Text from Pages 1 - 220 of the 1982 volume:

REMEMBERING OUR HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDSHIPS..... THOSE GLOWING EXPERIENCES Harmony Charity Generousity We knew that new barriers awaited us. However, by working harmoniously together in a spirit of friendship, those barriers were overcome. i Our World Was An Adolescent Environment We had common questions, doubts and dreams. Anxiously we prepared ourselves for our exit, working as a team, working as a class. We Understood Each Other Knowing each other’s fears and anxieties, we traveled the corridor ways of Durfee in search of recog- nition. THEY WERE FUN FILLED DAYS The school echoed with our joy- fulness. Teasing and joking with each other, our academic load was lightened while our personal problems were put on hold. 6 Friendship....... A Feeling Of The Heart So many times .... so many thoughts .... we seeked solitude to think, to dream. Our minds were at peace, yet our hearts were warmed with the glow of school day friends. a How quickly our smiles would sometimes fade away, but the warmth and meaning of those smiles lingered throughout the day. We moved along from class to class with a feeling of togetherness. Our thoughts, our ideas and our attitudes, combined together, gave us an identity. 9 Out Of The Morning Haze We Came . . . . Searching For Our Classmates, Our Friends. From all parts of the city we came........by car, by bus, or by foot. The morn- ing, as our freshman year, was many times a hazy be- ginning. We Headed Home With Our School Day Friends .... No More Haze. WE ENCOUNTERED WE CHALLENGED WE ACHIEVED WE LEARNED Sometimes we faltered, confusing our priorities, while we lost sight of our goals. 13 What had started as a lonely venture four years ago as freshmen, had now blossomed into a rewarding adventure as seniors . . . . Our Hearts Desired To Stay With mixed feelings we said goodby to a building, to friends, to our adolescent world. We knew that we had to move forward, undertak- ing new challenges, meeting new people, and adjusting to unfamiliar places. Our Minds Raced To Leave Seniors Seniors Seniors 17 DONNA M. It was a long struggle, but we made it. Football season was exciting with spirit as always . . too bad we had to lose to the whalers. Many mailed out their college applications with high hopes while others looked to Uncle .Sam for future employment. Our senior year was a year of maturing. We learned how to cope with reality .... tears in our eyes and sadness in our hearts. Life, we discovered, was not always full of joy and laughter. Senator Edward Kennedy visited Durfee . . . school was dedicated. Senior follies faded as teachers followed “work to rule clause”. Mr. Arthur Frank, a respected member of the fac ulty, passed away during the February vaca- tion. We returned from our winter vacation . . , . counting the days to graduation. President Ssddt....... Assasinated On the world stage. President Reagan still predicted a brighter future, while President Sadat of Eygpt was assasinated. Iran was still being plagued by ignorance while Russia still had forces in Afghanistan. Interest rates were still soaring and car sales were still declining. Unemployment, like it was in the thirties, was rapidly becoming a well known “state of be- ing” to many. On the local scene, the mayor fought to hold spending .... the school budget got squeezed even more .... the state spoke out against high spending. The days grew warmer and longer. We were measured for our paper caps and gowns . .. . yearbook payments were made .... mail boxes were being watched to see if and when our college acceptance letter would arrive. The Viking in Newport swung with senior prom dances. WOW! Where did the past four years go?? Adolescence .... memories of the past .... adulthood .... challenges of the future. We said farewell to our friends, to a school, to our teachers, and to a way of life that would never be again. WATCH OUT WORLD. THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1982 IS ABOUT TO MAKE ITS FANFARE ENTRANCE! 114 Compliments of FEITELBERG INSURANCE AGENCY INC. Administration And Faculty Working Together For Common Goals And Educational Improvement I want to offer my congratulations to you upon the occasion of your graduation from B.M.C. Durfee High School. You are entering a very different world from that of your parents - where tension has replaced stability abroad and doing more with less has replaced affluence at home. But, you are entering an exciting and challenging world, nonetheless a world that needs your youthful optimism and vitality. A world that needs to look anew at its values and priorities. A world that needs you and your perspective. 1 believe the Fall River Public Schools has pre- pared you well for the future and that your years at Durfee will be a source of strength to you. Each of you will travel diverse paths - that’s the beauty of life - diversity. And while life is truly fragile, I believe you have been well prepared for it. Today, then, begin the ‘ first day of the rest of your lives ' with all of our high hopes and expec- tations for your success. John R. Correiro Superintendent Administration In the year 2007, when you gather to celebrate your twenty-fifth reunion, you will look back upon your four years at Durfee in the light of mature perspective. At the present point in your life, your excitement over graduation and antici- pation over the future overshadow any tendency to look back. But in this past year the hand of tragedy has been placed on friends and relatives of this class to the extent that you have at least paused in your daily labors to think about the significance and meaning of life. This has given you an advantage over other classes in that you have become more aware that life is not all happiness and light, but that it must neverthe- less go on in a positive way. In 2007, 1 hope that you will remember those who have departed from your midst and those who will have depart- ed, and that you will be able to look upon life with loving memory, with meaning, and with your present vibrance. However, under the hot sun, a group of young men come together with one thought on their mind: to be a part of the 1981 B.M.C. Durfee H.S. Football Team. Gnder humid temperatures they would hit, run, tackle, and endure rigorous physical training. To represent their school on the gridiron to the best of their ability, was their goal. At the outset, the prospects of a successful season for the Hilltoppers looked