To Miss Anna L Sullivan, in recognition of her devo- tion to the students of B. M. C. Durfee High School, the Class of 1968 proudly dedicates this Record Book. Miss Sullivan has given her time and effort to mem' bers of the Business Education Course. She has also been a good friend to the student body as well as to the faculty. It is with great honor that we dedicate this book to a woman who has so devotedly served both her school and her students. E D I C A T I O N TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION FACULTY ............... Dewsnap, Senior Clerk-Stenographer Anna C. Harrington, Senior Clerk-Stenographer Olga Hordovitch, Clerk-Stenographer Kathryn Lenehan, Senior Clerk Barbara J. Coriaty, Junior Clerk-Stenographer To the Members of the Graduating Class of 1968 of the B. M. C. Durfee High School: I extend to you my heartiest congratulations on the occasion of your graduation from the B. M. C. Durfee High School. You have completed a course of study that should have answered the question, “Plow shall 1 find the full meaning of life? We are convinced that your years of schooling have provided you with parts of the answer to that question. We would now hope that you know something of beauty, of the many ways in which it is revealed and the art of expressing it. We trust that you are sensitive to the world around you, that you are able to feel the wind and to really see the stars and the moon and the trees and to live within this environment. We hope that we have developed in you a sense of aesthetic taste to have a feeling for and about the things in your lives. We want you to be discriminating in artistic and cultural tastes, as well as intellectual. We hope that now you are able to see yourselves clearly in relation to others. Our purpose has been to train you so that the true Durfee graduate realizes fully that every man, as long as he lives, must make some kind of response to fundamental experiences and must respond to such aspects of his search for the meaning of trust, compassion, authority, discipline, freedom, hope, beauty, truth and love. We have succeeded if, on your graduation day, you know the answer to the question, “How shall I find the full meaning of life?” To the Class of 1968: Education is hardly ever the pause that refreshes. It is a continuous experience from birth through our lifetime. The complications of education and the pressures exerted on faculty, students and parents by college boards, and other testing programs have resulted in experiencing various degrees of impa- tience by everyone. Added to these were the various announcements concerning manner of dress, hair styles and the need to stay awake in the Study Hall. This was not all bad. If we at Durfee were able to convince you that by conforming to certain rules you would be better able to place things in the proper perspective and be able to determine where you are going and how to get there, then all the griping and criticism was worthwhile. We hope that in addition to giving you a good academic background in subject matter wTe have also taught you to keep your balance, exercise restraint and respect the feelings of others. In these troubled times we are depending on you to help solve some of our problems and make this a better world. May I extend my congratulations on your accomplishments and wish you a bright future. STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The Students' Activities Association, the center of all student activities, is the only organization whose membership is open to all students interested in joining. The Student Council, its governing body, attempts to plan extra- curricular activities and to develop school spirit and leadership. The Student Council is led by President Adrienne Jamiel and Vice- President Rosemarie Medeiros, it also includes the presidents, vice-presidents, secretaries, and councillors of all classes and the president of the home room directors. This year a new tradition began. The head cheerleader and head majorette were made members of the Student Council. This proved to be an excellent addition, since it enabled the SAA to work more effectively in pro- moting school spirit. Sophomore members of the Student Council were not elected until after the Christmas vacation; therefore, it was impossible to include them in the picture, but they were an important part of the Student Council. Among the activities sponsored by the SAA were the annual fooLball banquet and the Christmas toy drive for the benefit of an orphan's home. An outstanding success was the Pigskin Hop held at the Dwelly Street Armory. Faculty advisors are Mrs. Joan T. Carfagno, Mr. John Connell, and Mr. Reginald M. Pelagio. The SAA is grateful for the cooperation of Principal Thomas W. Hammond. 