PRINCIPAL OF DURHAM HIGH SCHOOL C. E. CooKE ln 1.943 about the time the 1961 seniors were born, Mr. ttooke came to Durham lligh as assist- a11t principal. In 1945 he became principal. While principal at D.1l.S., he has watched her grow from an enrollment of 800 to an enroll.- ment of 1500. He has also seen her grow struc- turally. In 1950 a new gymnasium was built making room for the machine shop, carpentry, mechanical drawing, and distributive education classes. The science department was enlarged, and new laboratories were built. A new audi- torium, one of the finest in the state, was built allowing the library to be moved from second tioor front to across the hall, the audio-visual aid room and the conference room were en- larged, additional classrooms were built in the back upstairs hall, and the cafeteria was en- larged. 'ln 1961 a new science building was l'egun. EXtra-curricular activities, especially athlet- ics, have always played an important role at D.ll.S. Mr. Cooke has always taken an active part in improving and increasing the athletic department. ln his first years at D.ll.S., he served as head football and basketball coach. Basketball teams won seven state championships while Mr, Cooke was principal. ln 1950 the football team won the championship and went um 18 to Miami they won. ln 1960 a new city-county stadium Since his first year at D.H.S., Mr. to play in the Kiwanis bowl which was built. Cooke has photographed all home football games to run later for team showing. In 1959 he served as vice-president of the North Carolina Athletic Association, and in dent for 1.960-1961. 1960 he was elected presi- His interest has certainly not been limited to athletics. In 1959 he was given an Award of Honor by an international Quill and Scroll. He has literary society, the attended Columbia Scholastic Press Conventions, and was, in March 1961, presented by the CSPA a key of honor for his services to the publica- tions of Durham High School. Carefully guiding each student in his selec- tion of courses and colleges, Mr. Cooke repre- sented D,1l.S. on the College Entrance Exam- ination Board. Not only has Mr. Cooke watched thousands of seniors graduate, but he was most proud to hand diplomas to his own son and daughter. Mr. t'ooke's thirty-eiatht years with the llur- ham City Schools have been most beneficial for the city system, and Durham High will always remember his eighteen years of service and dedi- cation.
