REFIECTIONS I 2 I PUBS: THE MORE, THE MERRIER s; ' .::: v, ' . ' ...-. ' AV, ' ., ; ' .-S Crimes of Passion Rick Santers Band Harlequin Blue Peter Performer Kelowna Gilt - September - October - November - January - February - March - April The Rick Santers Band (left) entertained at the Hallowe ' en pub and Crimes of Passion (u pper left corner) was very popular at the September pub. Pub tickets this year were $4.00, beer tickets sold for $1.25 and liquor tickets were $1.50. Everyone who went out to the pubs had a great time. For social nights (no alcohol) there were three movies shown: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Jazz Singer and The Blues Brothers. 7 HALLOWE ' EN PUB Band: Rick Santers Band. Best Costume: The prize for the best costume went to someone who was out of this world - an all round nice guy, Chewbacca from Star Wars. Best group costume: It wasn ' t any surprise when the best group costume went to some truly sexy guys. After all what could be more sexual than a sperm bank. SANTA CLAUS PARADE The SAC Executive and friends participated in the Oshawa Santa Claus Parade. A group of interested students got together on the preceding Saturday for a day of partying and float building. Billy Kidd dressed up as the All- Canadian Hero, and with his clown partner, they gave out mounds of candies to kids along the parade route. 13 CHRISTMAS BEER BASH ENDS EXAMS At exactly 3:32, Dec. 16, 1981, the cafeteria at Durham went wild with excitement. Exams were finally over and there were cases of free cold beer to be drunk. The 300 students that attended suddenly turned from quiet, studious human bemgs to wild, fren- zied animals. Beer was flying, Christmas Kisses were being given to anyone who would take them, and parties were being arranged within a couple of minutes. The highlight of this bash came about 4:15 when in walked none other than Santa and his little elf. Although Santa knew that Durham College students had been anything but good all year, being the jolly old fellow that he IS, he passed out candy canes, and kisses to all the girls. (Santa ' s no fool!). The Bash was over at 6:00 (and not one minute too soon, because the beer had run out.) Some people were wringing out their clothes (drenched with beer) just to get a few more drops. However, for most this was not the finish of their partying, but rather the beginning. 15 J STAFF Board of Governors Administration Mel Garland President Reg Smith Lister Robinson Herb Kirkconnell Jim Kirkconnell Jim Brady Administrator Dean Dir. Ronald Reagan was shot, Pope John Paul II was shot, and Anwar Sadat was shot and killed. Even our own Queen Elizabeth had a gun fired at her. Luckily, the gun only contained blanks, but it ' s not too reassuring no matter how you look at it. The wedding of the century Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married in July and millions of people all over the world woke up at all kinds of strange hours to watch the wedding. It was re-broadcast in Canada at about the time people usually get up and then again in the evening. If that wasn ' t enough, yet another re-broadcast came on Christmas day. The record album of the royal wedding ceremony became a best seller in England where it topped the album charts for a time. Car sales still travelling downhill Car sales hit a 20-year low as the North American auto makers continued their frantic scramble to catch up with the imports by offering smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. The Canada Act: made in Canada, approved in Britain After endless arguments and stalemates, all the provinces except Quebec agreed to a new constitutional package, and the new constitution was finally sent to Westminster for ap- proval. EW CANADA PONDS 19% FIRST YEAR DE SURE OF TOMORROW Be it ever so humble, there ' s no place like your own home Interest rates this year hit a record high. The Canadian prime lending rates topped 21% at one time and people feared the day when their mortgages would come up for renewal and the new payments would force them out of their homes. For people with money, there were plenty of lucrative savings plans, but unemployment was high and extra money scarce. 29 Strike one The baseball season in the summer of 1980 was a short one; actually two short ones. The first baseball strike in the history of major league baseball resulted in a split season and everyone had to wait to see how the hot new player, Fernando Valenzuela would do. Strike two The other strike that made news this year was the U.S. air controllers ' strike, but it didn ' t last very long because President Reagan fired all the air controllers that didn ' t come back to work. With high unemployment, you can always find new people to fill the jobs. Up into the air then into the water Whether the air controllers did their job or not, there was still a big jet accident this year as Air Florida flight 90 ripped off the tops of cars and crashed into the Potomac River during some of the coldest weather in many years. 