Soulier, Senior Clerk-Stenographer Barhara J. Coriaty, Clerk Stenographer Olga Hordoviteh, Clerk-Stenographer To the Class of 1969: As ihc end-product of the Fall River educational plan, the high school graduate stands in a central position in our affection and expresses — in an ideal way — our belief in both education and democracy. It was our intention to develop within you an intellectual curio- sity and to awaken within you the social interests and concerns characteristic of an educated heart. It is our hope that we have successfully met all your educational needs and expectations, and that your schooling has given you insights into the strengths, the adventure, the creativity and the stunning grandeur of the 1969 space age world, its society and its enterprises. The expanding concepts of man, mankind, humanity, wealth, learning, poverty, war and peace — long institutionalized — are now being subjected to searching reviews out of which, we expect, will come — after moments of turmoil — a serene way of life, designed to enhance the inherent dignity of both man and his society. We must all, however, be prepared to accept the notion of frailty and to admit with candor that the future will not be, in all respects, perfect. Some speakers will continue to mumble their words, some leaders will stumble away from progress, some thinkers will propose error, some public problems will resist solution and some personal hopes will not be realized. But we can expect that a balance of strengths and weaknesses will move civilization towards new excellences and individuals towards greaLer satisfactions. The educators of Fall River join me in offering you congratu- lations and in wishing you a lifetime of enthusiasm, happiness and achievement. Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1969: First, I would like to extend my congratulations on your ac- complishments and wish you the best in the years to come. You are confronted with wonderful opportunities to improve conditions in the world. You are, whether you like it or not, what is referred to as the “gap generation The contentions against the establishment, disregard for law whether it be moral or statute is more than a little puzzling to me. Laws are made for the benefit of the entire population. But the trend is toward individual evalua- tion of the law and toward the individual to obeying or disobeying the law, depending on how he feels it applies to him. Everyone wants to do as he pleases. Fortunately, we at Durfee find hope in the overwhelming strength of the majority of our students being too much concerned in taking advantage of the opportunities offered and in preparing them- selves for the future. It would be well to remember that the rights of all should be protected but we must also remember that with all rights there are definite responsibilities. May I suggest that you continue to “play it cool” and think before you act. Do not forfeit your rights in order to foster the demands of a few dissidents. To be against something is not enough. In order to right a wrong you must have a solution to the problem. Then the generations arc able to bridge the gap and go on to better things. Principal. STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students' Activities Association, the nucleus of all activities, is the only organization whose membership is open to all students who wish to join. The Student Council, the governing body of the school plans extra- curricular activities and develops school spirit and leadership. The Student Council was composed of President Richard Lown, Vice President Maureen Janusz, and Secretary Colleen Farrissey; also the presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries, and councillors of three classes, the President of the Home Room Directors, President of the National Honor Society, the head cheerleader and the head majorette. The Student Council was especially active this year. It conducted two pep rallies, sold football programs and frou-frous,” held dances every two weeks during football season, and sponsored a successful Pigskin Hop. The S.A.A. also sponsored a folk concert. The Holiday Dance was held in the Durfee Study Hall. The Council collected toys at Christmas time for underprivileged children. The Student Council tried to make a closer bond with the student body by providing open meetings in the Tech Auditorium. Faculty advisors are Mr. John Connell, Mr. Reginald Pelaggio, and Mrs. Joan Carfagno. The S.A.A. is grateful for cooperation by Principal Thomas W. Hammond. 