O oo VO — MDSSWHTirilM PRESERVING THE PAST IN OUR MINDS____OUR PHOTO ALBUM OF DAYS AT DURFEE m z c A ONE WAY ROAD There’s a set rule about the road of life, it moves us ahead, not backwards. The bonds of friendship, the smiling faces and the free spirit of adolescence will soon be a part of a road once traveled, the road of high school. MOVING AHEAD 2 3 THERE WAS A DAY WHEN WE WOULD MEET BEFORE SCHOOL. THE SOUND OF OUR CHATTER AND LAUGHTER COULD BE HEARD IN THE HALLWAYS. THERE WAS A DAY THERE WAS A TIME THERE WERE FRIENDS NOW THERE ARE MEMORIES There was a time when we could share our joy and sadness with a friend, A school day friend was one that listened with sincerely when a receptive ear was needed when a comforting word did more than any wonder drug. Now there are memories lingering in our minds. Some time some place we will venture back, the memories being our link to the past. 5 b A photo can capture many moods . . . . many expressions. We experienced many moods and displayed many expressions while we traveled those B.M.C. Durfee hallways of learning. As we look back, however, those moods of laughter and warmth will stand out in our thoughts. THOSE FRIENDLY MOODS THOSE WARM EXPRESSIONS 7 ■1 The junior prom.........having fun as a class. Dancing and laughing it up was the order of the night at the Coachman Res- taurant. We celebrated the end of three years of high school in B.M.C. Durfee style. A NIGHT OF FUN A NIGHT OF FOND MEMORIES -- A “WE’VE GOT TONIGHT” 0-ZC - i- BMCD BMCD We took pride in our school and what it represented. With school spirit we demonstrated that pride by getting involved in extra curricular activities while doing our best on the field of academics. We tackled our school day with zest, knowing that by preparing today, wc would increase our chances for more success tomorrow. OUR SCHOOL 10 SO MUCH PRIDE SO MUCH SPIRIT SO MUCH DEVOTION 11 A CHOSEN PATH ____TO NEW HORIZONS A Future Road Leading To An Unknown Place Awaits Us. 12 For some the road will be smooth and straight while for others the bumps and curves of reality will be encountered. The new horizons that await us can never be totally overcome, but old memories of friends, moments, and Durfee itself will be a comfortable refuge to seek out when all appears out of reach. 13 Nostalgically we will recall when we used to pass down the hallways of Durfee, wrapped in our everyday routine of classes and homework. Our thoughts used to be scattered, yet we found comfort in being surrounded by a tradition that had been in existence since 1887, OUR HAPPY SCHOOL DAYS REMEMBERING THEM ALWAYS 15 HIGH SCHOOL TOGETHERNESS ___QUITE UNIQUE Future friends will be made but the simplicity and sincerity of our high school friends .... memories. DURFEE DRAMA CLUB 104 OUR SCHOOL YEARS COMING TO AN END Twelve years of schooling are finally coming to an end. As graduation approaches we ask ourselves if we will be part of the generation that will continue the rapid rate of change that presently exist in the world with the power to destroy itself. Hopefully we will have the wits and courage to condemn, not promote, the corruption that seems to be so deeply present in our society today. Twelve years, 144 months, is a long time. Our future roles and accomplishments will determine if we made the most of our school years. Through elementary, middle, and high school we matured, growing mentally and physically. We are ready to tackle what ever might challenge us. Who knows, we may be the generation to do it all. 5 HOSTAGES RETURN HOME REAGAN......PRESIDENT FRESHMEN September 7, 1983, we make our fanfare entrance i Durfee. Our confused state during which we learn adjust, is short lived. Old friends are seeked out wt new friends are made. We learn to interpret a rotat schedule, block out an overworked intercom, and hi patience for those slow moving lunch lines. The wo around us remains in an active state as always. Jc Lennon, a Beatle star is shot while entering his N York appartment. Ronald Reagan moves Jim Carter out of the White House. The hostages reti from Iran to a jubilant America. On telivision Dai and Hill Street Blues are entertaining many peop The warm days that faded into winter return in M Our freshman year is looked back at as one of grc ing, adjusting, and learning. Sophomore year here come! 106 Compliments of the B.M.C. HILLTOP. SOPHOMORES at happened to summer??? We return with a de- to learn .... to progress. As sophomores we find teachers expecting more......we do more to pare for tomorrow. Durfee is dedicated .... Ken- y visits BMCD. Teachers follow a “work to rule isev .... senior follies is put on hold. Fall River ergoes a face lifting . , . , main street gets a new c. A fire destroys Notre Dame Church. From the ion’s capital comes words of encouragement, while ;rest rates reach new highs and the number of ployed workers reach new lows. The world mourns