High school graduation for some is the end of formal education; for others the beginning of higher academic pursuits. To all it is a step along the new road,an exciting and difficult one, a road not so clearly marked as the highway of learning throughout your Durfee years. Perhaps never before in history has the way to ultimate goals been so filled with possible pitfalls. Some current thoughts on graduation bring to the front such charges as, “generation-gap , “student-unrest , lack of responsibility , lessons unlearned , and complete abandonment of the verities . Collectively these accusations against youth would not, I am sure, stand the test of absolute analysis. Individually, however, single claims could easily be attached to selected graduates. At no time during the development of man has every person been a paragon of virtue. It seems reasonable to ask why this generation of graduates should be charged with a greater degree of indifference to culture, custom and good? You, all of you, have been subjected to an educational process that has produced some greatness, some mediocrity, and some failures. If we can learn anything from this it is the fact that the individual is most important. No longer will you work as a group, a class, an educational unit, from this day forward you will be doing your thing. We, your teachers and elders, are certain that the machines of the technological age will not enslave you. Your strength will be found in the high ideals of B.M.C. Durfee High School, ideals based in high standards of conduct and learning. From the entire educational community, congratulations and a wish that God’s good ways will always be your good ways. 4 Sincerely yours, ROGERT J. NAGLE Superintendent of Schools TO THE CLASS OF 1970: Please accept my congratulations on your graduation and my best wishes in all your future endeavors. Today we are living in a world of polarization, particularly of generations and races. There are many questions and a search for the answers to these questions. Students are requesting more freedom and desire more participation in policy making, but I wonder if the students are ready to participate to the extent they think they are. I would like to quote an excerpt from a poem written by a high school senior that seems apropos: And now we find ourselves no longer the children we once were. But not yet the men we shall be . . . For somewhere along the way we have lost yesterday And are not quite sure where to find tomorrow. I think these lines might very well apply to all of you and are indicative of a need for reflection on your part. Someday you will be men, and the world will be yours. What will you do with it? Durfee Astronomy Society is an organization formed to further the knowledge of interested students in the field of Astronomy. The Society members make use of Durfee’s eight inch refracting telescope to view celestial objects of interest. The history of Astronomy at Durfee High began when the school was first built. Special lenses, built by the famous firm of Alvan Clark and Sons, were installed in Durfee’s new telescope. Recently, the telescope was refurbished and a new finder telescope was added. This year, the Society added to its logbook the sighting of many new nebulas and star clusters. The Society's curator is Mr. Armand Dallaire. This year's officers were: President: Owen Hartnett Vice President: Richard Boucher, and Secretary Treasurer: Jules Jacob. 88 The band opened its 1969-1970 activities by playing at the rally before the Christopher Columbus Durfee Clash. Since then it has played at numerous football and basketball games, arousing the school spirit in the fans. The organization has played at many parades, and won second place in the Columbus Day parade. We appeared at the Thanksgiving Day game in our new uniforms which had arrived the night before. The band also arranged for several concerts during the course of the school year. We also played at graduation. The band was directed by Mr. Faust D. Fiore; the officers were Alyn Platt, manager, Kenneth Ravenelle, assistant manager, and John Lambert, librarian. The Senior Girls' Glee Club and the Boys’ Glee Club meet twice weekly during school time. This year, they participated in the Christmas Concert, which presented the Cantada “When Love Came Down ; in the annual opera sing, which was La Traviata”; and in the Spring Concert. Members are granted awards for extra service at the close of each year. Miss Frances Shaughnessy is the director for the Senior Girls Glee Club and Mr. George Dimock is the director of the Boys' Glee Club. 90 91 The Business Education Club is composed of juniors and seniors who have received 70 per cent or over in four- and five-period subjects. The purpose of the club is to have speakers inform students of the opportunities open to them in the business world and to explain what is expected of them after graduation. One of the outstanding speakers this year was Mr. Robert Murray, President of Truesdale Hospital, who spoke in an informal manner to the club members on, ' What Business Expects of the High School Graduate. Trips to