95 Vice-President Madeleine Dcschcnes, President Doris Forcier and Secretary-Treasurer Claudette Dcschcnes. BUSINESS CLUB The Business Club, whose membership is composed of seniors and juniors receiving 70 per cent or better in all four- and five-period subjects, was organized 10 acquaint business students with the opportunities available to them in the community and to show them what is expected of them in the business world. There were various guest speakers at the meetings held by the club, and a special assembly was held for senior girls. In addition to regular meetings, the club sponsors the A.M.S. Spelling Test, typists for the Record Book, office aides, and secretaries to the heads of the departments. A successful event held this year was a field trip to the John Hancock Insurance Company in Boston and, earlier in the year, a trip to the Aetna Casualty Insurance Company in Fall River, A social affair, at which the entire faculty of (he Business Education Department will be guests, will end the schedule for the year. Miss Katherine L. Hogan, head of the Business Education Department, is advisor. 97 Front Row: Secretary Robert Green, George Rtbeiro, President Richard Schwartz and Vice-President Alan Wildnauer. Back Row: Leonard Machado, David Springer, Michael Mui, Joseph J. Wcglowski, Richard Boucher and Ronald Boucher. CAMERA CLUB Investigating and utilizing the artistic and scientific merits of photography are important to the activities of the Camera Club. Through photographic exhibitions and contests, members’ interest and knowledge about the latest in photographic techniques are enhanced. Club meetings have the members experimenting with and presenting innovations in the various aspects of photography. A diverse program with films, printed materials, and speakers is presented, with accents falling on the encouragement of pursuing photography as a career, or just as a hobby. As j art of the activities program conducted during the year, assignments are given to members to take pictures of the many activities at Durfee. Photographs taken by members are regular features of the Durfee Hilltop, and are included in Lhe Record Book, The Camera Club is under the direction of Mr. John Medeiros. 98 President Augustine Gonsalves, Vice-President Ronald Boucher and Secretary-Treasurer Gregory Curt. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club has a long tradition of success. To its members, the club is a source of much stimulating and rewarding adventure. This year has been no exception. The club travelled to various local schools for informal matches. They are also participants in the Rhode Island Chess Association tournaments and have won several trophies within recent years. Members have ample opportunity to sharpen their skills at regular meetings. These gatherings are the prime source of knowledge to these students, and an occasional lecture on one of the finer points of the game is important in attaining the ultimate goal of improvement. This year’s club continues the tradition of being able to maintain Durfee as the center of local chess circles. The club owes its position to the officers and members, as well as the faculty advisor Mr. Robert Vincelette. Because of this combined effort, the Chess Club has demonstrated its ability to match the achievements of past clubs. 99 Susan Keeley, Dena Babin, Censor (Secretary) Cynthia Grinncll, Consul (President) Camilla Pickering, Praetor (Vice-President) Elizabeth Harnett, Cheryl Gcsncr and Aedile Elaine Raliinovitz. CLASSICAL CLUB Camilla Pickering and Dena Babin painstakingly poLinded out the piano keys to the sweet (?) strains of “Tacita Nox and other various familiar carols — not so familiar when sung (?) in Latin. We proved Latin CAN be a spoken (sung?) language. The Classical Club had its fourteenth birthday this year. Imagine — 14 years of generating interest in Latin and Greek civilization and culture! Any student who has taken or is taking Latin can join. Comic sketches, slides and movies of Italy and Greece, and talks on ancient science, medicine, theatres, pirates, and mythology have been given. In 1958, the club became the annual donor of a Latin medal For the third-year Latin student who wins a competitive examination. The institu- tion was suggested by our Former principal, Mr. Ambrose Keeley. The 1968 recipient was Andrew Shabshelowitz. This year the club set up a display in the Keeley Library Corridor. At intervals of three years the members visit the classical collection at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Susan Keeley was a former Aedile (Program Chairman) and Praetor; Elaine Rabinoviu, an Aedile, a member of the Record Book Committee, and the Hilltop representative. Nancy Fraze is also a member of the Record Book Committee. Joan Reid was the pianist, playing for the annual Christmas meetings. Thomas Viana gave an interesting talk on Roman Spain. Cynthia Grinncll entertained us with a lesson on “The Origins of Mythology”; and Elaine Rabinovitz discussed Ancient Medicine. 