91 President Lois j. Matins. Secretary -Susan Poirier, and Vice-President-Treasurei Doris Fordei. BUSINESS CLUB The Business Club whose membership is composed of seniors and juniors receiving 70 per cent or better in all four- and five-period subjects, was organized to acquaint business students with the opportunities available lo them and to show them what is expected of them in the business world. ] here were various guest speakers at the meetings held by the chib. In addition to regular meetings, the club sponsors the AMS Spelling and Arithmetic tests, typists lor the Record Book, office aides, and secretaries to the heads of departments. A successful event held this year was a field trip to the John Hancock Insurance Company in Boston and, earlier in the year, a trip to the Aetna Casual- ty Insurance Company in Fall River. A social affair at which the entire faculty of the Business Education department will be guests will end the schedule for the year. Miss Katherine L. Hogan, head of the business department, is advisor. 95 President Richard Lifrak, Secretary-Treasurer Aimee Schwartz, Vice President Augustine Gonsalves. CHESS CLUB The purpose of the Chess Club is to provide for its members the opportunity to improve their chess-playing ability. Members are enabled to compete against other students who share their interest in the game. The players are grouped according to their records in order to insure the matching of people having approximately the same ability. This year, a program has been undertaken to educate the club members who lack the basic theoretical knowledge which is essential to a good player. A team is formed yearly from the most skillful and conscientious students of the game. This team, consisting of four regular players and two alternates, competes against other teams from Chess Clubs in the area. Mr. Robert A. Richard is the club advisor. 96 Barbara St, Laurent, Adrienne Jamiel, Secretary Margaret Oliviera, President Linda Faria, Stephen Texeira, Ann Berryman and David Freedman. THE CLASSICAL CLUB The Classical Club was founded in 1955 to promote interest in Latin, Greek, classical civilization, and the extensive heritage of culture which we have derived from these sources. Originally limited to students of A or B standing, the membership was opened in I960 to all present or former pupils of Latin. Over the years the dub has heard outstanding talks on ancient science, medicine, theatres, slavery, pirates, cosmetics, sculpture, and mythology. There have also been talks with slides and movies of Italy, Sicily, and Greece with particular attention to Greek and Roman ruins. Comic sketches and games have livened oilier meetings. In 1958, at the suggestion of our former principal, Mr. Ambrose Keeley, who had a special interest in the classics, the club became the annual donor of a Latin medal, for the third-year Latin student who wins a competitive examination. The 1967 recipient was Stephen Wilson. At intervals of approximately three years the club sets up a corridor display. The members also visit the classical collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts every three years. Present officers of the club are Linda Faria, Consul (President); Susan Keeley, Praetor (Vice-President); Margaret Oliveira, Censor (Secretary'); and Stephen Texeira, Curule Aedile (Program Chairman). Lois Avila is a former Praetor and Aedile; David Freedman a quaestor (dues collector and attend- ance taker). Stephen Wilson and Margaret Oliveira are responsible for this Record Book picture and article. Ann Berryman kept us publicized in the Durfee Hilltop. Lois Avila entertained us with a talk on Roman soldiers and David Freedman discussed “Transportation and Communication in Ancient Rome. 97 President Fredda Shapiro, Vice-President Stephen Weiser. Secretary-Treasurer Gail Packer. CONTEMPORARY JAZZ SOCIETY This club is designed to promote interest in and appreciation of modern Jazz. At each monthly meeting selected students presented a program on some aspect of Jazz, such as its development in the United States, a parti- cular Jazzist, or the various kinds of Jazz. The dub also added new albums to its collection. The membership is composed of any suidems having an interest in Jazz. Faculty advisor is Miss Phyllis Pytel. 