Today, you embark upon a new and most interesting phase of your young lives-continued formal education for some, technical training and employment for others, and military for yet others but for all, new and exciting ventures. All of us in the Public Schools believe that we have prepared you well for the challenges that lay ahead. We need you to meet those challenges and to make this planet safer, cleaner, fairer for all who follow. My congratulations to the teachers who have instructed you, your parents, and friends who have loved and cared for you, and finally and most important of all, to you. Good luck and God Bless you! John R. Correiro Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1989: Congratulations as you conclude another chapter on your life’s journey! I have had the fortunate opportunity to watch you grow from young students in the early grades of our school system into mature, responsible young adults. I hope your growth will continue and that you will take advantage of all the opportunities that lie before you. Many of you will be going on to further educational op- portunities, while others will begin employment en- deavors. Let me extend to all of you my sincerest best wishes on whatever road you choose as you continue through life. Be proud with society. Always remember your years in Fall River Public Schools and more particularly your success and achievements here at Durfee High School. I would suggest that you use all of your abili- ties, talents, and achievements to lead a fulfilling and fruitful life. Be the best that you possibly can be! Once again, congratulations on joining the elite group that proudly call themselves alumni of Durfee High School. James M. Gibney Assistant Superintendent of Schools John R. Correiro Superintendent of Schools James M. Gibney Assistant Superintendent 1 James S. Panos Principal As the class of 1989, you are completing the next to-last decade of this century. By the time the century ends, you will be well into your jobs, your careers, your professions. A great number of you will proba- bly have been married by then and have families of your own that you have brought into a world of, hopefully, great promise and potential. One thing I hoped you have learned in this past decade is that you, as individuals, can have some control over what the future will be. The rebirth of Fall River has occured during this decade, primarily through the efforts of local people and local leader- ship, and your city consequently has a much brighter future. You can build on that success, and make Fall River even better for the sons and daughters that you will be bringing into the next century. I know that you are aware of your responsibilities to yourselves, your city, and to those who will follow you, I wish you good luck in carrying out those responsibilities. James S. Panos Principal William J, Molloy Vice Principal In the educational process it is difficult to see the results of one’s efforts immediately. Often it is years later that a student becomes aware of an educators efforts. Many of you have responded so well to our efforts that we have all ready realized a sense of ac- complishment. Whitney Houston suggests, ‘i laid the plans, now lays the chance in my hands.” We have been a part of your plans along with your parents and you. Now it is up to you to be the very best in your moment in time. Tennyson states that “We are part of all that we have met.” You have left a lasting impression on Durfee and on me. As you become Durfee alumni, a part of you remains and a part of us goes with you optimisitcally, confidentially, and proudly. When all of these abilities are combined, they better more aware person, and an individual. Teacher!student relations are of great importance here at Durfee. For four years teachers are our friends, confidantes, and instructors. They devote them- selves endlessly to guiding us down the road to adulthood as to Relate well as the road of success. Students in our school are very involved with the community. This applies to athletes, volun- teer work, or a part time job. Con I i ference title. The boys destroyed the competi - tion with an impressive 8-1 record. Although the whole team contributed to the successful season some individuals did stand out. namnnani A key trackster was Steve Bradbury, who was elected to the SMC All Star Team for the pole vault. Bradbury qualified for the All State Meet and placed second in the pole