Text from Pages 1 - 234 of the 1985 volume:

Our junior year was one of excitement. Durfee High School put Fall River in the spot light as the Toppers and Topperettes won big on the field of athletics. During the fall the football team gave New Bedford its Waterloo on the grid iron. The cold weather did not slow the Toppers down as the basketball team won the state championship. Durfee’s winning streak continued into the spring as the girls softball team hit its way into the State Finals. We were proud of Durfee and its athletes. OUR JUNIOR YEAR ______IN REVIEW ii-Prologui OUR STATE OUR CITY OUR SCHOOL MASSACHUSETTS HOME OF DURFEE Prologue-iii 1982-1983 A YEAR OF AWARENESS The world in which we existed had become a boiling pot of violence. We became aware of the ever present threat of hostilities that could easily erupt into a full scale war. Not only had we become more involved in our academics, we became more informed and concerned about the world around us. The cold war went in to a deep freeze as relations between America and Russia worsened. Fight- ing was still going on in the Middle East, South America and Asia. From the shooting down of a Korean jet liner to the downing of our jets over Lebanon, the killing and the destruc- tion became a common theme for newsmen. Television added a touch of reality to a nuclear war with The Day After, As our junior year came to a close we knew that to be aware of and concerned about the events around us was good. But, we also knew that such events could not alter our personal goals. We wanted to make the most of our high school years and to become peaceful, yet productive members of society. A YEAR OF TENSION Durfee spirit engulfed the Venus on May 17,1984, as the junior class held its junior prom. All who attended contributed joy and laughter to the festivities. It was Durfee’s juniors do- ing their thing in Durfee style. JUNIOR PROM vi-Prologue Prologue-vii The senior portraits that appear on the pages of this book are those of our friends and classmates. Some will quickly be forgot- ten while others will not. Each portrait is a separate entity, each face having its own unique smile, dimple, lines and or sparkle. It will be these faces that when looked at tomorrow will enable us to link the past with the future. We will remember tomor- row how we looked today. Angela Helen M. Durfee High School of Fall River. From the sound of the home- room tone at 8:00 A.M. to the dismissal tone at 2:03 P.M., we kept on the move. The days went by so fast we naci trouoie keeping up with them, it was as if each week consisted of only a Monday and a Friday. Now for many of us the school week has been re- placed by the work week. SENIORS 84 SENIORS THE MEMORIES ARE LEFT There are no more Durfee High school days to rush through, to talk about or to complain about. All that is left are the memories. We should be grateful for the memories, for there are some who do not even have them. 85 Our junior prom was more than just another high school dance, it was the class of 1985 jubilantly celebrating the end of three years and the start of our last year as Durfee students. There would be other dances, but the memory of our first big high school social has become one of many fond memo- ries of our high school days that will be cherished. “AGAINST ALL ODDS” Compliments of SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEMBER EDWARD LAMBERT We returned from summer vacation knowing that our final year was upon us... we were seniors. For some the senior year marked the final year of school, while for others it was the Final launching stage prior to college lift off. Autumn found us filling out registration cards and schedules . . . taking SAT’s and sending out college applications. The volleyball team had a winning season while the football team hit the dirt. Christmas came and went with little fanfare. We re- turned to cold classrooms, floods and a new tardiness to class policy. National and world events made big headlines. The presidential campaign saw a new beginning for blacks and women. The Reagan and Bush ticket blew aside the Mondale and Ferraro ticket. Indira Gandhi was assasinated in India while England’s Margaret Thatcher almost met her Waterloo. The ice thawed a little between Russia and the United States. OUR SENIOR YEAR HR Good luck to the class of “85” — LONG PARENT