OF FALL RIVER THAN ITS LOCATION AND NAME. 96 The new Durfee gave us an opportunity to choose from many courses that got us involved in food preparation, restaurant operations and retailing procedures. For those oriented towards chemical reactions and biological theory, new up-to-date labs were available for us to learn and experiment in. A new elaborate field house provided us with a variety of things to challenge our muscles. Gymnastics, swimming, and or tennis offered more excitement and enjoyment to physical education. 97 Some of us will not appreciate what now exists as part of the present until we have been thrown into the future. Our Senior year has been a mixture of new policies new rules and new surroundings that many times drove us into a sphere of chaos and disappointment. However, no matter how chaotic or disappointing some of those Sen- ior school days might have been, we have indeed had an active part in Durfee's new beginning. M. C. DURFEE H.S. FIELD HOCKEY TEAM The 1978-79 school year fully opened the new Durfee High School and at the same time marked the beginning of the first Durfee Field Hockey Team. Although the team had a slow start because of the girls' unfamiliarity with the new sport, enough girls turned out to field two teams. Kathy Milan, coach, was a constant morale builder. The girls worked hard every day despite many obstacles like traveling to Chew Field and unpleasant weather condi- tions. The team was winless for the season, but their fair play attitude and aggressiveness was noted by many teams and officials. As the school year ends, captain Sara Ferreira and senior Sue Costa will be moving on. However, there will be team members returning, and with them comes one year of field hockey experience. Co-captains Chris Paul and Diane Es- posito will be returning along with Sophomore high scorer Susan Canuel,'Freshman goalie Geraldina Lopes, who was named to the league all star team, will also be back to contribute her talents. Next season should be more positive in nature. Combine the team’s one year experience with their desire and fortitude, and you got a team that will surely move ahead on the road of winning. 138 THE SENIOR DUET SUSAN COSTA SARA FERREIRA 139 VARSITY FOOTBALL The 1978 Varsity Football Team included fifteen seniors and was lead by co-captains Mark Moreira and Bruce Habib. Under the direction of Coach John Sullivan, the Durfee Hilltoppers were brought back to life. It was the first winning season at Durfee in 6 years, finishing with a record of 5 wins and 4 loses. Southeast Conference Divi- sion I victories over Taunton. Fairhaven, and Falmouth placed Durfee third in the seven team league. Outstanding victories included a 37-0 opening win at Bishop Stang in a night game and a 18-0 win over Coyle Cassidy. Selected to the Coaches All Conference Team were running back Mark Moreira and tackle Ernie Watson. Other players named to All Star Teams included Bill Heap, |im Carey, Steve Almeida, Jeff Griffin, Mike Frank, Bruce Habib, and junior John Silvia. The junior Varsity team had an outstanding season by finishing the year with an unde- feated and unscored on record of 7-0. MELLO Joseph JANERIO Paul OLIVEIRA Louis SILVA ADDING STRENGTH TO THE TEAM Pedro PEITERA Luis SILVA 144 Kick that ball! Block that kick! Score that point! By working together this year’s soccer team worked hard to follow through with many strong kicks, . and effective blocks to bring about some needed scoring points. Under the coaching arms of Gene Botelho. the soccer team ended a tough season with a 4-9-1 (win-loss-tie) record. Constantly trying to improve team play and team spirit Coach Botelho directed his energies toward making each member of the team feel that he was a contributing link. POWER ... ON THE FIELD On the field the players were in constant motion. Tri-captains Moses Pereira, Louis Silva and Adilson Teves were like an energetic mass of molecules on the field. They never wavered from their goal, and they never ceased playing aggressively and competatively, Adilson Teves, displayed his expertise in the area of soccer by making the All Star Team. Six starters will be lost this year, but there is hope that some of the J.V. players will add to the team’s strength. With next year’s defense still intact, the team should be a power house on the field. 145 CROSS COUNTRY Running came back to life at Durfee with the help of a small number of students. Coach Donald Powell, however, wasted no time in taking advantage of the team's strong points, while strengthening those areas in which the team was weak. The squad, while small in size, was steadfast in its efforts, and showed continuous improvement. The sea- son had its ups wilh wins over Case. Westport, and Stang, and its downs with losses in meets against Connolly, Wereham, Freeham, and Bourne. With a 3-4 (win-loss) record, the team placed sixth in Division II Competition. The leadership of Junior captain Skip Darmody over the 2Yi mile distance was outstanding, and will become even more apparent in forth coming seasons as underclassmen strive to eclipse his many records. He had a rewarding season, capturing first place in 5 of 7 meets. The support of the senior