OUR SCHOOL OUR HOME FOR FOUR YEARS SENIORS On the following pages we, the class of 1983, appear in our finest pose. Through the years our features will surely change. However, what has been captured in the form of a senior por- trait can never be altered. Yes, years will pass and those nostalgic thoughts will play with out minds. When such happens, we will remember those rambling days of high school as we reach for our yearbook and glance at what used to be but can never be again. Our high school days are gone. We look to the future, wondering what lies ahead for us, the class of ‘83’. 3- Yet, while our eyes look ahead, our thoughts float back over the past four years. We did much, met many, and learned a great deal. GOOD-BY B M C. DURFEE H.S. Helen ZARLENGA Christine WOOD Derek YARBOUGH David ZYG1EL 83 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT: SECRETARY, BETH REMY VICE PRESIDENT, DAVID REITZAS TREASURER, BRAD KILBY SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS SENIOR REPRESENTATIVES PRESIDENT. PETER COHEN l.-R: RICK COLEMAN- DAISY IOE- GARY TRIAL THE POPE VISITS U.S.A OUR FRESHMAN YEAR We arrived at Durfee, awed by its size and endless corridors that many times led us to a concrete wall Our confusion soon gave way to a given purpose and direction. Academic challenges tackled us the classrooms, while our fellow classmates tackled us tor space in those lengthy lunch lines. Thanksgiving, Aldrich Field was dedi cated .... Christmas .... winter vacation. The world events made news .... the Pope made a triumphant visit to the U.S.A. Ameri- cans became angry over Iran’s actions towards our embassy and occupants. Russia sent troops into Afghanistan .... President Carter spoke for peace, patience, and understanding. World peace .. would it ever become a reality??? Winter Olympics .... a hockey team won the cheers of many Americans. The days got warmer .... is wandered to summer fun. Our freshman year ended .... adjusted, and we learned. Next year............SOPHO- MORES. 1979-1980 IRAN TAKES HOSTAGES 5 Summer.......just a memory.......our sophomore year now faced us. We had returned to handle new challenges and renew old friendships. The hallways were still crowded . . . smoke still filled the rest rooms . . . the intercom still worked overtime. The world still fumed with unrest and tension. A Beatle star, John Lennon, was shot in front of his New York Appartment. Jimmy Carter met with defeat at the polls while Ronald Reagan won by a land slide. SOPHOMORE MOVING AHEAD The hostages returned to America among many loud cheers. On television Dallas and Hill Street Blues were big among the fans. We found ourselves being asked what we wanted to take next year .... the end of another school year was rapidly ap- proaching. A half way point had been reached .... two years down......two more to go. Could it be, we were going to be JUNIORS. RIGHT ON!!! CARTER .... DEFEATED REAGAN .... ELECTED 1980-1981 NAGLE .... RETIRED 87 FALL RIVER GOT A NEW LOOK UNEMPLOYMENT .... A REALITY September . . . , back again . . . . schedules . . . flex .... PSAT’s.Junior Prom, and that precious piece of plastic, a driver's license. We found that as a class we had become closer, having directed our thoughts toward common goals such as graduation, college, military service, and or becoming productive members of society. Senator Kennedy visited Durfee .... school dedicated. Teachers followed a work to rule clause .... senior follies failed to become a reality. Fall River was changing ... a mill and Notre Dame Church were destroyed by fire ... a mall and a parking garage took up residence on main street. From Washington D,C. President Reagan predicted a brighter future while for many workers the lights had gone out on employment. Egypt lost a respected leader with the assasination of President Sadat. Interest rates were still soaring while home and car sales were declining. Well, another year was coming to a close. We said good-by and good luck to the class of 82 . We were going to be SENIORS. WOW!! OUR JUNIOR 88 YEAR . . . 1981-1982 SENATOR KENNEDY ___AT DURFEE PRESIDENT SADAT ___ASSASINATED REAGAN AND HIS ECONOMICS?? 19 THE JUNIOR PROM DANCING LAUGHING TALKING WITH THAT SPECIAL ONE 90 APRIL 25, 1982 It was our night at lhe Venus. As a class we celebrated the end of our junior year. The word was going around that this was only a dress rehearsal For the senior prom. OUR EYES SEE WHAT IS NOW For some it was a house of worship. For many it was a landmark .... a work of architectural beauty. On May II, 1982, that landmark was destroyed by fire. NOTRE DAME DE LOURDES 92 DESTROYED ON MAY 11, 1982 Vacant lots appeared where a church once stood and homes once existed. Our minds, how- ever, would remember what once was in the past, and not what existed now as the present. OUR MINDS REMEMBER HOW IT WAS 93 Our last year .... we returned in September ready to tackle our aca- demics with one last push for success. We knew that soon we would leave those hallway gathering places where the bonds of friendship were strong and the laughter was loud. New chal- lenges awaited us . . . . new surround- ings would replace those well known corridors. 