. . . my three years at D. H September, 19523 and we piled into the unknown, the halls of llurhani High, for the first time. Orien- tation Week . . . need we say more? . . . Mr. Cooke's greeting' us by playing his harmonica . . .the familiar faces of the Traffic Committee kindly guiding us when lost. That year we elected as our officers Mason Wiilkins, presidentg lVarren Shankle, vice- presidentg Sarah NVeeks, seeretaryg and Buddy Durst, treasurer. 5 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS-Seated: Joanna Holloway, Standing : Donald Penny, presidentg .Timmy Erwin, viee president. treasurer, Eleanor Cowan, secretary. A few months passed and we presented to the mighty Juniors and Seniors our Sophomore Stunts. Somehow time flew and lleeember had eome. XYhat l'un it was attending' those games . . . winning' the lllastern Championship. llomeeoming eame and Bobbie Dean Purvis was our candidate for queen. Uh, of course, in our opinion the fllll'lStlIlIlS llanee was a great sueeess. Now we were old members ol' ll. ll. S., being PAGI-1 29 active in clubs, soeieties, and on eonnnittees. llow we rushed down the halls when bells rang' and -lA and 4B period for what? . . . SPlf'l41ll 'HAM SANDVVICHES. VVe acquired a taste for those sandwiches and ate them for three years. New Yearls resolutions were to STVIJY, STVDY, STUDY, but when finals ealne, we were still eranl- ining for biology, algebra, and English. Those final exams also meant that o11r first year at D. ll. S. was over. Begiiiniiig our junior year we anticipated great things ahead. After electing officers .linnny Erwin, president, Ken Hall, vice-presidentg Joyce Jernigan, secretary, and Joanna Holloway, treasurer, we real- ized that with only 83 eents in the treasury, some- thing' would have to be done .... A ND QVIUK. Gosh, but Jimmy, Mrs. Pat, and all of' us worked hard to make the .lunior Talent Show, Y'All Come, a big sueeess. It was wondert'ul, and we increased our S3 eents quite a bit. This was the year for big things. Besides our Junior-Senior Prom, Rhapsody world shaking' social event, the blast the foundations for our new in Bluef' being a dynamite used to auditorium, caused a bit of shaking, too. You guessed it . . . Bobbie Dean represented our elass as our Homeeoming' Queen candidate, again.

And then . . . ELECTIONS! First ca.me the responsibility of electing next year's Student Coun- cil officers. After this the results were announced, Ken Hall was president, Sudie Doughton, vice- presidcnt, Joyce Jernigan, secretaryg and Joe Bell, treasurer. Next we chose Donald Penny as presi- dent, Jimmy Erwin as vice-president, Eleanor Cowan as secretary, and Joanna Holloway as treasurer to lead our senior class in our final year. After that it was a big thrill to have seven mem- bers of our class inducted into the N. H. S. and to see our own friends becoming heads of the Student Council committees. Exams rolled around, but we were old hands by now, and the last exam just meant that the summer was that much closer. VVe went away mentally practicing the phrase rising senior. The big year was here, and we returned, realiz- ing that now we were MIGHTY SENIORS. We took over the student government, the Inter-Club Council, and the clubs and societies. The audi- torium structure had grown during the summer and it was half way toward completion. GRADUATION . . . we began to count up our units and ordered senior cards and graduation in- vitations. We watched the football team lose the state championship to Greensboro by a slim margin. NVQ? turned the tables, having the girls invite the boys to the Christmas Dance, 'tSilver Belles. We voted on the Messenger dedication and had our pictures taken for the annual. Our Town became the senior play and we heard our classmates walking down the halls reciting their lines. Our classmates became the stars on the basket- ball and baseball teams. The Juniors ente1'tained us as they gave the annual Junior-Senior Prom for us. Finally we were called to the office to be meas- ured for our robes. FINAL EXAMS . . . now our days were spent i11 studying, in practicing for class' night and grad- uation. The Messenger came out and we rushed frantically around having ours signed for the last time. Then came the Baccalaureate Exercises. WV1' presented Class Night and then marched in to the strains of Pomp and Circumstancef' being the first class to receive their diplomas in the completed audi- torium. As our last fling together, we attended the graduation dance. Now we are alumni, but never to be forgotten are the standing on our heads to drink at the water fountains . . . the soup UIQ in the cafeteria . . . our teachers . . . yelling at all the games . . . the accumu- lation of junk found in the lockers . . . the too narrow, always crowded halls . . . friendships made and strengthened . . . for these are D. H. S. to us. PAGE 29
