M. C. DURFEE CLASS OF 1972: It is not only a pleasure, but a special honor, to have been invited to share my thoughts with you on your graduation from B. M. C. Durfee High School. Your graduation is a happy day for you and for your parents. It is your finest hour, and we also can truthfully join with you in saying that it is our finest hour. This is an important time in your lives. You have made a major accomplishment. You have reached a desirable goal. I am sure there is a glow of satisfaction within each of you; this is a reward for the success you have achieved. You have had to exercise effort, make some amount of sacrifice. You have had to have endurance and perseverance; but isn't it worth while? Aren't you glad you are now graduating and that you have made the grade? Remember that this day can mark the beginning of a series of successes in your lifetime which can give you similar satisfaction, for you now are aware that the secret of that success is you, not only from the standpoint of the ability you possess but especially because of your perseverance. Thomas Edison once said that 75% of the world's failures would not have failed at all if they had kept at what they were trying to do. Our greatest weakness, he said lies in giving up. The way to success is to try just one more time.” Another important factor in this matter of success is the ability to get along with people, ft is good to reflect upon this quality. John D. Rockefeller once said, I will pay more for the ability to deal with people than for any other single thing.” Most of you, I am sure, already have future careers in mind. Some of you are thinking about industry, law, medicine, teaching or the ministry. Whatever may be your goal, don’t expect to reach it in one big jump There are many rounds to a fight, and a good fighter stays in the ring. In the struggle for life, the first condition of victory is to stay in the ring, to hold on to your ideas and your ideals, to keep your eyes on the goal. Remember you can change the world for better and for worse by the power of your personality, the kindness and charm of your character, the strength of your will and the wisdom of your vision. The world needs each of you as never before. Give of yourselves, the best that you have, and the best will come back to you. ROBERT J. NAGLE Superintendent FACULTY Thomas W. The extent to which a school equips its young men and women to work and live comfortably in a society of many differ- ent cultural, racial and ethnic groups is an indication of the philosophy of the faculty and administration. I trust you have all pro- fited from your experiences at Durfee, May you be successful in all your future endeavors. THOMAS W, HAMMOND PRINCIPAL Frederick M. Lindquist Brenda J. Lloyd William F. The Hilltoppers started the season by defeating Barnstable 14-13. However, in their next four outings, the Toppers had three losses, one win defeat- ing Bishop Stang 9-0. Next came New Bedford Voke and Taun- ton, and once again the Hilltoppers proved their strength by shutting out both by scores of 52-0 and 28-0, respectively. The final two games put an end to all hopes of winning the final B.C.L. crown; how- ever, as the team lost to league-leading Attle- boro 12-6 and to New Bedford by 21-8. 82 83 Durfee Opponent 14 Barnstable 13 6 Bishop Feehan 7 9 Bishop Stang 0 6 Archbishop Williams 7 3 Msgr. The Hilltoppers continued their winning ways through the first half of the regular sea- son losing only to eventual league-winner New Bedford High. The first half was highlighted by three two-point victories and a 105-63 win over New Bedford Voke. The team then won five of the remaining seven games, losing to Attleboro and New Bedford High. The high- light of the half was a one-point overtime victory over Bishop Stang. After dropping the season opener 5-0 to New Bedford, the team scored three shutouts in a row before bowing to Diman 2-1. The next three games saw the Hilltoppers score nine times to their oppon- ents' 0, and they finished with a 6-2 first half record. Driving for a tournament berth the Hill- toppers were foiled, dropping a 5-2 decision to New Bedford and tieing Attleboro 1-1 After falling short of tournament require- ments, the Hilltoppers continued to keep the pressure on, and won the remaining five games. The Hilltoppers were denied sole possession of second place, however, as the league com- mittee declared that the Hilltoppers used an ineligible player for two games, and that the Hilltoppers had to forfeit those two games, putting them in a tie for second place with Dimon, who, incidentally, lodged the protest which led to the investigation.