business organizations were also scheduled this year, and the annual business trip to Boston was held in May. Officers this year were President • Joyce Arruda, Vice-President - Denise Dupont, and Secretary Deborah Rodrigues. Under the leadership of Miss Katherine L. Hogan, faculty advisor, the Business Club had an enjoyable year. The B.M.C. Durfee Camera Club has had a busy and interesting year. We have had lively dis- cussions at every meeting about the various types of photography. With members exhibiting different techniques at the meetings, the club has acquired a large wealth of knowledge. The highlight of the club’s activities for this year was the annual photo contest. Open to all students, the contest accepted any and all slides and prints. This years officers were: President, Alan Wild- nauer; Vice-President, Joe Weglowski; and Secretary, Donna Tavares. Our faculty advisor was Mr. Paul A. Brouiflard. We are from Durfee High, And no one could be prouder . . Pride in B.M.C. Durfee High School and in the red and black uniform that they wear is the hallmark of a Durfee cheerleader. The cheerleaders can be found at every Durfee football and basketball game, adding the color and the spirit that is uniquely Durfee's, Four of the eight regular cheerleaders are chosen each spring from the sophomore can- didates. The Head Cheerleader is selected from among the juniors by the seniors and the Faculty Advisor. The cheerleaders are Durfee's most loyal fans, and game after game, they feel the emotions of winning or losing almost as much as the players themselves. When the going is rough, the cheerleaders can always be counted upon to keep the hopes of the crowd from dimming and to keep the team aiming for the top. The chant of We're Number One is usually no idle boast. Faculty Advisor is Mrs. Elizabeth T. Sullivan. 94 The purpose of the Chess Club is to provide its members with an informal atmosphere to promote the playing of chess. Members par- ticipated in discussions and tournaments which were held to establish the skill or ability of each member. These ratings were used to determine which members of the club would compose Durfee’s chess team. This team participated in many activities outside of school. The varsity chess team was affiliated with the Rhode Island Chess Association and has thus been able to compete with college and high school teams. Also notable among this years' achievements was the participation of the team in the first season of the Narry Inter- scholastic Chess League. The team has com- piled a respectable record this season in competition with other area high schools. Other activities of the club were informal matches against other schools. The captain of the chess team and president of the club Mr. Ronald Boucher, has been able, with the help of club advisor Mr. Robert Vincelette, to use Durfee for this club function. Altogether, the activities of the Chess Club have contributed significantly to the royal game in this area. 95 This year the Classical Club celebrated its fifteenth anniversary! The reason for the formation of the club in 1955 was to promote interest in the civilization of the Greco-Roman era and in western civilization from classical sources. Comic sketches, slides, and movies of Greece, Sicily, and Italy, games and a variety of talks have enlivened the monthly meetings. The 1969 recipient of the Latin medal, awarded to a third year Latin student on the basis of a competitive, was given to Judith Conrad. This medal was donated to the club in 1953. The officers for the year of 1970 were: Consul (President) Louis Gaspar; Praetor (Vice-President), Julie Almond; and Censor (Secretary), Brenda Barek. The faculty advisor for this year has been Mr. A. Wilson Whitman. Although one of the smallest clubs at Durfee, the Contemporary Jazz Society has become quite active this year. At the first meeting, President Sherry Alpert discussed the history of Jazz from its beginning in New Orleans as the work song”, to the Cabarets during World War I, to the Big Band Era, to the present time. Members listened to the swing music of all the major bands of that time. The Club has also been exposed to bop, progressive, and cool jazz. At various meetings the members heard recordings by clarinetists, saxophonists, the floutists such as Stan Getz, Charles Lloyd, and the inimitable Herbie Mann. The Contemporary Jazz Society has planned programs in conjunction with the Music Appreciation Club, Mr. Josef Cobert, Director of Music at S.M.U., spoke at a joint meeting. Another program featured Bob Fradkin, a Durfee graduate and an accomplished musician and guitarist, who performed some of his original jazz compositions. Officers of the Club for the year 1969-70 were: President, Sherry Alpert; Vice-President, Harris Tulchrn; and Secretary-Treasurer, Myrna Shapiro. 