vault. He also competed in the All New England meet for the second year in a row. Also in the pole vault was Chris Palumbo, who qualified for the All State Meet in his second year of track. Others who contributed a great deal to the team and were elected to the SMC All Star list were Tony Dias, an out- standing intermediate hurdler, Sean Connell in the high jump and in the mile Rene Gagnon. “The boys’ team more than exceeded our expectations for the season. They all preformed better than they had to, said coach George Moniz. In order to make this article complete we should take time out to pay tribute to all those atheletes who weren’t always in the spotlight but contributed highly to the teams victorious season; Aaron Gerraughty and Jeff Nogueira in the 800 m, Doug Medeiros in the two mile, Dave Gluchacki in the 100 m and 200 M, Peter Griffin and Jeff Leman in the shot, Joe Furtado in the discus and Shawn Davis in the javelin. RECORD 8 -1 1988-1989 SEASON SOFTBALL he Girls softball team this year finished the regular season with a record of 12-8 and a berth in the tournament. With the loss of star pitcher Robin Desrediers Randolph High School at Randolph Middle School. The starting line-up for the Toppers included pitcher Whipp, catcher Lori Bosi, first baseman Laurie Farquar, shoort stop Holly Thompson, third baseman Claudine RECORD 12-8 last year, the furture looked uncertain, but Kris Whipp stepped in and filled the spot well. Some of the Toppers’ toughest losses were to New Bedford High, Somerset, and Dartmouth, but they evened off the season by defeating Falmouth, Connolly, and Attleboro. Cloutier, left fielder Renata Medeiros, center fielder Kelly Monte, and right fielder Tammy Barlow. 1988-1989 SEASON In the second inning, Donna Costa came in to pitch for Whipp, but even Randolph took the lead and smashed In the first game of the tournament, the Durfee girls’ faced she couldn’t help Durfee’s hopes of a championship. The final score was Randolph 17, Durfee 5. BASEBALL 1—i ■—I he 1988 baseball team enjoyed great success, due to the great talent and the teams desire to win, LJ Despite slumping at the first part of the season, coach Ray Medeiros’ Hilhoppers qualified for the state tournament. The Hilltoppers were under great pressure as the season was coming to a close. The Toppers had to win It) out of the 11 remaining games to qualify. They did so by defeating Attleboro 4-1 in a suspense filled game and had one game to spare. The offense attack was led by Mitch Rogers and Chris Costa. They were right on target during season with strong hitting and excellent base-running, essential for a winning season. The team suffered a tremendous loss due to an injury to one of the key players, David Cote which caused him to sit most of the season. Pitchers Richard Kitchen, Costa, and Jeff Davis were the aces in the hole for the Hilltoppers, With several talented veterans return- ing, the Toppers are looking forward to this spring. Seniors expected back in the starting line-up include, Tony Elumba, Tim Furtado, Chris Costa, Tom Desnoyers, Richard Kitchen, Eric Furtado, and Kyle Kupiec. The team expects to improve their record immensely. RECORD 16-8 1988-1989 SEASON GIRLS TENNIS his year's girls’ tennis team had a tough season, finishing off with a record of 2 14. This year’s captain, Andrea Boucher, played well this season holding the num- ber one position for singles. Following Boucher were fellow seniors Joan Darcy and Amanda Golden, as con- tenders in the singles. Junior Tracy Souza and sophomore Audra Pontes had a terrific season playing doubles, along with the sizzling sister team of Michelle and Nicole Theberge. All of them will return next season. RECORD 2-14 1988- 1989 SEASON Also back for another season will be Colleen Sheehan, sophomore, and freshman Lauren Monchik, both looking forward to bright futures with Durfee tennis. The team opened with a win over Dighton-Rehoboth. Boucher, Darcy and Correiro each were victorious in the singles matches. Fol- lowing a solid win by Pontes and Tracy Souza in fist doubles, the Theberge sis- ters showed what family teamwork could do by posting a win in second doubles. Coach Jerry Valente said he is looking forward to the 1989 season, not only because of the strong returning squad but to the newly resurfaced tennis courts. BOYS TENNIS I I he Durfee tenniss team, hopeful from the start, have found that aall the wrinkles haven't quite been ironed out