INSURANCE AGENCY, INC. INDIRA GANDHI . . . ASSASINATED Spring brought with it an air of anticipation and excitement as we approached our senior prom and graduation. The big count down had begun. We prepared ourselves for our big exit not only from high school, but from adolescence to adulthood. Some of us complained for the past four years that we could not wait to leave. Now that the time had arrived, some of the noisey ones had become quiet. PRESIDENT REAGAN . . . ANOTHER TERM 89 GOOD LUCK DEBBIE COSTA . . . LOVE MOM DAD SENIOR POWER.....RIGHT ON! Four school years, 720 school days, how they passed so quickly. We realized as we took our final glance at Durfee that the past four years represented an im- portant segment of our adolescent cy- cle. Hopefully our future accomplish- ments will prove that our high school years were spent wisely in preparing ourselves for those future challenges. 90 THE CLASS OF 1985 Angela ABARCA Eddie Raymond AFFONSO Helen Marie AGUIAR Lisa Marie AGUIAR Joao M. YOUNG ADMINISTRATION FACULTY To The Class of 1985: Congratulations to all of you on the occasion of your high school graduation. You carry the best wishes of all of us in the Public Schools for a successful and happy life. Your years at Durfee will always be cherished memories for you. The lessons learned, the experiences gained, the friendships made are but the foundation of your future. Remember those who helped you and guided you along the way - parents, teachers, peers. Do honor to them and to yourselves by drawing upon what you have learned at Durfee as the spring- board to a fuller and richer life. God bless all of you! John R. Correiro Superintendent SUPERINTENDENT JOHN R. CORREIRO OUR ADMINISTRATION Whether you realize it or not, you have survived the dire predic- tions made by George Orwell in 1984, and, having passed through that fearsome year apparently unscathed by Big Broth- er, are commencing upon the bright road of promise and success. At least, let us hope that you were unscathed and untainted by the kind of thought control depicted in Orwell’s novel. Has your education at Durfee helped you to think independent- ly? Have you used every opportunity to raise questions, to seek out answers? Have you stretched your mind to its greatest ca- pacity? Have you steeled yourself against the Big Brothers of the future by becoming a thinker and not a blind follower? If you have answered the preceding questions in the negative, then make your first step on the bright road to success an affir- mative one. Whether you are going to work or going to college, be a thinker in the best sense of the word, for the person who pursues his thoughts logically and with care and attention to fact is truly the educated person who will lead and not blindly follow. As I watch you moving in to your future endeavors, I am re- minded of that song in Godspell, “You Are the Light of the World.” Truly I believe that you are, and if you are educated in the sense that I describe, that light will indeed be a bright one. Winning the Southeastern Mass. Conference Division One crown, the Durfee volleyball team proved themselves to be unbeatable during the regular season. Two of many outstanding matches were those against Somerset and Westport. Durfee scored its 13th victory by beating Somerset. Somerset, the only team to take the Topper- ettes to three games, bowed to Durfee’s tal- ent. Colleen and Cathy Karl along with Ka- ren Silvia poured on the hitting off of Fran Cabral’s sets. The girls continued to show their style in the final match of the season against Westport. Again Cathy Karl, Colleen Karl and Karen Silvia were strong. Addition- al strength came from the Topperettes’ back row players: Marybeth Benevides, Debbie Rusin and Fran Cabral. Delia Viera was at the net in the second game to make her con- tribution. This season was an exciting one for Coach Valente, because it represented the first unbeaten season he has had in five years. GOOD GOING COACH VALENTE AND TOPPERETTES. TOPPERS The boys cross country team had a winning season under the leadership of coach Dave Ozug. The harri- ers ran hard and long to win the annual Fall River scholastic city championship over Connolly and Di- man. Co-captain Bob Camara set his third course record of the season with a 14 minutes, six second clocking over the 2.5 mile course. Co-captain