To so many for so tong the green oak doors of Durfee High School have been opened. Passing through in search of knowl- edge and understanding have been the young minds of those who have matured into productive members of society. As members of the graduating class of '77 we will no longer be a part of the early morning onslaught rushing through those heavy green doors, whose size and weight have become a famil- iar burden to so many. The early morning noises, the last minute rush will be replaced by tranquillity. For as the class of 77 says good-by and heads towards new horizons, so does a city bid its farewell and prepares itself for a new high school. The green oak doors will always be a part of B.M.C. Durfee High School. Using our memories and hearts as keys, the tradition that so well represented Durfee since its birth will not stay lock- ed inside, but will live in the minds of all its graduates. OPENING NEW HORIZONS TABLE OF CONTENTS 1-14 ,..16 ...17 ...19 ... 35 ... 65 ... 91 .182 SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE....... FACULTY................... ACTIVITIES................ SPORTS SENIORS STAFF THE EASTERN HORIZON GLOWS FROM THE RAYS OF THE RISING SUN . ,. THE BEGINNING. 4 THE NEWNESS OF THE DAY ... It is the time for preparing ... thinking of our future ... where to go ... how to get there. THE SUN LIGHTS THE MANY PATHS TO NEW HORIZONS. Ahead lies the unknown, the fears and hopes of untread paths. THE HIGHEST PEAK The noon day sun is high in the sky and so are our hopes ... The past is remembered while the future is realized. 7 We evaluate our thoughts, our desires, and our goals ... we grow in confidence with each passing day. THE CHOSEN PATH Each of us has chosen a path. For some it will be smooth and straight while others will encounter the bumps and curves of reality. The new horizons that await us all can never be totally overcome, but old memories of friends, moments, and Durfee itself can fill the many cavities of frustration and disappointment. WE TRAVEL THE PATH TO NEW HORIZONS The tower bells will no longer ring in our ears, but always will they play on the strings of our hearts. SUN SET We all may take a different path. But all these paths stem from one place — Durfee High School the soul of our knowledge. The shadows of the setting sun shoot across our paths, hindering our view and hampering our travel. AN END IS A START OF A NEW BEGINNING. As the sun sets on the shoulders of the class of 1977, it also sets on the tow- er of B.M.C Durfee H.S. The setting sun in the west marks the end of our school days and the end of a tradi- tion, however we know that in the east the sun will again rise to mark a new begin- ning. A graduating class and a school .,. hand and hand heading for new horizons. 14 SUPERINTENDENT TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1977 My congratulations to you who have earned a B.M.C. Durfee High School Diploma. This is your commencement, an ending that will be nostalgic and a beginning of a life that should lead to health and happiness. You will be spiritually, mentally, and physically well, because you have prepared yourselves fully for the future during your days at B.M.C. Durfee High School. You are ready, if you have learned about yourselves — if you have conquered the basic concepts of reading, writing and arithmetic. It is important that you have developed an appreciation of doing each task you approach to the very best of your abilities. Do you know that materialism is not the most important thing in life? A keen insight into the worth and dignity of your fellow man is the path to ultimate success. It is the sincere hope of your administrators and faculty that we have afforded you, as young adults, the opportunity to establish those building blocks that will allow you to reserve for yourselves a finer future. Robert). Nagle Superintendent of Schools 18 PRINCIPAL Congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 1977. It is my sincere hope that all your experiences at Durfee High have been rewarding and productive. May your past three years serve as a catapult for all future endeavors. You have achieved a measure of success and now have the opportunity to grow in our complex society. May your future be fruitful. Edward P. Morgan Principal 19 LEONARD G. But a season cannot be regarded only by the win- loss column. Faced with a tough schedule, excellent opo- nents, and plagued by injuries throughout the entire season the players did an outstanding job in keeping their morale, emotions, and spirit at the point necessary to make a contest out of each game. Although the team remained winless the efforts put forth by members of the team, coached by a former student of Durfee, john J. Sullivan, displayed courage and fortitude. On the defensive side tri-captains Wayne Riley and Ron Aguiar, combined with senior Chris Frank, were exemplary. On the offensive side the work of senior Bill Sylvia and junior quarterback )im Murohy was also commendable. 67 TRI-CAPTAINS 25 - Ron AGUIAR 34 — Wayne RILEY 63 - lack SARAIVA B.M.C. DESIRE! FORTITUDE! 