98 Vice-President Jonathan Kates, President Paul Berger, and Secretary-Treasurer Stephen Yoken. DEBATING SOCIETY The Debating Society is opened to any interested sophomore, junior, or senior. The Society engages in trial debates, prepares briefs for team use, and contributes to the research file. The Debating Team is selected from the Society on the basis of proficiency and interest. The team represents Durfee in the debates of the Narragansett Interscholastic Debating League and en- gages in interscliolastic competition sponsored by various New England colleges. Several tournaments are entered for area championships, Mr. James Roche is faculty advisor. 99 Vice-President Laurie Lash, President Sharon Correia, Secretary Elaine Rabinovitz. DRAMATICS CLUB The Dramatics Club helps pupils to understand and to enjoy good plays. The members are given the opportunity to develop their dramatic talents by working and acting in a major production. An annual cake sale is held by the members to raise money for this organization which provides the funds necessary for costumes and props. Although entertainment is the main objective of this group, its mem- bers learn that acting is hard work and they strive to obtain their highest potentials in this field. In working with each other, they acquire the knowledge of many techniques used in the fine arts. Each person does his best to make the club worthwhile and function properly. The Durfee High Dramatics Club’s reputation is of the highest, and it is our aim to keep it that way. 100 Spons Editor Jeffrey Farias, Carol DeNardo, Ann Berryman, Business Manager Barbara Wood, Editor Deborah Grozen, Joan Fuller, Darleen Aguiar, Assistant Sports Editor Michael Foley. THE DURFEE HILLTOP The Durfee Hilltop, the bi-weekly student newspaper, was published this year by a staff of eight seniors of the Journalism II class. Deborah Grozen was the Editor; Barbara Wood, the Business Manager, was in charge of gathering advertisements. The sports staff included Jeffrey Farias as sports editor and Michael Foley as his assistant. Darleen Aguiar, Ann Berryman, Carol DeNardo, and Joan Fuller composed the staff of reporters who gathered all the school news and many intriguing features and items of interest. The New England Scholastic Press Association awarded the Durfee Hilltop a letter for meritorious achievement for its scholastic editing and publishing. The Durfee Hilltop also received a second place award at the forty-fourth annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference held in March. The policy of the staff and the paper has always been to keep the student body in touch with important school activities, to express editorial opinion in an interesting manner, to present features with a variety of appeal, and to promote the best interests of the school. Miss Barbara J. Leonard is faculty advisor to the staff. The Journalism I class under her direction also contributed copy for the Hilltop. 101 Secretary-Treasurer Mae Joet President Henry Vaillancourt, Vice-President Myna Somers. FRENCH CLUB The main purpose of “Le Cercle Fran jais“ is to give students of the French language a greater insight into the cultural aspects of France. One learns very little of a language if he merely memorizes grammar rules. How- ever, by examining its various customs, he actually gains a much better understanding. It is for this reason that “Le Cercle Francais” has been estab- lished at Durfee. Unlike the National Honor Society or an athletic club, there are few projects in which a foreign language club can participate that will truly benefit the school in some way. Therefore, we try to have many meetings, each being as interesting as possible. At some of our meetings, we have shown French films depicting life in different parts of France. One of our happiest social gatherings was the Christmas party, held on December 21. This gave the members an opportunity to celebrate the holiday season. At the time of this write-up, plans are still being made for our 1968 program. We do hope to have the French Consul come to speak to the club, as well as to go on several outings. Since there are nearly one hundred mein hers in the club, it is difficult with the help of Miss Phyllis C. Pytel, our faculty advisor, we have tried to make our activities as diverse as possible, in an attempt to satisfy the various interests of each student. 102 Historian Barbara St. Laurent. Vice-President fames Caron, Secretary Carolyn Lovit, President Linda Meyer, Parliamentarian Kenneth Ryder, and Treasurer Rosemary Braga. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA CLUB Membership in the Future Teachers of America Club is open to juniors and seniors who are interested in exploring teaching as a career and who maintain good grades. The purpose of the club is to learn about the opportunities, respon- sibilities, and problems of the various fields in the teaching profession. Educators from the school and community are invited to speak at club meetings. In December an Alumni Tea is held to give alumni an op- portunity to share with members their college experiences. Each spring interested juniors and seniors participate in a l eaching Observation Day at the elemen- tary schools. Miss Sandra D. Thomas is the faculty advisor. 103 President Howard Freedman, Secretary‘Treasurer Wallis Lowenthal, Vice-President Terrance Sullivan. GERMAN CLUB The purpose of Lhe German Club is to cultivate in the student an extra interest in the study of this foreign language. Presented at the monthly meetings are films of the people and customs of Germany and guest speakers from the student body of SMTI. The highlight of the year's events is the club's partici- pation in the annual program at Boston University, Tivoli. This is a gathering of students of German front all over Massachusetts. A German meal is provided and afterwards there is a recitation contest and singing and dancing. In addition to these activities, many members of the club spent an evening of Gemuetlichkcit at das Schwarz Wald Hans, a restaurant in Seekonk, where the German atmosphere is truly pleasant. Under the advisorship of Mr. John F. Sullivan, the German Club promises a year of culture and entertainment for those students who join. 101 Yla President Laurie Lash. President Robcvl Rapoza. HOME ROOM DIRECTORS The Home Room Directors is the second largest club at Durfee. A girl and a boy from every home room are elected lo serve in their capacity of Home Room Director from their respective home room. The duties of the Home Room Director this year included helping a home room teacher with attendance and also selling membership cards for the S. A. A. drive. Mr. James Panos is the faculty advisor. 105 President Marcia Knight, Vice-President Maureen Kelly, Secretary Katherine Ksen, Treasurer Dana Lynch. LIBRARY AIDES The Durfee Library Aides comprise one of the most efficient organiza- tions in this high school. To he a member of the association, a student must be on the Principal's List, as well as be a person of dependable character. Tasks performed by the library aides include preparing books, issuing and delivering library passes, filing cards, and setting up corridor displays. Meetings are held monthly under the guidance of Mrs. Nagle, the librarian. Following the business meeting, various speakers and entertainers have addressed the members on interesting subjects. The annual Christmas party and trip highlight the events of the year. Mrs. M. Rita Nagle is the club advisor. 106 Secretary-Treasurer Deborah Grozen, President Gerald Martins. Vice-President Judith Eddleston. MATHEMATICS CLUB The Mathematics Club is made up of those students interested in continuing the study of higher math after high school. They are mostly math majors whose chosen career will call for a complete knowledge of the subject. A series of speakers provided the program for many of the meetings. They were mostly faculty members from such area colleges as SMTI, Bridge- water, and Brown. Members of the senior class occasionally spoke about courses they had taken outside of Durfee or advanced study they had done. The major off campus get-together of the club was the annual Christmas bowling party. The members met between buildings, and the traditional caravan of cars made its way to the Holiday Lanes in SomerseL After a session of record-breaking bowling, the entire group traveled back to the city and packed into the president's house for the second half of the party. In the spring the dub ventured out once again. This time our objective was the New England Electric power plant, which we toured thoroughly. Finally, under the direction of Mr. Donald G. Wood, our faculty advisor, the Mathematics Club held its big picnic outing, the final meeting of the year. 107 President Rosemary Braga, Vice-President Sheila Zangwill, Secretary-Treasurer Beverly Rapoza, MUSIC APPRECIATION CLUB “Who has the red finger paint? ' What do you mean — play the melody upside down? At least the cookies were good.” Sounds of Music Appreciation Club meetings are usually misleading. Programs range from the customary movie or guest folk or classical performer to such exotic activities as finger-painting to music, delving into the avant-garde world of 12-Lone scales and sawing through cellos, to the satisfaction of munching while mulling over new ideas. Members have listened to recordings of music from foreign countries, visited the Gardner Museum in Boston on Chamber Music Day, heard the Boston Pops, and visited the ancient instrument room of Fine Arts Museum. In the realm of modern music, we have looked into the folk song resurgence, and enjoyed the experimental. The only limitation is the imagination of the members. The group that met on the first Tuesday of every month had as its purpose the provision of a background for greater understanding and enjoy- ment of all types of music. 