1982 - 1983 OUR SENIOR YEAR 94 BREZHNEV .... GONE ET ... A BIG HIT THE FUTURE....... A ROAD TO?????? Our senior year passed so quickly .... we lost lo the Whalers on the grid iron on turkey day .... winter and spring vacations put smiles on our faces. The world around us still existed in a sphere of unrest, inflation, unemployment and doubt. Russia lost Leonid Brezhnev while Mon- aco said good-bye to Princess Kelly, Hollywood said its farewell to Ingrid Berman and Henry Fonda. President Reagan kept insisting that the economy was improving while Fall River opened its first soup kitchen since the depression. ET and On Golden Pond were big hits at the mov- ies, and cable was making a hit on television. Senior follies returned .... a big success. The SENIOR PROM . . . enjoyed by all at the Vikings in Newport. Had it been four years?? we looked back we found ourselves forget- ting the bad times and only remembering the good ones. New people would be met, new places would be seen, and new friendships would be formed. But, those adolescent days when we once learned, laughed, and matured in a place known as Durfee H.S., would always exist in our minds as fond memories. 95 THE CLASS OF 83 Joseph 0. AGUIAR Michael S. RICHARD Alan STEVENS Nancy J, RIOUX Tammy STEWARD 90 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY WORKING FOR PROGRESS Congratulations to you on completing a milestone in your lives; the completion of your high school educa- tion. This, however, is a beginning for you rather than an ending. It is the beginning of your adult life in which lessons taught and learned at Durfee High School in recent years will be put to use in making decisions about which direction your lives will take. For many it will be continued education, for others it will be employment, and for still others it will be a combination of the two, but for all of you working and learning will never end. I hope that B.M.C. Durfee High School has prepared you well for the future. I am confident that it has. To all of you and the faculty and staff at B.M.C. Durfee High School congratula- tions and best wishes for a happy and productive life. As graduating seniors you undoubtedly feel a sense of pride and accomplishment as you leave to pursue your various goals. Through the efforts of individuals such as seniors Tim Kelly, John Breault, and Steve Gagliardi, and juniors Jim Podesky, Greg Rodrigues, and Dave Sherwin, Durfee showed well against Connolly, Di- man, and Dighton-Rehobeth. BRIAN DIAS BRIAN DIAS BRIAN DIAS BRIAN DIAS REVIEWING OUR FOUR YEARS _____HAPPILY . . . SERIOUSLY 209 FRESHMAN Our freshman year was a year of adjust- ing. We were awed by our new sur- roundings and uncertain about many of our new responsibilities. As we pursued our academic challenges during our sophomore year, we found it easier to adjust and cope with our everyday chal- lenges. SOPHOMORE JUNIOR We approached our junior year with more confidence. The half way mark having been reached, we had a clearer view of where we were going and how we were getting there. With the arrival of our senior year, we became excited at the thought of graduating. But, the gleam in our eyes was sometimes be- trayed by the feeling of sadness in our hearts. SENIOR 211 ■ For four years, 180 days a year, we the class of 1983 walked the hallways and occupied the classrooms of Dur- fee H.S. From different parts of the city we came.......seeking friend- ship, understanding, and knowledge. 213 A CLASS AND A CITY___ TRAVELING THE ROAD OF CHANGE We observed many changes as we traveled the road of time. Those school day paths began to look altered and unfamiliar. Vacant lots appeared where once there stood a majestic house of worship and a sprawl- ing mill complex. Those dreary store fronts that once lined main street were demolished to be replaced with a new shopping mall and a parking garage. We real- ized that our community, like us, had undergone a change during the past four years. GLANCING OVER FOUR YEARS We witnessed progress in knowledge, learning more about ourselves, others, and our surroundings. We matured as we strove to attain satisfaction. The world of adulthood was lingering on the horizon, and we knew that we had to prepare now if we wanted to be a success in that challenging world. Those four years of preparation are gone, but those memories of working hard, yet having fun, remain in the back of our minds. There they will linger, until reawakened by a desire to recapture those school days of the past. - AT B.M.C. DURFEE H.S. 217 So many times people do not realize the value of what they have until they no longer have it. Realizing that we would soon be joining the world of adulthood, we cherished our senior days even more. B.M.C. 218 NUMBER ONE Durfec H.S. was more than an educa- tional institution, it was a long standing tradition. What came into being on a warm day in June of 1887, on a hill overlooking the Taunton River, was a feeling for a school that has been in existence for almost a century. OF OUR SCHOOL I B.M.C. Many of us worked long and hard to keep alive Durfee’s proud tra- dition. We strove for academic excellence, participated in various clubs, kept drama and music alive, and gave our best on the courts, fields, and mats of athlet- ics. FRIENDS FRIENDS Our school day friends, always there to add warmth when it was cold, to understand us when we could not be understood, to make us laugh when we wanted to cry, and to give us support when sup- port was needed. The days were sunnier with their presence and the load was lighter with their help. WE WILL NEVER FOR- GET THOSE SPECIAL ONES. ... OUR HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS. 220 VALUED SO MUCH TODAY TO BE REMEMBERED SO MUCH TOMORROW 221 WE WERE MOVING ON Good-byes are never easy to say, especially when they are forever. We had our four years at Durfee, and then we moved on to make room for another class. 222 THE SUN BEGAN TO SET ON OUR HIGH SCHOOL DAYS WE GLANCED BACK WITH SADNESS We hesitated as we glanced back at Durfee, our home for four years. However, we were soon engulfed by the excite- ment of having graduated. A class dies, only to live again at reunions. But, our high school spirit will never die, but exist strong in our hearts and minds. WE LOOKED AHEAD WITH EXCITEMENT 224 iff
