Durfee High School, 1974: The major and paramount objective of a Public School System is to produce a good citi- zen—one who is defined as a person who works effectively as an individual or with a group to solve problems that face him and the group now. It is this kind of good citizen who helps to create and adjust to the process of orderly change, a condition inherent in our system that was designed by our forefathers. You now approach graduation from Durfee High School and I offer my sincere congratu- lations and best wishes for your success in attaining the objective of citizenship for which you have been chosen. Your training at Durfee has demonstrated to you that true success will be measured in your becoming active members of your com- munity and in how great will be your contri- bution to the improvement of your society. You, as an educated Durfee graduate, can help shape the future of our country and I know that you will assume this responsibility with dignity. Robert J. Katersky 4 Indeed one of the most enjoyable assign- ments of a high school principal is the oppor- tunity to salute members of a graduating class, and so I hasten to join with your parents, rela- tives, teachers and friends in adding my sin cerest congratulations. Whether you are entering the world of con tinuing education or the world of work, it would seem to you, I am surer that it is one replete with indecisiveness, turmoil, and so-called new morality. Nonetheless, it remains a world which has expectations of leadership from you and so I urge you to take up this grave responsibility with utmost care. Never be satisfied with things as they are; rather be determined to improve them. Seek not to find a niche in this world re- maining complacent while everything around you seems to be crumbling. Seek instead to de- monstrate your dissatisfaction with the pre- sent. Work with a seriousness of purpose to mend the fissures, bring peace and justice to all humanity, insist upon the highest morality, and never waiver in your search for knowledge and truth. Join your thousands of outstanding pre decessors in making us proud to have been touched, if but briefly, by you. With each of you goes a part of us, and so I say to you, ad multos annos. James F. Where were the sunshine and the blue skies that made him so happy? 6 7 Black storm clouds haunted the skies and cold biting winds chilled the air. When the rain began, the child ran for shelter - that of his favorite tree, 8 Covered by the security that the sturdy tree provided, the child escaped into a peaceful sleep, a sleep that deepened as the storm heightened. Thunder and lightning could not rouse the child from his dreams; he dreamed of freedom - the freedom of being young, without worries or responsibilities. 9 10 11 Gradually the storm subsided. A break in the clouds let through a ray of sunlight which fell upon the little boy. The child awakened, confused. 12 Was it the same day, or had a new one begun? 13 14 15 IN MEMORIAM JUDY FLEMING February 25, 1955 - September 10, 1971 16 MUK1AM SENIORS SUSAN M. ABREAU JESSE M. After back-to-back losses to New Bedford and Taunton, the Hifltoppers re- bounded with an eight game winning streak which included victories over New Bedford and Taunton, their two toughest rivals. Durfee qualified for the Massachusetts State Tournament by easily handling Bishop $ tang. After beating Brockton, in the opening game, the Fall Riverites ended their season with a heartbreaking loss to Stoughton. Stoughton later lost in the semifinals. Frank Ferraz, Bill Coury, and John Vitullo all played their last game for Durfee against Stoughton. 98 99 100 vW 101 102 VARSITY BASKETBALL SCORES Durfee Opponent St. John’s 50 62 Holy Name 57 42 Brockton 73 56 Rogers 69 44 East Providence 49 50 New Bedford 62 69 Taunton 44 64 Attleboro 72 67 Barnstable 71 4f Somerset 77 66 Stang 66 50 New Bedford 69 68 Holy Name 65 45 Taunton 69 48 Attleboro 52 40 Barnstable 55 74 Stang 71 66 Somerset 79 64 Tournament Play Brockton 63 45 Stoughton 51 53 103 CHEERLEADERS SENIORS: Meribeth Anderson, Co-Head Linda Sowersby, Co-Head Florine Freitas Louise Lemaire Anne Wildnauer JUNIORS: JoAnne Farrissey Susan Gancarski Rosemarie Pereira Sharon Reitano Eileen Sullivan Cindy Wilson 104 FLAGTWIRLER5 SENIORS: Nancy