97 The Debating Society, under the direction of Mr. James Roche, has made notable progress in the field of forensic ability. Skill, through knowledge of the chosen topic, and a courageous delivery are demanded of all active members. The Debating Club is a challenging opportunity to discuss and examine the pressing political problems of our current age. Open minds and keen awareness are the only prerequisites needed to become a member of the Durfee Debating Society. The club has participated in many notable activities. In November of 1969, the club’s varsity debaters traveled to the University of Massachusetts to engage in regional debates being conducted there. In the spring of 1970, the club visited Boston to attend a theatre performance and visit the State Capitol. A few members demonstrated the club’s enthusiasm for travel and knowledge by journeying to Washington, D.C. during April vacation. The club’s officers were: President, Clare Speier; Vice-President, Steven Smith; and Secretary-Treasurer, Evelyn Pacheco. An important member of the Narragansett League, the Durfee Debating Society hopes to continue its fine performance in future years. The Dramatics Clubs' major production for the year was Thornton Wilders' popular play, OUR TOWN. The cast was selected from among the entire student body at tryouts held in December. Chosen for featured roles were Jon Udis, Susan Connors, Tom Medeiros, Bonnie Strickman, Carla Whipp, and Ken Raymond. The play was directed by Mr. James Tavares and student assistant Michael Dziezynski. Presented on April 23 and 24 at the Durfee Technical Auditorium, OUR TOWN was considered the club’s boldest production in years. Cake sales were organized to help finance the play. Publicity, props, make-up, costuming, lighting, ticket sales, refreshments and other production work was handled by the club. Members also participated in acting workshops and held a trip in June. Seniors in this year's club were: Bonnie Strick- man, Suzi Schwartz, Leslie Rodman, and Lynn Goldberg. The Officers for this year were: President, Cheryl Souza; Vice-President and Treasurer, Paula Murray; and Secretary, Jon Udis. The director and club advisor is Mr. James Tavares. 99 LA FRANCE Bonjour! from Le Cercle Francais to the Senior Class. The renaissance ot Le Cercle Francais was a little late this September because the officers were undiscovered, But, our club advisor, Miss Phyllis Pytel, met with the club’s seniors, who unanimously voted for Bonnie Strickman as President, Penny Sevin as Vice- President, and Ellen Horvitz as Secretary- Treasurer. Under their leadership, the club grew and grew until its membership consisted of fifty filles and two garcons. (Those deux gar- cons had un bon temps avec all les filles, n'est-ce pas?) The club sported many types of meetings during the year. We ate French pastry for one after school get-together (probably the best meeting). We were honored to have Miss Mary Louise Walsh, the Dean of Women at SMU, address us. The integrated Christmas party proved to be a total success. There was a mini-trip to Brown University to see ANTIGONE en francais. After many agonizing meetings to plan the library corridor display, it was finally put up in the nick of time. Let’s hope Charles Schultz and Charles de Gaulle appreciate our artistic talents. Adieu! 100 The Future Teachers of America club was formed for students interested in a teaching career. Club members are exposed to the opportunities, responsibilities, and problems of the teaching profession. Meetings are held once a month. Guest speakers, tours of schools and a Teaching Observation at elementary schools are part of the program. At one of the meetings Mr. Brown, a student teacher, and Miss Ellen Demetrius spoke of college courses and their own teaching experiences. An enlightening question and answer period followed their discussion. At another meeting Rev. James H. Hornsby spoke about ways and means of getting a new high school. He also spoke of the problems involving the Parochial and public schools. During the spring, club members toured the Paul A. Dever School in Taunton and spent a day observing classroom activities in Fall River elementary schools. Officers were President, Leslie Rodman; Vice President Michele Breault; Secretary, Colleen Farrissey; and Treasurer Linda Papoula. Mrs. Aileen Mack is advisor. 101 Ruhig; Bitte ruhig. Achtung, schweigen, Sie nun. So began a typical German Club meeting. The usual meeting consisted of watching a movie on German Culture, obtained from the German Consulate in Boston, and discussing future plans. Club activities this year included trips to Das Schwarz Wald Ha us, a local German restaurant, attendance at the Boston University German Festival, Tivoli, and a ski trip. All of these excursions were designed to acquaint club members with German food and customs, and to give flavor and understanding to their German language course. Mr. John Sullivan is the club advisor. This year's officers were President, James Hardy; Vice-President, Pamela Dowd; and Secretary, Rosemarie Capone. 102 Home Room Directors, the largest active group in the school, are elected early in the year, with a boy and girl chosen to represent each room. The group elects a president from the senior class and a vice president-secretary from the junior class. The directors assume the duties of reading the morning notices, encouraging participation in school activities, and taking attendance. They support the Students' Activities Associa- tion and are very helpful to the home-room teachers. The faculty advisor is Mr. James S. Panos. 