108 President Dennis Vieira, Vice-President Deborah Macy, Secretary Gail Packer, Editor of Phoenix Nest Roberta Castro, and Assistant Editors of Phoenix Nest Linda Ferreira and Gerald Martins, THE NATONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is probably the most selective club of Durfee. Its membership consists solely of students who have shown high academic and leadership qualities. Each year, approximately fifty juniors and one hundred seniors are elected into the society. This year, as in the past, the National Honor Society has carried out its programs for academic advancement. Perhaps the most outstanding project of the club has been its preparation of the Phoenix Nest, Durfee's literary magazine. It consists of essays, short stories, and poems created by the students of Durfee, The magazine offers an opportunity for students to develop and show their creative and literary abilities. The Phoenix Nest won a superior rating from the New England Scholastic Press Association aL the annual conference in November. Another project of the society has been die organization of a tutorial program. This is a system in which the club members give academic aid to students who need help in a certain subject. Each year, the National Honor Society sponsors several social gatherings. The October Tea was an opportunity for the club members to become better acquainted with each other, and in general, simply to have a good time. They also did the traditional Christmas concert for the Rotary Club, and caroled throughout the school before the Christmas recess. In January, twelve of the chorus members sang in the Southern Mass- achusetts District Concert, and shortly after, the entire chorus participated in the Opera Sing, Carmen,” by George Bizet. PORTUGUESE CLUB The purpose of the Portuguese Club is to promote the educational, civic, and recreational development of its members. It was also established for the purpose of acquainting its members with Portuguese customs, and to make them aware of the glorious heritage of the Portuguese culture. The club familiarizes the members with the extensiveness and importance of the resources controlled by the Portuguese-speaking people throughout the world and particularly in Brazil and Africa, This year's activities included an exhibit in the library corridor which displayed many cultural items and artifacts, not only from Portugal, but also from its territories. Also included were some reproduced antiques and a col- lection of books on Portuguese art treasures, history and literature, donated by the Gulbcnkian Foundation. Guest speakers at meetings lectured on various subjects pertinent to Portuguese culture, while others spoke of the numerous opportunities available for the advance study of Portuguese, and of the many advantages for obtaining important positions for persons familiar with the Portuguese language. Other guests showed slides of enchanting Portugal and of its other territories. One of the highlights of the year was the invitation from the Portuguese Department of S.M.T.I. to attend a meeting at its campus, where other Portu- guese Clubs of area high schools were also present. Miss Mary T. Carvalho is the club’s faculty advisor. 112 Secretary-Treasurer Henry Vaillancourt, President Marie Regq, Vice-President Deborah Macy. THE RUSSIAN CLUB The Russian Club of B.M.C- Durfee High School was formed in January, 1967, in order to encourage study of Russian heritage and culture. In acquaint- ing themselves with Russian literary and social trends, the club members increase their knowledge of a country that is important in world affairs. Although the club is not yet organized to an extent that it can sponsor field trips, members have seen films, have participated in discussions and have heard reports from various speakers. Since the number of those electing Russian as a course is small, anyone who fulfills the basic requirements of interest and good scholarship is allowed admission. Mr. John Sullivan is faculty advisor. 