yet. Although the netmen havee put I I their heart into play, competitoors just seem to have the edge. St railing off on the right foot Durfee placed third in the annual jamboree at Somerset High School. John Pontes , co-captain and number one player, captured a point for the team, along with number 3 singles player Pat Mello and doubles combination Bill Asad and Chris Brennan. The true opener came when Durfee traveled to Falmouth to meet Falmouth High. This is when the gloom began to set in both in faces and weather.. Falmouth beat Durfee fourr matches to none and a thun- derstorm managed to destroy the hopes of the fifth game, where co-captain Roy Lopes was on a roll. Right before vacation there shined a glimpse of hopppe as Roy Lopes took a match in a losing effort against Barn- stable, 4-1. The next team to take a shot at Durfee was arc rival neighbors Bishop Connolly. The teamed rolled over Durfee 5-0. The players remained confident, however, as Ramsey Khoury showed when he jokingly said, We'r e not worried, we just haven't had a chance to warm up yet.” The team ended their season with a final record of 2-12. RECORD 1988-1989 SEASON The Durfee golfers finished their season with a record of 4-10-1. Coach Richard Roy had a young team last year with 5 out of 8 spots filled by fresh- men. This year, as more experi- enced sophomores the first four spots will be held by Doug Smith,Brandon Bouchard, Rob- bieMachadoandSteveMedeiros. Returning as cap- tain for the second year will be senior Matt Desma- rais in the fifth spot, foiled by Mike Hargraves,Mike Fitzgerald,Steve St. Pierre.Sean Whitty and Bridget Murphy. Due to graduation Durfee lost 3 players Jeff Tallman, Bob Fitzgerald and Dan Reitzas, which should not hurt the team drastically. Coach Roy stated, “ The 1989 varsity team is expecting to do much better in the win loss column.” Durfee should have a succesful season with the attitudes of the coach and team captain Matt Desinaris. The team should progres- sively improve as the younger players gain more ex- perience and work hard in the off season. RECORD 4-10-1 1988 -1989 SEASON CROSS COUNTRY nee again the girls cross country team claimed a 'Division II championship. Winning the division title is a perfect reward for the girls who have arTincredible season. This is their fifth straight championship year and also their thirtieth straight league meet __________________ victory since 1983, The girls defeated Dartmouth 41-16. Dartmouth was no competition for our Lady Toppers. For the second week in a row the trio of sophmores Jennifer ■■■■■■■ Bougie and Sue St. Laurent, and junior captian Lori Branco unbelievingly finished in a three-way tie for the first place. RECORD 1988-1989 SEASON They achieved this unuusual feat in a time oof 16:57. Megan McCloskey took fourth while Kara Brogan and Kellie Kirker claimed the sixth and seventh places. I feel great. I knew we could do it, was junior Kellie Kirker’s remark about the team’s championship. _____ The girls have been a great suprise H ft more like a shock!” stated coach ” ®Ozug. The Durfee community should be very proud of them. They’ve brought a lot of prestige to this school. These five girls,(three of whom were inexperienced prior to the season), have accomplished a lot for Durfee and her reputa- tion. OSS COUNTRY J he main ingredients for an outstanding season and Division Championship title seems to be the 1988-89 Durfee Cross Country team. Coach David Ozug having applied proper discipline and training to his runners has concocted the ultimate cross country team. On Wednesday October 19, 1988 the boys RECORD 6-7 cross country team were claimed the Division II champions. Taking their first championship ever they will share the title with their co-champions Connolly annd Dartmouth as a result of their 23-24 victory over the Dartmouth Indi- ans, The major contributors to the Topper win included junior Rene Gagnon and senior co-captain Doug Medeiros. 1988- 1989 SEASON attitude for the whole team. I knew we would come up on top.” Medeiros took runner-up honors while freshman Eric Bradbury and junior Jeff Lundstrum obtained fourth and fifth places. “Coach Ozug’s been working us real hard the past few weeks. I knew we'd kick butt! ,added sophomore Kraig Kupiec who finishes twelth “We’ve been striving for this victory for three years. We just missec it last year. The determined Topperettes then showed their determination by shutting out the Whalers 15-0, The final point was scored by Stephanie Valente, The final game was won by Durfee to end the match with the scoreboard reading 15-8. On Saturday night the volleyball team moved on for yet another tough game against Bishop Feehan. The first game of the night was the closest of the night ..