REFLECTIONS A REVIEW OF STUDENT EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES AT DURHAM COLLEGE, OSHAWA SEPTEMBER 1982 TO MAY 1983 Staff Photos Page 17 Class Photos Page 33 Events Page 63 Varsity Sports Page 73 Advertising Page 87 Conclusion Page 94 Credits Page 96 Who Needs to Study? 1 4 Fun Games School life isn ' t all fun games, but when the opportunity comes along most students don ' t hesitate to join in. The Oshawa Santa Claus Parade float was constructed by the S.A.C. Executive and their friends to entertain children in the parade and to show Oshawa residents the students can be productive. Other activities included: the scavenger hunt during orientation week, playing records for the radio club, and relaxing between classes in the student lounge. The girl on the opposite page demonstrates one of the hazards of being a Graphic ' s student. 9 Pubs: Drink, Dance and Be Merry! 10 I I I Guess Who? at the Halloween Pub The masquerade of masquerades took place at the Jubilee Pavilion on Friday, October 29, 1982. Students and guests alike were dressed in every imaginable costume from PacMan to a sweet transvestite. The Bopcats, a basic rock-a-billy band, entertained with great success at the Hallowe ' en Pub. A Boat Racing (or Beer Chugging) Contest was held at this pub and proved to be quite interesting. Best Costume winner was Gregg Sanko, a knight in shining armour. Bill Kidd won as the most original costume, a lamp that actually worked. The Best Group Costume prize was awarded to Rick Banks, Jim Finley, Scott Larkin, and Mike Sweeney who accurately resembled a four-pack of Molson. All winners received a Bopcat album and Best Costume Winner Sanko also won a dinner for two at Bailey ' s Balloon Brigade. A Pumpkin Carving Contest was also held October 29th in Durham ' s main cafeteria. The four categories of the contest were as follows: funniest, look-alike, most original and scariest. Teams, consisting of four members, took their imagination and creativity to the limit in their efforts to impress the panel of illustrious judges. The look-alike winners were Lori Kudla, Keith Lightizer, Joanne Lillico and Jack Tretter with their rendition of Bob Marley. The most original winners were Andy Carstairs, Julio Cashin, Terri Howie and Dave MacDonald with their creation pictured above: a pumpkin with golf ball eyes, a light bulb nose and a real cow ' s tongue protruding from its mouth. 15 i V STAFF Board of Governors John McLaughlin Brian Perry Ehzabeth Schaefer Maurice Wade Rex Waiters Peter Zakarow Administration Mel Garland Merrill Cook Lister Robinson Herb Kirkconnell Jim Kirkconnell GordMcTavish President Administrator Dean Dir. Try programming one! Just asi any Technology or Business student how fun computers are at 11:00 pm when their programs have errors. You ' ll soon find out just how frustrating they can be. BASIC isn ' t so bad compared to FORTRAN, COBOL, Assembler and RPGII all of which are taught at Durham. As the year progresses, the Graphics and Design Arts stu- nts start to feel the pressure. It is hard to do good artwork 2 a.m., the morning before it is due. 66 67 68 Pubs Again! Here ' s looking at you kid Durham College has been granted a conditional liquor licence by the L.L.B.O. clearing the way for a resumption of pubs starting on Jan. 28. Durham Regional Police stipulated that SAC president, Don Beaton, take responsibility for the signing of all permits, two police officers be hired for each pub, and the bar must be closed by 12 a.m. and tables cleared within 45 minutes or the licence will be revoked. Murray Christenson, executive vice-president, said, Hopefully after running a couple of pubs under these conditions we can have the restrictions lifted. - Durham Chronicle Boat racing finals on Oct. 29 by Darlene Beckett Friday, October 15, marked the date of Durham College Octoberfest Pub . The turn-out for this festivity was impressive. This pub did have one distinction from the last Durham Pub, a Boat Racing Contest. Now some of you might be wondering, how they can race boats at a pub? That is not the case. The definition of boat racing is ' Beer Chugging! ' There are five people to a team, with one general rule: the team must consist of at least one girl. The object of the race is to see which team can chug one beer each, in record time. A team member could not start drinking until the team member before him had her or his glass on the table. No dribbling was allowed. Out of the 14 teams that competed, only the top six teams can go to the finals. The team that took first place in this round of competition was the D-Wing Bongos , who downed their beers in an incredible 21 seconds. The team consists of Matt War- burton, Chris Hughes, Dave Dickson, Rob McClean and Darlene Beckett. Coach of the team is Keith Lightizer, external vice- president of Student Administrative Council (SAC). The Bongos worked very hard to achieve first place in this first round of drinking. They had many practices to gain speed and accuracy. Individual time trials helped the team to get their chugging down pat. Team members Dave Dickson revealed to the Chronicle, some of the team ' s secrets. You have to keep your mouth as close to the glass as possible. When it is your turn, you have to tip your head back, open your mouth as wide as possible and chug like hell! He also added, When you do drink, think that it is milk. The teams ' main fear is the competition from the second place team, The SAC Swillers , who trailed closely behind with 28 seconds. What are the after-effects of such an event? Dave Dickson sums up the answer in one word: Burp! He also adds, Then you celebrate by drinking more beer! The competition will be slightly more difficult second time around because in order to win, the teams must chug two beers instead of one. The results of these finals should be rather interesting. The finals are to be held on Friday Oct. 29. The top six teams advancing to the finals are: T3E E21 Brew Jays, consisting of Tony Pulla, Wayne Russell, Ron Clancy, John Scrinvanich and Maxine Graham. The V21 Alcoholics, consisting of Anne iVIarie Ford, Rob Nacarato, Eric Christopher, Lorne Johnston and Ken Edwards. These two teams will compete at 8: 10 p.m. The two teams battling it out at 8:15 p.m. will be the B3 Bombers, which is Mike Klein, Colin Patrick, Marylou Dufton and Stan Chomrack and Vick Mikos. The Boat People consisting of Barry Goodwin, Lynn Graham, Mike Meade and Doug Parrot. And last but not least, the D-Wing Bongos vs. The SAC Swillers at 8:20 p.m. The SAC Swillers team includes Murray Christenson, Jack Tretter, John Smegal, Craig Sharp and Cathy Cabourie. 69 ebhtu three VARSITY SPORTS Men ' s Basketball L-R Back Dominic Belmonte, Rob Sharp, Scott Dennis, Randy Winterinic, Eric Carter, Don Mcllveen (coachi).