Mike Beauchemin also showed his style by moving from fifth to second place in the final half mile to give the Toppers the win. Co-captains Mike Beauchemin and Bob Camara not only excelled in the scholastic city championship, they performed well in many other meets, many times running neck to neck. Durfee was going strong to complete an unbeaten season until they were knocked from the unbeaten ranks by Di- man. Bob Camara and Brian Corey had finished first and third respectively, but Diman took the other top four places. It was a good season for Coach Ozug and his Toppers. Thanks Toppers for giving Durfee an exciting cross country season. FALL RIVER CHAMPIONSHIP C R O S s c 0 u N T R Y TOPPERETTES The girls cross country team, also under the able leadership of coach Ozug, stayed one step ahead of the Toppers by finishing the season with an unble- mished 7-0 record. Because they ran hard and never gave up, the Topperettes had the distinction of cap- turing the Southeastern Massachusetts Conference crown by besting Feehan 26-31. There were many bright spots during the season, but one of the bright- est was Sarah Wilcox’s record-breaking performance in the meet against Dartmouth. Sophomore Sarah Wilcox chopped 20 seconds off a decade-old course record with her 17:04 time over the 2.6 mile jaunt. Additional talent came from captain Shannon Hathaway and Cathy Gillete who did their share of huffing and puffing to put Durfee in the win colume. Coach Ozug’s Topperettes gave Durfee a winning season that the fans could really cheer about. With a lot of good talent returning for the next season, Dur- fee’s competitors better do some overtime in the area of running. The season ended gloriously with four decided victories over Attleboro (9-3), Somerset (10-0), Diman (3-1), and Connolly (5-0) and 2 selections and 2 nominations to the Conference All-Star Team. Also, the record qualified the team for post-season tournament play in which our school was represented with class, dignity, and style. With no seniors present, the team was a young one. However, the maturity of these young atheletes was evident both on the field; as the team played with a style that was calculated, skilled, and aggres- sive; and off the field; as the team developed their outward appearance. Talent was in abundance. Captain Leo Sousa taught his team good sportsmanship and drive by his example. Louis Pacheco’s unquestionable skill was recognized by the Bos- ton Globe's All-Star Team. Tony Reis was a continual powerhouse as the team’s leading scorer. Frank Mateus, a defenseman, was the backbone of the team. Frosh goalie Rick Dias’s 5 shutouts in the 16 game season showed his great potential. Also performing for the team in style were Louis Martins, Tony Arruda, Paul Pacheco, Paul DaSilva, Joe Dias and Joe Carvalho. There was a new Topper Spirit in this year’s soccer team that Nelson Paiva, who resigned five games into the season to take advantage of a job opportunity, and John Santos, the new coach, had developed. Coach Santos felt that this “positive winning attitude” made the Topper’s strong record possible. This may be the attitude that may guide next year’s team to the state division championship position. As coach Santos stated, “a goal that seems attainable.” Leo SOUSA, Captain 123 Compliments of STURBRIDGE RESTORATION BUILDING CO. 1926 No. Main St. - 679-5707 VARSITY FOOTBALL The Toppers, under new coach Tom Botelho, had a frustrating season. From the first game of the season, played on a rain soaked field, to the last game, played on Thanksgiving day, the Toppers could not score a victory. Although the scoreboard indicated defeat, the Toppers were winners in the hearts of their many loyal fans. Even in defeat'a team can earn respect. In the game against Boston College High, the Toppers got their offense on track and showed improvement in all facets of their game. Senior Mark Gagliardi completed 11 of 18 passes for 223 years and two touchdowns. His favorite target was sophomore Mitch Lown. Also showing his aggressiveness as running back was Bryan Palumbo. The new Durfee defense (six-man front) was active in halting the Boston College High Eagles from two go-ahead drives. Another close game was the Somerset game. Somerset, the favorite, survived a giant scare in the last two min- utes of the game. Durfee had limited Somerset to just 