113 President. Eduard Los, Secretary-Treasurer Glace Vaitiiu, Vice-President Augustine Gonsalves. ASTRONOMY SOCIETY The Astronomy Society was organized this year to promote interest in this physical science. Besides giving advanced amateurs the use of Durfee’s famous observatory, the club introduced beginners to the wonders of the sky. A sincere interest in astronomy was the only membership requirement. For three hours on every fair Monday and Wednesday, club members scanned the heavens from the Summer Triangle to Hercules for nebulae, planets, and other interesting celestial bodies. The society also repeated some famous experiments such as the measurement of the distance of the moon, the study of planetary motion, and the determination of the speed of light. Our meetings every three weeks supplemented the observatory pro- gram. The agendas included guest speakers, films, and astronomy discussions. The club also visited Roger Williams Planetarium. The faculty advisor is Mr. Armand A. Dallaire. President Richard Goldberg, Vice-Pres idem Jeffrey Korber, Recording Secretary- Treasurer Lois Avila, Corresponding Secretary Annabel Gee, SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club had a wide spectrum of activities this year, Foremost among these were guest speakers. Dr. Franklin J. Scott of the Thompson-Apex Company of Assonet spoke to the club abom the ever growing plastics industry. Mr. Evan R. Kantrowitz, past president of our club, and a national winner in the Ford Future Scientists of America Awards Program, spoke about the role of the high school student in the world of science. Other activities enjoyed by the members included watching movies of scientific interest, attending social functions such as the coffee hour and the parties, and most of all, going on the club trip. For the first time in the history of the club, a committee was established to write a constitution which will serve to guide future club leaders. Under the chairmanship of Joseph Arruda, an excellent constitution was assembled in just three months. The Science Club owes much to its dynamic faculty advisor, Mr, Roger H. Dubois who untiringly helped to make our year a great success. Thanks are also in order for Lhe chairlady of our Outside Activities Committee, Joan Higson, for the chairman of the Chemistry Affiliates, Joseph Sarna, and for Mr. Leonard Alves who devoted his energies into reactivating and directing the Chemistry Affiliates. 115 President Clara Oliveira, Vice-President Linda Horvitz, Secretary Beth-Ann Freed. Treasurer Linda Meyer. THE SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club each year tries lo give its members a deeper appre- ciation of the Spanish culture. Its members proved themselves true Spaniards at heart by their celebration at the club’s Christmas party. Christmas carols were sung in Spanish and the finale was observed with the breaking of a truly Mexican pinata laden with trinkets and candies. The Spanish Club traveled to New York in April to see Man of La Mancha, a play about the famous, gallant and comical Spanish character, Don Quixote. The members of the Spanish Club are truly active in all facets of our organization, not only in education but also in the social and cultural activities. The faculty advisor is Miss Cassandra Babiarz. 116 Executive Director Ernest Silva, Jr., President Alan A, Silva, Vice-President Louis Silva, Secretary Christine Mikolazyk, Treasurer Joan Higson, WORLD HISTORY CLUB The World History Club was established to increase the student's inte- rest in all areas and phases of history; to augment his knowledge of various peoples, places, and customs; to create within the “young historian” the sense of responsibilities and rights which are attached to world citizenship; and to develop a certain co-ordination and co-operation so necessary in everyday life. This year, the club has undertaken the traditional UNICEF Drive for the underpriviledged children throughout the world, the annual U.N. Trip, and a Christmas Party for the general membership. The club also sent the Durfee Hilltop to our servicemen in Vietnam. Also slated for this year is a travelogue given by Miss Dolores Burns, as well as the presentation of Exchange Club speakers from S.M.T.I. Under the faculty advisor, Mr. George Kelly and his assistant Mr. Thomas EE Cahill, the World History Club has tried to present to its members a progressive, interesting, and enjoyable program of monthly activities. 