runners cannot be overlooked as they gave much in their abbreviated running careers at Durfee. COACH COACH COACH DONALD POWELL COACH COACH COACH 146 THE SENIOR ROAD RUNNERS KENNETH BAZINET - 9 DAVID STEINHOF - 34 STEVE RICHARD - 15 JOSEPH SABIK - 21 147 GIRLS’ SWIM TEAM GIRLS’ SWIM TEAM GIRLS’ SWIM TEAM SUE KITCHEN ... PERFORMING WELL FOR DURFEE. The year 1978 marked a new era in athletics at B.M.C. Durfee High School with the introduction of a Girls1 Swim Team. Seventeen dedicated girls knew nothing but the thrill of victory as they coasted to a 180 record in both the Sectional and State Championships. Coach Swalm wasted no time in creating a strong swim team that would effectively compete with the best. Senior girls Katie Hudner, Sharon Bogan. Ann Salois and Allison Smith all qualified for post season events. Also, post season honors went to sophomore Sarah Smith and Freshmen Beth Costa, Karen Jarabek and Nancy Stanton. In the area of diving and swimming. Sue Kitchen displayed her talents by winning the State Title in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle. Sue was also voted swimmer of the year” by Boston Newspapers. A first year team usually struggles along until it gets its footing, this year's swim team ignored the usu- al by starting its first year in a most elaborate style. Both the athletes and coach Richard Swalm are to be com- plimented. COACH RICHARD SWALM Susan KITCHEN 148 THE SENIOR TRIO - TRIO - TRIO KATIE HUDNER ANN SALOIS ALLISON SMITH 149 BOYS’ SWIM TEAM COACH RICK SWALM CHRISTOPHER ROCKETT - 55 ROBERT BERNARD - 61 150 Compliments of the MUSIC BOX. The boys swiming and diving team made its debut right after the Thanks- giving recess. Starting off on a nega- tive footing, the team showed im- provement as the season progressed along. Under the direction of Coach Rick Swalm, each member of the team devoted much of his free time towards building up his endurance. On the av- erage, each swimmer would swim at least 6,000 yards a day, six days a week. There were two seniors, Robert Bernard and Chris Rockett, on the team as the season got under way. However, Robert Bernard left the team in January. ACTION - ACTION - ACTION ... IN THE POOL Captain Chris Rockett had a good season, racking up a very impressive record. Out of 11 records set this sea- son, Chris set 9 of them. Out of 13 team members, five made it to the state competitions. They were Chris Rockett, Jim Hartnett, Paul Kitchen. Joe Costa, and Alfred Oliveira. Soph- omore Lou Periera and Junior Henry Oliveira were high up on the list of best divers. With only one senior member of the team leaving, the team, having members with one year ex- perience returning, should do well in all areas of competition next year. 151 Compliments of MR. MRS. LEONARD G. ALVES. BASKETBALL THE TOPPERS THE TOPPERS BASKETBALL HEAD COACH THOMAS E. KARAM The 1978-79 basketball season, unlike the previous two seasons, was not solely controled by Durfee. Coach Karam found, as he started the season off, that he did not have one returning player from last sea- son’s line up. Hope, something every coach relies on a little, was directed towards co-captains Jim Donnelly and Steve Ogden. Both players had seen limited varsity ac- tion during the 1977-78 season. Jim (Skip) Holleran and )im Medeiros, two new arrivals to the school and the team, also gave substance to Coach Karam’s hoping. The season was made up of many exciting games that kept the fans on their feet right down to the last second. One such game was the February 16th game against Connolly. One of the most memo- rable wins of the season was the game against number one Dartmouth, 52-44. This game was a must win situation, and every- one worked together to realize the win. Alan (Porky) Berard played his position with style. Jim Donnelly and Skip Holleran played an aggressive game off the boards, displaying their talents in the area of re- bounding. Couple this rebounding with Steve Odgen’s ball hawking, and what you got was 19 turnovers for Dartmouth while Durfee had only three. ASSISTANT COACH JOHN P. CAMPBELL Adding to all this talent was Bill Goncolo, who held Dartmouth’s tall center, Marlon Burn, to 16 points. Burn had scored 30 points during the last game against Durfee. When one takes into consideration that Durfee had practically a new team, the season was indeed a good one. With many of the junior varsity players returning next season, ex- citing basketball should again be prevalent throughout the season. 152 HLLRIVEl THE SENIOR SIX TIM MURRAY - 4 JIM DONNELLY - 11 JIM HOLLERAN - 20 JIM MEDEIROS - 24 STEVE OGDEN - 12 BILL HEAP - 3 FOR EVER PRACTICING ... 153 Compliments of the HILLTOPPER BOOK STORE. Under the watchful eyes of Coach Robert Richard, the players were molded into a team that had the spunk and the punch to give any team a run for its money. The team got off lo a positive start, running up a record of four wins and one loss. Some of the strongest games were played against the better teams in the league, such as Barnstable, Falmouth, Somerset and Dennis Yarmouth. Sickness and injuries, however, soon began to plague the remainder of the season. Of all the games played well but lost, the most disappointing were the two very close losses to rival Connolly. The Durfee team produced some scoring leaders during the season. At the time this article was being written, Paul Carey was leading with 14 goals and four assists, Bill Sullivan with eight goals and five assists, John Hart with six goals and four assists, and Brian Cabral with five goals and five assists. Each member of the team did his share to make hockey the game it is — fast moving and exciting! 