103 This year, the DURFEE HILLTOP staff decided to make the paper more relevant. They abolished trivial feature stories about falling down the stairs, and replaced them with features about current events. These articles included such topics as the grape boycott and the drug clinic. However, many students felt that the paper had become too relevant; some found it boring. A common complaint was that there was too much straight news. The staff felt that it did make some significant progress. The paper included more student opinion than it had in the past. The paper took an active part in the fight for a new high school. The members of this year’s staff were: Editor, Pat Garrity; Business Manager, Pat Pankowski; Page Editors, Sherry Alpert, Nancy Gagnon, and Debbie Zalkind; Herald News reporter, Michele Isadore; News Editor, Linda Quinlan; Features and News, Gail Gagne and Pat Rapoza. The advisor was Mr. Gerard Mack. 104 For the first time in the history of Durfee, tryouts were held for Junior Varsity Cheerleaders. After a tremendous turnout of applicants, two squads of eight were formed. The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders served as a Pep Squad during the football season. For basketball, the girls elected Chris Anger and Jayne Dashoff to head one squad and Janet Martineau and Lisa Lifrak as leaders of the other squad. The two groups, under the supervision of Mrs. Elizabeth Sullivan, were successful in leading school spirit and encouraging the Junior Varsity Team. The two groups, consisting of Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors shared a year of harmony, enjoyment, and good fellowship. 105 “Sssh! Quiet please! May I help you? You want it renewed? You may keep it for two weeks. These are only a few of the sounds and questions you would hear if you happened to stop by one of the busiest rooms at Durfee, The Keeley Library, situated on the third floor between the two main entrances of the technical building. An enthusiastic group of library aides do much to sell the library idea. Each member is given an opportunity to participate in as many different library duties as possible in order to develop well-rounded conceptions of library services. The Library Club, holds monthly meetings during which occasional social events are planned. This year the group enjoyed a Christmas party, coffee hour, various speakers, and a field trip to the Shakespeare Festival in Beverly, Mass. Mrs. M. Rita Nagle is librarian and advisor. Officers for the 1969-1970 school year were: President, Philip Pacheco; Vice-President, Kristine Turenski; Secretary-Treasurer, Ken- neth Raymond and Social Chairman, Beverly Bozek. 106 Whenever the Durfee band performs, people see nine spirited majorettes in new uniforms of the traditional red and black. The group works throughout the summer and school year to prepare for football and basketball games, parades, pep rallies, and twirling competitions. They not only display talent but also help to promote school spirit and interest in athletics. The group is now comprised of four seniors and five juniors. Eligibility is deter- mined by twirling and marching ability, academic achievement, and cooperation. Judges are Mr. Faust Fiore, band director; advisors Miss Alice Harrington, Miss Margot Lavoie, and the senior majorettes. The majorettes are awarded a letter D with a baton insignia at the All-Sports banquet. 107 Members of the Mathematics Club, devote time to fascinating mathematical topics that do not enter the usual classroom discussion. Mr. Albert Roy, a mathematics instructor from Bristol Community College, delivered an excel- lent program this year which dealt with Pytha- gorean Triplets. Speakers from such sources as I.B.M. were also invited to inform students of the advantages of careers linked with mathematics. The annual Mathematics Tournament spon- sored by the club is an excellent opportunity for ambitious students to demonstrate their mathematical abilities. From this tournament a team of students was chosen to represent Durfee at a regional tournament. In addition to promoting a keener interest in math and an appreciation for this field, this organization offers students an opportunity to work together in planning activities and administra- ting the business of the club. Officers for the 1969-1970 school year were: Judy Conrad, President: Sandra Botelho, Vice- President; and Cheryl Ryan, Secretary. The advisor to the club is Mr. Daniel Berthiaume. 