assasination of President Sadat of Egypt. Hey! I someone mention summer? Two years gone..... ► years to go. Juniors .... All the way! 1981 - 1982 NOTRE DAME .... GONE PRESIDENT SADAT___ SHOT Compliments of ANDERSON LITTLE-FALL RIVER BEDFORD STREET BREZHNEV DIES JUNIORS Back again .... we finally made it to flex. For many it is a year of PSAT’s, driving lessons, and our first big dance, the Junior Prom. Our class had decreased in numbers but our spirit and desire for success had become stronger. Turkey day . . . . another loss. The final curtin fell on Ingrid Bergman and Henry Fonda, while Russia lost Leonid Brezhnev and Monaco lost Princess Kelly. On Golden Pond and ET were drawing them in at the movies while at home, cable was in great demand. The Junior Prom — enjoyed by all at the Coachmen in Tiverton, R. I. June already .... our last year awaits us. The class of “84” is about to become a reality. 1982 - 1984 ET..........GOING HOME 108 Compliments of the B.M.C. Durfee H. S. MUSIC DEPARTMENT 109 fer . Compliments of the 1984 Senior Prom Committee no “WE’VE GOT TONIGHT” LAUGHING The Cinderella Room at the Coachman Restaurant in Tiverton R.L swayed to the notes of romantic songs and shook to the beat of rock on the night of our Junior Prom, The prom was more than a dance, it was us, the class of “84” doing its thing with style. m SENIORS THE DAY AFTER. . . . WATCHED BY MANY TENSION IN KOREA MISSLES IN EUROPE Our senior year. . . . thinking it would never arrive.....now gone, belonging to our past. Between worrying about college applications, yearbook payments and who our senior prom date will be, our last year at Durfee is a busy one. The first term drive for those impressive grades to accompany our college applications gives us little time for other activities. Turkey day brings cause for celebration as the Hill- toppers beat the Whalers on the grid iron in the annual Thanksgiving Football Game. World events, however, do not give us much cause for celebration. From the shooting down of a Korean jet liner over the Pacific to our jet fighters being shot down over Leba- non, world tension mounts. Our adolescent school world is surrounded by people hating people......people killing people. On televi- sion The Day After spells out clearly the dangers of nuclear war. Measuring time for caps and gowns arrives........our time for exiting is near. A new class will take our place in the hallways and classrooms of Durfee. Ready or not world, the class of 1984, for better or worst, is joining you. 112 OUR LAST ADOLESCENT HOORAH . . . HIGH SCHOOL THE CLASS OF 1984 Beverly ADAM Christine M. AGUIAR Lisa M. SPORTS Co-Captain Jim POOESKY Sporting the best record in the history of Durfce cross country, this year's team had a tremendous season. Coach Dave Ozug led the team to an almost perfect season, recording 11 wins and one loss. Like last year, the loss came from Bishop Feehan by one point, thus eliminating the chance to capture the division crown. Running in the top spot was junior Mike Beauchemin, who showed excellent performances throughout the season as he broke the Durfee course record by one second, running the 2.75 mile loop in 14:03. Bob Camara, also a junior held the second position and veter- an co-captains Greg Rodrigues and Jim Podesky were third and fourth respectively. Rounding out the varsity squad were sophomores Norm Dumont, Jim Wilcox, and Brien Corey. Freshman standout Sarah Wilcox paced the Topperettes as she was undefeated in dual meet competition. Sarah was fol- lowed by Jill Hathaway, Brenda Piela, Cathy Gillette, Chris Quinn, and Shannon Hathaway. By giving their best the Top- pers and the Topperettes made the 1983 Cross Country season an exciting one. 118 CROSS COUNTRY CROSS COUNTRY CITY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP A major accomplishment by this year’s team was the winning of the first annual City Cross Country Championship, The three teams which made up the meet were Durfee, Diman, and Bishop Connolly. By winning, Durfee received individual medals and a silver plated cup, donated by Judy St Hilaire. The cup will remain at Durfee until the team records a loss at this meet within the next two years. 