[ with a final score of 16-14. Although the match ended with a disapointing loss for Durfee, the girls did the best they could by keeping up with the Shamrocks with the second and third games ending up very close, 15-12, and 15-10. Brigitte Plantewas the player of the first game, ending up with seven service points. In the third game Thompson put up a great opening fight with the toppers leading 5-0. Al- though Durfee began with the lead Feehan continued to score. Farquhar ended the scoring for Durfee with three points. FIELD HOCKEY i i he Girl's Varsity Field Hockey team coached by Nancy I Torpey and assistant coach George Moniz ended their season I with a disappointing 5-11-2 record. I I The team included many new talented players brought up from junior varsity. Sophomores Nikki Theberge, Lisa Hermengildo, and Gorretti Pacheco were major assetts to this year’s hockey team. The departing members include 13 seniors as well as 4 captains Lori Dubuque, Erin Sullivan, Karen Monde, and Jen Couineau. Other supportive members of the team include seniors, Jen Pereira. Lisa Vincellette, Lindsay Defarias, and Susar Boardman. As well as juniors Kelly Russell. Carla Silva, and Mind) Wentworth. Despite the difficult season, two of the Topper players were chosen for the Herald News All Star team. Monde and Pereira were honored for theii RECORD 5-11-2 1988 -1989 SEASON outstanding effort and ability throught the season. Pereira was also chosen for other state honors. The field hockey team is looking forward to a successful season and hoping for upcoming talent to play a key role. 116 FOOTBALL eptember 16th was opening day for the Durfee gridders, and without a doubt, they were hoping for a good start, but to no avail, the Taunton team came out ahead to the visiting Toppers, 25-8 in a very disappointing game, under the lights at Taunton. The Shamrocks of Bishop Feehan were the first home opponents, but one of the most difficult. The Shamrock wishbone team did away with whatever the Hilltoppers had planned by distroying our hopes, 42-18. The Bishop Stang Spartans came to Durfee. and they came out with the same results, a 28-0 victory. Between the First 3 games the Toppers had less than 100 yards rushing. Without a doubt, the Hilltoppers would be looking fora victory against equally ranked Attleboro. During the rescheduled game because of inclement weather, the Durfee gridders ran for a total of 172 yards, more than the first 3 game total, and got their first win 24-6. Coming off the exciting win over Attleboro, it made the trip to Somerset shorter, but the ride home was a little longer, as the Toppers dropped their 4th game out of 5 total with a final score of 20-14. During this game, the Hilltoppers ran the ball as they did against Attleboro, but against a much tougher team. Hoping better luck would fall apon them, the Toppers faced what many critics stated as a tough team”, but in Durfee minds Coyle Cassidy was just another number in the win column, with Durfee coming up with a 7- 6 victory. Falmouth was the next opponent, which from a critics point of view, Durfee would have to work twice as hard to beat them. The Hilltoppers ran every play in the book, but no avail, they were still handed another loss, 36-13. The gridders traveled to Barnstable for a night game with only one thing on their minds, a victory! The Toppers ran the first half like a professional team, and began to slump as the game went on letting the Barnstable team squeak by 28-0, as they looked towards Dartmouth for another victory before the big game agianst New Bedford. The green team of Dartmouth kept the Toppers on their feet throughout the entire game, with the Durfee players coming up with a great played game, but another loss, 14-0 at Dartmouth. All in all, the Varsity Hilltoppers team is going into New Bedford with a 2-7 record. Putting the rest of the season behind them, and getting down to football should bring the Toppers to a victory. ---- --——-----—, . RECORD 2-8 I 1988- 1989 SEASON SOCCER RECORD 17-0 —- fter being ranked number one in the state and A twentieth in the nation, the Durfee Boys Soccer j[ Team went into the S.M.C. South Sectional