However, in their third game of the season at Alumni Field, they suffered their first loss. During the three game stretch that the Toppers were on the road, they defeated 2 out of 3 opposing teams, Archbishop Williams: 7-0, and Coyle-Cassidy: 6-2. By a score of 21-6, Durfee suffered its first road defeat at the hands of Boston Latin. Durfee had only two games left to play, the first of which was Attleboro. The Toppers obtained their third and final loss, 12-7, at this outing. The last game of the season came upon us at Alumni Field. November 23, 1972 is a day the class of 73” will long remember. The Durfee Hilltop- pers faced their rivals, The New Bedford Whalers, in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game. The Toppers were the underdogs, since they had not defeated New Bedford in eight years, but with their skill and a brilliant team effort, they won the last and most important game of the season for the students of B.M.C.D. After the season's finish, the Lt. Donald Trevisano Memorial Trophy was presented to Paul Dussault, as Durfee’s outstanding line- man during this past football season. With his help, and the effort of the whole team, we were able to achieve 4 shut-outs during the season. 114 115 Durfee Opponent 6 Barnstable 0 Home 28 Feehan 0 Home 7 Falmouth 10 Home 7 Archbishop Wms. 0 Away 6 Coyle-Cassidy 2 Away 6 Boston Latin 21 Away 7 Attleboro 12 Home 7 New Bedford 0 Home 74 45 116 117 118 119 SOCCER The Durfee Soccer team had a good sea- son this year with a 5-1-2 (won, tied, lost) re- cord. The Toppers won the opening game 4-2 over New Bedford Voke and tied 2 2 with Diman Voke in their second game. They also won their third game of the season when they played Bishop Connolly, ending with a score of 3-1. In the next two games, Durfee lost to New Bedford 4-2 and 4-1, respectively. These were the only games of the season which they lost. Although they lost two straight games, the Toppers came back stronger than ever to shut out Bishop Connolly 3-0, and to defeat Law- rence High 4-2 and Diman Voke 2-1. 120 Durfee Opponent 4 New Bedford Yoke 2 Home 2 Diman Yoke 2 Away 3 Bishop Connolly 1 Home 2 New Bedford High 4 Home 1 New Bedford High 4 Away 3 Bishop Connolly 0 Away 4 Lawrence High 2 Home 2 Diman Yoke 1 Away 2A 16 121 CROSS-COUNTRY The Durfee Track Team had a rough sea- son this year because of its schedule, hold- ing all meets with exceptionally strong teams, several of which were league and State Divi- sional Champions. They were an extremely young and inexperienced team, but the Toppers placed all their effort into each meet. In Invitational Meets, Durfee finished fifth out of eight Schools in the Michael J. Scilia Memorial Race and had the best individual finish. They also did well in the Fall River Re- creation Department Race where a B.M.C.D. representative finished third, and in the Dart- mouth Invitational Meet. 122 Dartmouth 16 Durfee 43 Portsmouth Abbey 15 Durfee 45 New Bedford 15 Durfee 40 Connolly 15 Durfee 45 Case 18 Durfee 43 Diman 15 Durfee 40 Southeast Regional Durfee 40 Seekonk 15 Durfee 43 109 339 123 BASKETBALL The 1972-73 basketball squad had a fan- tastic season with an over all record of 18 wins and 4 losses, achieving the highest total of points in the history of Durfee basketball. The great team effort of all the basketball squad members allowed the Toppers to qualify to play in the Eastern Massachusetts Tech Tournament at the Boston Garden. The Toppers came on strong winning their first eight games straight, but the eighth game was a battle of skill. They finally defeated Brock- ton by 1 point with a score of 49-48. They then lost their first game of the sea- son to New Bedford 53-60, but came back and won the next two matches. They were defeated by St. John's and Holy Name in their next two bouts, but rebounded and won the remaining six games on the schedule. The Hilltoppers achieved their highest score of the season when they played Boston Tech at Tech's court and recorded a victory of 100-62. Gaining their fourteenth win of the season when they defeated Lawrence High 87-54, they qualified to play in the state com- petition. This, plus the overtime victory over Boston English, 91-87, and the last game of the season, a victory over Boston Tech, were the highlights of the second half of the season. In post-season action, the Toppers won the first two play off