108 The Music Appreciation Club is open to all students in the school who are interested in music. The purpose of the club is to present programs of varied types of music to its members so that they may have a more complete understanding of the different types of music. This year the club's membership is much larger than in the past years. This has, there- fore, provided more talent from which to draw our programs. Two programs concerned with folk music and rock music were presented by several members of the club, as were two programs dealing with classical music. The first, presented by the Junior Music Club of Fall River, included a vocal quartet, a recorder soloist, and two pianists. The second program of classical music was comprised of a violin solo by a member of the school orchestra and the Fall River Symphony. The officers of the club are: President, Jenny Lou Ryan; Vice-President, Kenneth Shapiro; and Secretary, Deborah Zalkind. The advisor was Mr. James Tavares. 109 The purpose of the Mu Kappa Delta Chapter of the National Honor Society is to stimulate scholarship, service, leadership, and character at B.M.C. Durfee High School. Students are chosen from the upper 25% of the Junior and Senior Classes and must retain a minimum scholastic average of 85 in order to retain membership. Among the annual social events of the Society are the fall coffee hour and the spring tea for newly inducted members. The National Honor Society sponsored a literary pilgrimage to Salem. Members also attended the New England Convention of National Honor Society Chapters at Bridgewater State College. Another important function of the National Honor Society is the publication of its literary magazine THE PENDULUM. The National Honor Society also maintains a very active tutoring service. Members work in conjunction with the guidance office to offer assistance to students in need. Officers for the year were: President, Jules S. Jacob; Vice-President, Christine Jean; and Secretary-Treasurer, Susan Mello. The sponsors are Principal Thomas W. Hammond, Miss Katherine Hogan, Miss Yolande Laliberte. and Miss M. Dolores Burns. 110 The B.M.C. Durfee High Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Faust D. Fiore, rehearses every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the school year. The students who comprise the orchestra, both those planning a career in music and those planning a career in other fields, enjoy playing classical and contemporary music. Some of the members of the orchestra have the opportunity to audition for and play in the All District, All State Orchestra and Greater Boston Youth Ensemble. After many hours of diligent work the orchestra performs at the Christmas Concert, The Opera Sing, The Spring Concert, Class Day Exercises, and other social and school activities. The officers for 1970 are: Business Manager; Joan Sevigny; Assistant Business Manager; Kenneth Ravenelle; and Librarian; Carlos Santos. Ill THE PENDULUM, literary magazine of the National Honor Society, launched an unprecedented search for new talent and ideas. Under the editorship of Aimee Schwartz, her assistants Pamela Dowd and Gordon Schwartz, and a capable staff the magazine has grown to include works that represent the three classes in Durfee. We are indebted to Miss Katherine Hogan's team of typists and Miss Torphy's and Mrs, Carfagno's artists. And our faculty advisor Miss Dolores Burns, provided invaluable aid and inspiration. 112 Each year, as more students become interested in the Portuguese language, membership in the Portuguese club increases. The club tries not only to show how important the Portuguese language has become in the last decade, but also to familiarize its members with the customs, traditions and ways of life of Portuguese-speaking people throughout the world. At monthly meetings, members are informed of scholarships available to students planning to further their education in the Portuguese language. The Club's activities included a colorful exhibit displaying reproductions of 18th century masterpieces and many native Portuguese items. Movies taken in Portugal by our treasurer, Liadora Couto, and a visit by Reverend Lucian Fereira, made the year more interesting. Miss Mary T. Carvalho is the faculty avdisor to the club. The officers for this year were: President, Rosemary Affonso; Vice-President, Richard Paula; Secretary, Paul Grillo; and Treasurer, Liadora Couto. 113 Change has been the by-word of the Record Book this year. We have tried to make this book more appeal- ing to the students. We, of the Record Book staff, hope that this book will convey to you the changing ideas in today's world. Record Book Staff 115 In gathering together the students of the school in an informal scientific atmosphere, the Science Club participates in a wide variety of activities Foremost in this year's program was the Lecture Series which focused particularly on modern scientific research. Guest speakers included Dr. Peter Wey and Professor Walter Conrad of SMU. Selected Science Club members also continued with research of their own, specifically in the third consecutive year of biochemical analysis of the South Watuppa Pond. Here, extensive weekly examination of water samples taken from various locations at the pond brought some of the tragic effects of pollution into focus. On the social side of the ledger were the tour of the Thompson Chemical Plant and the annual outing to Camp Jennings, The year was finalized with a field trip to the Smithsonian Institute and the Museum of History and Technology in Wash- ington, D. C. The club owes much to its faculty advisors, Mr. Roger H. Dubois and Mr. Edward Haponik, both of whom contributed immensely to main- taining the Science Club in its position as the largest and most active club in the school. 