j—i Tournament with high expectations. The out- come, however, was not what they had hoped for. The reason for their disappoint- ment was Natrick High School. After 138 hard fought minutes of soccer, Natrick came out on top, knocking Durfee out of the tournament. The game was played at connolly High School, and anyone who saw it mm■■wmmmmmm would probably say that it was one of the best scholastic soccer games even in the history of the South Sectionals. After 80 minutes of scoreless play, they were forced to two overtime periods. The game was finally called due to darkness and it was decided that the teams would go into a “sudden death” the next day. This means they would have to play two more 20 1988- 1989 SEASON minute halves. Only one goal was scored during both days of play. Durfee goalie Joe Cordeiro did all that he could to make the score, but his best was not good enough. Durfee knew that it would be nearly impossible to come back because both teams were play- ing exceptionally well. “You gave it your best shot, you have just finished a season you can be proud of,” ptated proud but disapointed coach John antos to his Durfee team. It was a heart- reaker for the Hilltopers but they ac- epted their loss gracefully, showing ev- ryone what sportsmanship is all about. Seniors Mike Dias, Ed Silva, Jeff Melo, Bret Reis, Peter Sousa, Ralph Valencia, Rui Sardinha, will all be missed next year but coach Santos is still hopeful. Cordeiro and defensive standout Michael Sousa will be the nucleus of the team, while second leading scorer Ed Jacob wil also be returning. Over the season the eleven gymnasts that made up the team worked hard to acieve personal goals. Although they didn't win, many of the girls reached great heights, scoring in the 7-8 point range. Even those who didn't earn points have the feeling of a hard working team and shows alot of potential. Many of the younger members of the team have done well and will continue to do so throughout their high school years. This will help the team in years to come to be more victorious. This team is only losing 3 seniors to graduation Tanya Branco and Tracy Cahill and the only male participant on the team Michael Rossi. Other gymnasts that comprise the team are juniors Crystal Mercher and Theresa Da Silva, sophomors Amy Ben- net, Tracy Raposa, Norma Perry and I Darlene Pavoa who have gained much valuable experience for their upcoming seasons. Overall Coach Steve Maurer was pleased with the Toppers effort. Captains Tim Furtado, Chris Norman, and Russell Gagnon have take! the the responsiblility of being the team leaders. They used a defensive techinique of letting their goalie make a lot of saves. Despite the skaters’ efforts, Durfee was still defeated. Next, they took their show on the road to face Dartmouth. Somerset, and Taunton. Here the Durfee six came home with a 2-1 road record. Durfee next faced the powers from the Cape. Barnstable and Falmouth. Falmouth, the first victim, came into the game as heavy favorites. Taken the challenge of being underdogs, the Toppers rose to the oecassion. Leading 3-2 wit minutes left in the game, Falmouth came up with a freakish goal to tie it up 3-3, and that's where it stayed. Barnstable, another heavy favorite, was almost swept out from under their skates by a hard hitting Topper team, Barnstable retained the lead and won the game. The Durfee Hi 11 toppers finished the year with well earned record and will be remembered as a very respected team. 134 135 Wrestling he Durfee wrestling team posted an impressive 11-9 record, with several members going on to com pete in post-season play. Nagle Auditorium, The show was directed by Mrs. Jane Fiore- Bigelow. It featured Keith Waring as the awkward but loyal Seymour Krelloum and Alisha Chodkowski as sweet Audrey. Freshman Eddie Rocha portrayed Mr. Mushnik. the owner of the flower shop. Mrs. Fiore-Bigelow proudly stated that Eddie took one of the hardest roles of the play and presented it with a lot of poise. Todd Robinson played the voice of the plant, Audrey II. while Jay Dean worked as the puppeteer. Many felt that this duo made a great team, and their performance was magnificent. The Do-Wop Sisters were played by Liz Goulart, Robin Correira, Joanne Lagasse, Jen Valencourt, Carmen Pacheco, and Carmella Dixon. They not only narrated the play, but they puncuated it with musical selections. On the whole, the play was about a vicious plant that dominates the life of Seymour Krelloum, To sum it up, Liz Goulart proudly stated, I'm grateful for the tremen- dous turnout, which was unexpected. Also I think everyone did a great job. and I hope our next play is as much a success as this one, 179 President Helen Kuhn addresses Council Ms. Ann Marie Charrette helped with organizing the conference. 