69 70 BASKETBALL HILLTOPPERS BASKETBALL HILLTOPPERS BASKETBALL HILLTOPPERS THE 1976-77 STATE CHAMPS Basket! Basket! We want a basket! And that is exactly what our Varsity boys gave us. Excitement in the bleachers was at times bursting as our Hilltoppers, under the leadership of coach Karam, again won the S.E.M. Conference championship. The Topper's successful season can be summed up in two names, Kenny and Kevin. The offensive power provided by these two players, senior Ken Fiola and junior Kevin Whiting have kept the Toppers out of the loss column entirely. Both averaged over 20 points a game and they also did the bulk of the job in the rebounding department. Such individual efforts can explain successful wins; but when you win games by 30 and 40 points, something else has to be going for you. The extra strength and assistance needed to win big came from the three juniors who rounded out the starting five: jim Plasski, B.J. McDonald, and Chuck Wojtowitz. Their contributions, though shadowed by Ken and Kevin, were an integral part of the team's success. Though lost to an injury for much of the season, Rick Varbough should be back in time to help the Toppers' cause in the 1977 tourney. Team spirit: that's what our Varsity Basketball team was all about. The Hilltoppers, by combining that team spirit with talent and good coaching, once again proved themselves outstanding in the tradition of Basketball at B.M.C. Durfee High School. Durfee ended the season with a 26-0 record. 71 Michael FACCHfANO Kenneth FIOLA, Capt. Harvey LITTMAN THE SENIOR TRIO - TRIO - TRIO! Compliments of SAWYERS CAMPUS SHOP - FALL RIVER QUINCY ... HOCKEY TEAM Assistant Captain, Glenn SOUZA Captain, Raymond CORREIA Assistant Captain, Dave MAZZARELLA This year's hockey team showed vast improvement over the previous three years. The team, under the leadership of coach Bob Richards, moved ahead from the disappointment of last season to compile a respectable 5-3-4 (won, lost, tied) record. Such a record meant a number two position in Division Two of the Southeastern Massachusetts Confer- ence. Instrumental in bringing about such inprovements over last year's record were seniors Raymond Correia, Glenn Souza, goalie Robert Laferriere and junior defenseman Dave Mazzarella. Highlights of the season included a 5-2 win over Connolly High School. Such was the second win over the inter-city rivals in four seasons. A superb job by goalie Robert Laffer- riere in which he accomplished 23 saves, one being a penalty shot late in the third period, enabled the Toppers to block Bourne from taking a 2-1 lead. The Bourne - Durfee game was one of many in which the Toppers worked hard on the ice to bring about a successful hockey season. With the return of five juniors and seven sophomores next sea- son, the Toppers should be even more of a power house on the ice. 77 Robert PELOQUIN 78 Robert LAFERR1ERE Glenn SOUZA 79 THE B.M.C. DURFEE HILLTOPPERS PLAYING STRONG ON THE ICE! GIRLS' BASKETBALL Under the direction of Beverly Cambra the girls basket- ball team won their third consecutive Massachusetts Divi- sion One championship. Strength and stamina - the for- mula for a good basketball team — are two ingredients which the Topperettes certainly possessed this season. They put in all they had plus an extra helping from their coach, Beverly Cambra. Such efforts enabled them to breeze to an 18-0 over-all record behind the sharp-shooting of seniors JoAnne Medeiros and Carol Lynch. The team defeated all opponents including a double- overtime thriller in one of their last games; a 56-51 win over Wareham. Such tenacity and fortitude demonstrated in beating Wareham in overtime serves as an example of the girls' spirit and winning attitude. Such attitude received additional strength from the superior coaching of Beverly Cambra. This varsity team also had something that many teams lack — the power of a bench. In fact, the starters could probably be substituted by the bench and the end results still be victorious. 81 WITH HARD WORK Coach — Beverly CAMBRA AND DETERMINATION COACH CAMBRA SCORED HIGH IN LEADERSHIP WHILE THE TOPPERETTES SCORED HIGH IN VICTORIES! Hard practice under coach Proulx brought each girl closer to perfection in aim and agility. Being new, coach Proulx had to work hard in order to take a last place finisher from last season and get it to ac- quire a 10-2 division record this sea- son. The finale came in the game against Westport H.S. A win for ei- ther team would make them divi- sion champs. The Topperettes could not close it out and had to take the silver crown. Under the leadership of co-captains Jo Ann Medeiros and Cheryl Rasieleski the team exhibited a beautiful show of teamwork and fair sportsmanship. 