100 Vice-President Robin Kaplan, President Stephen Weiser and Secretary Laurie Tallman. CONTEMPORARY JAZZ SOCIETY The soft sounds of Brazilian Jazz filled the room while the members of the Contemporary Jazz Society painted their impressions of the music that they were listening to. The main goal of the Contemporary Jazz Society has been to open up a new world of music to its members. Through listening and discussing the recordings, we have strived for understanding of various jazz artists. Thus, the members have learned to enjoy the various strains of jazz. At some of our meetings wtc have stressed the idea chat jazz was essentially derived from the African and Negro cultures, but we have also found that many other countries are influencing the sounds of modern jazz. Miss Phyllis Pylel is our advisor. 101 Secretary-Treasurer Alan Semine. President Jonathan Kates and Vice-President Stephen Yoken. DEBATING SOCIETY There’s no debating it! This year, the Debating Society was a major force in the school. As an example of the power of the group, activities included the publication of a student opinion paper in collaboration with the Science Club. A discussion forum under-scored the prominence of the club at Durfee, In keeping with the society's purpose to provide instruction and ex- perience in the presentation and effective argument, the members took part in the Narragansett Interscholastic League debates and the John Fitz- gerald Kennedy Memorial Debate Tournament. This season marked the return of a novice league program. Junior Varsity members had the opportunity to debate formally in regionally spon- sored tournaments, two of which were held at Durfee. Tn addition to their scholastic activities, the members held a successful Christmas party and enjoyed an informative and enjoyable spring trip. Mr. James F. Roche is advisor to the organization. 102 Thespian Laurie Lash, Thespian Elaine Rabinovitz, President and Thespian fane Tall man, Vice-President mid Thespiam Robert Fradkin, Secretary Rosemary Alfonso and Thespian Barbara Ekrenhaus. DRAMATICS CLUB Snoopy loved us. We loved him too, when the Dramatics Club took a trip to sec the Boston production of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, land met the show's cast in the fall of 1968. It was one of the many activities we enjoyed as the club reorganized. The budding Barrymores of Durfee also had the chance to attend the productions of Cactus flower, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Nutcracker Ballet. Our Christmas party, held along with the World History Club, didn’t offer us much chance for drama, but we all had a good time listening to Kris Mooney’s and Cathy Lash’s great singing and the famous guitar of Bob Fradkin. Our most important activity, however, was our spring production of the comedy My Sister Eileen, which included working with set design, props, costumes and. of course, dramatics. Under the very patient direction of our new advisor, Miss Constance O’Brien, we had all learned, or had tried to learn, quite a bit by the end of June, 1969. 103 Feature Editor Patricia Joseph, Business Manager Susan Moe, News Editor Joan Camara, Editor Kenneth Champlin, Assistant Sports Editor John Duffy and Sports Editor Thomas Pontes. DURFEE HILLTOP We did it! We were the first Dtirfee Hilltop staff to break with tradition: exchanging the Old English Durfee Hilltop nameplate for a new, stylized Gothic one. We also raised the subscription rate from SI.00, to $2.00 per school year. We were asked, “Why?” After the 1967 1908 Journalism II class' long and tedious search, the Durfee Hilltop staff of 1968-1969 found itself with a new format as well as a new printer: new paper, headline and type sizes, and finally, a new nameplate. The new” Durfee Hilltop had a hopeful future, for 30 enthu- siastic juniors had elected Journalism I in 1967-1968, and comprised the Durfee Hilltop staff of the class of 1969. In order to keep up with the work of putting out a school newspaper, the offices of news and feature editors were created. The editorial staff of the Durfee Hilltop for the year 1968-1969 were: Kenneth Champlin, Editor-in- Chief; Susan Moe, Business Manager; Joan Camara, News Editor; Patricia Joseph, Feature Editor; Thomas Pontes, Sports Editor; and John Duffy, Assistant Sports Editor. Other members of the Durfee Hilltop staff included: Stephen Bolyai, Rachel Boutin, Susan Burns, Patricia Eagan, Joan Gancarski, Susan Gaw, Debra Glauser, Ann Harkin, Robin Kaplan, Deolinda Lcite, Wallis Lowcnthal, Elaine Rabinovitz, Paulette Robichaud and Garin Strauzer. Susan Moe was appointed Acting Editor from March to June. Since the Durfee Hilltop doubled its rate of subscription to meet the rising cost of printing, the staff knew they had to give each reader his money's worth. This diligent work paid off — for the Durfee Hilltop j)laced first in scholastic editing and publishing in the New England Scholastic Press Association Competition at Boston University. Miss Barbara J. Leonard is the faculty advisor. 