78 people died in the icy water. Durham College gets CAD CAM centre The computer age is starting and Durham College, from all indications, is staying right ahead of the crowd. We got a new Computer Assisted Design Computer Assisted Manufacturing Centre this year to add to our already extensive computer and word processing facilities. ROUTE A 37 RUSH 07 The second stop on the space bus run The U.S. space shuttle made its second trip into space, proving that the vehicle was indeed reusable, but the highlight of the trip for Canadians was the test of the Canadarm, manufactured in Toronto, and given as a gift by Canada to the space shuttle project. But would it sound as good as the Rolling Stones? A little farther out in space Voyager II sent back spectacular pictures of Saturn and its rings. We discovered that it had not hundreds of rings as Voyager I ' s pictures had indicated, but thousands of rings like the grooves on a record. Leafs minus 27 equals zero Darryl Sittler, captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs for over 5 years, and one of the most popular players, was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in January, although the announcement that he would be traded came much earlier. 1 IxjOwhi. Bjy llijmpj 1981 82 catalogue: Keep this book until August, 1982 The Hudson ' s Bay Company an- nounced in December that it was closing its Shop-Rite Catalogue Stores at the end of January, 1982. •fthm Just hope for the Return of the Lost Art If the art of movie-making is going downhill, so is the attendance at the theatres. The producers continued to strive for a blockbuster this year, but dismal attendance figures ensued. One big film was Raider of the Lost Ark which opened during the summer and continued into 1982. 3-D movies were re-introduced with Comin at Ya which had spectacular visuals, but a hackneyed plot. 30 VOUT«« Did you say you were carrying your new stereo in your pocket? Sony introduced their Walkman portable stereo, and a proliferation of imitations quickly followed. There was some controversy in this area when a boy listening to music through head- phones was killed by a train as he took a shortcut across the railroad tracks. A man in the train tried to warn him, but there was no response from the boy, and the train couldn ' t stop in time. For those not wanting to be so discreet about their music, giant ghetto blasters were also popular and you could broadcast your taste in music, or lack of it, to everyone around you. We wish we could say crime doesn ' t pay, but . . . The RCMP in British Columbia were widely condemned for paying $100,000 to an undisclosed party in return for being told the locations of the victims of mass murderer Clifford Olson. Cy} International Year of the Disabled During 1981, efforts were made to focus on the needs of the disabled person. Wheelchair ramps were built in various places, a few public phones appeared with volume controls, and closed captioning began for TV programs. Hope is everlasting Although Terry Fox died last year, his Marathon of Hope continued in the first annual Canada-wide Marathon of Hope run for cancer, and we exceeded Terry ' s seemingly impossible goal of $1 for every person in Canada during the first part of 1982. Maybe if we ' d laughed with them, not at them For 3 Bucks You ' re Laughin ' at the CNE the ads told us. The ads em- phasised the fact that a trip to The Ex could be far less expensive than a trip to you-know-where. In fact, everyone seemed to promote the idea that they could give more value for less money than the new kid on the block, Canada ' s Wonderland. The CNE lost money for the second year in a row, despite all the hype. Coo-loocoo-coo Coo-loocoo-coo, Coo-loocoo-coo Coo-coocoo-coo Take off, you hoser, to The Great White North, eh? G ' day, and welcome to 1981. Beer-drinking, back-bacon- frying Bob and Doug McKenzie took their short feature from the Second City Television show and made a record album, instantly giving themselves international popularity. A new hour for changing times Apparently, the CBC thinks we should go to bed an hour earlier, and they finally unveiled their new late night news format after many delays, followed by an ad campaign meant to convince us that this move was probably the most important event of our lives. 