Students Plan To Protest Come to College Against Dress Regulations A planned walkout by 100 Durham College students has caught the college ' s administra- lion by surprise. The students, disgrunfled by dress regulations at the colleg that call for expulsion if a stu- dent does not wear a sports jacket and tie. .said they would walk out with placards and signs- to protest the rule. Dr. G. E. Willey, president of the college, was unavailable for comment. A spokesman from the office of the Dean of Student Affairs Rnyn ihe adminisf ration had had no warning of the walkout, bv ' Students Chose Well students attending Durham Col- lega have chosen well in their selec- tion of officers for their student council. Their choice of responsible . gtudent leaders became particularly fvident this week when a sudden d«mon8tration flared up over dress ■ rtfulationj. Worth noting arc the statements mtdft by the council president and ent of the council members to the •tudents taking pnrt in the pro- clls of their , colleagues elected by students are playing roles of influ- ence in the interests of students. Certainly in the case of college dress regulations the issue would appear to have been one the coun- cil and the administrators were competent to sort out without dif- ficulty. As has been seen elsewhere there have been matters of such moment In educational institutions that as last resorts students have been forc- ed to stage mass protest demonstra- tions. In a number of such instanc- es their cause has been such that they have won wide support. The episode at Durham hardly falls into this category. It seems a case of endeavoring to zero-in with a cannon when not even ti pea-shooter was needed to hit the target. It did however show the stu- dent council to be in good hands, ' surely capable of acting in the l)est interests of student. ;, when they permit it to do so. 16