104 President Susan Robinovitz, Vice-President Robert Fradkin and Secretary Margaret Pereira. FRENCH CLUB French isn’t all subjunctives, irregular verbs, and seventeenth-century literature. It's also le Cercle francais, or the French Club, an organization in which students find fun and enjoyment in the language they study. Even though their accents would probably have made a Frenchman shudder, the members of the club at one meeting read French poetry that they had picked out themselves and especially liked. French skits also were a lot of fun for everyone. Guest speakers at the club who talked about their own experiences in France left members dreaming about the trips they might someday take. Guided by advisor Miss Phyllis Pytel, everyone found both laughs and learning in the 1969 Cercle francais. 105 FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The child was thrashing her right arm wildly through the air. If the teacher didn’t call on her soon, the petite youngster would go flying around the stuffy first grade room. The teacher called upon the child to recite. She rose majestically from her tiny chair and began to stammer, for she had forgotten the answer. Meanwhile, the sly six year old boy who sat in the back of her decided to have some fun. “Oops,” and the little girl landed on the cold linoleum floor. She looked as if she were going to cry: two humiliating experiences in a row. This scene took place during “Observation Day.” This is the day when the members of the F T.A. spent a day observing teaching in various elementary schools throughout the city. We had many other enjoyable meet- ings. An interesting movie was shown about underprivileged children and the effects of their home life on their school work. A panel discussion on the different levels of teaching — elementary, high school, and college — ■was featured at one meeting. The F.T.A. was formed to enable interested students to gain an insight into the teaching profession. The various club activities that were held helped students acquire knowledge about teaching. Mrs, Aileen Mack, a mathematics teacher, is the club's new advisor. 106 Mathew Shea, Secretary-Treasurer Carole Leigh, President Debra Glauser, Vice-Pres- ident James Hardy and Stanley Sikora. GERMAN CLUB “Guten Tag. “Same to you. Schweigen Sic bitte everyone. “What’d she say? “Shut up. “Oh! Ja wold, mein Kommandant! “Funny, funny. This was the usual conversation at German Club meetings as we awaited our guest speaker or a film on Germany. We tried to bring our- selves closer to German culture by going to dinner at das Schwarz Wald Haus, a German restaurant, and attending the Tivoli given at Boston Uni- versity. Our highlight for this year was the field trip to the mountains. We also got together with a German Club from King Philip Regional High School and compared ideas. The club’s advisor is Mr. John Sullivan who once lived in Germany and was able to share with us many of the things he learned there. 107 President Gerald Dore and Secretary- T reasurer Barbara Bishop. HOME ROOM DIRECTORS Home Room Directors, the largest active group in the school, arc elected early in the year, with a boy and girl chosen to represent each room. The group elects a president from the senior class and a vice-president-secretary from the junior class The directors assume the duties of reading the morning notices, en- couraging participation in school activities, taking the attendance. They sup- port the Students' Activities Association and are very helpful to the home- room teachers. The faculty advisor is Mr. James S. Panos. 108 Vice-President Isabel M. Raposo, Secretary Jules S. Jacob and President Patricia L. Deane, LIBRARY AIDES If you were a sophomore, junior, or senior on the principal’s or A1I-A list in I960, you just might have been a member of Mrs. M. Rita Nagle’s little band, the Library Aides. It takes a lot to be a Library Aide: character, cooperation, and, most of all, a good supply of elbow grease. This year the aides worked every day during their study to keep the Ambrose Kecley Library ready for everyone. Both hysterical pupils with term papers due and casual readers who stopped in to pick up a novel appreciated all the material the aides made available. Those people you saw stamping books, filing cards, and issuing passes were all members of the organization, which also was in charge of many of the dazzling library corridor displays, including those put up for Christmas and Book Week. At the meetings, held the last Monday of every month, the aides often welcomed speakers who addressed them on various topics. With all that, it's easy to see that the Library Aides was one of the busiest groups in the school in 1969. And they even managed to smile when your book was thirty-seven weeks overdue! 