58 yards in the second half. The season ended on a negative note with New Bedford defeating Durfee. There is a trite expression that is used when a team suffers a losing season, “there is next season”. However, there will be no next season for the Seniors. They gave their best in aggressive spir- it for their school. This tradition can be traced as far back as the 1940's when 13,000 fans would gather at Boston Garden to cheer on the Hilltoppers to their championship victories. This tradition was upheld by this year's Hilltoppers through their devotion, spirit, and sportsmanship. The Hill- toppers continue to draw crowds that some colleges do not. Coach Karam showed no difficulty in rising above the loss of five starters as he guided the Hilltoppers to a season-opening victory against East Provi- dence. In one of John D’Ambrosio’s finest games, Durfee attained a 450th win for coach Karam in his twenty-fifth year of coaching. Paul Donnelly led the team in their next performance, a victory over Feehan, coming back from an injury. But as the school rejoiced in these wins and in the team’s 10-1 record the anticipation built up for the first confron- tation with arch-rival New Bedford. The result was a 59-53 defeat. But the last word would be Durfee’s whose auspicious season would come to a close with a win over the Whalers by a score of 73-66, with the special touches of juniors Mike Smith and Skip Karam. Seniors Paul Donnelly and John D’Ambrosio, co-captains, and Pauli Galvin have done “a ter- rific job”, praised Karam. They will now lead the Hilltoppers to tourna- ment play. Coached by Beverly Cambra, the Topperettes ended the season with a 5-13 overall record. Constantly giving their best the Topperettes won some hard-fought games, while losing some heart breakers. Playing impressively, the Topperettes beat arch-rivals New Bedford and Somerset, In the game against Somerset, Cathy Sousa scored a needed 10 while Cathy Karl and Fran Cabral connected for 9 and 8 points respectively. Adding an additional 7 points was Lisa Neves. Everything clicked together in the game against New Bedford. Having an impressive evening was Cathy Sousa with 19 points. Following with 12 points was Aileen Donnelly and Lisa Neves and Carolyn with 8 and 6 points respectively. The 46-44 loss to Wareham cast a disappointing shadow over the season. However, Lisa Neves, Cathy Karl and Beth Hathaway lightened some of that shadow with some good plays on the court. The Topperettes closed the season on a positive note by beating Wareham 59-53. Running the mile with speed was Bob Camara while Mike Beauchemin took control in the 2-mile competition. Andy Desrosiers and Tim Hill carried on with Durfee’s spirit in the relay. The track team might have placed fourth in league meet competition, but they placed first in the hearts of their supporters. 151 Compliments of SWIDEY’S VARIETY - BEST OF LUCK! OOW dSOOHS) EDITOR’S MESSAGE Thinking back to our first days at Durfee, we remember a time filled with excitement, apprehension and confusion. As freshmen we encountered new experiences and new challenges. The mere process of changing classes was an adventure in itself. The corridors were like mazes, often leading us all in circles. As we traveled these hallways, passing hundreds of strange faces, we wondered if we would ever feel at home. As the days and weeks followed, however, our strolls from class to class became less troublesome and more pleasurable. In these few minutes of passing we filled the hallways with laughter, smiles, secrets, and friendly hellos. Thanks to everyone who contribut- ed to our book of memories. Thank you staff members, and especially Tim, John, Wendy for your extra special efforts, I thank Loring Stu- dio who was always ready with cam- era in hand to take those exciting pictures. I also thank Norval Gar- nett of Jostens Yearbook Company for his helpful assistance. As a class we owe our sincerest appreciation and thanks to Mr. R. W. Pineault, Without his devotion, talents, and endless efforts this yearbook would not exist. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE RACHEL MC DONALD, EDITOR As we leave Durfee we must say goodbye to many friends and good times. However, we take with us a treasure chest filled with many spe- cial memories. Hopefully, this year- book will enable you to relive those exciting moments and remember those sincere friends that were so much apart of our four years at B.M.C. Durfee High School. I hope that you achieve all of your goals and overcome those challenges that await us. Remember! Durfee alumni are number one. 192 SENIOR POWER AT I.M.C. DURFEE HIGH SCHOOL OF FALL RIVER 194 OUR FOUR YEAR HITCH AT DURFEE WAS A TIME OF PROGRESSING. WITH ENDURANCE AND DETERMINATION, OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, WHETHER LARGE OR SMALL, WERE A STEP AHEAD FOR EACH ONE OF US. 195 We came to Durfee with different hopes and dreams. But, we also came together in unity for the purpose of friendship and learning. Our attitudes varied from rebellious noncomformist to conservative enthusiast. Whether we devoted our time and effort to school or community activities, we sought esteem income over financial. 196 DIFFERENT HOPES DIFFERENT DREAMS 197 198 PERSONALITIES Interacting personalities create spirit in a high school. We, the class of ’85, were rich with diverse personalities: enthusiastic extroverts, shy introverts, serious intellectuals, creative artists and musicians, aggressive athletes, class clowns, and well-rounded achievers. Our personalities were heterogeneous but our school spirit was homogeneous all the way! 199 BEING OURSELVES AT DURFEE WE SPOKE OUR OWN LANGUAGE WHILE WE CHERISHED OUR OWN GOALS. WE KNEW THAT MANY TIMES OUR TEACHERS DISAGREED WITH AND DISAPPROVED OF SOME OF OUR CLICHES, HOWEVER, MANY OF OUR TEACHERS MELLOWED AS THEY THOUGHT BACK TO THEIR YOUTHFUL DAYS OF ADOLESCENCE AND THEIR ADOLESCENT CLICHES. 201 At Durfee we were not blocked off from reality. Our teachers taught us to keep those doors to the world open and those paths to the future clear. By doing so we found ourselves united with the rest of the community, a community that we belonged to. 202 OUR YEARS AT DURFEE NOT A DREAM BUT A REALITY 203 OUR SCHOOL DAY . . . STUDENT LIFE During our senior year those extra moments dur- ing and after school became prized moments. We found those minutes between classes a time for friends, friendly glances and friendly 204 conversations. ACADEMICS . . . CLUBS . . . SPORTS STUDENT LIFE After school our freedom widened and we scattered from band practice to sports, from dates to meet- ings. For many the challenges of the day continued into the evening with time spent on home work. 205 OUR FOUR YEARS AT DURFEE 206 ___A TIME OF AWARENESS We involved ourselves with the issues, confronted prob- lem situations, and sought answers to our questions. Our high school days have ended, but hopefully we will still get involved, confront problems and seek answers. 207 GOOD-BYE DURFEE WHERE HAVE THE YEARS GONE? WHAT WE THOUGHT WOULD PASS SLOWLY, PASSED EVER SO QUICKLY. WHERE WILL WE BE AND WHAT WILL WE BE DOING WHEN WE AGAIN GLANCE THROUGH THE PAGES OF OUR YEARBOOK? ■ ENCORE OUR LAST HURRAH____SENIOR FOLLIES 3H00H3 nnnn pvT? rurpwT? HERE HAVE THE YEARS GONE? HAT WE THOUGHT WOULD PASS OWLY, PASSED EVER SO QUICKLY. HERE WILL WE BE AND WHAT ILL WE BE DOING WHEN WE AIN GLANCE THROUGH THE U)ES OF OUR YEARBOOK? HOI r 209 We took to the stage, making it our turf for the last two weekends in March. On opening night as the lights dimmed and the audience looked to- wards the stage in anticipation of what was to come, we prepared ourseleves to commence an adventure that had been brewing for four years. The curtin went up and there was a muscial ex- plosion as the class of ’85 began SENIOR FOLLIES. 211 WE COMBINED OUR TALENTS, DESIRES AND AGGRESSIVE SPIRIT INTO A POWERFUL SINGING AND DANCING GROUP. THE MANY HOURS WE ALLOCATED TO REHEARSING WERE LONG AND TIRESOME, BUT WE GAVE OUR ALL SO THAT THOSE WHO CAME TO SEE US WOULD BE ENTERTAINED AND PLEASED WITH WHAT THEY SAW AND HEARD. WORKING TOGETHER GIVING OUR BEST Jane Fiore Colleen Farrissey William Molloy GIVING ENDLESSLY JANE FIORE COLLEEN FARRISSEY WILLIAM MOLLOY We were a success becasue our di- rectors were a success. Jane Fiore, Colleen Farrissey and Wil- liam Molloy did more than di- rect, they shared their talents and enthusiasm with us. Thank you Ms. Fiore, Ms. Farrissey and Mr. Molloy for being you, and making our senior follies the best. 214 AND TAPPING IN THEIR SEATS. 215 SENIOR FOLLIES SUCCESSFUL ENJOYABLE MEMORABLE GOOD-BYE DURFEE Now that Senior Follies were finished, the class of ’85 was ready to say its final good-bye.