180 Students show interest in the topics discussed. Student Leaders Meet 'It proved to be a day to remember for Durfee and Fall River. and hopefully for all who attened.' -Helen Kuhn Student Government President “It was a suprise to everyone when Michael Herren sold the school at the Spring Student Government conven- tion” explained Student Government President Helen Kuhn, we went there with absolutely no intention to hold a convention of this size when we were driving to Cantin High School, hut it was a spontaneous suggestion that just took off,” On November 10, 1988, the Durfee Student Government hosted The Southeastern Mass. Conference for all the areas Student Governments. The day consisted of a breakfast to welcome the 80 different student governments, then an assembly where Kuhn welcomed the honored guests and the Student Governments. Dan Clark spoke on the subject of self belief and motivation. At that point, the first of three workshops began. The workshops were presented by teachers, administrators, elected officials, and students. They focused on student leadership, student rights and responsabilities, teenage issues, as well as special workshops for council presidents and advisors. At the end of the workshops lunch was served by the Durfee Student Government. “It proved to be a day to remember for Durfee and Fall River, and hope- fully one for all who attended,” Kuhn suggested. Among the guests were Superintendent John R. Correiro, Assistant Superintendent James M. Gibney. and Principal James S. Panos. 181 Students in their height of productivity. 182 Group of seniors ham it up for Follies, Erin Sullivan and Lori Bosi waiting 10 be called on stage. Choreographer Colleen Farrssey-Reitxas helps students prepare dance numbers. Senior Follies ''Seniors Go On Vacation was the theme that was chosen for the 1989 show. The basic ideas for skits came mainly from the students. As Mrs. Fiore-Bigelow noted. The most enjoyable skits in the past were made up by the students. The dates for this years production were March 3, 4, 10, and I 1. Sign-ups were in mid December. That list was used by Mrs. Fiore-Bigelow, along with choreographer, Colleen Farris- sey-Reitzas to place students into skits. Rehearsals started after the Christ- mas-New Year recess, two each week in January and three in February. The seniors traveled way out west in Rawhide, went on a Manhunt in the jungle and did the Mexican Hat Dance. Senior Follies gave this year's senior class a chance to meet new people, have fun with old friends and make their last year at Durfee one they will remember forever. It has become a tradition. Each year, I see a coming together of the class and a lot of new freindships made. -William J. Molloy Senior Vice Principal Chris Brennan. Rico Confoni. and Joe Viveiros enjoying the attention. What more could a team ask for? How about the Massa- chusetts Division I State Champion- ship? The finale to an awesome season, the Hilltoppers have done it once again. They have brought the second state title to Durfee in the last four years, and the fourth overall. The playoffs began with a bye for the toppers, this moved them into the south sectional quarter-final round. Irony was the deciding factor though in determiningwho Durfee would play. Arch-rival New Bedford would come to the Luke Urban Field House to clash with Durfee for the third time this year. Durfee then traveled to Brockton High School to play an underrated Boston English team. The verdict: Durfee by eight. Catholic Memorial was next on Durfee’s menu. C.M. was a team that people thought would be tough..,,it turned into a laughter. The verdict: Durfee by an incredible 24 pionts, and the South Sectional championship trophy. We re goin’ to the Garden ' was the motto for the next few days around Durfee. The opponent will be Lowell High School. Next stop for Durfee, the Worcester Centrum where Durfee defeated Chicopee Comprehensive in the final John Murray's good for two. minutes to win the state Division I crown. After a somewhat predictable '89 season the Toppers ended their regular play with a bang, first against New Bedford, then