We were sophomores and we were entering the new school that we had heard so much about. Most of us began our orientation day filled with both excitement and apprehension. Many students traveled the corridors searching for their classes. For many, the search became a losing battle. The school year suddenly came to abrupt halt. The teachers embarked on the first teachers’ strike in the history of Fall River. The strike lasted sixteen days. The school year had been only three days old. When the teachers and students returned to school, some students engaged in walk-outs to pro- test the making up of time lost during the strike. The year continued rather smoothly. Miss Marina Ventura was appointed to the position of Freshman Vice-principal, and Mr. George Kelly became the Sophomore Vice-principal. The play Oklahoma, was performed by many talented students here at Durfee. The movie Grease, and the character, Mork, from theT.V. show, “Mork and Mindy,” became quite popular. OUR JUNIOR YEAR 1979-1980 Our summer vacation was over. We returned to school eagerly awaiting our next vacation. We began to think about our future after high school. College board exams became challenges to some students, but for others they were depressing experiences which many hoped to forget. The Miracle Worker and George M were successful plays performed in the Nagle Auditorium. Mornings became more cheerful with the new addition of a radio station here at Durfee. WDHS, ORIGINALLY CALLED WDUR, became very popular among the students and teachers. Outside of our school many pertinent events took place. The Winter Olympics, held in Lake Placid, N.Y., was an event most everyone enjoyed. Unfortunately, there were unpleasant events that dominated the headlines. The Russians invaded Afghanistan, and the Iranians seized the American Embassy in Tehran, and held Americans captive. 99 OUR SENIOR YEAR 1980-1981 Everyone had been waiting in anticipation for this year. It was our final year of high school. We began our last year with a new superintendent, Mr. John R. Cor- reiro. He assumed the position which Robert J. Nagle upheld for 17 years. Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter and became our new Presi- dent. Proposition 2Vz brought much controversy to the state of Mass. Many feared the loss of many great teachers and several of our ex- tracurricular activities. On December 8, 1980, the world of music suffered a great loss. John Lennon, a former Beatle was shot to death in front of his New York apartment. He died at the age of 40. January 20, 1981, was a day of celebration for many Americans and their families. The 52 hostages who were held captive in Iran for 444 days were set free. This was also the same day Ronald Reagan was sworn in as our new President. Senior Follies, was a great success put on by many of the population here at Durfee. Along with its excitement the students also had the ex- citement of rushing home in hopes of finding a letter of acceptance from the college of their choice. Graduation was just around the corner, fittings for caps and gowns had to be made. Also plans for the Prom had to be settled upon. We had a tough decision between The Chateau de Ville and the Viking Hotel. Most everyone favored the Viking Hotel. (We all know why!) This was our last year here at Durfee. Next year we will all begin to live independently. We will all be adults. There is no turning back to the security of our past. All the seniors’ lifestyles will be different, but we will all have one thing in common — We are the graduates of the 1981 class at Durfee High. We finally made it! 100 MARCHING BAND RECEIVES RECOGNITION FROM MARGARET HECKLER AT THE STATE CAPITOL 101 THE WAY WE WERE IT'S THE SMILES WE'LL REMEMBER. . . 102 T.V. STUDIO FOCUS ON: Mr. John Gorman, T.V. Studio Instructor. Upon entering the TV studio for the first time, one gets the impression of being backstage at ABC. It’s an exciting feeling, knowing that the equipment surrounding you is exactly the same as that used by the professionals. You picture yourself directing a spectacular television extravaganza. Once the initial feeling of wonder wears off and you begin to work in the control room and on the studio floor, you realize that it isn’t as easy as it looks to put a TV show together. There are all kinds of problems: [IF equipment goes on the blink, cameramen mess up their shots, or the talent forget their lines. When the show finally gets put together, though, it gives you a really rewarding feeling. It’s great to think that something you created will be seen by others who will appreciate it. The really terrific part comes when your creation is shown and you get enthusiastic comments from the people you see. All that has to happen then is for someone to ask for your autographi then, watch out — Prime Time! 105 (j 3Sn' yer), n.; One of a lower or recent standing. 106 107 (soph'-o-mor), n; After Gr. sophos wise, and moros fool, foolish. 108 109 (fresh' m£n), n.; Beginners at anything. 