1st Row: Diane COURNOYER, Susan ALMEIDA, 2nd Row; JoAnn MEDEIROS, Cheryl RASIELESKI, Melinda MELLO, 3rd Row: Carol LYNCH, Donna CURT 85 86 1976-1977 WRESTLING TEAM The muscular matmen of the 1976-77 B.M.C. Durfee H.S. wrestling team again pinned themselves another exciting season. With the interest shown and the desire displayed by the Durfee matmen, coach jack Springer was able to put forth tough competition against all competitors. In moving from Division One to Division Two, coach Jack Springer's wrestlers encountered tough opponents and a more difficult schedule. From the start of the season it was truly an up hill climb all the way. However, the Durfee matmen are used to a tough chal- lenge and so they demonstrated by compiling a winning 9-6 record. Senior matmen Chris Frank, Tom Hopkins, Ray Di- Carlo, and Bill Worsely along with juniors Dave Cervasio and Mike Proulx led the 1976-77 wrestling squad to its winning season. Wrestling, since its birth at Durfee has been drawing more fans. This season found the crowd growing in size, enthusiasm, and loyalty for the sport of wrestling. The team finished fifth this season and with at least half of the squad returning for next season, a winning season should again be the end result. A WINNING SEASON ... ZMUDA OUR SOPHOMORE YEAR NIXON RESIGNS THERE'S A FORD IN THE WHITE HOUSE INFLATION STILL LINGERS 168 Our big entrance ... uncertainty mixed with anxiety accompany us as we rush through those heavy green doors. The question ... what will our high school years bring??? Registration, detention, bells and more bells, ... hey it's time for lunch ... long lunch lines ... a short twenty minutes. Spirit week and the horizon appears red and black ... hey it's the fifties again and we stroll down the corridor way of yesterday's dreams. Eyes open everyone, there's a streaker on the loose! Christmas arrives and H.R. 425 wins the Christmas decora- ting contest... hey who threw that snowball????? P.I.P.E. is a success ... Sam Vine and the MIME are enjoyed by all ... spring hits and the Sound of Music is presented by the music dept ... a new high school still lingers and lingers. The outside world ... President Nixon resigns ... President Ford ... unelected ... inflation means less for the dollar . .. at least we got gasoline!! june???? It can't be already! Friends say see you later ... it's full speed ahead ... ahead to what ... to where??? BEGINNING NEW ... PREPARING FOR THE MANY PATHS TO NEW 169 HORIZONS Back again not as beginners ... Mr. Morgan becomes principal ... Mr. Kiley becomes our new vice-principal. What ... in school longer ... 2:30! Our junior year is a mixture of pet rocks , mood rings , U.S. History, English II, and driver's education. Well the Red Sox won ... Durfee hoopsters almost make it ... the female hoopsters win strong ... spirit day is a success at alumni field. OUR JUNIOR YEAR 170 A NEW PRINCIPAL MOOD RINGS BICENTENNIAL NIGHT R.A. MCWHIRRS . . . Winter comes and the cold winds blow and the snow falls heavy ... worst winter in many years! We keep moving on ... getting close to our exit day ... The Odd Couple a big hit ... Fiddler on the Roof real great! ... X period loved by all. Hey what time is it ... will those docks ever work???? Fall River gets a tax hike . .. new school still lingers! We may forget the War of 1812, the law of supply and demand, those square roots, or that bookkeeping equation ... friends, the pep rallies, the exciting lunches, and those carefree walks home wilt never be tost in the passing of time. The senior year brought with it 'The Gong Show , Disco Duck ... college applications attention please . .. please move ... a green Buick ... license number ... ! But most of all our senior year represented an end to three memorable years. We are older but are we wiser??? We have studied hard but has it been worth it???? Yes it was!! We will always be proud to say that we graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School. THE HILLTOPPERS! ... right on. PRESIDENT CARTER ... SO MUCH SNOW! DURFEE STUDENTS GROW RESTLESS! 1974-1977 LOOKING BACK WE SAY GOOD-BY. LOOKING AHEAD WE SAY HELLO 173 TO A NEW HORIZON. 1976 1977 AS STUDENTS WE LEARNED ABOUT LIFE, ABOUT OTHERS, AND MOST OF ALL, ABOUT OURSELVES. As we look back on our last year at Durfee we remember the events that took place around us. jimmy Carter became president, the Argo Merchant lost a valuable cargo, the Swine Flu innoculations became a moot topic, and a cup of coffee sold for 30 cents. Closer to our hearts, perhaps, were the completion of our new city hall, the unusually severe cold spell, and something that affected our parents more than us, a higher property tax. Some might view such events as hindering and in some cases halting our travel on those paths yet to be traveled and explored. But such is not the case! We stand ready to leave what has become so well known and to face those challenges that surely await us. OUR THOUGHTS • OUR HOPES ... Love isn't iove unless it's shared. With the impending belief that the 1977 Record Book might possibly be a final edition, it seemed fitting and proper that we should distinguish it from all others. We therefore changed much of the structure of the book, while trying to retain a classical undertone. It was our sincere hope that this year book would fulfill what we believed to be the basic concept of a year book and that being a collection of memorable moments. A year book becomes a reality because of contributions on the parts of many. My thanks extend out to )ohn Carrier of Herff Jones Publishing Co,, Loring Studios our official photographer, Bob Ryan our student photographer, the hard working staff, and R. W. Pineault, our ever assisting advisor. As the sun sets on our high school careers, so may it also set on Durfee. The sounds of students moving through those crowded hallways may soon belong to the past. Yet, the building will remain an ever constant reminder of our youth, and an object of great respect.