Dusoe, Head Pamela Labbe Lori Moniz Corinne LaFleur JUNIORS: Lynn BeneWdes Alice Arruda Joanne Parise Kathi Rapoza Dottie Arruda 105 OUfirF - 1URFEE DURFEE, UURFEE Durfee. DURFEE DURFEE DURFEE OiRFEE OURFEi DURFEE FOOTBALL The Durfee High School football team stag- gered through a tough 1973 gridiron campaign. Hampered by a difficult schedule, Coach Ed Keyes' troops managed only three victories against six defeats. After an impressive opening day victory over Barnstable, the team dropped four in a row be fore defeating Boston Latin. Then, after making it two in a row by drubbing Chicopee, the team lost a close contest against Attleboro to end the regular season campaign. The most heartbreaking Durfee loss came at the hands of archrival New Bedford. The game featured a one man show by New Bed- ford's Ron Huston. Unfortunately, when the dust settledt Durfee found itself on the short end of a 21-6 defeat. 106 107 Compliments of M. SARDINHA SONS. PLUMBING 108 Compliments of R. E. After a shaky start, the girls finished the season with three straight victories over Taunton, Coyle Cassidy, and Sacred Hearts Academy. However, there were two opponents that were too much for the Hilltoppers. Bishop Ger- rard and Somerset High School both defeated the Fall Riverites twice. The team was coached by Margot Lavoie. This season was a rough one due to the fact that there were only two returning seniors, co-captains Pat Petit and Cindy O’Connell. The squad was for the most part very inexperienced. However, despite the inexperience, Coach Lavoie stated “they did very well ' The teams play a 2 out of 3 set to determine the victor. Among the teams that the Toppers defeated were New Bedford, Case, Fairhaven, Norton, and Old Rochester. One of the high- lights of the season was when Durfee handed the Somerset team their only loss on the season. However, the Fall Riverites then lost three in a row to tough competition. They were downed by Apponequet, New Bedford, and di- vision champion Taunton. After mustering a tie with New Bedford Voke, the Hilltoppers finished the season in a blaze of glory, climaxed by a stunning 3 2 vie tory over Bishop Connolly, that knocked the Cougars out of first place and paved the way for the champions from Taunton. The team, coached by Jack Springer had a 16 meet schedule, plus post season activities. Scheduled were schools from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The post sea- son activities included the Sectional Champion- ships at Marshfield and the State Champion- ships at Springfield. Durfee started the season by winning only one of the first six meets. Things started rolling after that with the Toppers going four meets in a row without a loss and ending up the season with 6 wins 8 losses and 2 ties. The most impressive meet of the season had to be the 68-0 trouncing of Portsmouth Abbey, at Portsmouth. The first shutout of the year for Durfee, it was a convincing end to the season. The Sectionals were held at Marshfield, Mass, to determine the individual champion- ships. Participants from 20 schools in each of the 13 weight classes wrestled for the Section- al Championship, with the top 6 in each class going to the State Championships. All thirteen of the Toppers varsity wrestlers qualified for the Sectionals, and, team-wise, Durfee placed 14th out of 20, excellent for a first year team. Co-Capt. Ed Medeiros, Kevin Costa, and Glenn Perry qualified for the States, with Kevin com- ing out 7th in the state. The first year also proved to be the last for 6 varsity seniors Co-Capt. Ed Medeiros, and Jim Bessette, Don Frank, Ed Lacombe, and Dave Jolivet. Wholey 159 For most, this Record Book represents the memories of their high school years, but for those involved in the making of the book, it also represents many months of hard work. I extend deep thanks to those of the Record Book staff who were so dedicated. To our faculty advisor, Mr. Gerard Mack, whose guid- ance and dedication were never-ending, goes my deepest appreciation for the countless hours and efforts spent on the book. I thank Mr. Joe Norris of Dodge-Murphy Studios and Wayne Camara who are responsible for most of the pictures. And last but not least, I wish to thank the members of the Hilltop staff for their valuable assistance. JAYE KRASNOW