116 The South Watuppa Pond Analysis Committee is an ecology group dedicated to a scientific study of pollution in the South Watuppa Pond. Established at the beginning of the summer of 1968p the group consists of interested students who have had some experience in lab technique in College Biology or College Chemistry. The officers for the 1969-70 year are: President, Richard Boucher; Vice-President, Nancy Davin; and Secretary, Susan Peckham. The group performs numerous physical, chemical, and biological tests on samples of the pond water. Tests are performed every two weeks during the school year, and every weekday morning during the morning session at Durfee. In the summer the members go on field trips to the pond to collect samples, take pictures, and scout for sources of pollution. The committee’s findings have stirred up much interest in the problem of the pond. SWaPAC operates under the advisorship of Roger H. Dubois and Edward Haponik. 117 Pre-concert jitters: one week to gof Let's get going! We'll never learn this stuff for the concert. Well, they have all the music! Miss Shaughnessy said not to use music this time, But I don't know the words! The Senior Mixed Chorus works hard each year to present interesting and entertaining programs. The Chorus, directed by Miss Frances C, Shaughnessy, is composed of Juniors and Seniors who are former members of the sophomore glee clubs. The President of the Senior Mixed Chorus this year was Ronald Schenck, and the Librarians were Christine Mello and Norman Ruest. Eleven members of the Chorus were selected for the Southeastern Massachusetts Music Educators District Chorus and one member was selected for All-State Chorus. The theme for this year's Spring Concert was centered around the murals in the Technical Auditorium. 118 The Hilltop Seranaders is composed of about twenty boys who are selected by their conductor, Mr. George S. Dimock, and are voted on by the senior members of the group. The boys' official uniform consists of grey slacks and blue blazers wtih red insignias. They meet twice weekly to prepare for their perform- ances at various civic organizations and clubs. Their program consists of all types of music — light classical, show tunes, and selected popular music. 119 Hasta luego! This year the members of the Spanish Club enjoyed a most successful season. Our goals were to bring together students and acquaint them more fully with the language, way of life, customs and traditions of the Spanish-speaking people of the world. Our activities included a Christmas party featuring entertainment by members of the club. Everyone at the party enjoyed a homemade Pinata that was filled with many delicious goodies. To broaden our interest in Spanish life, guest speakers came to our meetings and discussed varied topics with us. A field trip and a display in the library corridor were also arranged during the year. Under the guidance of our advisor, Mr. John Pontes, this has been a very active year. The Student's Activities Association, the center of all student activities, is open to all students. The Student Council, its governing body, attempts to plan extra-curricular activities and to develop school spirit and leadership. The Student Council is led by President, Maureen Janusz; and Vice-President, Colleen Farrissey. It also includes the presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries, and councillors of all classes; president of the Home Room directors, head cheerleader and head majorette. Among the activities sponsored by the SAA were: The annual SAA Free dance to new members; the Fall dance; the Christmas dance and the Christmas toy drive for the benefit of an orphan’s home and the Spring Dance. Faculty advisors are Mr. John Connell and Mr. Reginald Pelagio. Treasurer is Mrs. Joan T. Carfagno. The SAA is grateful for the coopera- tion of Principal Thomas W. Hammond. TRAFFIC SQU mu The Traffic Squad is a non-Delta organization, composed of nine boys headed by Captain Steven Costa and Assistant Captain Paul Mooney. Quite a while back, these boys did much more than they do now. They used to form patrols to insure orderly passage of pupils in the corridors and to prevent students from leaving the school grounds and smoking. These duties were taken away from them when the Cadet Corps came into existence. They also had charge of patrolling the fences and watching the gates and doors at football and basketball games. Now, however, these boys continue to open the doors and put out the “Road Closed' sign regardless of the weather. The signs were made by one of the former woodworking classes. One good thing which has come as a result of the Traffic Squad is that a few years ago, Safety Officer Raymond McGough noticed our system for safe crossing and he has inaugurated it in most of the school systems in Fall River. Mr. George Kelly is the faculty advisor. The Vocalaires is a group of fifteen to twenty junior and senior