110 Ill 113 1980 HILLTOPPERS New Coach! Durfee High School Band took a new plunge in the way of field trips in June 1980. They decided to go to Washington for an exciting week to perform in the Apple Blossom Festival. After a long bus trip they arrived at Virginia, and then on to Washington D.C. In Washington they stopped at many interesting historical points. The first stop was the Smithsonian Institution, then they proceeded to the Air and Space Center. The rest of the day was spent for resting. The next day presented tours through the White House, Ken- nedy Center of ARTS, The Engraving and Printing Building, Ford Theater, The Washington Monument, National Federation Church, Embassy Row (where ambassadors to the United States live) and the Capitol Building. The next day the band was greeted by Cong. Margaret Heckler who took them to the House of Representatives and then to the Lincoln Memorial where the stage band performed on the steps. The fourth day began the thrilling performance in the Shenan- doah Apple Blossom Festival Parade. A two hour drive to Win- chester lay ahead. The parade started at 2:00 p.m. and ended at 6:00 p.m. It was very exciting for everyone, as well as very tiring. Sunday was the last day and the next stop proved to be the most emotional. It was a subdued excitement as the members toured the Arlington National Cemetery, where they saw the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the eternal flame celebrating John F. Kennedy’s grave. This marked the end of the exciting trip to Washington. Finally, after several stops the B.M.C. Durfee High School Band returned home once again. 152 153 ARCHEOLOGY CLUB One of the highlights of this year’s Archeology Club members has been the field trips with our advisor Mr. James Clark to local cemeteries for the tomb- stone rubbings. Durfee High School's musical production for the 1980- 81 school year is to be Brigadoort, which was written by the famed Lerner and Loewe. This musical originally opened on Broadway in 1947, and received tremendous critical acclaim. Senior Follies begins Each year, here at Durfee, seniors engage in numerous activities to ease the cost of various events held by the Senior Class. The activity which has been by far the most successful is the Senior Follies. Rehearsals have already begun for the show and the turnout and attitude of the cast has been overwhelming. Director James Tavares stated,“The Class of ‘81 is displaying a tremendous amount of spirit.” This year the Follies will add on an additional night.lt will run for four consecutive nights during the last week of February. Not only does Senior Follies prove worthwhile with the money it raises, but the cast also benefits from the experience. They gain much more than money working with each other to come up with the best effort they can. In November, voters will go to the polls to vote on this very important question. The people trying to pass this bill want to cut property and excise taxes. These are the ones that each community depends on to provide such services as educatio. , fire and police protection, garbage collection, water and aid to the elderly. still running. The store is open Friday from 3:30 until 8:30; Saturday from IQ:(H until 6:00 and Sunday from 12:00 until 6:00. All proceeds go to the Rosi Hawthorne Lathrop Home. A quote from the Little World brochure seems to sum up th philosophy of the store, “love has no meaning until it's shared.” 179 HISTORY CLUB 180 MILITARY SCIENCE CLUB Club Advisor: William Brogan SENIOR FOLLIES The Senior Follies was the most fun-filled event in the life of the )-81 Seniors. Seniors who had talent, and those who didn’t, got gether under the supervision of Mr. James Tavares, and produced marvelously funny show. The Senior Follies also gave the Seniors a chance to become iends with many new people, and this togetherness made the spirit I the Senior Follies even greater. Contained within this M flme memories of the final three years of this Iff l incerely hope that because of this book many W4 Imories will be revived and not forgotten in the would like to give my special thanks to all of my staff I wnSS ard work and dedication made this book possible. II would also like to thank all of the faculty and administra- tion of B.M.C. Durfee H.S. for their cooperation and guidance, especially Mr. Edmond Cote, our staff advisor. This was Mr. Cote’s first year as a yearbook staff advisor and I believe that a veteran advisor could not have given us his time more freely. Along with a new advisor came a new official school photographer, Dodge-Murphy Studios, and a new year- book printer, Taylor Publishing. All of the representatives from both companies were courteous, helpful, and added to the outcome of this book. I truly hope that anyone who uses this book as a magical key to the past knows that this key was forged by the perseverance and imagination of many hard-working people. _______ Julie Cyr ■ ■ ■ . -‘t rtitwr 1 KEELEY LIBRARY !
