DURHAM COLLEGE P.O. BOX 335 OSHAWA ONTARIO LIBRARY POEMS, PRAYERS AND PROMISES , I ' ve been lately thinkin ' r . . About my life ' s time, • ' • . All the things I ' ve done, ' , And how it ' s been, And I can ' t help believin ' In my own mind, ■ , , I know I ' m going to hate . ■ • To see it end. „ . • . • ■ I ' ve seen a lot of sunshine, « Slept out in the rain, Spent a night or two • All on my own, ' I ' ve done my ladies pleasure Had myself some friends, . Spent a time or two in my home. I have to say it now, It ' s been a good life all in all. It ' s really fine to have A chance to hang around Lie there by the fire And watch the evening tire, While all my friends And my old lady, Sit and pass the pipe around. And talk of poems, prayers and promises. Things that we believe in How sweet it is to love someone How right it is to care. How long it ' s been since yesterday, What about tomorrow? What about our dreams? And all the memories we share? The days they pass quickly now, Nights are seldom long, The time around me o Whispers when it ' s cold The changes somehow frighten me, Still I have to smile It turns me on To think of growing old. Though my life ' s been good to me There is still so much to do. So many things My mind has never known, I ' d like to raise a family, I ' d like to sail around, Dance across the mountains on my own. I have to say it now, v It ' s been a good life all in all It ' s really fine to have A chance to hang around, .. Lie there by the fire And watch the evening tire, ■ . •. . Wliile all my friends And my old lady, Sit and pass the pipe around. . ' And talk of poems, prayers and promises, Things that we believe in, How sweet it is to love someone. How right it is to care, How long it ' s been since yesterday, Wliat about tomorrow? What about our dreams? . And all the memories we share? . ■ John Denver As fleeting as a summer breeze, the memories of youth blow across my mind ruffling the tossled hair of my youth as the wheat fields bowed and paid homage to our bam. Our bam, a refuge for the pigeons and sparrows of our farm and also to the childhood fantasies of the rope. Tlae Rope. While it possessed a sense of quiet, subhminal terror for the hearts of childhood, the fear was forgotten as the exhileration of the swing gripped your very soul. And while I would gladly trade the corridors of adolescents for the country laijes of childhood, I can not help but feel a change occurring in my soul. The past unbridled fantasies of childhood are being replaced by the responsibihties of an emerging adulthood. To be an adult, one is told to be responsible, and to get a job one must go to college. College, ironically enough, is where the childhood act of indulging in imaginative play, manifests itself in the actions of young adulthood. Dressing up like mom and dad is now called going to a pub in ' 50 ' s costume, and the art of drinking tea with your dolls, is replaced with drinking beer with the boys. Alas the magic of childhood and youth is melting away, as one approaches the time of initiation into life. The security of mom ' s skirts is gone, and the fears and anxieties of the future must be born alone. 9i r. Mil MEMORIES 9 Tides of emotion wash in And out with ebbing tears Emotions of mingled colours And cries of darkened fears Cresting waves of yesterday ' s years Where time had stood still For a second glance to see Yourself reflecting from a mirror Those lines of wrinkled times And aging thoughts and rhymes The tears and fears of mine So distant yet for me so near An awakening image of idols And costumes for me to wear To play the stage and roles Where acting replaced my soul And I lost my thoughts to hold Stripped naked and blind to seeing My tiding emotions and natural being. 11 Years from now, in future days that no one can determine, will it be the conversations or the pictures that hold the greatest memories? Or perhaps a combina- tion of both? For to look back through the pages of a lifetime and recall the moments of joy and sorrow, we will always feel a closeness of being associated with what once was, but as well, with what might have been. Cafeterias of the world are all the same food for thought and exchanges of views. Helping people, shaving the veneer, modelling concensus and leading weight by strings might well in fact demonstrate the need to all that if we are to overcome loneliness, we must be open to ourselves and others. And that is life, for is not life memories? David Macdonald 58 WHAT ' S NEW We sit together, the three of us. Verbally back-patting, hand-holding Shouldering one another ' s tears Not at all the intellectuals people think we pretend to be By the path of our meandering, up-tripping conversations I glimpse the signs all along the Durham trail; Mother - surrogate - two cents Poetic license to self-alienate - a nickel Intellectual appeals heard - just a phone-call dime And then I realize I ' ve thoughtlessly put on glasses Labelled ' stereotype ' , their lenses scratched, unjustified frames, The arms a plastic confinement on my brain (and me with twenty-twenty vision, too!) My companions, seeing that I do not see, gently pry them off And again I see things as they are Which isn ' t really all that bad. Jikke Miedema 1976 59 THE BEGINNING Here we all stand waiting for the moment Some people smiling others with looks of vision We ' re in a forum with the people seated around us. The crowds cheering and applauding fate. The masses are welcomed and the speech is given And within a few moments the games begin. Those inside the arena look anxious and cautious. The crowd sits hushed waiting, waiting, waiting, And then it begins and the people cheer. One by one we walk up the stairs Our destination in the hands of another And our minds inside our heads. We ' re ready to do battle and fulfill our whims We walk up on stage and receive our sword Some take it and hold it high While others lay it to their side. Now we ' re fully dressed for battle We leave the arena to search for the holy grail. Our training is finished and now we must employ our skills. T. B. 63 Four ways to look at number one . . .