games. They defeated Stoughton, their second victory, with a 20-0 record and their league title. This qualified them to play in the semi-finals at the Boston Garden against Taunton High. They were then defeated by Taunton, who later won the champ- ionship, in their last game of the 1972 - 73 season at the Garden. The members of the Durfee team were honored in many ways this year. The George Kaplan Memorial Trophy, which is given to the most valuable player on the Durfee team, was awarded this year to Tom Gastall, a 6'3” senior, for his outstanding all-around performance. It was awarded to Bill Mosa, as a junior, last year. Selected by a committee of coaches of five area schools was Tom Gastall as all-scho- lastic forward. Bill Mosa was chosen as all- scholastic center, Frank Ferraz as all-scholastic guard, and Glen Machado received honorable mention. Coach Tom Karam received the honor of being coach of the year. 124 Durfee Opponent 73 Somerset 51 Away 64 Braintree 57 Away 73 Bishop Connolly 47 Away 75 Bishop Feehan 58 Away 57 Rogers 54 Away 66 Middletown 48 Away 73 Boston English 68 Away 49 Brockton 48 Away 53 New Bedford 60 Away 71 Holy Name 64 Home 76 Attleboro 67 Away 59 St. John’s 60 Away 58 Holy Name 63 Away 68 New Bedford 56 Home 100 Boston Tech 62 Away 78 Brockton 56 Home 87 Lawrence High 54 Home 91 Boston English 87 Home 81 Boston Tech 60 Home Tech Tourney 68 North Quincy 58 60 Stoughton 57 66 Taunton 84 125 1344 1319 126 127 128 129 CHEER-LEADERS Betsey Cole — co-head Debbie Cole — co-head Jeanne Crofton Francine Freitas Junice Ponte Pat Walsh Maribeth Anderson Florine Freitas Louise Lemaire Linda Sowersby Annie Wildnauer ADVISOR: Mrs. Elizabeth Sullivan 130 FLAG-TWIRLERS Linda Mazzarella-Head Joy Martin Debra Terceira Holly Simmons Rita Bam ford Nancy Dusoe Pam Labbe Lori Moniz ADVISOR: Mrs. Eleanor Cote 131 MAJORETTES Sandy Reitano, Head Donna Clarke M ary bet h Mello Diane Pelletier Marybeth Patota Debbie Medeiros Marilyn Chown Jane Coogan Phyllis Kay ADVISOR: Mrs. Eleanor Cote 132 GIRLS' BASKETBALL The Durfee Girl's Basketball season did not end in the manner the girls would have liked it to, Although compiling an 8-3 record, they were unable to qualify for the regional tourna- ment. This season was very competitive but the Hi ltoppers erased most deficits by the balanced performance of each team member. They exploded with 115 points, a school record, against Sacred Hearts Academy and outscored their opponents by a 660 to 501 margin. The starting five were consistent in both their offensive and defensive drivet while the substitute players combined effort, deter- mination, spirit, and skill to carry on their winning style. Members of this year's varsity squad were co-captains Cathy and Chris Farrell, Marianne Bonalewicz, Susie Korber, Joyce Faria, Kathy Kaegael, Lois Tepper, Dale Dawicki, Pat Petit, and Ora Williams. The year's high scoring hon- ors went to Marianne Bonalewicz with a 19.6 average per game. 133 Durfee Opponent 63 Taunton 50 115 Sacred Hearts Academy 35 60 Attleboro 36 48 Westport 43 40 New Bedford 45 46 Sacred Hearts Academy 27 54 Dartmouth 37 39 Feehan 54 58 New Bedford 61 69 Westport 57 68 Dartmouth 56 1 60 501 134 v VOLLEYBALL The Girls’ Volleyball team compiled an impressive record of six wins and two losses. Their initial independent schedule provided competition and an opportunity for each mem- ber to play. A disadvantage which did not seem to handicap the team was that all the games were scheduled away: The girls posted victories over Bishop Gerrard, Sacred Hearts Academy, Dartmouth, Old Rochester, Coyle-Cassidy, and Brockton. Their setbacks were by Attleboro and Somerset. Balanced scoring, skill, and spirit combined for a rewarding season. Members of the squad included tri-cap tains Cathy and Chris Farrell and Pat Murphy, Rose Marcella, Jayne Turcotte, Diane Mulcahy, Pat Petit, Cindy O'Connell, Karen Silva, Ora Williams, Sue Gancarski, Angela Assad, Debra Couture, Sharon Reitano, JoAnne Farrissey. 135 Durfee Opponent 12 Attleboro 15 13 Attleboro 15 15 Bishop Gerrard 3 15 Bishop Gerrard 7 15 Dartmouth 1 15 Dartmouth 3 15 Sacred Hearts Academy 7 15 Sacred Hearts Academy 7 16 Brockton 14 3 Brockton 15 15 Brockton 8 15 Coyle-Cassidy 10 15 Coyle-Cassidy II 15 Somerset 8 II Somerset 15 9 Somerset 15 15 Old Rochester 2 15 Old Rochester 6 244 162 136 FACULTY AND STAFF 137 LEONARD G.