girls. They audition for membership in the group at the end of their sophomore or junior year. The senior members in the group then vote on whether or not to admit the person. They meet once a week to prepare programs for presentation at various civic organizations such as PTA meetings, senior citizens’ homes, and veterans' hospitals. Whenever they perform as a group, they are dressed alike in navy blue, A-line jumpers with white blouses. Miss Frances C. Shaughnessy directs this group of talented singers. The Girls' Varsity Club was revived this year after eight years of inactivity. Girls who have earned one or more varsity letters, cheerleaders, and majorettes are eligible for membership, and are voted into the club by members from the previous year. The purpose of this club is to promote greater school spirit and a greater desire for competition in the various sports and athletic activities. Each year the Girls' Varsity Club, together with the Boys' Varstiy Club, helps stage a varsity show where all prove their talents as well as sporting ability. Special thanks are given to our advisors Mrs. Elizabeth Sullivan and Miss Margot Lavoie for their co-operation and help to all the girls in every way possible. The Varsity club is an organization composed of boys who have earned a varsity letter in interscholastic athletics. The highlight of this year's activities was the Varsity Show presented by the Student Council in April under the direction of Mr. Reginald Pelagio and several other faculty members. The athletes proved themselves to be as poised and graceful behind the footlights as they were on the athletic field. The proceeds from the sale of tickets to the Varsity Show were used to sponsor the Varsity Club outing and a field trip to a professional ball game. The Head Advisor is Mr. Ernest Baroody with Mr. Reginald Pelagio and Mr, John Connell as Assistant advisors. 124 The purpose of the World History Club is to stimulate the interest of students in world affairs and to encourage pupils to take an active part in them. This policy was brought out to its fullest when many of the members agreed to go to local polls to encourage voters to act concerning eighteen year olds voting by 1972. Among the many informative and interesting speakers this year was Rev. James Hornsby, who addressed the club concerning poverty. The club members were most responsive to him. All was not business this year for the club had quite an unusual Christmas party. It joined with the Spanish Club and together had a good time observing some Spanish customs. Entertainment was provided for by guitarists whose music was enjoyed. The main event of the year was a trip to New York and the United Nations Building where delegates of the club delivered, to representatives of UNICEF, money collected during a very successful drive. All of the above mentioned was made possible by the expert guidance of Mr. George Kelly, faculty advisor. 126 A well-coached Topper combine enjoyed another highly successful season under the direction of coach Tom Karam. The squad again captured the B.C.L crown with a 13-1 league record and a 19-3 overall slate. Durfee's stiffest competition in league action came from New Bedford Voke. When these two teams met, the fans enjoyed good tight basketball. Durfee was defeated in the first encounter 61-56, its only loss in league competition. In their return game at the Bank Street Armory, however, the Toppers played their finest game of the season and defeated the Artisans 64-56. Durfee's only other tosses came at the hands of Central Providence, the R. I. state champs and Somerville in the Tech Tourney quarter- finals. Durfee entered the Boston Gardens rated as a team most likely to be eliminated in the opening round. The Hilltoppers surprised the Boston writers by defeating North Quincy by a convincing 12 point margin. The Toppers were next paired with Somerville and only after firm opposition all the way bowed to the Highlanders. 128 B.C.L. CHAMPS 70 BASKETBALL 129 132 133 With the loss of all but three starters from last year's B.C.L. champs due to graduation. Coach Don Montle had a mammoth rebuilding job ahead of him. From practically the first session to the last, injuries to key personnel hindered the team's progress. Durfee dropped its opener to a veteran Christopher Columbus team from Brighton 34-6. The Hilltoppers opened its defense of the B.C.L. crown against Taunton and lost 24-0. The next opponent being Attleboro, Coach Montle's gridders were again on the losing end 21-8. Durfee then visited undefeated Bishop Feehan with seven starters out of action and was defeated 20-0. The Toppers entered the game against Bishop Stang sky-high and defeated them by a convincing score of 20-6. The Red and Black next fought a talent laden Bourne team to a 6-6 tie. Durfee played host to Monsignor Coyle and after scoring first, was beaten 24-6. New Bedford Voke handed Durfee its fifth loss against one win with a 20-6 score. A strong and speedy New Bedford High team moved to a 48-6 victory over the injury riddled Durfee High team in the final game. 136 Lack of experience hurt Durfee's soccer fortunes this year. In the eyes of coach Tom Karam it was a year for rebuilding. In a twelve game schedule, the team managed three ties against Attleboro, Westport, and Diman; with a lone victory at the expense of New Bedford’s Holy Family. The entire team excluding the two seniors on this year's squad, Mike Almeida, a center halfback, and Charlie Pacheco, a center forward, will be returning next season. The highest award of the year went to Charlie Pacheco when he was selected to the All County League Team for his outstanding playing throughout the season. 