109 President Barbara Ehrenhaus, Vice-President Judy Conrad and Secretary Aimee Schwartz. MATHEMATICS CLUB Hotline from room 23 to room 4 ... to be established in the future, perhaps? From club advisor to club president? Morning notes of club news can get quite tedious . If you've completed {successfully, of course) Plane Geometry and Algebra I, you're eligible for membership The members of the club eventu- ally realized that math was not only a“x T b2x -h c = 0, but was a lot of fun. Knowledge that went even further than classroom instruction was given! Speakers from neighboring colleges, manufacturing concerns, and the faculty lectured to the club. During February vacation the club held a party and in the spring went on a field trip sponsored by the advisors Mr. Donald Wood and Mr. Marcel Perry. NO Vice President Sherry Alpert, Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Miller and President Sheila Zangwill. MUSIC APPRECIATION CLUB People making music by interrupting photo-electric beams — Robert Fradkin playing his own combination of the Indian raga and the Amer- ican folk song — Carmen luring Don Jose — a variety of musical experiences — The Music Appreciation Club tries to blend the interests of its mem- bers and the wide range of musical programs available from Providence to Boston. Calling on musicians such as Ushc Rona, a talented Indian Woman, and attending Fiddler on the Roof were two of this year’s highlights. Sometimes we are caught up in a new experience, a moving perform- ance, a segment of the music world previously undiscovered. At other times we provide the music, stretching our own capacities as creators as well as audiences. Say, do you remember Sheila Zangwill's gentle leading of the club? Sherry Alpert’s enthusiasm? iVfr. Dimock’s explanation of electrifying music '? The trip to the Boston Pops? The music studied in these classes ranges from the early classics to contemporary music. The groups prepare for a number of public performances which include the annual Christmas concert, the Opera Sing, and the Spring concert. These groups also perforin at community sponsored functions. In addition, the band appears at the athletic events, and in many parades. 112 From Row: Cecilia Ruest, Isabel Raposo. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The purpose of the National Honor Society, according 10 the national Constitution, is “to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of American secondary schools.“ These are difficult tasks to accom- plish, but they are the goals that the National Honor Society try to reach. This year we have attempted to revitalize the Durfee High School chapter of the Honor Society after many years of stagnation. We have raised our stand- ards and are writing a newr constitution as well as increasing the range of our activities. We held our annual tea in October and our induction ceremony in May. We used our regular monthly meetings to plan for a book fair in the spring and to arrange for a trip to a place of cultural value and of interest to our members. Wc sponsored the publication of Coire, Durfee's annual literary magazine, under the direction of a semi-independent staff. We conducted a highly successful tutoring program which ultimately involved almost half of our members in tutoring less able students. All in all, the National Honor Society has had a productive year. The faculty advisor of the Honor Society is Miss M. Dolores Burns. 114 Vice-President Richard Paula, President Mary Medeiros, Secretary Gerry Cabral and 'Treasurer Li adora Con to. PORTUGUESE CLUB The full appreciation of a language is acquired not merely by the study of its grammar, but by the combined realization of the language as a means of communication and as a cultural heritage. With this in mind the Portuguese Club attempts to foster in its members an awareness of the im- portance of Portuguese customs, traditions, and the Portuguese way of life. Active participation of members also promotes their civic, educational, and recreational developments. Included in the monthly meetings of the Club are programs con- cerned with Portuguese art, literature and the economic and political influence of Portugal. Members are also informed of opportunities for the advanced study of the Portuguese language leading to important positions in government and industry. Various activities highlighted the program of this year's Portuguese Club, In a special exhibit in the library corridor Portuguese cultural items and arti- facts, in addition to literature on Portuguese art treasures and history, were displayed. Also conducted was an outing to the convention of area high school Portuguese clubs at Bristol, R. I., and the annual Christmas party, this year featuring Portuguese pastries and music. Brazil and Africa, where Por- tuguese influence is intensive, were also discussed. The faculty advisor to the Portuguese Club is Miss Mary T. Carvalho. 115 President Robert Green, Secretary Suzan Gaw and Vice-President Richard Boucher ASTRONOMY SOCIETY The B.M.C. Durfee High School Astronomy Society operates the school's observatory and planetarium which is located in the observatory tower. The observatory houses an eight-inch refracting type telescope. The lens of which were made by Alvan Clark and Sons are valued at more than $15,000. The purpose ol the Astronomy Society is to acquaint its members with the principles of astronomy by use of films, lectures, and by experiments in the observatory. One project the society worked on was the Grazing Occulta- tion Project in which ihe society worked in conjunction with the United States Naval Observatory. The members braved the cold in the winter and enjoyed the cool nights in the spring to make observations for this as well as just to star gaze in the observatory. Mr. Armand Dallaire, the society's faculty advisor and chairman of the science department, gave valuable aid to the members of the society. 