155 Congratulations and Blessings To The Class of “79 — Compliments of SCHOOL COMMITTEEMAN ABRAHAM A. Guided by Coach Don Powell, each member of the team contributed his best. Such effort enabled the team to compile an enviable 5-2 (won-lost) record, finishing third in an eight team Division II Conference Meet. Overcoming substantial leads, Durfee reached deep within its winning spirit to have the wing-footed ‘D” break the tape. Outstanding performers included seniors Brian Jackson and Steve Almeida in the sprints and 1000 yard run respectively. Junior Skip Darmody displayed his endurance over the two mile run. Representing Durfee at its first Massachusetts Class A State Competition were Brian Jack- son, Steve Almeida, Skip Darmody and Russ Raymond. Brian Jackson captured the number two spot in the state. Doing a good job for the topperettes, were Robin Lewis and Monique LaPointe, who performed well in Conference Division Meet. BASKETBALL TOPPERETTES TOPPERETTES BASKETBALL The 1978 79 girl’s basketball team had a very successful season. With coach Beverly Cambra at the helm, the team received all the necessary guidance and direction that is needed for any team to perform well. The girls faced many teams with much greater height advantage, but quick and efficient team work got around such a disadvantage in that area. Some big wins during the season were against Stang, 40-27, against Somerset, 58-38, and against Seekonk, a touch and go situation right to the end, with a one point win. Leading scorers for the season were Ginney Plasski, a 13 point game average, Sue Alderman, with a 8.5 point game average, Colleen Hackett, with a 8.3 point game aver- age, and Mary Murray, with a 8.0 point game average. At the time of this write-up, the girls had a 13-6 (win-loss) record, with two games left to play, and a chance of going to the State Tournament. Whether or not the girls make it to tournament play, it can be said that they provided the fans with an exciting season of bas- ketball. 160 VIRGINIA PLASSK1 TALENT ON THE COURT ... THE SENIOR TOPPERETTES. KATIE HUDNER SUE ALDERMAN LISA LARRIVEE COACH BEVERLY CAMBRA 161 162 The Durfee Gymnastic Team, the first ever, was made up of a group of girls who performed their best at every meet. Gymnastic talent, which so many were not even aware existed at Durfee, was prevalent among the twelve young ladies who came out for the team. Coach Frederick Win- ters displayed his gymnastic talent and knowledge by working with the first year team long and hard; thus, enabling them to become masters of a complex sport. Many gruesome hours were spent on the balance beam, the horse, the mats, and the uneven parallel bars, but the girls gave them freely. Ending the season with a 6-3 (win-loss) record, the girls displayed great effort in all their meets. High points of the season were victories against Case, Falmouth, Attleboro, Taunton and Wareham. The League Meet, which included ten teams from this section, was exciting on all counts. The Durfee team placed second, only six points behind defend- ing state champions Somerset. Making state finals were Lisa Reitzas and Gayle Carter. The girls and Coach Win- ters should be able to look back with pride, for they provided Durfee with its first season of gymnastics, and they did it with style. Coach Jim Feijo constantly kept on top of the team to keep them alert on the mats. Several strategic moves by Coach Feijo brought about some stunning upset victories during the season. Feijo’s counter-action maneuvers against Duxbury resulted in a 30-22 victory. Other posi- tive victories were the 33-23 pinning of Catholic Memorial, and the four-match victory of 45-20 over Middleboro. Co-captains Jon Saber and Chris Boyle both demonstrated their expertise in the area of wrestling by racking up impressive records for the season. Jon Saber had a 14-8-2 (won-lost-tied) record while Chris Boyle had a 14-7-2 (won-lost-tied) record, Dave Steinhof, who joined the team in his senior year, was highly impressive in his efforts on the mats. Entering the little world of Christmas, children had the opportunity to buy a small gift for their parents and or friends. All money earned by the retailing classes was donated to the Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home. 196 • • JOHN CONNELL teaching the value of giving and the joy of earning esteem income to his students, his associates, and his community. 197 THE CLASS OF “79” SCORED HIGH IN THE AREA OF ACHIEVEMENT ACHIEVEMENTS ACHIEVEMENTS ACHIEVEMENTS ACADEMICS Each step taken forward on the path of knowledge was an achievement. Whether these steps of progress were small or large, they were the results of many hours of listening, reading and studying. Knowing more today than we knew yesterday ... academic achievement. 