137 The Track Team looked optimistically to the coming season. The return of many letter men in most events and a large turnout of sophomores gave Coach Jim Wilcox reason to hope for an improvement over last year's record. Among those who carried much of the load were Seniors Joe Duvan, Dana Ramey, Dave Ozug, Ken Ravenelle, Steve Gardiner, Tim Smith, Steve How- ance, and Co-Captains Frank Lewis and Mike Abdow. Steve Howance ranked among the best high jumpers in Massachusetts and was threatening to become Durfee’s first six foot high jumper as the season approached. X38 The Cross-Country team experienced a season of improvement in 1969. The team started the season handicapped by little experience and with no returning lettermen. Yet the twelve-man squad proved to be willing workers and finished the season tagged by many as the most improved team in the league. Seniors Steve Howance, Ken Ravenelle, Steve Gardiner, Paul Ziobro and Captain Dave Ozug all ran well and scored frequently throughout the season. The league championship meet proved a satisfying day for the Durfee team as they placed four runners in the top fifteen finishers. 139 Organized by Coach Don Montie, the handbaJI and wrestling tournaments afforded Durfee boys a fine intramural program. Wrestling was carried on two days a week after school in the boys' gym. Weight classes were set up, and sopho mores, juniors, and seniors competed for the championship of their weight class. Dave Ozug and Pete Silva were in this tournament. Handball eliminations were held in both singles and doubles competition. Among the many boys competing in the singles tournament: Bob Howayeck, Jeff Mather, Tim Smith, Dan Shay, and Steve Hownace were rated as top contenders for the championship. In the doubles competition, the combinations of How- ayeck-Mather and Smith-Howance were the front runners for first place. 140 Under the supervision of Coach Margot Lavoie and co-captains Kathy Carey and Deborah Morris, the Durfee Girls Basketball Team held high prospects for a very successful season. Durfee participated in Bristol County Girls' League games with schools in the surrounding area. The utmost objectives in such a sport are good sportsmanship, self-discipline and most of allr fun. Any girl who plays in the Girls' Varsity Basketball Team is awarded a Durfee D . The girls' sports banquet is held in the spring with the teams that make up the league. An optional advantage to belonging to the team is that each girl who earns a “D is eligible to participate in the annual varsity show. 141 SENIOR DIRECTORY MICHAEL JOSEPH ABDOW Track Team 3 Prom Committee 4 JAMES JOSEPH ABREU Homeroom Director 2, 3 ROBLEY P. Dunn Catherine Boylan Daniel Sheahan Barbara Coriaty Joan Carfagno Helen Amiot To the Class of 1970: As editor of the 1970 Record Book, I have seen many hours spent to organize a yearbook worthy of representing this school year. We have tried to convey to the students, the feelings and emotions of the year. When we first began to plan the book, the question was not that of making the book “arty ; but instead, how to change the standard, traditional Record Book into a book which students could relate to and find meaningful. The major changes came with layout design and the addition of a photo essay. J Not everything emerged as we first imagined it. Numerous frustrations were encountered each day, Ideas had to be translated, understood, discarded and new ones searched for until the right one was found. Because we lacked time, this Record Book could not have been produced without the devoted efforts of those who worked earnestly; in appreciation for sharing and fulfilling the responsibilities of this book I sincerely thank the members of the staff, especially Patricia Garrity, Ellen Horvifz, Richard Paula, and Linda Quinlan. To Mr. Paul Brouillard, I extend my gratitude for the guidance, knowledge, and time he has given the entire senior class by revitalizing a traditional and uninteresting Record Book. My thanks are given, also, to David Springer for the hours he has spent photographing and developing pictures and to our faculty advisor, Mr. Gerard Mack, for his assistance in aiding our attempts to change Durfee's Record Book. I would also like to thank Miss Katherine Hogan and Mr. William Bradbury for handling the financiaf aspect of the book. Now, we are finished. It is no .longer our book, although I, as well as the rest of the staff, still retain a small feeling of personal ownership. We hope that this book holds as much meaning for you as it does for us.
