Twaclclell is affectionately calletl hy his stuclents, has, in his past nineteen years as tlirector ol' the Music Department in Durham High School, clone much in making the commtinity as well as the stutlents more music conscious anal appreciative. His choral groups have gainetl recognition throughout the nation as well as the state. The groups have a large repertoire which inclutles numhers from the Latin Miserere Mei to Oh, Susanna. Many students are regular memhers of the senior choirs of the city churches. The chorus, which is composed of approxi- mately t8o voices. receivetl first rating in the sectional music contest for girls, hoys, and mivetl numhers. Iirnie Walker, tenor, antl Ecl Lang- ley, hass, receivetl Iirst places while Sarah Dam- eron. soprano, antl Betsy Cilymph. alto, receivetl secontl. The girls' trio got I ancl the Ixoys' quartet anal mixecl quartet ratetl Two concerts were given in Chapel Hill, one heing the religious cantata Ruth hy .Xlliretl Gaul. They also sang at several civic cluhs antl in the Greensboro Music Festival. One of the highlights of the year was the presentation of Gilhert and SulIivan's operetta Trial hy Iuryf' with C. S. Realizing the need for a eluh devoted exclusively to the study ol' aviation and aeronauties, Mr. H. K. Collins and seventeen energetic hoys organized the lirst such clulu in Durham High. It was a great sueeess, and this year with an increased memher- ship and a more amhitious program, it again proved its worth. The elulw has only one purpose: to promote in- terest in aviation. At each meeting new develop- ments in aeronauties are discussed hy the memhers --model huilding, although not a scheduled part ol thc eluh program, is carried on hy a large ntnn- her ol' the memhers.