119 Compliments of the Durfee H. S. CHEERLEADERS. STATE CLASS MEET ... An unfortu- nate occurance during the season was the tragic death of teammate Steve Frascatore. The team dedi- cated this year's season to Steve, and decided to have a trophy presented in his name. The greatly im- proved league record of 4-1-3 (win- tie-loss) can be attributed to the coaching of Nancy Torpey and the determination and leadership of eleven seniors. Captains Tracy Burke, Francine Phenix, Lori Mello, and Claudia Salvo, forwards Alison Hornsby, Elly Wrobleski, and Jenni- fer Wilkinson, and defensive players Carolyn Sclleck, Cathy Walsh, Rosemary Rockett, and Lucy Pa- checo all contributed to the unprec- edented victories over New Bedford, Westport, and Fairhaven. The con- sistantly strong defense of junior goalie Betsy Kiley was instrumental in the team’s second place league finish, as were the efforts of juniors Andrea Benevides, Chris Phenix, Missy Alves, Rachel McDonald, and Rachel Wong. The Durfee Volleyball Team under coach Gerry Valente ended its highly successful season with a 16-2 (win- loss) record. The season was filled with many accomplishments. It was the first time in Durfee’s history that the power-house Topperettes entered the finals of the SEMC tournament. The Topperettes lost to Quincy in a hard-fought hcartbreaker. The high point of the season was defeating league rival Case in an exciting three-game match (15-11, 12-15, 15-1). In the final game of the match co-captain Andrea Costa served 8 points and junior Fran Cabral served 6 points, while co-captain Kirsten Sullivan and junior Karen Silvia had a potent hitting game. Seniors Brenda Millerick and Liz Karam aced the defense with some fine back line play. The team was a working unit throughout the entire season. Such was illustrated by their accomplishment of sharing the Division-One League Title with Case. Andrea, Kirsten, Karen and Liz led the front line play throughout the season by spiking and dunking some fine sets from juniors Cathy and Andrea. Seniors Kelly Fontaine, Sharlene Dusoe, and junior Anne Collins also displayed some style at the net. Leading the back row defense with much hustle were senior Brenda Millerick, juniors Karl, Marybeth Bcnevides, and Kara Harrington. An electrifying win was the 87-79 victory over New Bedford. In this meet Durfee held a six point edge going into the final event. Good swimming on the part of Mike Hartnett and Randy Mayall, however, kept New Bedford from tieing the score. The meet against Duxbury Knights was also a thrilling victory with Durfee’s comc-from-behind 85-84 win. Under the watchful eyes and careful guidance of Coach Sally Smith, the Toppers were molded into an aggressive competitor. For Paul Hartnett, Ed Smith, Randy Mayall, Jim Khoury, Mike Garant, and Mike Hartnett the 1984 season marked the end of a four year experience with the B.M.C. Durfee High School Boy’s Swim Team. Swimming, which began at Durfee in 1978, is a fairly new sport. In 1980, with the arrival of this year’s seniors, the team began to flourish. The senior group brought talent and most important, team spirit. Everyone on the team contributed in their own way during a meet and every victory was a team victory while every loss was a team loss. One of the most exciting highs of the season was the 58-54 tri- umph over New Bedford H.S. played on the Whalers' home court early in the season. This victory ended a five-year “hex against the Whalers. As coach Karam stated, “any time we beat New Bedford it's got to feel great. Throughout the season three seniors were active in scoring those winning baskets for Durfee. The senior trio, consisting of Paul Hart, Brian O'Neil, and Nick Salmon, swished in many points with ease and beauty. As this was not enough, additional power was provided by sen- ior guard Robert Hargraves, who sank a career high 19 points in the game against New Bed- ford, and guard Vic Pereira, who also turned in an all-star performance during the New Bedford game. Joe Stanton gave his most and displayed his ability in clutch situations. Although a 9-9 record might be taken for mediocri- y, this could not be further from the truth. Excitement prevailed n every contest as the girls dropped many heartbreaking games, 5 overtime losses and 4 one point decisions. Highlighting the season however, was the satisfaction of defeating New Bedford wice. This was quite an accomplishment when one considers that t had been 7 years since the Topperettes had emerged victorious. Senior guards Andrea Costa and Kelly Landry provided a one- wo scoring punch for the Topperettes. Their backcourt speed md ball handling skills earned them respect throughout the eague. Juniors Anne Collins, Lisa Neves and Sophomore Kathy Jousa did a fine job on the boards, while juniors Fran Cabral and Cathy Karl moved the ball well at the guard positions. This re- cord was not an indication of the cali- ber of wrestler that the team possessed, but of the strength of Durfee's oppo- nents. Probably the most demanding sport at Durfee, wrestling demands in- telligence, agility and self-sacrifice, Of- ten a wrestler is required to curb his appetite and work down a few pounds. This action is very character building and is the essence of the sport. Individ- ually, the team post many records. At 100 pounds, senior captain A! Wong boast a 12-1 (win-loss) record. The team had beaten the likes of Marshfield, Weymouth South, Tabor Academy, Lexington, Franklin, Stoughton, and North Quincy. The wins posted re- quired a team effort and individual ef- fort as well. His toss of 49 ft. 1 in. rocked the Luke