faces left many lingering memories to end our wonderful Jun- ior year at D.H.S. and to hopefully await the next. 103 JUNIORS Clint Abernethy Bonnie Adams Daniel Adams Jennifer Adams Kelly Adams Mike Adams Linda Aiken Julia Albright Parks Alexander Tony Allen David Anderson Judy Anderson Jimmy Andrews Mike Andrews Stephen Andrews Carla Anthony Patti Arapage Marti Austin Charles Atwater David Baber Pat Bailey John Barfield Carol Bartholomew Julia Batten Theresa Bouchard r Am i Am Jl Jlillili i w . ..1. jgHfc V ml Joyce Beal Joe Beavers Connie Beck Sarah Beckham James Belvin Neal Bengton Claude Bittle Pat Bivins Ronald Bivins Chris Blake Janis Blake Joan Blalock Paulette Blalock Lizette Boone Carol Bowen Lewis Bowles Linda Bowling Nyer Boyarsky Jessie Boyce Jane Boyd Linda Boykin Joan Bradshaw Sarah Branch Paul Briggs Henry Broadway Sandy Brock Carl Brown Mary Dee Brown Van Brown Nell Browning JUNIORS John Bryan Yvonne Bryan Robbie Bryant Debbie Buba Cathy Budd Alice Bumpass Michael Bumpass Betty Burch Bruce Burchett Carol Burgess Belita Burns Anita Burt Richard Busse Douglas Byrd Mickie Byrd Charles Caldwell Lynn Caldwell Betsy Callaway Debra Carden Corrina Carlisle James Carter Susan Cash Henry Cates William Cates Candy Cavin V 1 V - HlJi Aim j ? CLASS OF 1966 SOPHOMORE C As our first year at D.H.S. draws to a close, we as Sophomores can look back in this year with fond memories. Our excitement of our first games, fall fes- tival, our own homecoming representative, Janet Jones, and Orientation week when we were welcomed at assemblies with the hiss of ssssophomore and kindly shoved toward the nearest elevator by the upper classmen, were all a part of our first few weeks at D.H.S. Election of our class officers — Buddy Smith, president, Bobby Tyndall, vice-presi- dent, Kathy Davenport, secretary, and Betsy Bugg, treasurer, was a rewarding experi- ence. And how could we forget our own soph sock-hop, all the other sock-hops, the Christ- mas dance, and the sophomore dance ; the par- ;S HISTORY ticipation of the sophs in the Junior Talent Show and in the renewal of our spirit in the D.H.S. during Pep Week, the Rejuvenation, and Love Week? Our pride in the thrilling display of our sports teams could not be equaled. After seeing our canine friend. Buddy Smith in the dog house, after the budget drive, we became determined to be victors next year. Accepting the teasing comments of, Hey Soph, what are you wearing to the Junior-Senior? were all part of the fun. Now that this year has drawn to a close, we look forward to our promising next two years at D.H.S. with great anticipation, but this fir L year will always linger in our hearts and minds. 114 SOPHOMORES 1 Harley Abeinathy Brenda Adams Diane Addison Linda Addison Jackie Addison John Airheart Stephen Alexander Ronald Allen Polly Arena Kyle Arms Dottie Ai-nold Andy Ashley Ann Ashley Frank Bahnson Nancy Bailey Peggy Baker Hutch Baldwin Colon Barker Michael Barnes Barbara Barnhill Steve Barnhill Cindy Bari-ow Barbara Barry William Bates Margo Beach Nancy Beard Jimmy Beck Pam Bennett Judy Billings Linda Blackley Frances Blackwood Pam Boothe Terry Boyarsky Anne Boyles Suzanne Bradsher Charles Brockwell Mona Brothers Paulette Brown Ronnie Brown Sue Brown Susan Budd Betsy Bugg Diane Burke Bill Butler Mike Butler Vickie Butler Barbara Byrd Robbie Byrum ft ■ 7 ,i ' - f r £ ...Ml ii IS. Mr. Bell, can you print it by Friday? — Can I print it by WHEN? — Hmmmm, I wonder if we will get any reaction to this editorial — RUN! Aside from little problems that cropped up every once in a while, the Hi-Rocket and its staff had one of the best years in its forty- six. Last June we explained our bushel bas- ket style makeup to an exasperated lady in Chapel Hill at the Press Institute. Then we tried our hand at putting out a newspaper for the first day of school. It was three days late, but all ours! Twelve issues later we ' re nine months older and a lot wiser. Everything has to be done yesterday, but it isn ' t done BUSINESS STAFF Seated: W. Taylor Bus. Uh, I hate to be a spoil sport, but we have four pages of ads . . . too many! Any editorial ideas? No, we can ' t risk a law suit. In March it was on to New York for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association convention at Columbia University. In April the Quill and Scroll Banquet . . . and the respon- sibilities of this year ' s staff were passed on to the new one. This year ' s staff, mostly seniors, can leave DHS filled with pride and nostalgia for their three years of service to the Durham High School community.