198 ACTIVITIES As students we knew that all our time should not be allocated to aca- demics, Activities enabled us to add to our knowledge in a relaxed mood and atmosphere- Achievements were real- ized in many areas of activities, how- ever, some stood out more than others. ACTIVITIES ACHIEVEMENTS ACHIEVEMENTS ACHIEVEMENTS The Environmental Control Committee, formed some ten years ago under the direction of Roger H. Dubois, contin- ually strived to pinpoint local environmental problems. After much planning, organizing, experimenting, inter- viewing, and researching, a report was submitted to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, This re- port resulted in a trip to Washington, D.C. Seniors who made the trip were Joseph Sabik, Janice Yee and Mary Ellen Gurnett. Representative Margaret Heckler accom- panied the group to the White House where televised recognition was received from President Carter. ‘‘Lets hear that cheer!” The Durfee Cheerleaders cheered so loudly that they could be heard throughout the country. Under the direction of Annie McMahon, the Durfee cheer- leaders brought pride to our school when they entered the state competition and won. As a result, the cheerleaders performed their winning cheer on television at Shaffer Stadium. Members of the class of ’79” who made that big and memorable cheer were Lynn Boyer, Arina Cabral, Holly Demers, Debbie Oliveira and Beatrice Sullivan, GOOD GOING CHEERLEADERS! 199 H — I — L—L — T — O — P The Hilltop was brought back to life during our senior year. Seniors Ken- neth Bazinet, Editor, and Maria Ar- ruda, Business Manager, lead a hard working staff to produce a newspaper that put emphasis on the students and their school environment. Guidance and direction were provided by Mi- chael Vieira. LURKING IN THE SHADOWS ... THE VALLEY BOTTOM. A counterpart to the Hilltop was the Valley Bottom. A group of students displayed their radical orientations by put- ting together a newspaper that focused in on issues that ranged from weighted grades to Attorney Pina s investigation of the new high school. It followed the many perils of Johnny from his inability to name the Vice-President of the U.S.A. to his inability to find a bathroom. Seniors who created the Valley Bottom were Kevin O’Connor, Mary Ellen Gurnett, Bill Hart, Melissa Roderick, Julie Katzman and Kerry Greeley. MUSIC - MUSIC The world of music played an important part in the activi- ties’ program. Achievements by senior members of the class of “79” were musically outstanding. Mary Ellen Dollard was named to perform at the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Festival. Sue Cohen was selected as a winner in the annual Young Artists Competition for her abilities on the piano. ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES 200 Sports demand endurance that can only be achieved by many hours of practice backed up by sincere dedication. The class of “79” had many outstanding representatives in the area of sports. Whether they lost or won, the spirit of fair play was a part of each participant. To be able to maintain a good scholastic average while devoting many hours to practice was an achievement that many times went unnoticed. Yes there were many seniors who gave their best for sports, some even achieving honors. There were Mark Moreira and Ernie Watson for football; Adilson Teves for soccer; Katie Hudner, Sharon Bogan, Ann Salois, Allison Smith, and Chris Rockett for swiming; Jim (Skip) Holleran, Jim Medeiros and Ginney Plasski for basketball; Judith Czer- wonka for gymnastics; Jon Saber and Chris Boyle for wrestling; Paul Carey for hockey; and for track and field there were Brian Jackson and Steve Almeida. SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS CONCLUSION ACHIEVEMENTS! YES. WE THE CLASS OF “79” SCORED HIGH IN ACHIEVEMENT IN ACADEMICS, ACTIVITIES AND SPORTS. ALL WE CAN HOPE FOR IS THAT ALL THESE ACHIEVEMENTS HAVE EN- ABLED US TO BECOME BETTER PREPARED TO HANDLE THOSE SCHOOL. JOB AND FAMILY RE- LATED CHALLENGES THAT AWAIT US. 201 ■ THE OLD DURFEE This is where we came as sophomores .. stayed as juniors ... until May marked our departure. Winter added a scenic beauty to the tower. Rock Street would be transformed into a winter arena where an occasional snowball would be thrown or a snowman masterpiece would be shaped. Security guards were few in number, and there was no garage for their go-carts. And the dreaded intercom, it had not yet been discovered as the only means of communications 202 Here is where we could stand in the middle of a street that strictly belonged to us. Rock Street was the “in place”, “the place where it was at” or as it was known to some, “sweet refuge. The warm weather would bring us out in droves. Struggling and squeezing, we would work our way through those congested door ways in order to gain access to our street . Comfort was found by sitting on the green grass, soaking up the warm rays, while exchanging small talk with our friends. The hallways and rooms might have been dull in color, but they were bright in spirit. And hey, who will forget Mr. Dubois pet skeleton that resided in a locker ,.. “Home of Carl .