Urban Field House. Sherwin placed fifth in the State Meet held at Harvard. Two other records were broken during the season with freshman standout Sarah Wilcox, clocking a 12:11 in the two mile and Shannon Hathaway's 2:54 in the 1000 yard run. Co-captains Jim Podesky and Greg Rodrigues led the team in the 600 yard dash and mile run. Podesky captured his personal best at the State Meet with a time of 1:19.6. Rodrigues came within .3 seconds to the school record with a best of 4:44.6. Shotputer Tim Griffin also competed in the State Meet but didn't break his personal best throw of 46 feet. Other seniors did their part in proudly representing Durfee. Topperette co-captains Elly Wrobieski and Chris Branco showed their talent in the shot put and 50 yard hurdles respectively. Newcomer Bryant Edwards ran an impressive best of 7.0 seconds in the 50 yard hurdles while George Kelly, also a newcomer to the sport, showed excellent performances in the 600 yard dash and 4x440 relay. 143 Compliments of GEORGE KELLY - VICE PRINCIPAL CAPTAINS 144 PERFORMING GRACEFULLY AND SKILLFULLY The Durfee Gymnasts, under the direction of coach Skip Winters, vaulted into their season with an impressive victory over Barnstable. The team was able to win by a larger margin than expected. The depth of the team, which allowed for a safety in case a gymnast had an off day, caused this unexpected win. The win consisted of many talented gymnasts. Each competitor contributed to the successful season. This proved true when the team suffered injur- ies to key performers and the overall score was not greatly affected. The likeness in ability was shown in the Durfee-Wareham meet. The following were the top two per- formers of each event: Bars, Liz Saunders 6.1, Julie Fleming 6.0, Beam, Pam Flem- ing 6.3, Danielle Pavao 6.2, Vault, Tara Fleming 7.75, Julie and Pam Fleming 7.45, Floor, Julie Fleming 7.12, Liz Saunders 7.1. Under the coaching staff of Jack Carey and Bob Taylor, the Toppers confronted their opponents with aggressive plays and strong defense. The game against Bishop Feehan was a disappointing loss. They rallied from behind to keep the Toppers from posting a major upset. Durfee's loss could not tarnish those star plays by Scott Santos, who scored all four Topper goals against Bishop Feehan. Another near win was the game against Dennis-Yarmouth. Durfee led throughout most of the game, but Dennis-Yarmouth came from behind to score the win. An exciting win during the season was the victory over Seekonk. Bryan Palumbo’s 20-foot wrist shot with 20 seconds left, gave Durfee a 5- 4 win. Doing their best for the Toppers were defensemen John Coleman and John Carroll, who both knew how to dump the puck in for a score. Senior Mike Nawrocki was there many times to score and set up other Toppers like Matt Johnson and Ray Kitchen. Guarding the nets for the Toppers were goalies Jack Carey and Dave Pavao, who kept the team in close contests with spectacular saves. Contributing their talents to those winning plays were Gino Goulart, John Russo and Captain Mike Poulos, who was a steady performer throughout the season. Under new head coach Raymond Medeiros, the “Cardiac Kids”, as they came to be known, combined good pitching, solid defense, timely hitting, and fantastic finishes to stay close to the top of Division One all season. In order to clinch a tourney berth, the Toppers first had to defeat a tough Attleboro team in a one game play off for the post season spot. After a seesaw battle for the first eight innings, th “Cardiac Kids” came through again with a four rur ninth inning to win the game. Next stop for the Top pers was the opening round tournament game againsi Natick. They played well but were beaten by Natick who eventually went on to win the tournament. Brian O'Neil, Jeff Pontes, Gerard Roy, Norm Rego, and Tim Saunders playing key positions on the team. SPRING TRACK 140 Under the leadership of Donald Powell, the Toppers showed outstanding ability in rebuilding a sport which was reinstituted at Durfee only two years ago. The Topperettes, under the leadership of Dave Ozug, also contributed their talents to the rebuilding program. Both teams displayed their strength and style in the various events. The Toppers went that extra length to win against Diman, Somerset, Case, and Fairhaven. Contributing to the success of the Toppers were sen- iors Jim Podesky, who pole vaulted and competed in the 400 dash and Greg Rodrigues, who ran the mile. Other contributors of success were Dave Sherwin, who represented Durfee in the shot put and javelin events, and Mike Nawroeki, who also competed in the shot put events. Other seniors included Dave Teixeira, and George Kelly, with help from juniors Mike Beauchemin, Jim Wilcox, Bob Camara, Bri- an Polumbo, and Andy Desrosiers. A factor which helped the program greatly was the addition of the new rubberized surface on the Thomas W. Ham- mond