1981 82 - THE YEAR IN REVIEW by Neil Wick Aren ' t you glad you ' re not a world leader? Ronald Reagan was shot, Pope John Paul II was shot, and Anwar Sadat was shot and killed. Even our own Queen Elizabeth had a gun fired at her. Luckily, the gun only contained blanks, but it ' s not too reassuring no matter how you look at it. The wedding of the century Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married in July and millions of people all over the world woke up at all kinds of strange hours to watch the wedding. It was re-broadcast in Canada at about the time people usually get up and then again in the evening. If that wasn ' t enough, yet another re-broadcast came on Christmas day. The record album of the royal wedding ceremony became a best seller in England where it topped the album charts for a time. Car sales still travelling downhill Car sales hit a 20-year low as the North American auto makers continued their frantic scramble to catch up with the imports by offering smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. The Canada Act: made in Canada, approved in Britain After endless arguments and stalemates, all the provinces except Quebec agreed to a new constitutional package, and the new constitution was finally sent to Westminster for ap- proval. EW CANADA PONDS 19% FIRST YEAR DE SURE OF TOMORROW Be it ever so humble, there ' s no place like your own home Interest rates this year hit a record high. The Canadian prime lending rates topped 21% at one time and people feared the day when their mortgages would come up for renewal and the new payments would force them out of their homes. For people with money, there were plenty of lucrative savings plans, but unemployment was high and extra money scarce. 29

Strike one The baseball season in the summer of 1980 was a short one; actually two short ones. The first baseball strike in the history of major league baseball resulted in a split season and everyone had to wait to see how the hot new player, Fernando Valenzuela would do. Strike two The other strike that made news this year was the U.S. air controllers ' strike, but it didn ' t last very long because President Reagan fired all the air controllers that didn ' t come back to work. With high unemployment, you can always find new people to fill the jobs. Up into the air then into the water Whether the air controllers did their job or not, there was still a big jet accident this year as Air Florida flight 90 ripped off the tops of cars and crashed into the Potomac River during some of the coldest weather in many years. 78 people died in the icy water. Durham College gets CAD CAM centre The computer age is starting and Durham College, from all indications, is staying right ahead of the crowd. We got a new Computer Assisted Design Computer Assisted Manufacturing Centre this year to add to our already extensive computer and word processing facilities. ROUTE A 37 RUSH 07 The second stop on the space bus run The U.S. space shuttle made its second trip into space, proving that the vehicle was indeed reusable, but the highlight of the trip for Canadians was the test of the Canadarm, manufactured in Toronto, and given as a gift by Canada to the space shuttle project. But would it sound as good as the Rolling Stones? A little farther out in space Voyager II sent back spectacular pictures of Saturn and its rings. We discovered that it had not hundreds of rings as Voyager I ' s pictures had indicated, but thousands of rings like the grooves on a record. Leafs minus 27 equals zero Darryl Sittler, captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs for over 5 years, and one of the most popular players, was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in January, although the announcement that he would be traded came much earlier. 1 IxjOwhi. Bjy llijmpj 1981 82 catalogue: Keep this book until August, 1982 The Hudson ' s Bay Company an- nounced in December that it was closing its Shop-Rite Catalogue Stores at the end of January, 1982. •fthm Just hope for the Return of the Lost Art If the art of movie-making is going downhill, so is the attendance at the theatres. The producers continued to strive for a blockbuster this year, but dismal attendance figures ensued. One big film was Raider of the Lost Ark which opened during the summer and continued into 1982. 3-D movies were re-introduced with Comin at Ya which had spectacular visuals, but a hackneyed plot. 30