116 Vice-President Christian Semine, Recording Secretary Ann Hark in. President Jeffrey Korber and Corresponding; Secretary Gregory Curt. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club bad a wide spectrum of activities this year In an effort to bring together students in an informed scientific atmosphere, Lhe club has integrated its activities in accordance with student interest. Foremost among these activities were the guest speakers Mr. Daniel Clairie of Honeywell Industries sj oke to the club about the use of micro- electronics in industry. Mr. John Straiten and his staff presented a program to the student body entitled “The Computer Revolution”, which consisted of a lecture and demonstration periods. Other activities enjoyed by the members included the watching of new movies of student interest, attending social functions; such as the coffee hour and the club parties, and of course, the club trip to New York. For the first time in the history of the club a new type of program was introduced. The Seminar Lecture-Demonstration Series included a program entitled “The Computer Revolution: Today and Tomorrow and The Student and His Future: Where should wc go?” The Science Club owes much of its success to its dynamic faculty advisor, Mr. Roger A. Dubois who untiringly helped to make our year a great success. Thanks are also in order for the chairlady of the coffee hour committee, Suzati Gaw; to the chairman of the activities committee, Henry Rosenfield; and to the chairman of the publications committee, Christian Scmine. It was the chairman and members of the committee who devoted their emergencies into directing most of the club functions. 117 Treasurer Joan Camara, Secretary Susan Schwartz, President James A, Miller, Vice- President Margaret Pereira and Activities Chairman Susan Burns, THE SPANISH CLUB OLE! This year we of the Spanish Club enjoyed our most popular and most active season. The total membership was comprised of 100 active participants of whom 40 were seniors. Along with the French Club, we enjoyed a Christmas party which featured entertainment provided by members of both of the clubs. Another great fiesta was our trip to Boston to see The Man of LaMancha. To stimulate the regularly scheduled meetings of the Spanish Club, we invited guest speakers who gave vivid and picturesque descriptions of their trips to the various Spanish-speaking countries. Our faculty advisor, Mr. John Pontes, who returned to Durfee, was an invaluable aid in all of the activities of the club. 118 Secretary Carla VVhipp, President Dena Babin and Vice-President Sherry Alpert. WORLD HISTORY CLUB Did you know that Durfee High School is very well-known at the United Nations? Every year some delegates from the World History Club present the money collected in their annual UNICEF drive to the headquarters at the U. N. This year the drive was the most successful it has ever been. Our Christmas party was really fun; everyone enjoyed Bob Fradkin’s guitar playing, and they especially liked the refreshments. In attempting to have more interesting meetings, we had many different well-known speakers who discussed the subjects that most concern the youth of today. Under the guidance of our advisor, Mr. George Kelly, we feel that this was the best season the World History Club has ever had. 119 First Row: Dale Asthc, Nancy Sullivan, Elizabeth DeGaetano, Pat Cabral, Lee Correiro (head) , Virginia Luz. PEP SQUAD Durfee out-spirited all its opponents this year. The Pep Squad was a great factor in boosting the Durfee loyalty. Early this year, try-outs were held for the Pep Squad; any sophomore, junior or senior girl was eligible. Our job was to supplement the rahs” bf the cheerleaders. We stimulated school spirit among the spectators at the football and basketball games. This year we sported new uniforms which consisted of black bermudas and red sweaters. Miss Beverly Cambra is the faculty advisor of the Pep Squad which helped to shout our team to victory. Fierce de- fensive coverage by Gerry Dore (30), All-BCL Tom Pontes (62), Dave Silvia (75) and Dave Gui- mond (60) held the Tigers score- less while . . . . . . daring pitchouts by All-BCL quarterback Gary Rosa helped to put 24 points on the Hilltopper scoreboard. The key to the Durfee victory can best be explained by the savage determination of players like Lou Chadwick when doing the less praised work of recovering loose balls or making crushing blocks. The most exciting