117 President Jean Botelho, Vice-President Jacqueline Alix, Secretary Annabel Gee. GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Girls’ Athletic Association, under the direction of Miss Margot Lavoie and Mrs. Beverly Andrade, consists of a group of girls who have a common interest in sports and athletics. These girls participate in, help organize, and manage all intramural programs. The most important of these is the Sophomore Basketball Tournament in which the students coach, time, score and officiate. The G.A.A. also sponsors an alumnae reunion. During Christmas vacation, former members and varsity team players are invited to return to Durfee to play the current varsity basketball team. Termination oi the yearly program occurs at the annual Spring Outing. At a suitable location, members enjoy swimming, recreational games and a cook-out and c onclude with a fellowship program. 118 First Row: Jim Silva, Alan Miller, Tom Pontes, Dennis Hennessey, Greg Massoud, Dan Pimental, Brad Bouchard, Lou Silva. FOOTBALL Led by Tri-captains Lou Silva, Alan Miller, and Joe Roque, the Durfee High FTilhoppers completed a 7-1-1 (won-Iost-tied record) and a second place finish in the Bristol County League. This enviable record was achieved only through the hard work of Coach Donald Montle, his staff, and the entire team. In the only night game of the season the Hilltoppers made an auspicious league debut against New Bedford Vocational winning by a score of 49-8. Durfee continued their winning trend by defeating Attleboro 14-6 and Bishop Stang 6-0. The Hilltoppers received their only loss at the hands of Taunton by the score of 20-14. Durfee then returned to it’s winning streak, defeating Bishop Feehan 12-8, North Attleboro 30-8, Lawrence Central, a Greater Boston League oppo- nent, 34-6, and Coyle 19-8. The stage was now sol for the annual Thanksgiving Day game against New Bedford. Before a rain-soaked crowd of 10.000. the Hilltoppers battled New Bedford to 0-0 stand-off. The annual Student Activities Association Banquet was the final event of the season. Joe Roque was named Most Valuable Player and Dan Pimental received the Unsung Hero Award. All-League honor went to Alan Miller, Lou Silva, Dan Pimental, Greg Massoud. and Joe Roque. Greg Massoud also received the Lt. Trevisano Trophy as the team’s outstanding lineman. BASKETBALL This year's basketball team, led by lone returning starter Dennis Carey, compiled a 10-4 record in capturing the co-championship o£ the Bristol County League and an enviable 13-6 record over-all. Under the guidance or Coach Tom Karam, the Hilltoppers displayed a well-balanced offense, coupled, with the league’s most proficient defense. The season opened as the inexperienced Hilltoppers dropped a close 46-45 contest to Rogers High. However, the team then jelled, winning eleven out of their next twelve games, clinching the B. C. L. co-championship and assuring the school its twenty-third Technical Tournament berth in 24 years. Outstanding for the Hilltoppers were play-maker-guard Dennis Carey, prolific scorers Dave Morely and Bill Edward and rebounding center Lou Silva. Other contributions were made by Kevin Manning, a hustling forward, two fine shooting guards, Frank Bigos and Tom Costa, and a fine group of reserves. In their Tech Tourney debut the Hilltoppers were defeated by a tough Cambridge Latin squad 57-42. Carey and Morley were named to All-Bristol County League’s second Learn. Silva and Edward also received honorable mention laurels. Coach Karara was honored for his outstanding job with the team. 123 L70 i m Front; Head Patricia Rego. Third Row: Kathie Ksen, Patricia Eagan, Barbara Bernstein, Margaret Pereira, CHEERLEADERS Being a cheerleader for Durfee is a great honor and privilege. In their bright red and black uniforms, the cheerleaders reuse the spirit of the fans and add much color to all the games. They experience, with the team, the joy of winning and sometimes, the sorrow after a game is lost. The squad is made up of eight girls — four seniors, and four juniors. A girl is chosen in her sophomore year and is on the squad for two years. Head cheerleader is chosen by the four senior cheerleaders and their advisor, Miss Claire-Marie Hart, at the last home game of the season. This year we have continued the practice of substitute cheerleader. Judith Varanese was chosen to take the place of any cheerleader who could not attend a game. This year, the Durfee cheerleaders were seen in a number of parades, marching and singing to their favorite song — Let’s go down the field boys, fight to the end. Play hard and dean boys, We are out to win; Let's go down the Field boys, Kick the goal! Three cheers for Durfee We’ll get that goal! ! 