Although we are leaving now the memory of our friends, our teachers, and of Durfee itself, old and new, will remain with us. And, when we look back years later, we shall find, deep within ourselves, that curious mixture of oldness, newness, and friendship that was our senior year at B.M.C. NEVER FADING ... ... OUR MEMORIES OF B. M. C. DURFEE H. S. 85 Our vocational studies enabled us to get involved in many realistic job situations that provided us with the necessary job knowledge for those days after high school. How swiftly they flew by, those days of academ- ic challenges, adolescent fun, and youthful laughter. But in our thoughts we will long remember those valubale lessons learned, those helpful people met, and those memorable moments enjoyed while traveling the road of vocational studies. DIRECTOR OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION Dear Graduates, It is my pleasure to pass on to you some words of wisdom which I inherited from my grandfather. I can think of nothing more valuable to give you. Just be glad you are alive and make everyone else feel that way about it. Make life worth living to yourself and to others. Play the game fairly and don’t try to fool nature. Respect yourself before asking others to respect you. Don't be just good, but be good for something. Don’t be afraid to work between meals and make an honest living. Don't expect to succeed by chance, it takes great effort. Occasionally stand off and look at yourself critically and don’t hesitate to pass an impartial judge- ment. Draw up a code of conduct for your neighbor and then keep it for yourself. When a good cause needs a lift, lend a hand. Never pull down the moral tone of general welfare of the community, but, when truth, justice or the right calls for volun- teers. stand up and be counted. In trying to make more of yourself don’t try to make less of others. Never doubt that this old world is growing better and that God loves the children of men. Finally, when you depart, leave the world a little happier and a little better than you found it. Sincerely, Frances P. Activities at Durfee have always meant a great deal to the students and the 1977-1978 school year was no exception. These after — and occasionally during — school activities were as much a part of Durfee tradition as were the many classes we attended, or the many football and basketball games we enjoyed. Many of the activities taught skills such as acting and painting, while others built a sense of competition and responsibility. Most important, however, is that we will always remember the knowledge gained and the enjoyment had from our activities at B.M.C, Durfee H.S. Durfee. We were able to participate in a variety of sports such as basketball, golf, volleyball, football and so many more. Each sport demanded certain talents, yet two things that were required of everyone were team effort and fair play. Without such team effort and fair play winning would have been meaningless. We can no longer carry that ball, make that basket, or score that point for B.M.C, Durfee, but we will always be there to cheer our Alma Mater on. Go! Go! Hilltoppers! VARSITY TEAM THEY PLAYED HARD! THEY LOSS WITH DIGNITY! It was a tough season on the field for the B.M.C. Durfee H.S. football team. They practiced hard: each day starting in the heat of the summer. They played hard: battling away in the rain and mud, and always away from the home field. They were rewarded with a winless season. The Toppers took each loss with a dignity and sense of gain that comes only with the kind of Durfee Pride that fine coaching can instill upon young athletes. Coach John J. Sullivan, assisted by his coaching staff, worked constantly at improving offensive and defensive efficiency while at the same time maintaining high morale. Some will be back next year, older, wiser, and ready to meet the challenge of football. Again they may encounter defeat, but such is many times the reward of sports. 136 COACH JOHN J. Under the direction of coach Gene Botelho, the soccer team performed admirably on the field. Division One demanded more aggressiveness and team work. Co-Captains Jay Oli- veira and Joe Cabral, backed up by a team that gave their best, worked hard in making aggressive plays and team work a reality on the field. In games against Dennis-Yarmouth, New Bedford, and Barnstable, the Hill Toppers demonstrated their strong kicking and their fast running. Combining their talents, the team was able to execute a variety of plays with accuracy. Leading the team in goals were Joe Cabral, Luis Silvia, and Adilison Teves. The honor of joining the ranks of the All Stars was achieved by Adilison Teves, one of the team’s high scorers. The season was concluded with a 6-8-1 (win- loss-tie) record. With some good players returning next year, an even better season can be expected. 140 THE SENIOR FIVE JOHN BORGES - 15 TONY DUARTE - 19 JAY OLIVEIRA - 12 JOE CABRAL - 10 MARTIN ZENNI - 20 141 Compliments of KMART HARBOUR MALL 142 BASKETBALL Winter, and the sound of the bas- ketball hitting the court could be heard. The Toppers, as during many past seasons, met the de- mands of their fans by making those good plays, guarding those opponents, and scoring those bas- kets. Under the able coaching of Skip Karam, this years season again turned out to be a winning one for the Hilltoppers. This season's record of 20-2 (win- loss) is an end result of a com- bination of good coaching and an outstanding team. Kevin Whiting, breaking a 1000 point record, was an asset to the team. His accurate shooting, averaging 22 points a BASKETBALL BASKETBALL BASKETBALL game, enabled the team to win many of their games. Leading with assists, B.]. McDonald was always their to get that ball and score it home. B.J. averaged 10-12 points a game. Richard Yarbough leading with rebounds, exerted extra effort towards gelling that hall first. Jim Plasski, belter known as the: “ball hawk by his fellow teammates, moved with speed to be where the ball was at. Chuck Wojtowicz added his talents with his aggres- siveness and eight point average. Ofr the bench help came from John Powers who scored that last minute basket to beat Fairhaven, and Greg Brilhante who was a hustler as a guard. This season, because of out- standing team talent and effort, first place in the division was obtained for the fourth time. Under the direction of Coach Beverly Cambra the girls basketball team defied those key injuries and the stiffer competition of a tougher division to tie third place in the division. The Topperettes finished the season with a 9-7 (win-loss) record. Outstanding performances by Co-captains Joan Coogan, Linda Baillargeon, and Susan Shurtleff enabled the team to show spirit on the court. Top scorer with a 20 point average, Joan Coogan was always there to get that rebound. Linda Baillargeon was always in position to set up those winning plays, and Sue Shurtleff backed up Joan by get- ting her share of rebounds. Dave Mazzarella proved to be one of the best defense- men in the conference, His versatility and strength in over all ice play supported a grand team effort. Despite his size, senior Dave Coelho became one of the team's cheer. Much of the team s success was due to the superb goal tending efforts of a rookie, senior Jim Hathaway, who came through for the team time after time. Carl Dias and Barry Goulet finished their last year at Durfee with fine hockey seasons. If there's a shining star in Durfee s future John Hart is it. Sophomore Hart broke the original record of 19 points scored in one season by an individual player by slamming in 36 goals, setting a new record for Durfee Hockey. Also breaking the old record were junior Paul Carey with 19 goals, sophomore Dave Sullivan with 25 goals, and senior Dave Mazza- leaders. How difficult would they have been to travel without our teach- ers? Learning and understanding, made easier because there were those who cared, those who understood. Yes, they were sometimes demanding, but they demanded much so we could gain so much more. We leave behind those who have guided us along, for there are others to take our place, seeking the guidance and understanding that we were fortunate enough to receive. True, our teach- ers must stay behind, but the memories of them will always be with us. SUPERINTENDENT To The Class of 1978 of the B.M.C.