game of the 1968 season was Durfee’s meeting with Feehan. The Shamrocks de- monstrated their devastating run- ning game as they compiled a 22-6 lead at the half. Here Jeff Chare tries to stop a Feehan rusher. In the third quarter Durfee’s de- fense adjusted and stopped Fee- han's stubborn ground game cold. Gerry Dorc clamps onto this Sham- rock’s leg as Mark Bomback (14), Herman Bomback (23), John Dar- mody (32) and A1I-BCL end Jim Silva converge to bring him down. Suddenly Durfee’s offense came to life. Quarterback Gary Rosa went to the air as he threw to his two fine receivers Lou Chadwick and Jim Silva. Gary repeatedly hit Chadwick to set up two ID’S and then Lou took one over by him- self. The result was a stunning 25 - 22 comeback victory by the Hilltoppers. Jim Silva looks for daylight after this reception. Durfee s championship talent was completed by its excellent coach- ing staff seen here with Co-Cap- tains Gerry Dore (50) and All-BCL Tom Pontes (62). Coach-of-the- year Don Mon tie was assisted by Joe Lewis and Stan Kupiec. One Hilltopper who deserves ac- claim is kicking specialist Charlie Duemmel. One of the finest punt- ers in the league, he set a league record by kicking the ball 80 yards from scrimmage. A TRIBUTE Each season several Hi 11 toppers sacrifice their own glory to block for their teammates. Such players are Guards A1I-BGL Tom Pontes and All-State Dennis Hennessy, Tackles Dave Silvia, Brad Bouchard and Andy Johnson and center Dave Guimond. Along with these little-praised players, the reserves are also often overlooked. Throughout the 1968 season Bob Salois, Ray Gharette, Roddy Sullivan, Tom Strojny, Ernie Dube and Mike Travis performed writh ex- cellence. m BASKETBALL B.C.L. The success of this year's basketball team was brought about by the hussle and desire of each individual player. No Hill topper had more spirit while rebounding or diving on loose balls than All-BCL forward A1 Herren (24) seen here with Dave Morley (33) and John Crow (42). For a basketball team to be a consistent winner it needs a strong, skillful center to rebound and score against opposing giants. Dnrfcc had such a center in All- RCL Dave Morley (23) scoring a daring hook shot over a de- fensive player. Looking on are Captain Bill Edward (12) and John Crow (30). 132 D nr fee’s front-court was rounded out by second team All- BCL forward John Crow, re- bounding here with center Morlcy. Other players in action are Cap- tain Bill Edward (21). Herren and one of the Topper's finest re- serves Jim Lewis. A championship basketball team must have more than big men. It must also have swift, good shooting guards to advance the bail and set up plays. Second team All-BCL Frank Bigos was such a guard. Here Frank is shown at his specialty — a driving lay-up. 133 For a group of players to be a team instead of an unco- ordinated collection of talent, a leader is needed. AII-BCL Captain Bill Edward was Durfee's leader this year. He led the team to an undefeated BCL campaign Edward was the premiere offensive player in the BCL. No other player in the league could shoot as well as Bill. This unselfish star sacrificed many nights of individual glory by passing off to team mates rather than shooting himself. Looking at this Edward shot is his back-court team mate Frank Bigos. One player who should not be overlooked is Durfee’s Mike Fleming who contributed greatly to this year's championship and undefeated BCL season while he was only a sophomore. 134 The success of this year's team was the result of one man’s coaching. Coach-of-th e-year Tom Karam, seen here with Captain Bill Edward, instilled in his players the fierce pride and competitive spirit that he himself has. Mr, Karam’s record over the years has proven that he is one of the finest coaches in high school basketball. Many little-heard-of players also contributed to the BCL championship. Players like Steve Fernandes, John Hearn, Jim Silva, Jim Lewis, Bill Perry, Jim Booth, Bob Oliver and Tom Viana provided Durfee with the deepest reserves in the league. 155 CROSS COUNTRY This year’s team finished with a 2-7 record and placed third in the Bristol County Meet at the end of the season. The Cross Country team, coached by Clint Borden, was lead by Captain Mike Brogan. Members included Mike Koblccki, Jeff Sbardella, Ken Littman, Fred Weglowski, Steve Howance, Steve St. Pierre and Pete Santiago. SOCCER The soccer team finished with a 5-5-5 record. Coached by Tom Karam, this year’s team included Charles Pacheco, Jeff Santos, Alan Oliveira, James Aguiar, William Walmsley, Tom Viana, John Hughes, Dave Curry, Pat Maurettc, Mike Saulino, Joe Kona, Mike Kona, Tom Costa, Mike Almeida, Lucio Serpa, Manuel Mello, John Oliveira, John Materio, Fernando Loulait, Bob Pacheco, Paul Peloquin, Luis Aguiar, Andy Szargawicz and Bruce Norman. 