126 Front: Head Judith Stafford, Second Row: joy Kenyon, Andrea Silver, Celeste Nad fen. Third Row: Barbara Costa, Nancy Froze, Susan Keeley, Louise Linden. MAJORETTES Wherever the Durfee hand is seen, you will see it led by the lively majorettes in symbolic red and black uniforms. The eight majorettes work together throughout the summer and school year to practice traditional and original twirling routines for pep rallies, football and baskeLball games, and parades. They not only provide entertainment but they also display talent, school spirit, and the results of hard work. The group is composed of four seniors and four juniors, each chosen at the end of her sophomore year. Qualifications include twirling and marching ability, academic eligibility, and proper conduct. Tryouts are held in the presence of Mr. Fiore, band director; advisors, Vice-Principal Alice Harrington, and physical education instructor, Miss Margot Lavoie, as well as the senior majorettes. It is the responsibility of the senior majorettes to train the newly chosen girls in all aspects of twirling. The head majorette is chosen by the band director and advisors on the basis of her twirling ability, sense of rhythm, personality and particularly her capacity for leadership. The majorettes usher in the football season with t heir traditional march at Alumni Field to the tune of “Our Director's March.” At the annual football banquet, each majorette receives an old English “D“ with a baton insignia for her tireless efforts throughout the year. 127 Front Row — Deborah Silvia, Barbara Ilormveic, Co-Captain; Shirley Ibbotscm,. Co- Captain; Carolyn Magriby. Back Row — Sue Dunlop, Grace Pereira, Terry Amaral, Sue Cordeiro, Joanne Packer and Nancy Rapoza. GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL Basketball games are as unpredictable as life itself, but players acquire sportsmanship and friendships which will last long after the final scores are forgotten. For 1967-1968 as a participating member of the Bristol County Girls’ League, Durfee opened the season with a twelve-game schedule. Coached by Miss Margot A. Lavoie and faced by the return of only one veteran, the team spent the season rebuilding with great expectations for future years. Victory was not always ours because only one team can win any game. To us, the concomitant values of participation in sports can be gained by winner ami loser alike so we therefore considered our season a most successful one. Players on the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team, who meet school require- ments, receive an old English “D” at the Sports Award Assembly and also attend a banquet for all girls who participated in Bristol County League Sports. 128 Jory Schwartz, Barbara Bishop, Kmilinda Williams. The Hilltoppers made an auspicious debut, defeating Westport 32 with center-forward Charlie Sousa scoring twice and teammate Lou Serpa once. The team then tied New Bedford Voke 1-1 and lost to Attleboro 1-0. Charlie Sousa then set a league record of six goals in a single game as Durfee beat Diman 7 3. The team, after losing its next two games, got back on the winning track against New Bedford Voke, Attleboro and Diman, playing to a 0-0 standoff against New Bedford in the season's finale. Also to be commended for their fine play were Bruce Norman, Dennis Carey, lorn Costa, Bill Walmsley, Lou Serpa, Bob Cabral, Roger Ramos, Charles Pacheco, Chris Semin and Alan Semin. 130 BASEBALL Looking ahead to a line season are Coach Joe Lewis and his team. Their reasons lie in returnees Dave Curry, Gerry Dore, Kevin Manning, Chuck Duemmel, Dan Pimental, Joe Roque and George Phelan. This should be a very successful season for the Hilltoppers who are playing a very challenging schedule. TENNIS Coach Frank Jordan is looking ahead to another line season for the Hilltoppers. The team’s schedule includes matches with Coyle, Fairhaven, Falmouth, Old Rochester, Dartmouth. New Bedford, and Taunton. Returnees include Captain Dave Freedman, Steve Gregory, and Barry McMahon. After a dis- couraging opening meet against Brockton, the squad proceeded to win four out of their next six contests. The captain, Terry Sullivan, was the team's second highest scorer followed by Bob Thomas, Rick Mercer, Len Machado, Steve Cybert, and Ken Soucy. The season ended with full team participation in the Bristol County League Championships where the Toppers attained fourth place in the standings.
