weekly D.H.S. on Parade added one ex- perimental TV session. We went about our work to the sound of construction as the new auditorium slowly rose. Queen Elizabeth reigned over Homecoming and we cheered our team to victory in the East- ern Triple A-then many of us trekked to Winston-Salem for that heartbreaking State Championship tie with Reynolds High. Under the Christmas Tree, the Christmas dance, was almost completely our responsibili- ty. Covering the gym with a giant Htree which dwarfed the dancers to doll-size, the Social Committee achieved a thing of beauty and a memory forever. We cheered our luckless basketball team and loved them all the same. NVhen our classmates on the team left it, our school spirit brought us out to cheer the scrappy sophomores. Class meeting took on a new importance as we chose the class gift Ca fan for the gymb, Messenger dedication, and senior play, and made plans for graduation. Spring rolled around bringing with it base- ball, track, the senior play Children of the Moon, an unusual and touching drama. And all of a sudden it was time for the Jun- ior-Senior Prom. Now we were the guests, and it seemed almost a bon voyage party. And then, the last week! Awards Day, Class Night, the Baccalaureate Sermon, and-Gradu- ation itself. VVe received those precious di- plomas, and then enjoyed ourselves together for the last time, at the Graduation Dance. Now, hard as it is to believe, we are Alumni. We look back and we see the happiest three years of our lives. We look forward and proudly face the uncertain future. Tomorrow will prove today ls ambitions. 43559 da PAGE 22

teams. We bought combination tickets and sat in the bleachers yelling for the Bulldogs-who came through with a four win, five lost, and three tied football season. We took part in Homecoming, putting up Elizabeth Jordan as our candidate for Queen. Our first touch of social life was the Leap Year Hop, held, appropriately enough, on Feb- ruary 29. Girls asked boys to the dance and for program dances. We followed the fortunes of the basketball team Cnine wins, three losses, second in the State Champ racej, baseball team Csix and sixj, and track team Csecond in the State meetb. To raise money we sold Bulldog stationery. We went to the Senior Play, Smilin' Through, a romantic tragedy. VVe chose our 11ext year 's officers, Sonny Evans, Bobby Northcutt, Jane Perry, and Bug Compton. At Graduation we bid farewell to those won- derful seniors who 'd helped so much to get us acquainted with Durham High. Singing HAuf Wiedersehen, we came back next September, much more experienced now in matters concerning Durham lligh. Now we were more than ever a class, instead of separate individuals. Again we sold that stationery! The first big activity was llomecoming, and again we nominated Liz for Queen. lt was ex- citing as ever, but this year it had an extra special touch-the state championship was de- pending on tl1e game. We came through on top that time with a perfect season, but few of us will soon forget that cold December night when the State Championship game was played. NVe lost to Reynolds, but win, lose, or draw, we still thought our team was best! XVe found ourselves having more to do with PAGE 21 preparations for the Christmas dance. The theme this year was t'NVinter Wonderland. Junior Talent Show! Just those three words were enough to bring fear to any junior 's heart. Could we do it? VVould it be a wonderful suc- cess or a dismal flop? Vile used the theme Under the Big Top and it was a wonderful success. NVe made over five hundred dollars, which we knew would mean a. grand Junior- Senior Prom. Sure enough, come May 15, the Junior-Senior came oif in expert style, and we felt it was a true tribute to our class. After days of plan- ning and decorating, the gym showed the touch of geniusf' Our theme, An En- chanted Evening on an .Enchanted Island, was carried out with South Sea Island murals. a hula dancer, a mammoth lei, and a giant silver seashell throne for king and queen Edgar Fisher Hllll Margaret Ann Kornegay. The seniors entertained us with their play, Double Door, a tense mystery drama superb- ly carried out. NVe elected our class and Student Vouncil officers-the ones whose pictures dot this book. Finally, graduation came upon us again. NVe eouldn't believe that now we were the seniors, and would be the next to wear those fateful caps and gowns! September again, and singing Vaya t'on Dios we began school for the last time. Now we were the ones with obligations and responsi- bilities-it was we who had to print the lli- Rocket, win the games, help the sopholnores. NVe sponsored Orientation Week and organized again the clubs and societies, adding three new ones this year, Tillet and Blackwell Literary Societies and the Math t'lub. We did our best to publicize the school and to the traditional