31 wwwRm Over 3 billion aggravations, but only one solution It all starts with a little plastic cube, every side a different colour, A twist here and a twist there and every side seems to be nine different colours. It seems impossible that the thing could ever again look the same as it did when you bought it. If you buy one of those little books giving A SIMPLE SOLUTION TO RUBIK ' S CUBE you may end up even more confused than before. Try ANOTHER SOLUTION TO RUBIK ' S CUBE. Still no help? You could buy those little coloured stickers to put on your cube, or maybe you could take it apart and then put it back together again. No, that wouldn ' t help you if your friends asked to see how you did it. If you have given up solving the puzzle, just buy one of those cube smashers or how about another book to add to your collection: 101 USES FORADEAD RUBIK ' SCUBE. United we stand, united they fall The news turned away from the almost monotonous daily reports of how many had been executed in Iran, and the thoughts of people everywhere turned to Poland as the government clamped down martial law on the country, curbing the activities of Solidarity which had won so many labour concessions there last year. News reports from the troubled country were sketchy at best and U.S. threats of retaliation to the Soviets in the event of any intervention were frequent. More powerful than a shooting Rocket, able to score 50 goals in 39 games, it ' s . . . Wayne Gretzky, still one of the youngest players in the NHL, scored 50 goals in 39 games, surpassing a 50 goal in 50 game record made in 1944 by Rockert Richard. Everyone watches to see what this Superplayer will do next. Ali fights his last fight After retifing countless times, Mohammed Ali was finally defeated for the last time at the Drama in the Bahamas. Some people never give up. Never mind the peanuts; get some jelly beans As Ronald Reagan completed his first full year as president of the U.S., peanuts were gone from the news, but Ronnie ' s liking for jelly beans gave a boost to the popularity of that candy. The Roy Massey New Thompson Hall As the New Massey Hall neared completion, we learned that the hall would be officially called the Roy Thompson Hall, because of the sizeable donation towards its construction given by the Thompson family. Some people who didn ' t like the Thompson family very much said that they ' d rather continue to call it the new Massey Hall. Another spike in VIA ' s coffin In an effort to improve train service, the Canadian government closed about 30% of the Canadian passenger ser- vice routes. Some people didn ' t think it was much of an improvement, but they were powerless to stop it. Like maybe if we doubled the rates, A? In another effort towards improved service, the Canadian post office became a crown corporation, then the sight of a letter with a 17 cent stamp on it became a thing of the past. In its place came the 30 cent A stamp. We ' re still waiting for the improved service. APPLIED ARTS DIVISION 34 students in the Applied Arts division this year spent a lot of their time travelling around the continent. First-]rear Graphic Design and Interior Design had an exchange with students from Newfoundland. Second - and third-year Design students went to New York to tour art galleries. The Chronicle staff went to the Grey Cup game to cover the events, and the Journalism students also went to Quebec City. 35 Cll BACK ROW: Scott Cowden Steve Weaver Shirley Freek BACK ROW: Terry Skelly Jim Coakwell Greg Grant Brian Dalton Mark Cummings RonSiddle BACK ROW: Suzanne Steel Rick Bionda Chris Yli-Luoma Darrell Townson Alan Hurst Cathy Gettins Daphne Hunt Jacques Michaur BACK ROW: Joe Sarnovsky Scott Kirby Carol Sakamoto Tim Torgerson Gw en Newman MIDDLE ROW: Susan Woodley Danielle Godin KimSutch Liz Shpilman Henry Veinot MIDDLE ROW: Leisa Cronsberry Rosemary Campbell Lori Kinsman Nancy Lynn Priscella Bates MIDDLE ROW: Sarah Molyneux Lori Poulten Sue Field Karen Berlenbach Penny Barton Allyson Lucas Jackie Glass MIDDLE ROW: Judy Earle Ellen Jagoe Maria Normantino JaneTamblyn Sharon Bartlett Jennifer Bain FRONT ROW: Wendy Brown Nancy Ignazzitto Wanda Lecuyer M. Students spent many hours in the library doing research, in the student lounge studying, and most of all, in the cafeteria eating junk food and playing euchre. A day without euchre was worse than a math test on Friday afternoon. Other favourite ac- tivities of business students included overloading the word processing system with useless documents, and spending valuable CPU time playing games on the computer. 45 Bll BACK ROW: Pak-Chung Sau Pierre Lazo George Somerville Wayne Lowry Ken Gorak Van Schyndel Russ Dean McNena Brenda Honingh Mark MacDonell Bruno Scanga Kelly E.
