This course was inclusive of the necessities ol any home lile. mon 24 e ibfzafzy This year, as always, the library played kill important part in the lives of tl1e stu- dents of lJlll'lliilI1 High. VVe have seen evi- dence of this because the library was always full of students. Vnder the direction of Miss Emily Loftin the library was kept clean and quiet. Its ma11y books. both educational and entertain- ing, served their purpose well. The library enjoyed a great honor this year. It played host to the North Carolina High School Library Association which met in the spring. The library has been an essential part of our school. NVe are proud of its many books and able director. ,,,. Miss Joyee Jones ibfe ,ibepafztment The Bible Classes, taught hy Miss Flrleen Gaskin, have come to be a most vital part of our high school curriculum. lt is very satisfying to know that spiritual enlighten- ment is found in the school as well as the church. It is also pleasing to note the enrollment of the Bible Ulasses increases each year. The students seek a greater knowledge ot' the Bible as well as a closer relationship with God. They realize knowledge of the Bible is an indispensable part of their education. 04115 lbepaztmeni Beyond the library, a turn to the right, up two flights of stairs, is the art room. Eaeh year we have a larger enrollment in the art elasses. lt is here that Durham Iligh's prospeetive artists learn commercial art, design, t-rafts, composition, art history, and delve into the many other phases of art. These 1-lasses, instructed by Miss Joyce Jones, painted posters, stage scenery, worked with library displays, and attempted to do all art work for the school. NVe Forty-Niners may leave Durham High with paint-smeared hands, but we eau say we have enjoyed our art elasses. Miss EI'lPPll Gaskin PAGE 23

For many years llurhani has watched the graduation ot' hundreds of t'oiips, and has seen them ovvupy very favorable posi- tions in the eonnnunity. There is to he found in this speeial elass a vast spirit of broiherhood. The Vluh offers opportunities ot' eduvation plus part-time employment. The t'oiip Alumni t'lub is al- ways aetive in aiding the members of the Coop t'lass. Miss Maude F. This department, which is present in schools throughout the eountry, is the first of its kind at Durham High Sehool. We were trained here in the arts of sales- manship and were taught the primfiples of retailing merchandise. The club advisers, Mr. Neal Bedinger and Mrs. Mildred S, Pic-kett, have done splendid work in establishing this department in our school. YVe and the citizens of Durham eer- tainly appreeiate their efforts. PAGE 25