again bringing the crowd to their feet against Cambridge. This season has been one of record breaking memories for the Durfee team headed by co-captains Mike Herren and Judd McDonald. Not only has Herren hit the 1,000 point mark, but he has scored the most points in a game (51). The second half brought much of the same, until a run by Chicopee late in the fourth quarter. The two have led their team to a 44 game winning streak. As the remaining games became fewer the hopes of back to back championships became greater. The game against Madison Park, a lough Boston team was played at Brockton High School on March 8, 1989, ended on a successful note. This made the Toppers the South Sectional Champs for the third consecutive year. The next game was played at Northeastern University against Brockton High which resulted in another victory and a road trip to the Boston Garden. The Toppers tasted the sweetness of victory at the Garden when the fighting Toppers beat Cambridge in overtime. The team took their game on the road again , this time heading for the Worcester Centrum where Durfee repeated by capturing the state title against Springfield 82-74. 184 Mike Herren and Matt Attar talk to Tom Gibney from the press after their victory. Junior Prom It is always pleasant to see everyone dressed beautifully and hand- somely. It is even more pleasant to see people for social reasons -Margaret Curt Senior Class Advisor On May 5. the Class of 1989 enjoyed their Junior Prom at the Venus de Milo Restaurant. Whether arriving by car or chauffered limou- sine, every student put away their sneakers and jeans and traded them in for elegant dresses, or jackets and lies. The Venus provided a delicious choice of prime rib or baked stuffed shrimp, both of which were a big success. As a rememberance of the night key chains and charms were distributed. D.J. Kevin Medeiros provided the music as the Class of '89 danced the night away. In the spirit of togetherness, the class chose Lean On Me by Club Noveau as their theme song. When it was over, everyone looked back on the night as one that will not be for- gotten. 187 88 Homecoming Once again, 59 girls from 45 dubs competed for thetitle of Homecoming Queen on November 25, 1988. Tanya Branco, representing Student Gover- ment. was crowned this year's winner. The committee for the 10th Annual Homecoming Ball was Puttin' on the Ritz. The Field House was deco- rated in keeping with the theme. The Durfee Band Aides, parents of band members, formed a decorating committee at their first meeting of the school year. These parents met twice a week at the home of Jeff Weissman, publicity manager of the group. Nominees had to be good citizens, must pass all courses, and not cut classes. Each girl who was nominated to represent a club attended the last home football game on October 29, At half- time of this game, all the girls were introduced as candidates. Voting for the I lomecoming Queen took place on November 16. All students were eligible to vote. In addition to the ticket sales, there was also an Ad Book. Many busi- nesses, families and friends took advantage of the opportunity to wish the candidate of their choice success. This past summer, what was the old Durfee Hilltop room underwent construction to become the new Durfee Publications Center. It has more than modernized the facilities in which we produce the Durfee Hilltop. Phoenix Nest, and the Record Book, as well as ihe Program of Studies, Dialogue and other publications. Room 289 consists of a computer lab, library, lay- out center and lecture area. These and many other aspects of the room, help to create a professional at- mosphere for inspiring the minds of young student journalists. 193 Durfee Hilltop For more than a century, the Durfee Hilltop staff has supplied its students and faculty with an informative and entertaining newspaper. This student run and student financed tabloid has recently taken an initiative step into the fore front of technology. This has been as transitional year for our publication. We have switched from traditional typesetting and paste-up to desk-top publishing on the Macintosh computers. Although this change was a difficult one, the staff has adjusted well, and is now able to produce a paper in much less time. We hope that future student journalists will build from this foundation and carry the Durfee Hilltop to another century of excellence. Editor Michelle L. Theberge News Editor: Michaela M.