Track, and the improvements made to the Field event areas. Durfee High School Girls’ tennis team had an outstanding season with an overall record of 16 wins and 4 lossess in the Southeastern Massachusetts Division HI Con- ference. The right leadership was provided by returning coach, Gerry Valente. Most of last year’s winning spirit came with the help of number one singles player Julie Almedia, who showed her best skills with an overall record of 16-4. You, Chris, and your classmates entered Durfee H.S, to begin an important growing and sharing period of your lives. I embarked upon the job of Superintendent of Schools and in a way began the process of growing and sharing with you. I have seen in your four years a remarkable change-from a somewhat shy, introspective adolescent to a mature, independent and beautiful young woman. 1 would like to think that I too have grown and matured in a difficult job-not often understood nor appreciated by those for whom I am required to toil, and for those to whom the past is the yardstick. But, like you and your classmates, the growth we have experienced has been seasoned by the full range of human emo- tions, laughter, tears, happiness and sorrow. And, we didn’t al- ways see eye to eye on things. Neither as father-daughter, nor as Superintendent and student. But, I believe we all did grow. And in growing we learned from each other. And isn’t that the essence of life? That we grow together, disagree, compromise, share laughter and tears and love and respect each other for our differ- ences as well as our commonalities. Your mother and I are proud of you as are all the parents of the graduating seniors. You are our first-born and in many ways the first in everything in our life. We have high hopes for you as again, all parents have for the graduating seniors, as does the faculty of B.M.C. Durfee High School that shared with all parents in the growth and develop- ment of the Class of '84. Chris and classmates we love you, w'e pray that we have done the best for you, go forth and make us proud of you. Love, Dad John R. CORRE1RO ADMINISTRATION JOHN R CORREIRO SUPERINTENDENT ADMINISTRATION I consider myself a very lucky person ordinarily to be associated with young men and women on a daily basis because you have qualities that keep older people thinking young. In particular, you as a class have manifested these qualities in an extraordinary way. You have been enthusiastic, cheerful, thoughtful, forthright, kind, and full of ideas. 1 believe these qualities to be so important as to wish fervently that you will retain them as individuals throughout your lifetime and thereby serve as examples to other adults who sometimes tend to set aside the excitement of their youth—and burden themselves with artificial cares. You as a class are to commended for what you have brought to Durfee and what you have left for us. I hope and pray that in the years to come you will remember your youth by remaining true to your present selves. Good luck to you’ James S. PANOS PRINCIPAL JAMES E. PANOS 160 161 Vincent M. (GD) Larry, Ann, Paul, Amy Brandy Becky, Brad, Bethany Pineault 219 FAREWELL ALMA MATER June 3, 1984, symbolizes more than a Sunday in June, it marks the end of a class as the class of '84 graduates from B.M.C. Durfee High School of Fall River. For four years we walked the confined, yet secured hallways of Durfee. We tackled our academic endeavors, while we undertook the challenges of everyday adolescent life. Today’s world, when compared to the well traveled hallways of Durfee, projects itself as a maze of uncertain unsecured corridors. There will be no tones to tell us when to move from one point to another, and there will be no safe haven where friends can be found to understand and comfort us. Today’s world is a fast moving place, where the competition is strong and the pressure is sometimes endless. There will come a time when each one of us will want to escape those adulthood demands and responsibilities. Hopefully, the 1984 yearbook will help you recapture those carefree days, linking your mind to those adolescent havens. 1 thank my staff and especially those who came through with their written articles. Thanks must go to Loring’s Studios for always being there with cameras ready, and to Norval Garnett of Josten’s Yearbook Company for valuable assistance. We all owe our greatest debt to Mr. R. W. Pineault, our advisor. Without his skills and advice, this yearbook could not have been published. I would also like to thank the class of 1984, for without their smiling faces, this yearbook would mean very little. I wish all of you the very best. The class of ’84 has the opportunity to take the world by storm. We must give a wholehearted, indivisible commitment to humanity. Together, we can make a difference. Good luck and best wishes for a successful and happy life. 220 RODNEY MAURICIO, EDITOR - ft JOSTENS
