It is my hope that you will bring credit to your- selves and to your school and City, but I am aware of the burden you carry as you face a worried and troublesome world. You have succeeded in meeting the re- quirements for a high school diploma, but you are facing an ever-expanding field of learning that should not frighten you. It is my hope that you will continue to learn and grow in terms of what you can do for others as well as what you will accomplish for your- selves. B.M.C. Durfee High School has given you an opportunity to think boldly and creatively and you must now develop a sense of res- ponsibility for your own conduct as it relates to your seach and understanding of the mean- ing of trust, authority, freedom, beauty, love and truth. These are the virtues that can make you free; and I ask you to remember them as you rush eagerly into your exciting post-graduate lives. From this day forward, each individual member of the Class of 1971 will be res- ponsible for “doing his own thing.“ Best wishes. ROBERT J. NAGLE Superintendent of Schools FACULTY Thomas W. O'Hearn Walter Wal James W. Wholey Joseph Sirois Education is a life-long pro cess. From the moment we become aware of our exist- ence, we begin to learn and grow in understanding of ourselves. We discover that other peo- ple, as individuals, are the greatest part of our learning process. 7 The most important part of our education does not take place in a classroom, although it is this phase which begins to shape us as individuals. Rather, it is through our rela- tionships with others that we acquire real knowledge. 8 Throughout our lives, we are faced with situations which force us to realize our limitations. We learn to depend upon others to complement our weaknesses and, in doing so, we share our strength. ! d - 9 Every experience helps to determine the way in which we grow. Our lives are in- fluenced, sometimes unconsciously, by others who, like ourselves, are in the process of growing. 10 Occasionally, our paths will cross, our lives will touch, and we will realize just how much another life can affect our own. ii These three yearsnave been only a part of our learning process. Our development will continue long after our formal educa- tion has ended. IN MEMORIAM MR. EDWARD B. DOWNS Died October 6, 1970 MR. CARMI A. A school is a means of socializa- tion, the process by which society introduces its members to the standards expected of them. Conse- quently, a school is merely a reflection of society itself, and is subject to the merits and flaws of that larger structure. Durfee High School is no exception. The items on the opposite page are problems afflicting it, all other schools, and our entire culture. This book is dedicated to diose individuals who, not content to dismiss these ills as a necessary part of life today, are attempting to remedy them. ' vi :■ ■ npd IK.1 'nYv ► o ,• ■ -.1 y, . In their first gome the Hilltoppers showed they were □ strong team by crushing Christopher Columbus 32-0. Their next four games pro- duced three ties and one victory, Feehan and Stang both tied Durfee with scores of 8-8 and 0-0 respectively. The Hilltoppers then moved to the Cape to play Bourne. They beat the Canalmen 30-16. Another tie followed with Coyle, the Durfee defense proved strong as they held off a last minute scoring oppor- tunity by Coyle to preserve an 8-8 tie. New Bedford Voke came to Alumni Field for Durfee's next game. The Red and Black played their best game of the season as they romped past Voke 42-0. The last three games of the season were against the powers of the league, Taunton, Attleboro and New Bedford. Although Durfee played well, they dropped the remaining games. 52 DURFEE OPPONENT 32 CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS 0 8 BISHOP FEEHAN 8 0 BISHOP STANG 0 30 BOURNE 16 8 MSGR. Although the Toppers had a very suc- cessful season they failed to qualify by one game. With a nine win and five lost Bristol County League tally, their overall record was an impressive 13-6. The Hilltoppers opened the season away, overcoming a tough Middletown team in a hard fought contest. They came home for the next two games to defeat Warwick and Rogers. Durfee then played in the annual Rogers Christmas Tournament, and reached third place, losing to previously unbeaten Central of Providence, then beating Rogers for the second time of the season in the con- solation game. The Hilltoppers opened their Bristol County League campaign with a win over Taunton but dropped two of their next three to Stang and New Bedford. Victories against Coyle, New Bedford Vocational. Feehan, and Taunton followed before they lost again to Stang. In order to qualify for the Tech Tour- nament Durfee could now afford only one loss in the five remaining games, but lost twice in two bitter strugales against New Bed- ford High and New Bedford Voke. High scorer for Durfee was Jim Griffiths with a 17.9 season average. Jim was also chosen for the first string AII B.C.L. team, the only Hilltopper to do so. This ques- ’ P! e un 'l we decided that it was unnecessary for us to compete with last year's Record course, the Class of 1970 would consider their Record Book better than any other, be- cBne 1970 was their year. Now, 1971 is our year, and to us, the 1971 Record Book is the best any Durfee Class has ever produced. We decided to change the cover material in order to make a more attractive and in- teresting book. The club write-ups were left out because the Editorial Board felt that it would be better to show each club's activities through candid shots. A new feature in this year's Book, is the Class History, which tells the story of our years at Durfee.. However, only the sophomore and junior years are in the Record Book, the senior year will appear in tne Supplement, published dur- ing the summer. As is the case every year, there are many people who, in one way or another, assisted in putting together this Record Book. I would like to thank our Faculty Advisors, Mr. Gerard A. Mack, and Mr. Paul A. Brouil- lard for their guidance. I am grateful to Mr. Kelly and to all the teachers who, in the hectic hours before the final deadline, allowed staff members to leave class . I would like to thank Business Manager, Ken Raymond, and his two assistants, Cindy Wal- dron and Fil Coroa, for putting together an imaginative and well-designed advertisement section, which enabled us to keep the cost of the book at a minimum. I am especially appreciative of the outside photographer Michael Mui '69, who came from Boston to take pictures for us, ancMJavid Springer '70, who although he did not have to come so far, was available at a moment's notice. tNmust also thank Rober jGreen '69, who let us use the B. C. C. darkroom to develop pictures. x Finally, my Editorial Board — What would I have done without them? — Debra Smith, my assistant editor, who kept me organized, Lynn l idicola, who stayed %p long hours developing pictures with me, and Kathy Mitchell, who worked so long laying-out thl book. The real success of the Record Book of 1971 will not be a good precept ion on Class Day, but rather the power it has of allowing us to relive oiy memories of Durfee in the years to come. KATHY HARKIN Editor