137 Front Row: Head Cheerleader Pat Eagan, Second Row: Peggy Pereira, Judy Varancse, Barbara Bernstein, Kathie Ksen. Back Row: Barbara Bishop, Linda Hennessey, Cyndy Carey, Joyce Arruda. CHEERLEADERS “We are from Durfee High And no one could he prouder . , . ” Pride in B.M.C. Durfee High School and in the red and black uniform that they wear is the hallmark of a Durfee cheerleader. The cheerleaders can be found at every Durfee football and basketball game, adding the color and the spirit that is uniquely Durfee's. Of the eight regular cheerleaders, four are chosen each spring from the sophomore candidates. Every second year a fifth cheerleader is chosen to act as an alternate for two years. The Head Cheerleader is selected by the seniors and the Faculty Advisor from among the juniors. 7’he cheerleaders are Durfee's most loyal fans, and game after game, they feel the emotions of winning or losing almost as much as the players them- selves. When the going is rough, the cheerleaders can always be counted upon to keep the hopes of the crowd from dimming and to keep the team aiming for the top. And the chant of “We’re Number One is usually no idle boast. Whatever the game, the cheerleaders make their presence known, but from December until March it’s “Baskets, baskets, baskets, boys — You make the baskets, We’ll make the noise!” Faculty Advisor is Mrs. Elizabeth T. Sullivan, 138 Front Row; Barbara Costa, Susan Keeley, Louise Linden. Back Row: Kathy Carey, Denise Dube, Head Majorette Nancy Fraze, Debbie Morris and Sheila Kelly. MAJORETTES Whenever the Durfec band performs, people will see it led by eight spirited majorettes in uniforms of traditional red and black. The group works throughout the summer and school year to prepare for football and basketball games, parades, pep rallies, and twirling competitions. They not only display talent, but also help to promote school spirit and interest in athletics. The group is comprised of four seniors and four juniors, each chosen in I he spring of her sophomore year. Eligibility is determined by twirling and marching ability, academic achievement, and cooperation. Judges who choose the girls are Mr. Faust Fiore, band director; advisors Miss Alice Harrington, Vice-Principal and Miss Margot Lavoie, physical education instructor; and the senior majorettes. The head majorette is chosen in the winter of her junior year on the basis of her leadership qualities as well as twirling ability, sense of rhythm, and personality. She is picked by Mr. Fiore, Miss Harrington, and Miss Lavoie, and is presented at the last home basketball game. It is she who supervises the training of the newly elected majorettes and plans future activities. The majorettes are awarded a letter D” with a baton insignia at the All Sports banquet for their continuous effort to encourage participation in school activities as well as to add color to events in which they take part. 139 Front Row: Kaihy C.arcy, Co-Captain Sue Cordeiro, Co-Captain Barbara Horowiec and Cyndy Carey. Back Row: Debbie Silvia. Maureen Andrade, Crare Pereira. Terry Amaral, Nancy Rapoza, Debbie Morris, GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL With all returning starters from last year’s squad the Durfee girls have set out to prove that they too can be Number 1. This year’s team was well balanced both offensively and defensively and the second string was as strong as the first. The team is coached by Miss Margot A. Lavoie and is considered by other schools as “the team to beat.” Sportsmanship plus teamwork are the major factors of a winning team. Durfee girls possess these qualities and many more. As active members of the Bristol County Girls’ League, Durfee played a 12 game schedule with area schools. Players on the Girls' Varsity Basketball team, who meet school require- ments, receive an old English “D” at the Sports Award Assembly and also attend a banquet for all girls who participated in Bristol County League Sports. HO ACKNOWLEDGMENT We, of the 1969 Record Book Staff, wish to extend our gra- titude to the following people who have helped us make this year's book a success. First, we wish to thank our advisors, Miss Katherine L. Hogan and Miss Barbara J. Leonard for their unfailing assistance in the preparation of the Record Book. We express our appreciation also to Mr. William Bradbury who assisted Miss Hogan. Our gratitude should also be expressed to the following for their cooperation with the staff: the faculty advisors and club officers who submitted write-ups and arranged pictures: the Fall River Herald News which loaned us athletic photographs for all sports activities; the Durfee Hilltop staff who helped to identify glossies and to read copy and proofs; our photographers, Richard Schwartz, Michael Mui, and Robert Green; and our advertisers who gave the Record Book a financial boost. 141 142 SUCCESS To The Class of 1969 LORING STUDIOS 392 SPRING STREET Opposite St. Mary's Cathedral Telephone 678-5022 145 146 Tel. 673-3957 TORCHIA PHOTOGRAPHERS Compliments of PORTRAITS FALL RIVER HERALD NEWS WEDDINGS SENIOR PORTRAITS 368 SOUTH MAIN STREET FALL RIVER.