promising. An impressive 7-0 triumph over Dart- mouth at the Jamboree and an awesome 27-0 rout over Hamilton-Wenham were two wins that gave a spark to the torch of victory. As the season progressed however, harmful injuries to many key performers quickly extinguished those sparks of victory. The season ended with a record of 2 wins, 7 losses, and one tie. Although the team did not achieve greatness on the field of football, individual effort and performance on the part of many, ranked high. Outstand- ing feats were realized by junior half back Brad Kilby, seniors co-captain and full-back Paul Nasiff, quarterback Chris Curtis, place kicker Jeff Carey, wide-receiver Bob Bogan, and linemen Dave White, Nick Leventis, Chris Darmody, and junior Chris Sullivan. No matter what the outcome, Coach Albruzzi stressed that playing the game fairly, with the emphasis on “good sportsmanship”, is what any sport should be all about. With a 0-14 (win-loss) record, the team had a disappointing season. Constant direction came from coach Kathy Milan, and each player gave her most. However, tough competition combined with some hard breaks kept Durfee out of the win col- umn. Co-captains Colleen Connor and Sharon La- Bossiere were constantly present to keep morale high and maintain team spirit. Top scorer for the team was Sharon La Bossiere with a total of five goals. Outstanding goal tending efforts went to freshman Lucy Amaral. Lucy came through many times during the 1981 season. It’s easy for a win- ning team to take to the field. But, as the lost column becomes well traveled, it takes special ef- fort to play, and maintain morale and school spirit. The girls, with Coach Milan at the helm, did just that. They never faltered in their determination to play the game fairly and admirably. 135 Co-Captains s“c V4 Co-Captains Seniors Shron La Bossiere - 4 Colleen Oliviera - 2 Maria Borges - 10 Rhonda Correia - 7 Colleen Connor - 5 136 Seniors Compliments of Marina Ventura, Vice Principal Soccer Coach Eugene Botelho This year was a rebuilding year for the Durfee Soccer Team. Eugene Botelho, coach of the year, depended heavily on his veteran seniors and obtained many good performances from his underclassmen players. Durfee had a fantastic overall win- ning record of 8-5-3 (wins-losses-ties), while capturing first place in the West Division. Compared with last year’s record of 1-9 (win-losses), this year's record was an im- pressive one. A major highlight of the sea- son was a 2-1 upset over New Bedford. This was the first time the Hilltoppers had beaten the Whalers in 17 years. An impor- tant factor for Durfee's winning record was All-Star forward Paul Texeira, who broke the all-time scoring record of 21 goals in one season. He was assisted by All-Star halfback Victor Silva, All-Star center-full- back and co-captain Manuel Pais, and co- captain Henry Raposa. Several underclass- men who also contributed their talents were junior Louis Correia, and sophomores Raoul Baptiste, John Hilario, and outstand- ing goalie Mario Texeira. Jeans enabled us to dress for comfort in style. Hard soled, narrow toed shoes were worn with most fashions, Topsiders, pumps, clogs, ankle-strap heels were also common. Western boots, for boys and girls, also found their way around the hallways of Durfee. Hair styles varied with the styles of clothing. French braiding, ponytails and rib- bons were popular. The “punk” haircut was short and uneven; the more it looked as though your six year old brother cut it, the better. Now we will become involved with those endless challenges of just existing from day to day. 207 Compliments of MICHAUD -PORRIER INS. AGENCY, INC. High School .... A Touch Of Reality 208 Compliments of a FRIEND High school is but a taste of life. We are no longer children but have stepped into a more difficult stage of life . . . . adulthood. We have matured through the high school years realizing the lollipops are all gone and the scraped elbows have healed. Photographs and memories are all we have left of our adolescent years. Yesterday is gone and we strive for tomorrow. It seems just like yesterday when we first learned to ride a bike, fantasizing how it would be to drive our own car. Growing up as kids, we reached into the adult world with our everyday play. The days of playing games have come to an end, and we now search in our minds how to play the game of life. Adolescents .... Being Treated As Adults Our high school years were the most important years in our life. In those years there were many who treated us like adults, teaching us how to be responsible for our- selves and preparing us on how to step into the world on our own after high school. But in that time we had laughed, cried, loved, and accepted life through its most diffucult stages. Our feelings for our friends had become intensed as we matured more and more each day. There were some difficult days, but we seem to pull through. Today the images are in our mind, yet the future will soon fade into the past and become just another memory. Some people say yearbooks can make time stand still. They can!!! For ten years from now, we will realize the uncertainty of today did indeed become the foundation of tomorrow. 209 Congratulations to the class of 1982 - MR. MRS. ROBERT W. GG1LMETTE Remembering A Friend Karen Jarabek It only seems like yesterday when she walked, talked, and laughed with us through the hallways of Diirfee. During her four years at Durfee, Karen showed a great deal of leadership, friend ship, and spirit. Durfee H. S. was more than an edifice to her, it was a place where she grew and learned. She was indeed a leader in many ways. She gave many stu dents the inspiration to strive for the best in their undertakings. She worked for academic perfection, competed aggressively in her swimming, gave spirit and zest to her cheering, and gave her sincerity and warmth to her friends. As captain of the diving team, she contributed her talents in the winning of a state championship. Her enthusiasm and spirit was not only prevalent on the swim team, it prevailed in abundance on the cheering squad. Her role as head cheerleader was one of self confidence. However, she was more than just a head cheerleader, she was a friend and a comforter, A friendly smile, a comforting word, or a spirited Durfee cheer, were once a part of Karen's world. Mow, they exist as memories in our world. Although she is no longer with us, her spirit will always be in our hearts and will exist forever in our thoughts.
